- After being reminded of this song by my good friend, I was once again captivated by it and decided to translate it. It seems sakanaction licensed more songs to UA-cam by now, so hopefully I'll also be able to upload the ones I've translated long ago but couldn't publish because of their copyright policies.
I translated "Sayonara wa emotion" as "Goodbyes are emotions" within the song, but more about that in the annotations.
Translation by me.
Annotations:
First the title translation. "Sayonara wa emotion" sounds a bit unnatural as a sentence, so as I read up on it I learned that Yamaguchi Ichirō had "Sayonara Emotion" as the working title for this song, which would quite easily translate to "Goodbye emotions", but then made the conscious decision to add the "wa" particle between them to separate the two words from each other. This was supposed to give more creative freedom to the listeners who interpret the lyrics of this song. Given that, I find it hard to translate the title in a way I'm content with; "Goodbyes are emotions" is the best I could come up with.
"I walk - Continuously to the other side of the deep fog" - In English it's probably more natural to say "thick" or "dense" fog, but I felt the adjective "deep" had a poetic sound to it and wanted to keep it, since the meaning still gets across.
The piece of paper at 3:11 reads as follows:
"Just like that I came by a convenience store in the neighborhood
And unreliable as I am, I bought myself a canned coke
Then drank it alone"

Thank you for watching!
My interpretation of this is that it tells the story of being caught in depression, and how everything seems the same or loops back into monotony, sort of like an endless night. I think that by writing the song Yamaguchi is giving in to these feelings and perpetuating the loop. The ending, when he pours the ink on the beginning verse of the song I think is symbolic for him destroying that repetition, and thus ending the loop of "night" and bringing it into "morning", finally putting him in a place where he can begin to heal and move past the depression.
I like this!

What is written on that paper that he dumps the contents of the inkwell onto? I've always wondered
Late I know, but it appears to be the opening verse of the song.
