Just adopted a four year old rescued female whippet. She is so charming and quiet. A total velcro dog. The only racing I've seen is to beat me back to my chair. Lol. Loves to cuddle and car rides. She usually only barks to tell me it's her walk/run time. Only 6 weeks and I'm in love and wishing for another.

Love the breed. We've had 5. Don't forget to consider rescuing a senior. Senior whippets are outstanding companions, and occasionally breeders have older whippets that need homes. Also, Whippet Rescue and Placement is the national organization to contact if you're interested. Whippet puppies are like living with a crazy squirrel, but they will sure steal your heart.

Iva Kimmelman My mom and dad had a whippet when I was born. He was my first best friend and lived to be 17 years old. I think my love of animals stemmed because of him. He was the most loving creature and was always there when I was sad or upset. I am 42 and still miss him. Thank you loving and keeping this breed going!

I ended up w a Whippet/ Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. Total accident! She’s a rescue, was a fat wrinkled pup and I fell in love. I couldn’t figure out why she was so busy. She played for hours. Literally, hours. Non-stop. That’s the ridgeback I think. I started taking her to the park. She was keeping up w the greyhounds. That’s the whippet. Except they stopped running after a bit and chilled. She ran for about 3 hours straight, 7 days a week until she was 3 years old. (More ridgeback features) She’s 5 now and can run for an hour without breaks, but will stop for about 15 minutes in between. She’s still happy with the 3 hour window. Kinda funny looking: long body, long neck, very lean. But her muscles are thick and heavy. She has a little peanut head. Her feet are HUGE! Really outsized for her body, but she runs flat out over any terrain like it’s grass. And if she hits you while running, it’s a total wipeout. If I had known what I was getting into.....but I love my girl.💕

We pick up our Whippet puppy on Sunday this week! We have been chosen by the breeder to co own a show puppy. We feel honored she asked us and I have co owned a show dog before though not a Whippet. We chose this breed for all the reasons you listed. I am in love with Irish Wolfhounds too but, I wanted a breed that is longer lived this time around having had a Great Dane in the past, I wasn't sure I am at this time anyway ready for the health issues and the short life span. We're very excited to go on this new journey with our new puppy and can't wait to start training. Our plan is to start with this puppy and add a second Whippet later on. We're in Canada so I imagine my dog clothing bill will be significant.

I have whippet mix and she’s great. The temperament you can’t beat it, always a sweet innocent looking face inside, then a playful rocket at the dog park not timid. And she never barks. She def chases chihuahuas and little dogs at the park until they hide under their owners legs tho. I recommend a mix because she is more furry and not so skinny.

You're opinion and may I say theory on whippets history is way out , whippets do have a lot of greyhound genetics even more so nowadays however they started off as ratting and rabbiting dogs terrier blood being a big part of there makeup , we may agree to disagree on the fact that whippets are a brilliant Breedon k9

Yes Liam. Well done . I have had 3 Whippets and have one currently. I think your very accurate with what you say, except I find with exercise 30 min walk a day is and was enough to keep my guy and girls content. I do try to give him a morning and a night walk for up to 1 hr. If its wet and cold and I don’t walk him then he will get restless in the early eve, an start throghing a chew or ball around an catching it for 15 to 20 min. Lovely guy comes every where with me work, holidays love him dearly

Whippets do not originate from the middle east or Africa. They were first created in England by crossing a sighthound with some variant of English Terrier. DNA studies show they aren't just small Greyhounds.

Standard poodle review. Tall, skinny dog. Picky eater. Velcro for sure privacy is overrated after all. Can have food sensitivity. Can be hyper but goes with the flow by extremely hyper as puppies. Want to be with the family at all times. Great with other pets and kids. Smart dog which in my case can mean stubborn because ours likes to think when told what to do. Goofy, silly hysterical, funny. Great family dog. Think I cover everything.

All whippet owners can support all your opinions on this fascinating breed. I think the whippet will tolerate up to half an hour of intense activity per day, e.g. running for frisby. His biggest drawback is his tendency to chase everything that moves quickly, including cars, and susceptibility to kidney problems if his body was cooled too much

If the pregnancy goes as expected, I should be bringing home a Whippet puppy this July (it will be born in May). I'm very, very excited. I'm happy to know about the special collar needs. I've always had German Shepherds in the past, and everyone I had loved their collar, and would get excited about putting it back on after getting a bath, so I'm expecting the whippet will also become attached to its collar.

Have a Whippet-Husky mix. She's a sweetheart. Acts and looks very much like a Whippet, except she loves the snow. Very friendly and very social -- absolutely has to meet every person she sees and loves to play endlessly with other dogs (even well after the other dog has had enough). But we can't let her play alone with kids outdoors. I don't know if it's that she's *too* playful or what, but she starts trying to wrestle the kids to the ground and when riled up like that is not careful enough with her teeth. She's having fun, but the kids are crying. Also chases joggers and tries to play with them -- a bit too rough. Maybe she'll chill out when she gets older.

Ok whippets, If they see a deer they will be gone. More chance they injure themselves because of their speed, shape and fur type. Apart from that fantastic dogs! They are lazy also, 1 walk a day is fine. They house train easily also. Unless you live in the artic or something like that, a coat in winter and when rainning is fine for keeping them warm. They do like to be under a blanket on cosy evenings or in bed with you.

The greyhound is the fastest dog, saluki is number two, and they can run faster and further faster than a whippet. Whippets are the fastest accelerating dogs though and would beat a greyhound over 50 yards, they can also jink and turn much quicker than larger sigjthounds, perfect for catching rabbits.

You shouldn’t get your facts from Wikipedia! Anybody can post stuff (lies) on there. Whippets originate from Egypt, they were lap dogs for the wealthy. Look at breed history websites other than Wikipedia.
