Thank you for clearing this up as it makes Kontakt so much more useful in a Cakewalk Project. In 2021 you can control how many outputs Cakewalk creates in the dialog box on the bottom right. Uncheck max outputs and name your number. That alleviates the deletions. Brilliant work! Very Grateful.🙏🙂

I am 61 and new to all of this digital music production. After exploring many different DAWs and not interested in spending much money just yet, Cakewalk is where I am going to focus for a while. Your videos are a huge help! Showing various ways to setup Kontakt was helpful to get a bigger picture of how things can be "wired up" in the program.
Hi William, thanks for watching. Yes, I think Cakewalk is an awesome way to find out if this is something you will really get into. Many decide to stick with it as their main DAW, as its very powerful, others may decide on something else. I also use Studio ONE, and I'll be doing some videos on that soon.

And I was just appreciating the irony that Mike uses at the beginning of each of his videos (though not all) when he says: "If you enjoy the content of the video be sure to hit the 'like button' and if you dislike it then hit the 'dislike button' twice!" - which effectively cancels any dislike 😂😉
100% excellent Kontakt instruction tutorial. For the beginner this is like walking blindfold through a minefield with one leg tied behind your back. But your clear, concise instructions are a light in that darkness. Many of us would simply give up if we couldn`t find our way. Thank you.

So in CW version 2020.11 (Build 090, 64 bit) there is a box in the insert synth dialogue box that allows you to specify the number of tracks / track pairs to create. That might override any other setting you've got regarding tracks.
Also, I did the default install and it put the DLL in HERE... C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 64 bit following the default prompts. There is another folder with the 32 bit dll. If you followed the default promts and can't find it, it should be there. If not, you can search your system for Kontact.dll

He had a load of MIDI tracks relating to the MIDI element of the tracks. But it creates a lot of spaghetti with connections.
12:26 Preparation
Have your Cakewalk up to date.
Add an instance of Kontakt. Open Kontakt and double click to add empty instruments. Name each instrument.
13:58 Outputs view.
Select Batch Functions > Clear output section...
Save current output section state... > VST plugin.
15:15 2020 Method
15:35 Add Kontakt with Instrument Track Per Output, with Stereo Audio Outputs.
Delete any of the many new tracks created which you don't need.
17:32 Change 2nd instrument's output to number 2. Do the same for further instruments and give them their own outputs.
18:30 Preferred 2020 Method
For if you've got enough memory to spare.
Using 3 instances of Kontakt, one instance for each category of instrument. Helps you keep organised, not totally necessary and it uses a little more resources but not as much as multiple simple instrument tracks.
Great content as always Mike, thanks! Something to be aware of for folks trying this with newer Cakewalk/Kontakt. I did this in January 2024 with Cakewalk 2023.09 (Build 75) and Kontakt 7 and found that I needed to perform one additional step. When adjusting the outputs on the various Kontakt instruments being loaded for the song, I found it necessary to also adjust the midi input channel. Started with midi chan 1 and just incremented by one for each instrument, same as with the outputs. If I didn't do this all instruments were set to midi chan 1 and they all played at once during performance or playback. Love Mikes content and the way he explains this stuff has allowed me to learn to use a DAW in 2024!

I've had versions of Cakewalk for years but just recently got Kontakt 7. The only way I knew how to use it was to create multiple instances of Kontakt for each instrument. This video helped me with correcting that and your comment was the finishing touch.

Hi Mike, firstly thanks for this video. Secondly sorry to ask a question on a two year old video, perhaps you'll just direct me to a video I haven't picked up on yet. So, having midi tracks showing is new for me and quite a clutter. Do you pop them in a folder. Am I right that the only way you get to hear the Kontakt instrument is to select the midi channel not the audio channel. Then, when you're recording, do you record on the Midi (so you can perhaps quantize or edit a note or velocity) or do you record straight to the audio track? Thanks.
Hi Tim, you are correct, you record on the MIDI track. Also, yes, popping them in a folder helps to reduce clutter :)

I am facing a problem in 2020 Method which you talked about that i am simply following the same as you said but at the last of 2020 method my cakewalk opens only 16 Tracks instead of 32 tracks so for this reason i do not have extra 16 tracks for deleting so i start working on these tracks but when i play an instrument which is in 2 by name it also triggers my 1st Instrument (channe)l also so i hear two voices 1 and 2 track simultaneously. My cakewalk version is 2020.08 (Build 100, 64 Bit). Sir please help me to rectify this error. Thank You Very Much. VIKAS Gupta.
Hi Mike, I thought I would have a go at Kontakt, so I downloaded the free version. I followed your instructions for the 2020 version but with the new version of CbB (Version: 2020.04 (Build 179)) in the "Insert Soft Synths Options" there is now the option to add the number of tracks you need for an instance of Kontakt (say 3 for strings, 3 for brass and so on). So you may not need to do the "Preparation" any more and have 32 tracks come up when you load an instance of Kontakt. I also tried this on a few other VSTi's but that didn't work except for a couple of drums synths, EZ Drummer and Session Drummer by Cakewalk. It may work on other drums, I don't know. Funny what you can find out when you've got time on your hands. Keep up the good work.

Thanks again Mike for an awesome video, clear concise and with background as to why not to do something as well as what to do. You've saved me a ton of RAM when working on projects which is great as I'm about to start some orchestral pieces and those are probably going to have a LOT of tracks.

I'm ready to lose it. I've been trying to get this thing to work properly for four months, and the only way I can seem to do it is with individual simple Kontakt tracks. Whenever I try to put multiple instruments on one Kontakt, it doesn't work. Here's the scenario:
I have Chris Hein Compact horns. I put a trumpet in first, with MIDI channel one, output 1-2.
Tenor sax second, MIDI channel 2, output 3-4
Bari Sax MIDI channel 3, output 5-6
Set the MIDI channels on each track to the corresponding one.
Set output to Master.
Set input to None, although one of the three tracks will say *none* on the dropdown, but actually show Omni. I've also tried setting it to a random MIDI in, like a keyboard controller that I'm not actually using but is listed.
Play all three - fine, I hear everything.
Solo the trumpet - nothing. Solo the sax - I hear it. Solo the bari - nothing.
Put the MIDI information on separate MIDI tracks, with Kontakt as the output and the correct MIDI channel. Again, when they all play, great. But solo one? It only works if all three actual Kontact tracks (the instrument tracks) are solo as well.
I can use it like that, I guess. But it's not what you've discussed, and I know it's something I'm doing wrong. I set up the default as you suggested, but for some reason channel 3 is first (!) I figured let me toss the whole thing and start over, which I did in a new "test" song, but the same issue with the combined tracks happened. I can't seem to have a combined instance that lets me solo one track successfully.
Any suggestions are welcome. As an extra - the Hot Keys on Chris Hein horns only seem to work when they're two octaves above where they're set to (and the tracks aren't transposed). I thought it wasn't working at all until I accidentally set the MIDI hot key triggers two octaves higher than they should have been, and it works. So setting the hot key to C1 only works when the note is C3.
I am using a Kontact 61 keyboard and Cakewalk by Bandlab. How do I use my sustain pedal? It's hooked up but not adding sustain to my instruments. THANKS!

I used to only record on Cakewalk 2013 version, then my laptop died, now I've been using G.band. I recently downloaded Cakewalk from Bandlab, so I could use the Kontakt player with Jacob Collier's choir app👍 Somehow, watching your video, I got the Kontakt app to record & playback (not sure how?), but my Midi keyboard not working in C.walk yet....played off the app keyboard. Nothing on Cakewalk looks familiar to me at all any more... I'm going to have to start from scratch to learn it again. Can you tell me which of your videos I should start with? And how to get my Midi to play on Cakewalk? (Works with app stand alone) I appreciate your channel, thanks!!
Hey Mike. Can I make a request? You're the best teacher and I really need some help and I'm sure other do as well. Could you make a video on how to setup/route Kontakt drums, (ex. Abbey Road Drummer) in Cakewalk? I want to have seperate tracks for each drum piece. I've tried following other videos.and posts but they are so confusing. I spent an entire afternoon just figuring out why in Abbey Road drummer, my tom 1 was sounding as a cymbal. Finally sorted it out. But I know you could show us how to properly set the drums up in Cakewalk. And I am using an e drum kit to trigger the drums. Please, please! I'd be forever in your debt.
Very informative video... Thank you, but I have an additional question that maybe you'll know... I have a NI Komplete S49 midi controller and a MK3 Maschine Controller... When I load Maschine VST and hit the drum pads, it works fine... but when I load Komplete VST, it loads the sound and registers on the keyboard screen but when I press the keys to play something.... there's no sound or Midi information coming through... At first, I thought it was with the keyboard, but when I use ableton or other DAWs it works fine... Do you have any idea why? Any advice would be appreciated

My experience is based around Pro Audio 9 days - I was competent in those days 😁 My new setup is CBB build 021, Kontakt Komplete 13, Kontrol S88, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. Having all sorts of MIDI issues, think I don't have a grasp of MIDI assignment beyond the days of old external synth modules & one or two hardware MIDI interfaces....😫

Some advice needed, pls. Following this method (preferred 2020 method) I ended up with separate instruments inside one Kontakt instance routed to separate tracks in CbB - nice, but when I enter on one track some MIDI information in piano roll ...it will be played on ALL TRACKS :( This one midi track is triggering simultaneously all instruments in Kontakt. How can I make it in a way that I can have different MIDI content on each track and trigger each instrument in Kontakt separately? Thanks in advance

Great and helpful video. But Alas, Kontakt 7 breaks the rename-multiple instruments function.
You show how to create a scratch-template by creating multiple empty instruments in the Kontakt browser within Cakewalk by Bandlab, and then renaming the instruments to fit the purpose of the project (naming them by "number" in your example). However, in Kontak7.0.11, this causes Kontakt -- and Cakewalk - to crash.
I can double-click and rename 2 or 3 of the blank instruments, but trying that on the next blank instrument crashes everything. This has happened repeatedly, even after a Restart of my Windows 10 system. Sigh...

I first downloaded the free pocketBlakus VST, then understood that it what written for KONTAKT.
I have then downloaded Kontakt 6 free, installed it inside Cakewalk, and it worked after some additional effforts.
But after 2 or 3 trials with this Cello instrument, KONTAKT informed me that this free edition was not able to run the Cello instrument unless i would buy the commercial version KONTAKT Cmplete version, 200 $.
For the time beeing i am a beginner and will try some other libraries and VSTs.
A bit disappointed ...
Since I wrote the previous post, I've added a 4th track - Piano. When I create a separate output, it assigns it to i/2 which is the Upright Bass outputs. So. while it plays the Piano part it comes out of the Bass track as well as the Bass. I can't find anyway to edit it so that the output is7/8. Meanwhile the Steel Guitar is channeled to 5/6, but the Acoustic Guitar (3/4) comes out both in 3/4 and 5/6. If I mute the Acoustic Guitar (3/4), The Steel Guitar (5/6) doesn't play at all. Setting up the first two tracks worked perfectly, but tracks 3 and 4, doing the exact same thing, are not.
I've got to add a P.S. When I play the Kontakt keyboard for the Pian which should be 7/8 but is labeled 1/2 (Same as the Bass the Piano 1/2 plays (not the Bass 1/2) and I get the Piano Sound. When I play the keyboard for the Acoustic Guitar (5/6) the mete goes up and down accordingly, but there is no sound. And again, In Cakewalk, thePiano plays on the same track as the bass and the acoustic guitar track plays on the Steel track. Mute the Acoustic Guitar and the Steel track is dead.
I've watched this video over and over trying to figure out if I've missed something. I have 3 instruments load - Track 1 Upright Bass, Track 2 Acoustic Guitar and those 2 tracks work fine. However, Track 3 Pedal Steel Guitar - even though it is set up as it should be per the video and comparing them to the first 2 tracks - shows by the internal Kontakt Meter that it's playing as it should, I don't get any sound out of the Cakewalk, EXCEPT the sound of track 2 Acoustic Guitar on track 3. If I mute the Acoustic Guitar track, then I get no sound at all and the meters in track don't show anything. It's 4:30 P>M> Sunday evening, and I've been working on this since a little after 5:00 A.M. with a short break for breakfast and for lunch.And like I said, I've gone over the video a bunch of time trying to see if I'm missing something.
Can we do the same method of having 16 outs with only one instance of Kontakt in cubase 10.5?
Great vid. Thank you. I just purchased the NI S-49 keyboard. Do you have a vid that explains how to track real time into Cakewalk? So far, I can play the keyboard via Komplete Kontrol stand-alone, but unsuccessful via a Cakewalk Kontakt instance.

Good, I got some NI software and Kontroller, so was looking for a DAW that I could work with everything NI provides. Didn't really want to fork anything over for Ableton Live just yet, although I can get a student discount.
Hi Mike, I have a problem with cackewalk such that sound that plays from the DAW is far different from this after being exported and then played for example in Windows Media player (The frequency spectrum seems different and the difference is hearable) I am exporting to wav 44kHz ,24bit. Did You have tha same problem ? If so where to look for the solution. Cheers ;)
I keep having a problem with the latest instrument I load plays on the current channel and the previous channel. I have different midi outputs for each instrument in kontakt, even tried different inputs in cakewalk but no success. I don't know how to select different instruments in kontakt. The last instrument I load is the only one. Does anyone know to how to select the previous loaded instrument(s)? Thanks.
I use UA interface Apollo X8 Thunerbolt on PC. It works with the original Sonar Platinum, can't get it to work with latest Cakewalk by Bandlab. Is the thunderbolt interface not supported by Cake Bandlab?
Does anyone know if Mike's using the free Kontakt 5.1 Player, or the full blown version in this tutorial ?

Could you PLEASE show us how this is done in Studio One 5.1? All of the tracks there are not automatically created and routed like they are in Cakewalk -- unless I'm doing something wrong...

Can I ask if, having created the outputs using this method, you see kontakt ignore the outputs defined?
I set up 12 outputs and assigned 8 instruments using midi 1 to output 1, midi 2 to output 2 etc. All worked brilliantly for a few minutes then various instruments ignored the routing and started sending to output 1. In kontakt I used the spanner drop-down to look at midi and output and they were exactly as set up. Cakewalk output and midi matched kontakt settings yet instruments were only routing to st 1/2. Help!!!!

Hi Mike, re: 4:44 in the video: I followed exactly to this point. Then when I click the icon to open Kontakt in the Synth Rack, it opens a little picture of a keyboard and nothing else. There's no options to choose any instruments. In fact, whenever I try to open Kontakt in a new project, I just get this little virtual keyboard controller.
The very first time I installed Kontakt and opened it, it worked. Then the second time i tried to open Kontakt, and every time since, I just get the little keyboard.
I have tried re-installing the kontakt 6 player, but it didn't help. Any suggestions, anyone?

I've download the free version of Kontakt 6 and have sonar 7, however I can't get sonar to recognize Kontakt. I try to add the Native file to scan for plugin instruments but there is no VST that it recognizes . Perhaps it doesn't work as a plugin? Maybe just a standalone? By itself I see the instrument and it works, but I can't get sonar to recognize it. Any suggestions? Thanks.
My CakeWalk can't read any of the instruments that Kontakt has, it does not show up when I try to import through the VST manager setting in CakeWalk.....do you know how I can solve this problem? Thankyou
So i am trying to install drummic'a in kontakt. Drummic'a does not come with an installer anymore. Is there a way to put in Kontakt? Please help!!!
I had a project that crashed immediately after loading. It turned out to be Kontakt, loaded as a single instrument, that contained a instrument loaded from the Quick-load list, though instruments from a library seem fine? Never found the exact cause, just stopped using Kontakt.
I added a new Kontakt instrument add tried to set it up (thinking perhaps the original instrument had become corrupt and causing the problems). However, when I set up the individual tracks, they were all automatically assigned to 1/2. And once again, I can't find any way to edit that.
My Windows is 64-bit but it doesn't find the contact software in VSTs

everytime i load up kontakt in cakewalk and load an instrument (Analog Dreams) cakewalk crashes. is there any solution?
Cakewalk don't load Kontakt 7, log says: "known as bad plugin, skipped" and Davinci Resolve too.

I have downloaded kontakt player but I cant connect the instraments to kakewalk, I have tried everything but nothing seems to work.
no sound from midi keyboard, until i change from midi ch1 to omni..but mouse click produce a sound on midi ch1...i do not know what do to anymore, i tried everything.

Have recently upgraded to current Cakewalk (from Sonar 1 on XP) I know, I'm a bit of a dinosaur but I do have (quite) a few more grey hairs than you! I do not have Kontakt, but have Eiderol Orchestra, Super Quartet and VSC dxi which I manage extremely well. Have also downloaded loads of soundfonts and sfz files but am really struggling to make things work. Can you , please, drag me kicking and screaming into the 21st Century??

Hi Phil - although a Kiwi is a fine nationality to be, I'm afraid I'm an Aussie who grew up in the UK. You know, I spent many years using Soundfonts, and I still miss some of my library. Hi Mike. I think I solved the 32 generated tracks issue. Not sure, but it seems to be a bug with Cakewalk or some stars that don't align between Cakewalk and Kontact. I'm using Cakewalk version 2020.04. When you load Kontact and after selecting "Instrument Track Per Output", uncheck "Max. Available" and enter 16 in the "Limit To" text box in the "Number of Tracks / Track Pairs to Create" section. Be careful here, I actually have to enter "6" then "1" to get the text box to read "16" (that definitely seems to be a bug). Now when you click "OK", only 16 tracks are created. You might try this and see if it works for you. Cheers!

Hi! I hope i can get some help! I do this, i adjust the volume for each vst and when i hit play some of the instruments volume changes and goes to minimum! What i do wrong? That’s the best channel !👍
Hello. When i put the 16 tracks with Kontakt, select the first track and play just one key, it plays two notes (note+octave). Why?
Do you think you could help me? I don't have the option to add a Kontakt synth. I have the player downloaded and can use it on it's own, but can't find a way to use it in Cakewalk

I face one i can not record audio track. Instrument track midi track is i can record. But as soon i open a audio track and arm the track for recording i get a pop up massage, unable to record new audio file for recording. I tried every thing like re install cakewalk, drivers but nothing work. So please can you make video on this point and also which audio driver is good for cakewalk.

I can't see kontact as an instrument to pick. How do I get cakewalk to see kontact as an instrument to be loaded?

I know I'm way too late but the reason there are 32 tracks is because you didn't set your max to 16 on the property page when you selected track type.
How can this method be used for Kontact Player? Good stuff but I have a Kontact Keyboard that has great attributes that only work with Kontact Player.
I followed the steps for making the 16 channels but the Kontakt tool bar does not show an option on where I can select a new channel to add a new Kontakt instrument. I am new to all of this and a bit confused. Also do all the Kontakt libraries work with just the Kontakt player I downloaded several and two do not see to appear. Any ideas

Another great video Mike! Just wondering wouldn't get the 16 tracks you wanted and not 32 if you only made 8 empty instruments in Kontakt instead of 16? Not sure why u ended up with 32 Kontakt tracks that u had to delete 16 of them. Thanks
Hi Will, good suggestion but unfortunately that doesn't work. I think the 32 relates to stereo pair, with 64 being the max outputs from Kontakt.

Amazing! I have trouble recording audio tracks. For some reason my Korg M3 doesn't play through the interface, but plays through Kontakt. If I create an audio track it won't play, but if I create an instrument track it plays using kontakt. I really need to use the sounds from the M3 itself. How can I do that 100% of the time?
