My father used to say Cobb was so hated by fellow ballplayers that at his funeral only two men showed up. The truth is when I die if my wife is still alive there will only be one person there; if she has passed before me someone I designated and hired to make sure I was cremated and buried will be the only person, a stranger, at my funeral. So it goes to show.
Very nice interview. The photos need to be larger at 03:45 and 5:20. I recognize one as Cobb w/ Willie Mays in SF, and his colorized shot w/Babe and Tris Speaker, but wouldn't if I didn't know already. Film clip w/ Cobb himself begins at 14:00. (sidebar: at 10:17, Ty is driving his Chalmers? Baker? Hupmobile? Something else? I'd like to learn more about his Hupmobile dealership...)
Pete Rose is up there too! I completely agree, arguably the greatest one to lace a pair of cleats. It is a shame that his name has been slandered. We really don't know what he was like, which may be the true tragedy of the situation. History is blurred, but I tend to think he leans more toward the human side of things than the myth.
@@scaboi Ty got more votes than Ruth when they were elected into the first Hall of Fame class. The people that actually saw both of them play clearly thought Cobb was the best.
@@dannydisalvo5869 Could Ty Cobb pitch and hit for power like Babe Ruth did? Those who said that Cobb was better, only because they hated Ruth's power game and preferred Cobbs small ball game.
The first man elected into the baseball hall of fame with the votes for one player. And respected by his peers. That there tells you a lot that Stumps telling of Cobbs story was Stump going into business for himself.
It's a shame really. Take out the fact that it's a cruel thing to do, it also muddied the waters of baseball history. Even Ken Burns has come out and said he was inaccurate in his depiction of Cobb in his Baseball documentary. Stump missed an opportunity to document Cobb in the right way, and be remembered for it today.
I used to believe a lot of the stuff from the 1994 Cobb movie, based on Al Stump's book. However, I always so impressed with Cobb's record and some of the crazy stories of Cobb, that I had to do my own research. The research showed a lot of stories were either lies or exaggerations or taken out of context. Now, I believe Al Stump's legacy as a sportswriter is going to be ruined. BTW, I'm black, its nice to know that Cobb supported the integration of baseball and did have respect for some of the Negro League players.
@@BravesOnDeck I’m so glad you mentioned this. I am new to the non-myth accuracy about Ty Cobb and who he really was, and have been looking into it more. I was recently watching the Ken Burns documentary, and I was stunned by how malevolent they described Cobb - using words like “evil” and phrases like the “darkest” blight of baseball history. Burns is such a well-respected documentarian, I was stunned that he didn’t dig deeper on Cobb, and I was going to look into whether he had reconciled this, since he filmed it almost 20 years ago. Long story short, I’m happy to know that he addressed this, thank you! And thank you for the video!!
@@3rdandzen97 thank you for watching. I believe even Ken Burns has backtracked a bit when it comes to Cobb. I choose to believe he was misunderstood, but overall a decent person…but a heck of a player.
when you think of his incredible feats on the baseball field consider that there was no expansion and only the best of the best played in his era ! there are many players today who would not have even made a team back then .

Try Heart of a Tiger by Herschel Cobb. Just think what his batting average would be with the tighter baseball we have today
