For me Cakewalk is just much simpler and more convenient than Studio One. I have made several attempts to switch from Cakewalk to Studio One.
And in the end, I stay at Cakewalk, continuing to discover new delights of working in this DAW 😁
And the reason is just the convenience of writing and processing music.
The current CakeWalk from Bandlab is Sonar Platinum five years ago in terms of functionality.
And it's not raw and not rigid )))
For myself, I made one conclusion: you need to become a pro in one program.
Learn all the subtleties in practice.
And jumping from one DAW to another is a lack of focus on creativity.

Bandlab is saying they have greatly improved Sonar Plat.
I'd be interested to know how they fund the changes, updates etc. Perhaps it's a little like Open Source? Blender is an amazing program.
I just started again after using Logic 5 decades ago and my son was using Logic 8/9/10 and moved to Studio One but I have no money to buy and Studio One prime is so crippled it's useless.

Here is the problem for any comparison of DAWs; it takes a year and a day to learn in any kind of depth the properties, possibilities and available controls and nuances of any DAW, in my case Cakewalk. For anyone now to say to me that I should convert to another DAW, and spend another year and a day learning this new DAW, I have to tell you that is not going to happen, especially when the differences between the two DAWs are very small and not at all consequential.

Cakewalk is what we use for years. Recently through the purchase of new gear Studio One showed up on the studio DAW. I have not used SOne very much but our software engineer uses it regularly. He says Studio One has some workflow and features/short cuts that he loves. He says it's a better DAW for mixing??? But we force him to mix in Cakewalk because that's what we understand and can aide in the mix and any necessary edits. Jury is still out on the comparison in our studio.

Some rerasons to stay by CW:
    - small dots before the clips- so one can see all the time, if the track is emty or ith has some recored stuff. The dots can notify you, if you leave even a single note somewhere in the track. In S1? Nothing. I never see witch track is empty ore empty after an event (clip).
    - fast navigating to the beginning - end of file (ctrl+pgup or pgdn). In S1 is unable to jump to the end of the project. It's very useful too.
    - In CW you can record over an old recording, and you will find two clips (rectangles) as result. They are ovelrlapping. You can edit or delete them separately. In S1? The new recording deletes the old, or the old and new will be merged. Why??
    - In CW the recorded blocks end, as you stop. In S1 the event sizes will be quantized, rounded up to whole, 1/2, 1/4 etc. bars. In CW you can make 1 sec clips for example.
    - In CW is simple to select a track with all of the content with 1 click
    - No slide function in S1!!! Why?? I can simply make place for some new phrases by sliding all of selcted stuff. Not only with drag a drop with mouse (as in S1), but with the exact parametered slide menu (bars, ticks, seconds...)
    - CW: SPACE stops playing and rewind to the starting position. CTRL+SPACE stops and not rewind. You can simply choose. In S1? Either, or... Very sad...
    - CW is more CPU friendly, much more
    - Event list view in CW. Very important! You can see the recorded data, and edit or delete them as you wish. I used it to find some accidentaly recorded pitch bend value and much more. You can filter to notes, controller data, sysx, patch change command, aftertouch and many more. Very useful!
I've only been using the the Studio One for a few weeks, but the listed functions are so important, that I go back to Cakewalk. I have a Faderport 16, this led me to try Studio One, but the lack of the listed options drives me back to CW.
S1 has many very good tricks and options, but... Sorry.
I am waiting for the new Cakewalk Sonar, I hope, it will be cheap, but not free. Quality can only be expected for money.

I love cakewalk.. when they release the new Sonar, it's going to amaze. One thing you can do with Cakewalk, that you can't do with any other DAW is creating tempo maps from an imported audio, set the project to follow that tempo map.. Sure, most can do this.. but only Cakewalk can do it in 3-4 steps for your entire audio track (or a selection of it).. first, trim the beginning and end, to eliminate the pre-post audio, isolate just the audio track. Select it, and grab and drop it on the Project ruler.. Done.. wait for the render, and look at the tempo map, it's all there.. no more grabing audio data and moving it, every measure or more. Why this is good.. Say you want to add new tracks to a live audio recording with variable tempo, or one that you don't know the tempo, and you want to overdub some new tracks. You import it, and do the 3 steps above.. and DONE, you're ready to overdub and nothing else to do.. It's all lined up.. No other DAW can do this in 3 steps. Cakewalk was one of the very first to implement ARA, this is why.

Mixing, yes, but for me things like the small productivity items like drag and drop, the intuitiveness of most of the functions, things like the ability to create and use macros are very driving forces for my preference.. having the fully integrated hardware like the faderport 8 and the console 1 (yes, I know this one integrates with some other DAWs like cakewalk) are definitely plusses for making the whole recording experience more fun and rewarding.

No doubt. I used Cakewalk products for at least 15 years and participate in the community to this day, though much more in the past. I still keep up with what Cakewalk is doing because they really do have a great product and had I not seen the stuff in Studio One, I'd likely still be using Cakewalk exclusively. There's no doubt that technology is NOT the predominant limiting factor. Now for that "talent plugin" I've been looking for...

I have a friend who advocated Sonar some time ago. I had been using Zoom hardware recorders and liked them. I never got fluent with Cakewalk but I was happy when the free version was released. I reconnected with my friend who was using Cakewalk but had mostly switched to Studio One. I was an audiophile and an electronics technician as well as musician but life got busy. I understand in principle what I want to do in Cakewalk but the interface is so rich it's overwhelming. Studio One has some good thinking and I like what I see, plus collaboration looks easier with their subscription. This video is extremely helpful. Things like the splitter can be largely done with sends, which emulates hardware. Presents seems less constrained by such thinking and more into flow. Version 6 has some sweet improvements. Cakewalk is being well maintained but it's not getting the kind of improvement as Studio One. Thanks!

This is a good comparison. I have used cakewalk for decades. Just recently started to experiment with studio one. When you were talking about busses the one thing that Cakewalk has that is kind of like the busses in Studio One is patch points and aux tracks. if you want a buss next to your tracks then that is the way to go. In my opinion both DAW programs are really good. Would be hard to choose a favorite. DAW programs are like shoes. You got to choose the ones that are most comfortable and most features comes down to personal preference.

Very good presentation. I am a Cakewalk user ( have been for many years). I think there's no question that Cakewalk is the best free DAW available. I can see the advantages of the Presonus DAW. But at this point it doesn't seem worth switching. I don't use a DAW professionally, so the speed benefits are not important to me. The improvement in latency is appealing, but by freezing tracks or saving my mix to a separate two track project and doing my overdubs there I can get around the problem. Again, I can afford to work slower.

    • @BladesMusic
      @BladesMusic  3 роки тому +2

Hey Charlese - I don't do this professionally either. I don't have a NEED to work faster, but I like to. In fact, there are a lot of facets I like to take SLOWER so that I can more enjoy the hobby (I labor over getting things "just right"), but I'd rather that I get to spend that time on things like being creative with the tool, trying out new mix options, plugins, synths, making more layers, etc rather than losing that time to technical difficulties, glitches, and inefficiencies. But as I said in the video and other comments here, I still like a lot of things about Cakewalk - so if you prefer it, awesome!

Very nice video, really useful! Still hesitating to do the switch from Cakewalk to Studio One 5 as I have external sound modules and patch names are not displayed. Just trying Prime for the time being. Any advice on patch names?

    • @BladesMusic
      @BladesMusic  3 роки тому +1

Glad it was helpful! I never really used the patch names features in Cakewalk since I have no external gear that supports it. I use a Pearl Mimic Pro and there are times I wish it would, but really, I just control it from the front face of the hardware module itself. I find that recording with a sound other than what ends up being on the track doesn't generally work for me anyway. If I am going to record the drums on a different "patch", I'm likely to just re-record them anyway since each kit not just sounds different, but reacts differently to my playing. Even though I record the MIDI, it's pretty rare that I stray to a completely different kit. I might go to something similar, but not a big departure without re-recording the MIDI.
All that said, I know that there are a lot of folks who really miss this option in Studio One. In fact, there are other similar things, like being able to send SysEx from Studio One, that are lacking and if they are needed, it's a no-go situation. I used to use a Roland drum brain and it sends cymbal chokes as Aftertouch. Until a very recent version, S1 didn't support aftertouch either. Fortunately, the Mimic sends choke data as a separate note and not as aftertouch, but had that not been the case for me at the time, I might have been tempted to stick with Cakewalk for that reason alone. Even though I don't choke cymbals a lot, it's one of those things that would have annoyed me by not being there.
You might want to check out ReaControlMidi from this page and see if it works for you: www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/ - in fact I might be checking this out for sending some SysEx to see what I can do with that with my FaderPort 8!

Thank you for this interesting video. I have used CW professionally and avocationally for over 25 years since it was a MIDI sequencer only (Pre-Sonar, Twelve Tone Cakewalk v3). Like you, I acquired S1 when Gibson abandoned Sonar. However, with BL's acquisition of Sonar (now CW by Band Lab), I returned to CW while maintaing S1 (I have version 5). I feel you skipped over many of CW's workflow advantages that are missing in S1. CW's start page is icon based. Clients like it when they see their image or logo representing the file for their production. CW allows one to solo a track from the plugin. S1 requires several mouse clicks. CW allows click and drag to select multiple tracks/channels. From CW's track view, individual tracks can be expanded/contracted with a single mouse click (other methods are available, also). In CW's track view virtually all parameters of a track/channel, including volume, pan, send, I/O and plugins can be edited without opening the inspector. In fact, with a competent control surface, the console view need never be opened in CW. CW's multi-dock allows easy transition between a track's console, piano roll, tempo map, melodyne, etc. functions since all open docks are tabbed. Additionally this window can be quickly minimized and restored with a single click of the mouse. Double click a fader or pan knob to return it to unity/center. S1 requires two hands (Ctrl-click). I could certainly go on. I don't mean to say CW is better than S1, nor is S1 better than CW. The best program of any type is the one with which the user is comfortable. Honestly, I could compile an equally long list as to why S1's workflow is better than CW. My point is, I believe CW to be every bit as capable as any DAW on the market, free or not, and may be rightly considered by any engineer evaluating her/his next DAW.

    • @BladesMusic

I agree on several of these points. I could probably list 10 more on either DAW as the advantage as well. This is why I made this as a comparison vs. a Cakewalk Bashing session: because I DO think there are a lot of things that Cakewalk does right and that I miss in Studio One. For ME, the advantages of the Studio One features in general make it the overall winner between the two. If I had to go without either of them tomorrow, I could definitely get by just fine with the other.
A few notes to your points:
      1. Solo from in plugin - I don't think I knew this was there. Not really important to me, but interesting. S and M keyboard shortcuts also allow for this is S1 and I have the FaderPort 8 (both of which also can work in Cakewalk if set to do so).
      2. I do kind of miss the parameters at the track header rather than having to go to the inspector or mixer - though I nearly always have both open anyway.
Thanks for watching and your thoughtful comments!
      3. I like the idea of tabbed interfaces, but the MultiDock always presented me with issues - mostly that things seemed to want to open there whether I wanted them to or no. I like some views there and others not and it seemed like it fought me about what I wanted - regularly.
      4. I also prefer double click to default to the ctrl-click of S1. I have found that on the FaderPort 8, Shift and touching the fader sets to zero. Pressing the pan knob down sets pan to center. I got around this by assigning a "macro key" on my multi-button mouse that does the ctrl-click.
      5.

As per the reply of the above, there are some things you missed on cakewalk as mentioned few but I want to guess your new love for for Studio one 5 wants to get you carried away as you couldn't notice this common plugin solo and some other functions that has better Studio one 5, also when you have alternative for something you wouldn't care about its weaknesses likewise some people won't care about the features Studio One has because it's not needed to them likewise, I love Studio One from the first time it came out for its clean and quality audio but to Me cakewalk is real complicated to Studio One because cakewalk raw and rigid, quality audio compared to when recording in studio one, also one thing cakewalk has that no other DAW do not have is the Studio grade gears for legend mixing engineer and some more I can't mention now, lastly cakewalk has stopped developing due to what happened while others are understudy its weaknesses to lunch out but I don't believe this if cakewalk didn't stop it would have been more greater than any DAW by now but I appreciate Band Lab for acquiring it and the latest developments on it, it will get it feet back. While I prefer Studio One in general, there are definitely some things about S1 that irritate me and some things about CW that I miss. • @BladesMusic
      @BladesMusic  2 роки тому +1

Not the same thing. Sound on Sound allows you to hear the underlying audio while you are recording AND during playback, where Play overlaps in Studio One is just on playback. In the case of Cakewalk, having the Sound on Sound option lets you hear what led into a recorded spot so you can get your bearings and there is no jarring stop of audio while you are trying to get your new takes done. In studio one, whether you have overlaps enabled or not, you don't get to hear anything on the track as soon record is engaged. There are a few reasons that Sound on Sound was cool (one for tricky layering within the same track), but most importantly to have a more natural record drop-in.

I have found that Studio One and Cakewalk prefer similarly under similar loads, though it seems that Cakewalk is more likely to drop out and Studio One feels more fluid when the load gets there. My mix sessions aren't that large, so maybe not a good judge of it here. My bounces sound as I expect them to, though over the long haul, I've definitely experienced some difficulties with things sounding as good after export as they do during the mix. This is not specific to the DAW though. It's more of a "how to master" and get volume at the end. Also, playing back through a different sound card on the same system has its own coloration that makes it hard to tell if the problem was the export, the master, the sound card drivers, or what! Of course, getting it to sound like you expect on other systems (i.e. the car) is also its own long-term challenge!

I came in at 3.something and 5.x is a pretty big change. If you want a lower cost of entry and all of the other Presonus stuff in addition to Studio One 5, you could go a with a Sphere subscription for $15/month or $165/year. I did a video on this decision for me here: ua-cam.com/video/_D1rIylMQ10/v-deo.html
      Version comparison is here: www.presonus.com/products/Studio-One/compare-versions

I have a free copy of Studio One, so I'm not sure what the paid for product has, but I do like it, especially the included voices. However, it lacks one feature that is a big deal for me, namely a staff view. I read and write music the traditional way, so having a staff view is a big deal for me. Studio One doesn't have this built in, whereas Cakewalk does. Although Studio One does support Notion, a notation-based package, as a rewire device -- for an additional cost, of course. I have a copy of Notion and I really don't care for it. The freeware package Muse is much better. Cakewalk's staff view is full featured enough where I seldom feel the need for another notation based package.
I'm a Cakewalk user, been using it since Pro Audio 9 (over 20 years). I don't consider myself to be a power user, and it has way more capabilities than I'll ever use.
The "faults" he's finding are, to me, just more a difference in procedures, and I don't find the inflexibilities that he does.
And, bottom line, Cakewalk is *free* whereas S1 has a fairly hefty price tag, plus if you want musical notation, that'll cost you even more. So for me, it's a no-brainer. Cakewalk does everything I need, plus a whole lot more. Sorry S1, I'll stick with Cakewalk.

    • @BladesMusic

One difference with the paid product is the score view, which you specifically asked about. It was added in the most recent release but is only in the Pro version, or if course the Sphere subscription. Might be worth a look at the pro demo to see how it compares. The cakewalk score view has long been a sore spot for users who want one and has not gotten upgraded much over time. Since presonus has the notion package, certainly some if that is what is in the s1 product. Sphere also includes the full notion. Also worth noting that the built in score view also includes drum and guitar tab modes.

Dude! If you just click the the + sign next to efx and pick make a new buss, it sets up a send and a bus at the same time.
So although Studio One is slick it can be done in two steps not three steps like you did. So Studio One beats it by one step.
If I am busing I usually just put my backgrounds to a background bus and lead vocals to a lead vocal bus.
I suppose if you want to have backgrounds and lead go to a vocal bus then again Studio One has it beat by one step.
You don't have to stop undo rewind record.
When you stop Cakewalk rewinds automatically and all you have to do is undo.
So again Studio One beats it by one step.
Are you sure you are a long time Cakewalk user?
I've only been using it for a month.
The prochanel is awesome and lets you put your own vst plugins inside it.
Studio One splitter is nice but I don't really need it to mix and record.
The macros could be handy however.
Does Studio one have folders where you can organize your tracks? That is just like buckets on the CLA mix hub.
Makes it so much faster to mix a song as well as less confusing. That is a game changer for me.
That is one thing I haven't heard about in Studio one, I need to research.
Yes Prosonus definitely has a more slick way but the work flow is pretty awesome in Cakewalk.
I didn't realize this was free as of 2018 or so.
I just found out. Try working in Protools and pulling menus down instead of drag and drop. Not to mention difficulty in changing sample rates from one song to another and crashing telling you that your computer Cpu is overloaded when it is not.
Studio one is definitely a little nicer but I'm glad to be out of protools as of last April 2021!
    Long live Cakewalk!

Mark - thanks for your comments. 1st, understand that some of the parts of the video are about particular topics, not just a single way to do things. The "create a send/bus" thing was actually intended to focus on Studio One Drag and Drop functionality. There are "long form" ways to add these in S1 also. That wasn't the only point. But to take the challenge, the comparison isn't "two steps, not three like you did". If I follow your path here, I get one click for the + on the send to add "something", then I select that something, then I go to the new bus it added and click the + on the bus and select the effect I want added to that bus (or click and drag it there from the browser). It's 4 clicks (3 if you had the browser already open and did the drag to the bus insert). In Studio 1 it's a single-action click and drag. And if you wanted to add the same send to 10 channels - same single-action click and drag. It exemplifies the larger point that a click and drag is faster, simpler, and (to me) more intuitive.
For the "bussing numerous channels", again this was about workflow, not just a way to do it. Expanding my example out to a full set of tracks handed to someone to mix that hasn't been bussed: going to each track and clicking the send and destination (CW) rather than Click, Shift click, select a bus - all tracks are sent there - or if you don't already have one, click them and choose to add a bus for selected tracks (S1). For me, since I start with a template that has most of what I need anyway, I don't often mess with this, but that doesn't mean it's not more efficient. Compare for 20 tracks: CW=click the track, click the bus dropdown, select the bus - do this 20 times. S1=click the first track, shift-click the last track, click the output bus on one of the tracks and they are all sent there. It's 60 clicks (3x20) in Cakewalk vs 4 clicks in S1.
I do like the fact that you can add FX chains to the ProChannel - I don't like how tiny the ProChannel view is and the complexity of stacking more stuff inside of what I envision is a channel strip. Definitely gives a lot of flexibility, but I feel that it can over complicate things - your opinion on this differs from mine, surely.
Studio One DOES have folders. It also allows you to assign a folder to a Bus channel so you can collapse the bus and its tracks within the Console view like you can in the track view. It also has the option to nest folders inside of one another. This can definitely get complicated, but it also adds to the display options.
The Splitter and Macros are both things I've only seen in Studio One. I'm sure variations on them exist in other DAWs but I don't know those. Macros are far more addressable for "normal people" than the CAL stuff in Cakewalk and lead to workflow enhancements and interface customizations. As for the Splitter - the newer 5.2 version of Studio One makes this even cooler with it appearing on the track's Inserts so you don't forget it's there. Otherwise (like the stuff embedded in the ProChannel) it could get really easy to forget about what's in the split chain and end up scratching your head trying to find "that effect" or whatever. You can accomplish what the splitter does in other ways, but not nearly as elegantly, in my opinion. Do I use it all the time? Hardly. But it's cool to know it is there.
Finally - as a "long time Cakewalk user", that mostly ended in 2017 when it was still Sonar. I've followed the developments and even did a song in it recently. After using it for at least 15 years, my abilities in Studio One are similar in about 3 years time of hobby recording.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, I still have a spot in my DAW heart for Cakewalk, so I keep up with it. I am even looking at the newest features in 2021.04 to do a video on those.
Again - thanks for watching and for your comments. Conversation definitely helps to edify the community of users!

Since Cakewalk/Sonar and everyone who establish their productivity on those we're wrongfully abused by Gibson profiteering, any coin toss comparison between two Daws, Cakewalk should always win. If only to help re-establish to prominence and make up for the years of lost development that Gibson caused.
It infuriated me that Cakewalk was not supported by Windows 7. Could not be installed. Microsoft certainly wasn't going to create updates Windows 7 to fix the problem. And then Gibson buys Cakewalk, charges $200 for lifetime upgrade, knowing that they were going to discontinue development. For these reasons Cakewalk should be recommended revived and fully supported. If you believe in Justice.

I looked at it a VERY long time ago and didn't get on with it. I looked again when considering Studio One and Reaper as alternatives to Sonar. Maybe this is a wrong way of thinking, but the fact that it is a Magix product now really turned me off. I've seen other things that Magix gets a hold of and they have gone down hill. Prime example for me is the Xara graphics product. When it was owned by Xara Ltd, it had groundbreaking features for a product in its price range, but as soon as Magix got a hold of it, the feature updates went very consumer vs pro, and it is a constant money grab for new version features that are few and far between. This is a case where the distribution company negatively affected my interest in the product. I also read a TON of reviews and there were too many things that turned me off to digging into the product.

@@encapsulatio When I did my selection of new DAW to replace Cakewalk, I looked at Reaper and I think it took a second spot to Studio One. If I remember right, it was the complexity of getting setup and the multlitude of options available in Reaper that led me to Studio One as my choice. I haven't looked at it in a bit. I can tell you that the main reason that Reaper appealed to me was how you could make it look with new themes. But that was also one of the reasons I actually landed on S1 - I got to focus more on the sound and recording than on the visuals. I kind of thought if I stuck with Reaper, my first inclination would be the visuals and digging into the complexities, rather than focusing on the audio and usability items. There are a TON of folks with reviews of Reaper - unfortunately, one of them is not me.

Just curious why compare those 2. Why not one against the rest to explain why you went with what you now use. You said that some of us go with a product until we have no choice because it lacks a must have feature. You said it as if it was a negative thing or did I misunderstand? I think that you should first decide which one is the one you like the most and go with it, no matter the price, unless that price is just crazy unaffordable. Going with free just to not pay, is foolish, especially if you use it to make money.

    • @BladesMusic
      @BladesMusic  3 роки тому

Perry: my comparison between these is based on familiarity. There are a lot of DAWs out there and I happen to know these two because I transitioned from one to the other - not when the first was free, but when I was a long time fan and paying customer. It only happens to be free now and the same quality as when I left. In fact, to your point, my preference is to pay for Studio One because I prefer its features and function to Cakewalk, but I still keep up with my old GoTo DAW, Cakewalk because I was so familiar with it for so long. If there comes a point where it exceeds what I get from Studio One, certainly I'll switch back, but the only way I'd know is if I keep up with it.
As for the others out there, like Reaper or Cubase - I simply don't have the knowledge of them nor the funds and time to invest to do the comparisons. I could have done a "why I use Studio One" video, but that's not really the whole story. There are a lot of people who left Cakewalk for Studio One back in the day of the Gibson collapse and a lot who stuck around the Cakewalk bakery to see what develops. This video was made for me, for them, and for those who are still wondering what the benefits are to paying for a DAW when there is such a good one available for free. Make sense?

Thanks for the comment. If I had and knew Cubase, I'd do such a comparison, but I don't (and I don't). There definitely areas of Cakewalk that are dated, for sure. I bet a lot of people would say that there is a lot old code hanging around in there as well, though with the number of times Cakewalk changed hands and developers (except that staff that shuttled around with the product), it's not surprising. I am glad to see that the Cakewalk team is still building on this application, but there are definitely a LOT of areas in the application that could use not just a refresh, but a complete gutting - still holding a lot of old Windows UI elements even. Thanks for watching and again for the comment.

I think Bandlab may have abandoned development of Cakewalk as there hasn't been any updates in the past 4 years. Most DAWs get updated every year with new updates or new version. I left Sonar back in 2013 and switched to Studio One Pro. It was the best move and investment I ever made in my work flow. It reminded me of Sonar when I first started using it but realise if was a lot more simpler and intuitive that made Sonar a bit clunky and dated.

Well, since the dev team for Studio One was once part of Cubase, from my understanding, I'm not surprised by this. That said, from everything I have read, Studio One is much leaner than Cubase because it was built from the ground up early on and didn't have all of the baggage of a legacy program like Cubase. Cakewalk/Sonar has that same burden of its own weight.

    • @BladesMusic

Maybe I could have, but as I mentioned near the beginning of the video, I'd tried to make this one a few times and kept running into one issue or another and this is what I ended up with. I added a Table of Contents to the video to give some jump points if you wanted to get to specific things or at least it shows an overview of the things I cover in it. I could probably do another video as long as this and still have lots to cover. So, the summary here is "I prefer most of the things in Studio One but there are some areas where Cakewalk still has an edge. I like both and you might too". If I had one send-off message that I could have added it would be that both are very capable, and maybe the TITLE of the video of "which is better?" ends with a "it's up to you" kind of answer, not some definitive from me because it is quite subjective and there is not an absolute answer to the question. Hope that helps in some way.
