Rodriguez is a Spaniard. When he is speaking English in the show, he is speaking Spanish. He is a pilot for the Portuguese. When the Portuguese are speaking to each other, and to Mariko, they are essentially speaking Portuguese. Blackthorne is based on real life person William Adams who knew at least 5 languages before he landed in Japan. he was an englishman who was a pilot for a dutch ship. He knew English, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish and Latin.
This show is more accurate with the little things and some big things than the book. Some of the names in the book were modern Japanese and now in the series... its more like the 1600s. Its during the Elizabethan Era for example. Just 1 detail they wanted to get right. They dug deep to get it right. Even the way the women walked, and held their Kimonos. Amazing details
To help understand the characters of Mariko’s background is based on taking from the real historical character Hosokawa Garacia . It’s important to understand how Tokugawa (the real Shougun’s name instead of Toranaga, the film fictional name ) raised from the competition of the waring period (Sengoku Period) back in 1467. She is a daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide who killed (Assassinated) the Oda Nobubaga one of the strongest (to-be Shogun and Nobunaga was the boss of Taiko Toyotomi Hideyoshi). en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosokawa_Gracia I wish the film (the book) should use the real historical names so that people of non-Japanese could understand this particular epic feature film much easier. Every Japanese knows about the Three Greatest War Lords: 1) Oda Nobunaga, 2) Taiko Toyotomi Hideyoshi and 3) Tokugawa Iyeyasu (Tokugawa Iyeyasu wins in the end who plays Toranaga in the film, main Character). Ishida Mitsunari (Film name Ishido) is the top retainer of Taiko Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The episode 1 starts from the death of Taiko.
Great discussion as always! Any chance all three of you could occasionally do a pod together? I definitely miss the OG days of Ross, Veronica, and Barrett banter
It was kinda gutsy for the courtesan to stop the "perv" from leaving. But I think she figured out that Yabu would be into voyeurism. Cuz of his pseudo-intellectual enjoyment of the guy getting boiled alive.
@@coquinegra Is the book Kiku a recurring character? And why do you say it's not the book Kiku? Cuz some of the women have pretty interesting roles in this series. This new series' courtesan would definitely spice things up anytime she shows up. And not just for sex.
Kimonos are generally expensive due to the silk textile quality. However, if you live in a warmer/hotter climate you might prefer a yukata (summer kimono, very breathable and MUCH cheaper) or a jinbei (a type of shorts with separate top, casualwear usually for men and drinking beer).
I really want to see more of Tamayoshi cuz Toranaga digs the idea that he stood up for him. And by having Tanayoshi kill his own baby demonstrates his complete loyalty. While also demonstrating to the rest of the council the kind of undying devotion Torananga has over his men. So I think we're going to see that loyalty tested over and over again.
the shows great, but you really want to read this book , and i know people say that all the time , but this show is staying fairly faithful to the book so far , ok some big changes but they make sense as an adaption, but your missing all the background all the context theres a lot of depth and richness that just cant be done in a TV show
But also scenes like the Japanese ship caught in the storm is hard to depict with words. That was done so well in this show. Or just how magnificent Osaka looked when Blackthorne got to see the city for the very first time.
Blackthorn is not a pirate , hes a PILOT ;) like a navigator but these guys were not sailing with maps they had things called rutters books of sailing notes and descriptions. council scene Ishido is the most powerful of those 4, hes also made deals with them, his plan here was to provoke an attack by Toranaga's man , as if a man of Toranaga's killed him there all 4 clans would gang up and kill Toranaga. the guy offering to commit suicide nearly got the entire clan killed , in the book he asks to be allowed to kill himself, thats denied and he gets crucified among the rapists and thieves. and thats a kindness, the believe is that only facing a truly hard death and doing it with composure can make up for such a transgression, hes letting the man atone.
One of my favorite books ever (the following Tai-pan is #1) the series is doing a very faithful job its great. Great breakdown im glad you guys are watching it. One thing im curious about is the book author always used old english when the characters were meant to be speaking latin. It had a really cool effect i thought was clever. The reason they need to speak Latin hasnt happened yet no spoilers 😎
They should do The Hunt for Red October thing, as in like when the Japanese are talking to each other we hear it as English.. Only use subtitles when characters are speaking different languages in the scene...
The emotional guy was going to commit seppoku AFTER killing his son. That would end his family name since the family followed the males. His widow could live and remarry because more kids would follow the family name of her new husband.

I'm old, so I loved the original book, the original show, and love, love, love the current new show! Glad you guys are reviewing this show!
Happy to have you watching with us!
I think all the English in this show (besides between the English sailors) is Portuguese
Ohhhhh you know what I think you’re right

in the original and in the book, that was Kiku. But somehow I don't think that was Kiku.

@@coquinegra That was def Kiku she was fine as hell
Once you get used to reading subtitles, your brain adjusts and you will stop even thinking about it, just takes a bit of time. Great Show so far.
Damn no samurai helmets😢, i am a sad wook. I expect full kabuki makeup next episode.
The problem is in Japan its hard to distinguish between the words Pilot and Pirate...
Great show so far

He's both. He's the navigator but they're all pirates/privateers. They were sent to find Japan and destroy Catholic bases.
That man pirating so he’s a pirate

I think that’s what they’re doing with Portuguese but we hear English maybe?
March 11th is a Monday so maybe they are moving the air date to Mondays??
30:55 “Core-tease-zhen” lol
Aka
Court-eh-zhan
Can't believe u guys didn't mention Mariko is the lead from Monarch...
Ishido is her dad in monarch as well
you guys should watch the original or read the book.
Yall gotta get some swords.
Badly need a pair of katanas
Man i had to keep rewinding and rewatching, those subtitles were too fast for me lol..
It was a lot to take in haha
We got a fellow colt fan on the show?!?

They didn't let Blackthorne climb down the cliff because Toronada requested his presence. They couldn't let Blackthorne risk his life.
i thought it was two women for the majority of that scene too ross you're not alone haha
I was like oh let’s ride
