    It helps a lot to see the variety of entries in your journals, and I love the idea of the perpetual journal pages at the back.

    This will be our first year homeschooling and this is the best video I've seen on nature journaling! I love how you have broken things down and how you set it up for your children. Cannot wait to start now! The idea of taking a picture and then actually journaling at home is brilliant. We are in Florida and with mosquitoes in the morning and heat in the afternoon it is often difficult to be outside for very long so this is genius!

    To get young children to start lookinf at shapes, you might point out a turtle and ask them if it looks like a circle, a square, a triangle, or a rectangle. Then back home, start with the shape they assigned and help them draw or collage the turtle with that shape.
    November looks like a really good drawing of a cypress tree in a pond with water lilies.

    I only have my youngest left home educating, we base everything around nature, art, science and math - we do art in every subject.
    We have a rough copy book, good copy book - then favorites go on canvas on the easle on the nature table until the next piece of canvas work replaces it on the easle and it goes onto the wall.
    In his rough copy book he does whatever his painting completely freehand (we prefer watercolour pencils then going over it with watercolour paints). Then I will get my nature journal out and we will do a lesson on technique and he will copy. He then does his good copy in the better quality watercolour paper. And then he does his final copy on canvas.
    He is doing some amazing artwork doing it this way

    wow, wish I had this info as a young mom. Parenting & home schooling is so very demanding. I wasn't successful in it. Had no family support. Excellent video, great ideas and tips. New Subscriber to your channel. Thank you. 💓🌸🙏🌌

    Loving all your videos! Do you have a video or curriculum that goes over the phrenology circles in detail? They are new to me 😊❤️

    Your 5 year old's nature journals are amazing! I have a 7 yo and 5 yo who are doing nature journals and their drawing skills are just not...that... great lol. Mine too! I'm curious if you do drawing lessons separately? I'll have to look into that How to draw book you mentioned! Thank you for your videos! I look forward to them! :)

      Sara, YES!!! Drawing lessons are separate from Nature Journals! My five year old spends HOURS a day tracing, so that's his own personal "drawing lesson". But last year, my mom (who loves art), took two kids at a time to her house (alternating every other week) and would teach them drawing lessons from a lovely book called Drawing Textbook. It's a very simple introduction to drawing.

    You should try watercolor pencils ! You can have the older ones activate with water at a later time

    My kids and I like your nature notebooks! Would you share where you got them from?
    Edit: Never mind! I see the link in the show notes now. Thank you for giving us a peek into your nature notebooks and for sharing how to just get started doing nature study. For a mom of 4 who is not very confident in science and has trouble making the time to get outside more with a nursing baby and 3 older kids (preK through 6th grade), your insight is so helpful and inspiring. 💜

    Thanks so much for your videos! Do you follow a particular nature study curriculum? How do you decide on what part of nature to focus on/study? Thanks again!

      I’ve written my own series based on the topics from Handbook of Nature Study. We also take daily walks which means we just observe the nature we find in our neighborhood:) we’ve followed the AmblesideOnline nature study rotation in the past but have followed our own curiosity this year. Hope that helps! Naturestudyhacking.com is where you may find my nature guides

      I believe you are seeing the Reader’s Digest book titled “The Book of North American Birds” that has an owl on the cover- I love that series for nature books to keep handy- they are great for copying animal and plants into nature journals!

    when do i start having my child do a nature journal?

    • @gbcflower
      @gbcflower 4 роки тому +2

      When we started nature journals in our home, I gave my just-turned-4-year-old her own journal so that she could participate. She loved it. Although her work isn't the neatest, she has learned alongside her siblings.

    • @joycherrick
      @joycherrick  4 роки тому +1

      I don't start until a child is 6 years old or in first grade. I think starting too young can cause frustration - but I know children with older siblings do enjoy being apart of the activity!

    The journal that you are using is A4 size? I guess you can't use marker on those?

    • @joycherrick
      @joycherrick  3 роки тому

      I use an ink pen and it doesn’t bleed through. And yes, I love the A4 size- though standard sizes work very well!
