  • This week we resume our trip sailing down to Norfolk, Virginia to start our journey travelling south on the famous Intracoastal Waterway, or the ICW. It is not only beautiful but also helps us avoid the notorious Cape Hatteras, a challenge to the most experienced of sailors.
    Mother Nature, the weather gods and the elements are all much more forgiving compared to the week that we just had and we get to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery and sunsets on the trip so far!
    We wish we could have stayed longer and explored more but visas wait for no one - especially in the US!

    That is the worst idea ever. You end up doing more damage to your motor before you replace the gaske

    • @ShesTheSkipper
      @ShesTheSkipper  2 роки тому

      Lucky for us it was a short term solution as with our American visas running out and the weather meaning we had to go intracoastal, we had to motor without a choice! Staying put to fix it was not an option according to border patrol, and I do not mess with American immigration! Though I appreciate the comment as it has crossed my mind recently if this is a recommended solution or only a last minute jury rig in a pinch kind of solution! Thanks for the comment!

      I understand temp repairs. But, that shit does more harm than good. Not only does your coolant cool the head but it has passages in the block. Once you repair the gasket, you have the impossible task of clearing the block.
      It may not show immediately, but you WILL pay the price of introducing that crap in your engine.

    When the time comes to replace the head gasket you must check for a warped head. The warped head / blown head gasket is mainly caused by overheating in the engines past. Another temporary fix for a blown head gasket is to use Finley ground paper in the fresh water system.

    hey guys good videos - i have a 5.5 draft with 50 ft mast. what do you think of icw between beaufort and charleston with that draft and mast>? wanted to avoid going out to sea in that area - pluss would like to chill in myrtle a bit at barefoot landing. just worried about draft and mast

    • @ShesTheSkipper
      @ShesTheSkipper  2 роки тому +1

      Hey there! Cally here, I have now done that leg solo in my new boat (5'3" draft) on the ICW. Touched bottom once just before the bridge before Charleston southbound but it was soft mud and I got off easily. I highly recommend Bob424 Long Tracks for any ICW travel (Google it, can overlay on your charts) and your mast height should be fine there but I was still religious about checking each and every bridge just in case! Hope that helps!

      It's actually been okay since then but we agree its not ideal. If we did swap we would definitely be looking at a Yanmar, the Europeans are good at sports cars, wine and food but can't say much for their Marine engines 😂 #lovetheeuropeansdespite

      @@ShesTheSkipper If so, get a Beta Marine engine.. Same quality, low cost and they don't price gouge you on the spare parts. Volvo and Yanmar are borderline criminal when it comes to the spare parts pricing. And on parts they don't manufactur themselves...

      Oh good to know we had not heard of that before. We will write it down. We also looked at the Kubota ones because they are universal tractor parts which was appealing! If you hear anymore about these types of engines, good or bad reviews, let us know!!

    When you remove the head, check it for flatness. A straight edge and feeler gauges needed... Only removing the head and just put on a new gasket, that's usually not a solution. Safe travels.

    • @ShesTheSkipper
      @ShesTheSkipper  5 років тому +1

      We have gone with the short term solution here until we can get to a place to be able to do it properly. We want to make sure there is a good machine shop around in case the head is warped so we can put it back together the right way the first time!
      Not to mention finding a place with that machine shop AND a Volvo Penta dealer in the same place is proving more rare than we anticipated! 😋
      Appreciate the tips though R.E. Hill, these are always helpful to keep in mind in case it was something we wouldn't think of ourselves!!
