Exactly my reactions! I did see the previous version, which was more like a romance and definitely older TV quality. THIS had me riveted, excited, enthralled and blown away from the opening scenes, and It still is just like that. You nailed it with the facial expressions, as just an example of every other aspect being sheer perfection. Producer Hiroyuki Sanada searched out the very best of everyone he had ever worked with and had them give their best in their field to this lavish production, and it shows. This will teach the rest how it's done!!

The 80s show was groundbreaking for its time. It also was great. Yes, this adaptation is more in spirit with the overall scope of the novel. This adaption is a revelation.
In my opinion the 1980 series was beautiful for what it was trying to accomplish.

Don't bother with the 80s version take it from an 80s kid it was terrible.

Thanks for the letting me know. I think after watching this series, watching the 1980 one will just be hard to get through.
