  • A bucketlist item that we had been waiting for, we finally get to sail in New York City.
Not only did we sail past the Statue of Liberty but we conquered the East River currents, like the famed Hell's Gate, and found the most beautiful anchorage right next to Lady Liberty herself.
We also got to sail under many famous bridges, past UN headquarters in NYC, past Ellis Island and where the Hudson River meets the East River and more New York Harbour sights.
We also try to share what we learned about currents, planning and more!
Let us know what you think of our adventure!

I dont know how this video popped into my feed. I am a professional mariner, and you're in my stomping grounds. I was looking for my tug and barge in the video. Glad you made it through the gate in one piece. One minor nitpick, its Hell Gate not Hell's Gate, like many New York names it's a corruption of the Dutch name. Hellegadt means bright passage in dutch. A little trivia: it's a tidal strait, meaning its open at both end. The current there is a result of differing water levels in Long Island Sound and New York Harbor, it's not directly related to the transit ofbthe moon. As a mariner we are just as careful about the currents as you were. I keep a tide book in my pocket while on the tug. With a barge load of oil we try to transit at slack no more than 1 hour on either side of that time.

Thank you for the correction on the name and the little bit of history as to where it came from!
And the other interesting learning points in your comment! I'll never understand how the water levels can be different in the harbour versus the Sound but at least we had the tide charts to help!
Fun fact john used to work on tug and barge too in the Torres strait of Australia! Do you always work the NYC Harbour??
We were nervous to transit through but some friends advised us on tides and it was very manageable. Even though our engine was overheating and we had to add freshwater every ten minutes!!

@@ShesTheSkipper they only let me ho as far as New Haven these days. Which is fine with me, after 30 years I have no desire to be out in the ocean anymore.
I am glad that John has some commerical experience, it will come in handy on a trip as long as yours. Please keep posting so we know the pirates didnt get you:)

A second nitpick: they didn't sail past JFK Airport. It was LaGuardia.

Great video and transit through Hell's Gate - the airport you passed was really LGA (LaGuardia).

I think this is my favorite video so far. Looks like you are getting into a groove with your editing. That's a wonderful trip through the east river and also past Lady Liberty although as a power boater I've not had to worry quite as much as you with the currents. Thanks for sharing your trip.

Definitely would be a but different with a reliable power boat engine versus our old volvo Penta!!

I was in the Marine industry for 35 years. During that time owning / part of a family Marina boatyard I use some subs. One of them that might interest you was a Volvo Marine dealer / service dealer by the name of McDonnell Marine in Connecticut. They are first rate for service advice and engine parts. The owner Brian is one of the best tech’s I have ever encountered. I’m sure if you buy your parts from them they will help in any way possible to discuss engine problems.
    Good luck!

I subscribed to your emails some time back but have just started watching your videos. I always find videos of cruising NY to be interesting especially the current at HELL Gate. FYI, it's Hell not Hell's. There's also a Hell Gate in GA and I've been corrected several times for calling it Hell's Gate, which it is not. Good luck with your southerly travels.
