We are using Character Sketches: From the Pages of Scripture, Illustrated in the World of Nature by Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts. I think there are four volumes. We have volumes 2 and 3. There are themes (joyfulness, availability, endurance, alertness, flexibility, etc.), and each theme has four chapters. Each chapter has a nature story, a Scriptural reference, and characteristics and physical features about a particular animal (Great Plains bison, northern flying squirrel, American coot, mosquito, etc.) Each chapter then has a Scripture event, a Scripture background, and a character sketch (about a Biblical person). There are 28 chapters /7 themes (4 chapters per theme). It blends nature with Bible. My 15 y.o. son loves this book, and so do I.

Part of nature journaling is experiencing weather. If you skip going outside because the weather isn't perfect, you are actually teaching kids that the world is too scary a place and they should avoid it by staying home. Go outside every day. If weather prevents you from journaling outside, take photos, or pick up a piece of nature to study inside (make an egg cartoon specimen container and have a 5 minute scavenger hunt) then take shelter to ask questions and discover wonders to research at the library, study the weather -- what does 40f feel like? What should I wear? Learn the beaufort wind scale and ask kids to guess the wind speed using the guide.

Thank you for sharing your ideas on how to adapt nature study when the weather is not cooperating! You are right, if we spend time waiting for that perfect day, we may never get out there! Your comments reminded me of this post on how to approach nature study in winter:

It is never too late to start nature study! Nature study is part of the feast that you can serve right through high school! Here are some great posts on nature study as well as serving the feast in high school to encourage you as you add this subject in!
