Seeing the difference between 2014 and 2019 videos is great! Production and editing is a different level now but the instructions and commentary is still second to none.
I love your idea of marking your brake rotor and a point on your vehicle frame to get a toe measurement, in addition to counting turns. When I replaced the tie rods on our 05 Ram 1500, the right tie rod was completely seized with rust, so much so I had to use a torch to get it off, thus counting turns didn’t really work here... but when we went to Les Schwab for a professional alignment, it was done in 20 min and the tech said the alignment was only slightly off! Thanks so much Eric!
Looking to overhaul my whole front suspension ball joints. No Haynes manual. Just a lot of these great instructive videos. And some advice on the job from experienced/schooled autopart store guys. Thanks for this!
Great vid and many thanks for posting your clear, detailed instructions. I took my Ram for an alignment, but the shop said they didn't want to do it because my outers were shot and the alignment would be pointless. Makes sense -also feels good to know the shop didn't just take my $ and send me on my way.Watched your vid and ordered some greasable tie rod ends. Seems pretty straightforward and DIY-able. $23 for a set of ends and a tube of anti-seize; can't beat that. Thanks again!
I use a compass, you know the ones used for drawing circles.spread it out to the jam nut, stick the pointy end in the grease fitting and lock it.use it to measure the new one.Somewhat accurate....
Simple Fast Easy Peasy as pie. Coulda sworn that off camera you sprayed Brake Cleaner somewhere.... ;)Thanks Eric - Another top notch and really kool video
If you happen to miss the hole for the cotter pin after tightening, continue until it lines up again. Don't ever back it off to line it up. It could wallow out the hole in the spindle causing noise, looseness, or play in the steering. In some cases the tie rod could break and then really bad thing happens...
very good and clear video. Now I need a video on how to replace the rack and pinion on my 2004 dodge truck. sears says that needs to be replaced with my tire rod
hey! awesome videos. Really like your dodge ram exaust manifold replacement video. If you ever replace the inner seal on a 2010 dodge ram 2500 axle please upload a video. cheers
Changed the outer tie rods, control arms, and sway bar links on a Dodge Neon a couple weeks ago. Wish it was that easy. Stupid OE design outer tie rod ends are made with a thick sheet of metal folded into a cylinder and have a large gap in the metal on the bottom which allows salt and water to get in and corrode the threads. Pain to remove. Even more of a pain to install a cast tie rod end over the old threads. Should have recommended replacing the inners too.
Also, jam nuts were so tight on both sides that I had to push as hard as I could with my right leg on the end of my 22mm wrench to get them loose. No way I would have been able to get those loose using my arms.
Am currently fighting like to to get a jam nut loose.... day 2 of pb blaster. Tried torching. Tried a long bar. And a longer bar. Whacked it with a hammer, and my knuckles to... am about this...close to taking a grinder to it and calling it good enough. (: yay
FYI for the DIY'ers out there- when changing all your own chassis and steering parts, tighten all your own nuts and bolts! Don't assume the guy at the alignment shop is going to check all of your work. We've had guys rebuild the entire front end of their cars (ball joints, tie rods, pitman and idler arms) and just run the castle nuts on finger tight and shove in a cotter pin! They said they assumed we needed it all loose to adjust the alignment. LOL
So I got the nut loose, and rod out, but I can't unscrew it, it's twisting the whole tie rod in past the boot where i cant see because it's rusted, I've tried heat and lots of pb blaster, but I can find a good spot to grab the tie rod to stop it from twisting. Any tips? (Edit) after 4 heat soak, and pb cycles it's finally loose!
A guy at the shop told me I needed a wheel hub, well after doing that it turns out it was just the tie rod end, great video, I like when you say "you don't have to kill the nut" I have never killed a nut. I call it "Angry monkey tight" maybe not so PC
+South Main Auto Repair I would lol. I changed my litter tie rod then my inner went bad. made me wish I done all at once. save time. another alignment fee and the job done over. could've saved ll that if I had some it all at once
Oh I see. That is a hard sell to a customer, especially when you have to tell them they are not bad but you recommend changing them. Not a lot of people get that ya know.
Hey glad to subcribe. On another dogde related issue. I got a 2010. Dodge ram 1500. With the back wheels off the ground, shouldnt i be able to tirn them without alot of effort.? Just serviced brakes and e brakes cause i thought that was what was holding the wheels from turning like any other. Any thoughts?? Thanks for your time. Great videos.
Are you asking about the jam nut? It's all still righty tighty. Lefty loosey. The jam nut is screwed onto the inner tie rod first (right-tighty) and then the new outer tie rod end is screwed on (again...righty-tighty). The jam nut is then backed down (lefty-loosey) against the tie rod end and jams against the back-side of the outer tie rod. To break the jam nut loose in the beginning, the jam nut is run further up the inner tie-rod by righty-tighty (only by a thread or two but just enough that it's no longer "jammed" up against the back side of the tie rod end).
not easy job if u live in rust belt...pain in the ass..cant get jam nut off old one.....may not be able to change .....all jobs easier on non rust belt vehicles like his.

Its fun to watch channels earliest videos. Come a long way.

Just learned from this (all other vids just count thread spins) toe in = thread in. Toe out = thread out. Right?

Thank you this was beautiful and worked perfect
very good and clear video. Now I need a video on how to replace the rack and pinion on my 2004 dodge truck. sears says that needs to be replaced with my tire rod
Actually the racks in those are really easy to change. If you can change a Tie Rod you can do a rack for sure :)
This your first video? Cool how things change.
hey! awesome videos. Really like your dodge ram exaust manifold replacement video. If you ever replace the inner seal on a 2010 dodge ram 2500 axle please upload a video. cheers
New drinking game, take a shot every time he says the word UA-cam
good quality on all your videos...
Can you do this on the ground, or with jack stands?
Do you have a video on inner tie rod replacement? I see a lot of videos of DIY people doing it, but I want to see a real professional do it.
John Holmes was a pro too, just sayin.
Great video, how can I drive my truck before I take it in for an alignment
What size wrench did you use at minute 1:00
When your counting make sure the tie rods are the same length. Some are different size lengths. great video though
Thanks for your help great video.
brilliantly done video my friend!
another good demo thanks.Surprised you didn't do those nasty front discs.
Good quick fix, but more important, HOW to check for a worn/damaged tie rod end!
Thanks for a great video.
the arm is up side down.the Castle nut is on top.dodge Cummins diesel 1996. 2500.8 foot bed .heavy spring.

Welcome to Dodgeworld where rust welding is a bonafide skill.

Same goes for co workers !!!!

+Richard Cowtails So one bad tie rod it is recommended to change all of them?
+South Main Auto Repair I would lol. I changed my litter tie rod then my inner went bad. made me wish I done all at once. save time. another alignment fee and the job done over. could've saved ll that if I had some it all at once

How do you take it off if the outer end is broken where the screw goes? 2004 1500
Thanks for the video.
Why did you put the vise grips on? I am about to change the outer tie rod ends on my 2003 Ram 1500.
HI Eric, I have a 2006 ford ranger with bad outer tie rod ends. Would it be a good idea to change both inner tie rods at the same time. THANKS FRIEND
It was super simple sir. That will be $995.99.....
😂😂😂
I've always just counted threads and then get it to scwhab. 50 bucks alignment
does anyone have a video on how to do the inners as well
What size wrench are you using??

Michael Nicholson 9 1/4" locking diff? Jack it up and put t-case in neutral see what happens then :)
Thanks, will try that..
How does he get anything done when remember when comes on the radio
I like ram videos
ok what if that first but he loosened will not break free then what?
How come when he loosened the tie rod bolt he loosened it by righty tighty not left loosey
because its left hand thread

No need to torque castle nut to spec?

not easy job if u live in rust belt...pain in the ass..cant get jam nut off old one.....may not be able to change .....all jobs easier on non rust belt vehicles like his.
