With my tests I've concluded that the eos without any noise reduction has 10-11 stops of DR exactly, but when noise reduction is involved and utilized to it's maximum, it climbs up to 1 stop below the alexa so about 13.5. Both are 14bit sensors capable of resolving up to 14 stops with an SNR of 1, but where the Alexa has a clear advantage is its Dual gain output, which nets it an extra stop. Funny thing is that when the dual iso function of the eos m is used, the DRis neck and neck with the Alexa, giving it close to 15 stops of DR, but at a massive cost to resolution. The best I've gotten out of the EOS M with Dual iso and 14bit mode still active is about 1.6MP while the Alexa can do 4,6MP in RAW and 2MP in Prores, so it still wins by a huge margin.
Meh, depends on how much you make off of your video work. The EOS M does pretty decent for its weight class, especially if you play to its strengths. It's nice that we have so many great options for all budgets! And it is definitely diminishing returns the more expensive you go.
try the OG BMCC 2.5k - the Fairchild sensor in it is very close to an Alexa. In fact, ON Semiconductors that manufacture the ALEV 3 sensor for Arri bought out Fairchild for $2.4 billion, only 4 years after the BMCC 2.5k's release.
i know this is now a year old, but since then the crop mood version of magic lantern has come out, and a whole lot of the 'buginess' of Magic Lantern has been resolved. Personally, I now love my two eos m cameras with ML on them. But the main point here is like comparing apples to oranges, I paid 100 bucks for my cameras. Some of us just can't afford high end stuff, even if it's used, but no matter what camera you use, a lot of computing power and costs go into the editing side, and lenses also. Also, the eos m is an aps-c , not a super 35 sensor as stated.
You should redo it and test 3k mode thats true 3000 resolution on canon M and not lineskipped 1080p that you shot with, 5k is not a true 5k mode, its upscaled (stretched left-right) and it resolves about 2.3k, not as sharp as 2.5k but good thing about 3k is that you can shoot with CCTV lenses toget shallower DOF cause some are f1.4 across the range of 12-100mm
@@renekkreg I wish that lens was usable at f1.8 on the EOS M but you gotta step it down to at least f2.8 to get a usable image - unless of course you are going for a funky blurry look
I can record RAW video on my phone. I get that’s not the same as a camera body that’s easy to attach lenses etc, but what’s the big deal about RAW video on a digital camera? Isn’t the big deal about ARRI cameras the colors from the sensor and it’s processing, not the fact that it captures RAW like plenty can?
How does the "upgraded" Eos M square off against the more modern competitors in a similar price range? i.e. if I have $ 300-400 to invest in a camera with video in mind, am I better off just getting an Eos M or an used recent camera (the usual names that come around in this range)? Also, wouldn't it be better to install Lantern on an Eos 5d mk ii/iii which seems to be a better camera overall? Thanks!
You have no camera that can shoot raw video until you get to 1300 bucks. The bmpcc4k. If you need raw video then there's nothing for cheap unless you want to count the original bmpcc, but that has a small sensor and even smaller battery (and some other issues). If you are lucky you may be able to get a gh4 for ~400 but those are kinda rare. I can't comment on the 5d since I've never used that The issue with this price range is there's very few good cameras below 700 dollars. Raw video on the EOS M is so killer (as it allows you to significantly change the colour and WB) that it beats out everything that doesn't have at least 13 bits of dynamic range, and a 10 bit codec. Which means you're looking at cameras well above 700 bucks. But that's just my personal opinion
@@SRFreneekitty it depends on the mode. If shooting at the default resolution 1736×1158 you can shoot as long as you have space and juice (storage and battery) The 5k anamorphic at full resolution is not very stable at for long recordings because the data rate is too high. The EOS M cannot handle anything above 65MBps (the card reader and CPU get overwhelmed and recording stops) without issues. Sometimes you'll be able to record for hours. Other times the recording will stop after a few seconds. Obviously there's a difference, if you shoot at 67MBps then the likelihoods of recording stopping is quite low. Above 71MBps you're very likely to be only able to shoot static shots or risk the recording stopping after the buffer is full. So yea for most modes you need to reduce bit depth from 14 bit to 10 or 12. And reduce the resolution if you wanna shoot for long
I have to admit I am dumping my EOS M and M2. I am an amateur and picked them up for a project that didn't make it to fruition. Given what modern cameras can do and post-processing software Magic Lantern for me just wasn't/isn't worth the headache. For those interested in the EOS M do keep in mind the lenses make a huge difference in the results you can get.

Good pair of vids, the Alexa is cool, while the eos-m seems to have less sharpness, idk, is it possible that it's the lens or mount? Personally I think the eos works very well with radioactive glass, like super takumar, some of the kodak ektars and nikons.. really helps the weak dynamic range imo.

I was jusy looking for a video like this a hours ago on your channel... So strange how that happens. I was also checking out the Arri 35. That thing looks dope. Apparently you can use their new revel color science with Alexa footage and you can change up the RAW so they look similar.
Why 1080p ! this is the worst mode M to compare with high end ! Why not some of 1:1 ? 200$ ? The price is also debatable and highly variable on ebay. What about duty and taxes(global view)?
I'm honestly surprised that the original M has made such kind of a comeback since it was originally trashed for having one of the most awful sensors, painfully slow software and substandard body Canon has ever made.
LOG is a different type of gamma curve intended to capture as much dynamic range as possible compared to the standard (stills) picture profile. It is baked into the footage. RAW on the other hand, rather than a baked in image, is just the data from the sensor. This allows for a greater degree of post production editing, like the ability to change the white balance in post. The best way to think about RAW video is RAW photos vs JPGs. They are very similar concepts. The only thing that RAW and LOG share in common are that they are both used for the same purpose to get as much dynamic range and as much freedom in post production as possible.
The main bonus of the 14bit ML compared to ARRI is that the EOS M can capture real blacks very similar to celluloid. That is what really makes the difference and also the unmached colors that the guys managed to pull off with the MLVApp. Even the newest ARRI 35 cannot capture the blacks like the EOS M which is really a pitty. Look closely on the comparison shots in the dark areas. You‘ll notice the difference.
Dude, in our modern, advanced society, slavery is dead. We don't go out to "capture real blacks" anymore. Leave that stuff in the dustbin of history where it belongs.
I used ML on 5DM3 years ago, and honestly the image was really good, but it was a bit buggy, unreliable, problem with dropping frames while recording to SD cards. Using other software to compile the CDNG. It was a pain so I just moved to black magic cameras. Miss the full frame sometimes, but if I was looking for budget full frame, with raw output, I’d probably consider the Sigma FP. In the end I think that Canon M, isn’t bad for someone that wants something cheap to play around with a bit, but for people that want to do more than that, the workflow will probably become a problem. Unless Magic lantern has improved that work flow aspect in the last 3 years, I haven’t kept up with it.
The Canon wins, when you consider the performance from something so cheap & compact. You would definitely expect image quality & features on something that costs $66k, to be superior.. but another thing is that the $66k doesn’t include the thousands more in “accessories”.. such as a monitor for seeing what you are shooting (cos you can’t be expecting them to include that, for ONLY $66k).
The developers are not making a living at creating hacked firmware overlays for any camera. So it's a matter of availability of the cameras to people doing this as a hobby or labor of love. Without a profit motive, or an incoming stream of cash or sacrificial hardware, they can't possibly buy every camera on the market you might want to use. Reverse engineering all the internals of these cameras takes skill and time that not many people have. This kind of thing is completely against the terms of service for using most cameras, and the manufacturers don't license or provide a developers kit to encourage this sort of thing. Some cameras have more complex internals than others. The relative simplicity of Canon's ASIC, and high availability is why ML seems to have builds for several Canon cameras and few for others. So if you are good at writing machine level code for undocumented ASICs I am sure the magic lantern team would be delighted to have fresh blood write overlays for many more cameras. If you can't do that, then maybe consider financial support for the magic lantern project, or donate your camera to them for analysis.
@@OriginalWatchcow lmao, it’s been done before, where the prosumer camera market wasn’t as big as it is now. There’s definitely a market for profitability in 2023. So oh though that was a nice & long comment you left…. I don’t even make money from the cameras I own and I would pay 2-300 for some dope firmware for my 2-3k cameras
Gotta step in for a moment. On the Arri for scratch audio, you could breakout that 5-pin into two 3-pin left and right yes? Tbh would only use it for that soooo I'm thinking single channel... and wasn't one of the holes in the side of the case for 12v? Could make that happen with a little work, I think.
i dont understand why you tell us the EOSM can rec in 5K but you make your comparaison in 1080p ? just comparing alexa 2k and EOSM 1080 cleary not the same render quality ...
Bro I like magic lantern, but the Eos M users are delusional. Magic lantern is only beautiful on 2 cams, 5dmk2 and mk3 but to be honest the Alexa is on another planet image wise from all 3
You really messed up what could have been a far more insightful video, around what people consider as value and price in a video camera. In 2012, if Canon took the insides of the eos m, put it in an industrial case, added pro connectors and mounts they would have charged 30k for it. Oh, wait.. they kinda did.
i live in africa in ethiopia & i went to join a film industry first buy a camera and practis filmmaking but camera very It Became Precious If you help me
The Arri is superior in every way in terms of image quality, but he either doesn't know how to use the ML and eos M or deliberately took bad shots to make the difference seem even more drastic. The new ML Crop Mood gives very good footage and is much more stable and reliable in operation.
Well, i put Magic lantern on my 700D back then. Beside some nice features like zebras it got me not much because the camera was not powerfull enough to record raw footage. Basically what i am trying to say is that there is no way arround upgrading if you want big raw stuff.
@Ben Simo $350 is the lowest on buy it now price on ebay. Some biddings START at $200 but once people bid, it goes over $350. Still nowhere close to $200.

It's not really honest to show the Canon EOS M with the ARRI logo on it in the miniature. I get the point of the video, but again, is not really honest to suggest you will show a compact ARRI camera here
I think It's just a risky mod. You will probably over heat or broke your camera. The Canon eos m is made to shoot a max res of 1080p 30fps not 2.5k 24fps.
Dude ... why eos M??? 5dmk2 or 3 is much better at that. And costs also 200. Maybe a little more for mk3... eos M is a bad camera to begin with. 5d2 or 3 have were actualy at least profesional cameras that produce nice image. That would be a much better comparisson. Still. It is interesting to see the comparison :D
I went down the Eos M rabbit hole. Did the ML hack and got a bunch of standard and old film lenses. My conclusion, This camera with the ML hack is terrible (terrible is an understatement) 1. The rolling shutter is so slow that doing any camera movement is a non starter (So tripod or super steady hands only) 2. Buggy (NEVER TAKE THIS TO A PAID SHOOT) 3. In most modes you would be interested in the viewfinder is unusable 4. The video quality is terrible 5. Any iso over 200 is noisy (Over 500 is unusable) (Just becouse it says 5K does not mean it is.) Bottom line - Only get this to shoot short 1-3min clips for you to experiment with and get your feet wet using Raw video so later you can get something like a used Black magic production or cinema camera which is a $500 purchase. Sure it is cheap but if you value your time pass on this. - Rent a better camera to get your feet wet working with Raw cinema video) You will resell the eos M so fast it will be like a rental anyway.
Yeah, a ordinary iPhone beats both these in every spec. And you can even edit the movie on it. The technology advances since these cameras was made is totally astonishing!
I started to use Magic Lantern on canon 5d...some time after there was no reason to do it. Years past.. 2023 - someone on the youtube trying to make some claims that this is something ground braking and usefull. Stop it.
What the hell is this. ARRI wins hands down in every category - except the size and weight. Terrible comparison. Maybe compare it to another mirrorless camera. Sorry it took you months and months. Sometimes the video production isn't worth it.

Sample video?
Video editors don't want your 4K footage.
Reformat it to 1080p and then you can send it to me.
i dont understand why you tell us the EOSM can rec in 5K but you make your comparaison in 1080p ?
just comparing alexa 2k and EOSM 1080 cleary not the same render quality ...
Can somone give me a link pls?
Bottom line: while raw video out of a cheap mirrorless sounds tempting, it’s just not worth it.
Oh, wait.. they kinda did.
i live in africa in ethiopia & i went to join a film industry first buy a camera and practis filmmaking but camera very It Became Precious If you help me
is it real 5k tho?
I bet this guy argued with himself
Eos M berapa itu?
I might get a camera in the future
2.5k looks so much better on the EOS-M. The sharpness makes the EOS-M look bad in this video.
Same - I just used ML for the cleaner interface, peaking/zebras etc. Ended up buying the 1st gen BMPCC once it came out.
On 700D you can record continuous raw. Maybe it was a card problem.
Arri Alexa Fanboy
$200? The camera on Amazon says $449?
He did say you have to do searching
@@childishgambinaa I've searched and never found anything even close to $200. This is clickbait.
@@adrian.bailey There are plenty of EOS M cameras available for $200 to $250 on eBay.
@@adrian.bailey you need to migrate to eBay
@Ben Simo $350 is the lowest on buy it now price on ebay. Some biddings START at $200 but once people bid, it goes over $350. Still nowhere close to $200.
Great channel. Subscribed
Thanks for making this great video. Appreciate your dedication. 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it!
Why don't they use raw hacks for other cameras
God how useful this video is!!! thanks Man, I watched whole video and I found that I knew about camera. please make more useful contents like this about alphabetic expressions of photography and Video camera. thanks a lot, subscribed
It's not really honest to show the Canon EOS M with the ARRI logo on it in the miniature. I get the point of the video, but again, is not really honest to suggest you will show a compact ARRI camera here
Brah you could used a bmpcc 1st gen at least this isnt fair fight
Cool Video !
I think It's just a risky mod. You will probably over heat or broke your camera. The Canon eos m is made to shoot a max res of 1080p 30fps not 2.5k 24fps.
great video!
Dude ... why eos M??? 5dmk2 or 3 is much better at that. And costs also 200. Maybe a little more for mk3... eos M is a bad camera to begin with. 5d2 or 3 have were actualy at least profesional cameras that produce nice image. That would be a much better comparisson.
Still. It is interesting to see the comparison :D
Magic lattern also break your shot..
So if you want to know more, you need to watch 7 more videos. Got it
What did you expect.
I went down the Eos M rabbit hole. Did the ML hack and got a bunch of standard and old film lenses.
My conclusion,
This camera with the ML hack is terrible (terrible is an understatement)
1. The rolling shutter is so slow that doing any camera movement is a non starter (So tripod or super steady hands only)
2. Buggy (NEVER TAKE THIS TO A PAID SHOOT)
3. In most modes you would be interested in the viewfinder is unusable
4. The video quality is terrible
5. Any iso over 200 is noisy (Over 500 is unusable)
(Just becouse it says 5K does not mean it is.)
Bottom line - Only get this to shoot short 1-3min clips for you to experiment with and get your feet wet using Raw video so later you can get something like a used Black magic production or cinema camera which is a $500 purchase.
Sure it is cheap but if you value your time pass on this.
- Rent a better camera to get your feet wet working with Raw cinema video) You will resell the eos M so fast it will be like a rental anyway.
I ended up finding an EOS M for about 60 dollars on KEH. Worth it.
How?
What’s “keh” ?
The Canon looks appallingly bad, why even make the comparison?
$274 - NOT $200, AND NO LENS - wtf... clickbait. disliked.
excellent
This is an unfair comparison
Yeah, a ordinary iPhone beats both these in every spec. And you can even edit the movie on it. The technology advances since these cameras was made is totally astonishing!
Lol
I started to use Magic Lantern on canon 5d...some time after there was no reason to do it. Years past.. 2023 - someone on the youtube trying to make some claims that this is something ground braking and usefull. Stop it.
Cool
Click bait. Don’t waste your time.
What the hell is this. ARRI wins hands down in every category - except the size and weight. Terrible comparison. Maybe compare it to another mirrorless camera. Sorry it took you months and months. Sometimes the video production isn't worth it.
Dude the EOS-M footage looks like complete trash.
