Brittanys are so underrated as companions. They're very popular as hunting dogs, but not as popular as I think they should be as companions. They're healthier than most other more popular dogs, they're friendly but not too needy, they're trainable and versatile, and they're very gentle. They're main issue I find with them is recall. They're very curious dogs, and I find mine tends to wander. And recall for them is very important because they are very fast and agile and when they start running it's hard to get them to stop, especially since they also have great endurance. So get them well trained, they aren't hard to trained but it has to be consistent.
@@tayw8316 they are bread for majority hunting. Loud noise are expected when it comes to that line of work for them. That will gradually improve to them just plain ole not caring then it would progress in the aspect of shotguns introduced into training. Starting far away gradually getting closer and mixing in commands. Time consuming but an enjoyable bond with them.
I had a Britt for 14.5 years. He was my best friend and turned out to be way more than I ever hoped for after a very challenging normal Brittany puppyhood that lasted 1.5 yrs. They are the best. I miss him every day. RIP Owen. ❤️
My first dog growing up was a Britney. I miss her a lot. She passed at 17 years old. She was an extremely loyal family dog. She would follow us onto the school bus a few times, and would be slightly aggressive towards strangers. In her old age we would have to make sure she stayed in the garage because she would follow my dad all over the property and in the summer the heat would make her pass out and she refused not to follow. They're a fantastic family dog.
LOL...this video is sooo cool. Love his connection with you from the jump. Hilarious at about 7:33 when he buried his face behind his paws to apparently take a snooze as you were finishing your presentation. Gorgeous Brittany and awesome presentation. Thanks for sharing!
My boy was the sweetest, most sensitive pup. It’s been a little over a year since we lost him in an accident and I still think about him every single day. Rest In Peace Murph dog ❤️
Damn I literally just subbed like 20 mins ago and you already drop a new vid. Keep these up man I really like these breed reviews. You should do one on Rottweilers.
Love your reviews! My family is on our second Brittany and we love them. Totally right about needing to get them off leash and running; neither of our boys have ever even tried to walk nicely on the leash unless they're literally too tired to walk faster than us.
My boy max passed away almost a year ago and he was the best dog that I will probably ever own. He was one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever met and had such empathy. He would sit with me through panic attacks and refuse to leave my dads side through chemo. He was 15 when he passed and so rambunctious even to his last week.
They are the nicest dogs my Boykin spaniel puppy will pull and bite at Brittanys ears and she does nothing. I think they are the best hunters and best family dogs anyone can get
I've had my brittany for a little over a year now and he has been the most hectic dog I've ever had. He has already had more then 3 major vet appointments because he eats everything. But other then all of that his the best. Also one of the friendlyest dog's I've had
Great review!I really like this channel. It’s strange how you aren’t way more popular. Next I would like to see a review on a chow chow or Akita if possible. Keep up the great work😀
I have 2 currently and have had 4 total I love this breed. All of my dogs are and have been off leash trained. It makes them so much more enjoyable and yes I take them off leash in the park or on trails. My first one was a true hunting dog and then I had kids. The rest of them have been pets with agility training and obedience they go with me everywhere. They are super loyal and love to please.
We've just got our 6th Brittany a couple weeks ago. Had them for around 30 years and have them living as pairs for the most part. Very friendly and loyal dogs and can run forever. Training is quite easy but needs to be consistent. The pup who's 8 weeks old and we've had for a week already sits and responds to his name.............most the time! Oh and Brittany Spaniel is still the name we use here in the UK.
I highly recommend Brittanys. I had two and they were such a joy. Make sure they do get excursive though because my girl was an escape artist and my neighbors knew where to drop them off if they saw that they'd gotten out. They love to explore and are very curious.
The akc in 1982 dropped the spaniel from the name. The US and Canada are the only places that dropped the spaniel. Every where in the world still call them brittany spaniel. Épagneul Breton which is the original name translated into English as brittany spaniel. They were bred from local spaniels in France with English setters and pointers.
Yes, Lucy, I call them Brittany Spaniels too. The French call them "Epagneul," and the French and Bretons are the ultimate authorities on what the breed should be called, non? When I got my first one, people asked me what kind of dog it was, and when I said "Brittany," the response was usually "No, not the name. What is the breed?" So I started to answer the question "Brittany, but they used to be called Brittany Spaniels, and the AKC in 1962... etc., etc." Then I realized that no one wanted all that info, so I now say "Brittany Spaniels," and they say "Oh. Like a Cocker Spaniel," And to save time I reply "Yep, just like a Cocker Spaniel." I disagree with Liam here about the looks--they do have a Spaniel appearance and have English Springer (or Welsh Springer, according to some) in their family tree.
They're just Brittanies in Australia. Also they were not "bred from local spaniels in France with English setters and pointers", that is a complete myth. They are direct descendants of the Dutch national dog, the Kooikerhondje.
@@davidbarry994 You are incorrect. Brittanys were developed in Brittany, a province in northwest France, between the 17th and 19th centuries, becoming officially recognized early in the 20th. The energetic Brittany is bred from French Spaniels and possibly English Pointers, Brittanys were prized for their versatility in the field, being able to do the work of up to four types of hunting dogs in one.
Hey Liam, I've really enjoyed your videos! I appreciate that you're very up front about each breed's characteristics/demands while also making it entertaining! I'm actually looking at getting a Brittany myself in the near future. Is there any chance that you could do a video about Redbone Coonhounds? I've found some basic info online in other videos and articles, but the info is very limited. I think it'd be a great addition for your channel! Keep up the great work!
Some misinformation here. Spaniel was dropped because Brittanys are pointers, Spaniels are flushing dogs. Spaniel was an error in translation from the original name, “Epagnuel” which means to lie flat in French. The dog in the video is an American Brittany. They’re slightly larger than French Brittanys and don’t cone in as many color combinations, but are descended from the French Brittany. Frenchies tend to be calmer and better family pets (I know some will disagree, but I’ve lived with both), but are still great hunters. They were bred by peasants in France for 100yrs to poach on wealthy estates. They wanted a small dog that hunted close and could get in/out of the estate undetected. Decades later they were brought to America and we “Americanized” the breed to hunt at wider range. They’re both great breeds, but I’ll always love the French Brittany because of the tricolors. Ours is now over 20yrs old and still kicking. Best family dog ever!
The energy of a specific Brittany depends heavily upon breeding/upbringing. I’ve had one Brittany that was bat-s%^t crazy while the other one is very tame. The crazy one was raised outside on a farm (with proper shelter of course); its parents were used for hunting. The calm one came from a show blood-line. I’m sure the sub-breed played a role as well, but probably much less. The crazy one was an American Brittany, while the calm one was the French variety.
I’ve had Brittanies for 54 years. Each one was precious to me as a companion. Several I raised from puppyhood and a few were rescue dogs. I’m 68 years now and miss having one. Maybe I can have one more.
I’ve had britts my whole life, (40 years). Same blood line, all pedigreed since the early 1940’s. They’re just wonderful dogs. I’ve had 3 liver and white and 6 orange. Great pheasant, quail and grouse dogs. I’ve had a few track deer for me as well. Your Britt is gorgeous btw.
I have a 4 year old Brittany, I love him. He is a great family dog, great with kids, and yes he needs his hour off the leash in the woods each morning. Rain, snow, lockdowns.... You will always meet me at 6:30 am with my coffee and my Brittany making his "circles" of 50-100m around me in the woods. Except in the winter, we have wild boars here and well... I do not feel like that I need that much adrenalin in the morning and in the dark. So we go into the fields in the winter. Also a very trainable dog, he never runs away, even if I do not see him, I know he is circling around me. We did get him a GPS tracker though, but that's just for our bike rides, he also runs without leash next to us (also in front and behind) and can get sidetracked with some smell.
my family had a brittany for 15 years. best family dog ever! definitely not super suited for life without a huge backyard though. the only way he kept his sanity (and our family’s, lol) is from us giving him a run or at least 2 thorough walks every day. every single day. for about 12 years, no joke. even as an old fart he still needed at least 1 solid walk a day. super sweet and loyal dog though. these dogs have a lot of personality and my pup gave us so much entertainment and good memories 💕💕
I have had Brittianys my whole life since I grew up hunting. They're awesome dogs. Super friendly, loving and attentive . They should be trained and exercised since they're energetic and active dogs by nature. The only slight negative I'd say is they're completely obsessed with hunting. If not properly focused or trained these dogs will follow their nose and you wont see them for hours.
Liam, you are so freakin' funny. You had my laughing at Brittany Spears and then at least 5 more times. I learned a lot, too. Is this your dog? Or do you borrow dogs for the videos?
lol 'if you're not getting yelled at by at least three people a day...' lol. I I have a tri color American Cocker and when I let him run off leash I get at last three people yelling at me - thinking he is a Rottweiler! Can you even imagine. For him, off leash exercise has made all the difference in terms of anxiety, etc.
Lol! Some People HATE dogs. I wish I could say I was mature enough not to F with em sometimes. But you’re so right getting them off leash in a more normal state (like not having a rope attached to their necks) ABSOLUTELY helps with anxiety. Leashes are useful in only a few situations like busy streets and such obv but out in the woods I’m like deal with with people.
For those of you who seem to be complaining about Liam's video in reference to the name of the dog, let's get it straight. The AKC dropped the named Spaniel. So you'll just have to get over it. Thanks for the video Liam. I've owned two Brittany dogs and just love them.
While not a Spaniel, prior to 1982 they were called Brittany Spaniel. So that name is still within people's memory. I still catch myself calling them that even though I owned one for 12 years.
Liam, where aaah ya from in Mass? I felt your energy was more than Ranger’s in the video. Grew up with two Brittanys trying to urge my wife and daughter to get on board for another for bird hunting. Fun, informative and entertaining review. Ranger was a good boy!
Brother I find your videos very informative and useful. We currently have a very gentle but protective pure black Labrador retriever Jessie. She’s 9 so we have lots of years yet we hope. Plenty of time for research your videos. Keep up the good work and the comedy. Is there a bully type bread similar in temperament and activity as my Jessie girl? Thanks
If you don’t give them enough exercise they can get a little...weird. 🤣.. accurately put. They have personality. Very friendly. Very smart breed. Grew up with two liver and whites and my dads current one has enough energy to power a state, he’d give a greyhound a run for his on speed. Always ready to go. A dog that is just happy at your side what ever you do and they will make you feel guilty if you leave them out of anything, they want included. Edit: Velcro dogs. Very protective of “their” children, if you have kids..if you think your kids are only yours after you get a Brit...you’re sadly mistaken.
This is such a good idea for a channel I wish I'd had it. Will you do sight hound reviews in the future? I think they're often underrated as pets and I'd love to hear what you think of greyhounds and such.
Hello, I'm a new viewer and subscriber! Thanks for the informative videos. You've done a lot of videos on hunting dogs and other high activity breeds. Could you review some low, medium activity dogs as well?
Liam, your speech brings me back to Rhode Island, where I was born, raised, educated, married, raised a family, worked, and trained dogs. I'm guessing you are from Massachusetts. How about it?
I love Brittany's they are so loving my dog sadie is very active she could play fetch with her ball 8 hours a day, she loves to play fetch....she is also very sensitive when she has to be corrected she will take off to the bedroom and hide under the bed at the least hint of being in trouble. but i highly recommend this breed and i agree they are very energetic!
It will always be the brittany spaniel to me. They are truly a multi trait dog though. Had one as a small child. Love them. My Brittany used to let himself out of the house all by himself. If we left the storm door open. Screen doors fences gates were no match for him. My area used to be pretty rural when I was a child. He would bring gifts to us when he was able to get out. Pheasant, rabbit, ducks, and other small game. He would flush them run them down and catch them
My dog looks exactly like your Brittany and my dog has problems with his ears and then my other one who is 10 months old digs a lot but they are both so sweet and I love them to death
Are these dogs good with cats? I was thinking about getting one after university but I adopted a stray kitten I found in my back alley, he's been through a lot and I wouldn't want to get a dog that would put him through more stress.
We had two Brittanys and now we have a Pomeranian.WE are thinking about getting a brother or sister for our Pom,and it might be a Brittany LOL.Once you have a Brittany, you will never forget it,I sure miss having one.Brittanys rule !!!
Thanks for the review. I have had GSPointers, and Weimaraners before, and now that they have passed on I am looking for my next companion. I have narrowed it down to the Viszla and the Brittany to keep up with my outdoors, hiking, camping, lifestyle. Have a house and a yard and will happily provide 1-2 hours of exercise a day. Thoughts or preferences over the two?
I have a Vizsla. Here is there stereotypical V. He's slightly neurotic with OCD tendencies, but he's also the sweetest velcro dog ever. You'll never pee alone again!
Our 4th Brittany is a Frenchie. Her amp goes to 11! Brittanies are hunting machines, and they will go for anything from Sparrows to Rhinos and they have no fear!
Got a rescue brittany, fully trained gun dog. Was shot in her front right shoulder. Bullet removed. Has a limp. She's either 2 or 3. Any advice peopke?
Loved your video. I've long considered this breed, so much that I love about them. I have a suburban home (the yard is not fenced). It's just me at home, and I love to walk/hike but I'm concerned about how much I'd be able to get the dog off-leash, etc. Do you "think" this breed might work for me?
I don’t know if you got one in the end! But they are just so meant for running off lead, hunting, covering insane amounts of ground for hours. In my family it would be an impossibility to keep one on the lead. They are also almost impossible to train to walk nicely on the lead (it’s a breed club running joke in my country and we have top gundog trainers in there).
@@evie9239 Haven't gotten one....or any other breed, my timeframe is this coming spring or summer. I totally appreciate your response, something I needed to hear. You've just confirmed what I was thinking. I love the dog for it's beauty, size/coat, etc.......but I'm probably not suited to giving it the free reign it would likely want and need. Still love them.....!
@@randytolen9531 I so hope you get to own one at a different time! They are stupidly nice companions but a massive lifestyle commitment. There’s something cult-like about the community of people who adore them… but finding the right breed is hard. @@evie9239 Thanks...I had a Parson Russell Terrier for 16 years that I lost 3 years ago. Didn't think I could do it again, broke my heart. Decided it's getting time and I'm considering several breeds. Things have a way of working out the way they are supposed to, so we'll see!
Walk mine for 2 hours (1 now she’s older) and runs like a relentless motor… and then she sleeps/cuddles all day. V clever, trainable and very empathetic. It’s like having another little human in the house. I’m in the UK- I’d never get a Brittany if I couldn’t let it off in the country to run for hours a day.

I love that he's talking about all of their energy and she's sleeping on the couch. I had three Brittanies. Love em to death
Maybe he took the dog for a long run and now he's tired.
Unfortunately he got most of this wrong... for example "liver" is not the same color as this dog, or the history of the use of "spaniel"

My Brittany who was a Champion show dog was amazing I really love this breed!
I subbed cause this is a good dog channel.....
And cause of the beard. Can or did you review the Old English sheep dog?
While not a Spaniel, prior to 1982 they were called Brittany Spaniel. So that name is still within people's memory. I still catch myself calling them that even though I owned one for 12 years.
What do you do for rescue Britt's with bad habits like bolting? Will training work?
Love the video. I grew up with these dogs.
everything Ranger did reminded me of my Britannys (RIP). Love the breed!
He knew you said his temperament wasn't a 5... he heard you say 4.2 and gave the camera the classic Brittany side-eye
They are often called Brittany Spaniels because until 1984 that's how the AKC referred to the breed before changing to just "Brittany ".
HI! great videos. Can you do one for Catahoula Leopard Dog? aim looking into getting one. Thank you
Liam, where aaah ya from in Mass? I felt your energy was more than Ranger’s in the video. Grew up with two Brittanys trying to urge my wife and daughter to get on board for another for bird hunting. Fun, informative and entertaining review. Ranger was a good boy!
We have a 10mo Dalmatian puppy, also a very active breed. Do you think he would be compatible with a Brittany brother?
Mine is soooo sweet with kids. If there’s a tiny person at the park he stops playing with the dogs and hangs out with them. Melts my heart.
Completely agree my dog is on my hip 24/7 and always ready to go. Love him to death.
¨ Like the mail man ¨ 😂 pretty much
Would you recommend this breed as a long distance trail running buddy?
"Just a brittany" I felt that
Great channel! Could you do an Irish wolfhound?
This is such a good idea for a channel I wish I'd had it. Will you do sight hound reviews in the future? I think they're often underrated as pets and I'd love to hear what you think of greyhounds and such.
We're on our second greyhound and they make wonderful pets. This one now lives with an ESS and a Brittany and he thinks he's a spaniel now!
Lol...you always make me laugh😁
The best dogs 🐶 to have ❤️
Can you do a review of the welsh springer Spaniel? It’s so hard to find anything on them
“People who are psychopaths and wanna run” 😂🤣😂
is it possible to pad train them from a pup to an adult so we dont have to take them outside to use the bathroom
Are these dogs good with cats? I was thinking about getting one after university but I adopted a stray kitten I found in my back alley, he's been through a lot and I wouldn't want to get a dog that would put him through more stress.
Towards the end of the video, Ranger was like uhhhh It's sleep time 🤣
I have French Brittany and he is the best! It's my first one, and definitely going to get an other.
Amazing explanation! Spent most of the video laughing
Yes ours is a weird combination of super cute mellow and super hyper lol
thank you very much for making this video. does anyone know if this breed is a big barker. i’m an active person but also live in an apartment. thanks
Can you do a review for the airedale? Thanks!
We had two Brittanys and now we have a Pomeranian.WE are thinking about getting a brother or sister for our Pom,and it might be a Brittany LOL.Once you have a Brittany, you will never forget it,I sure miss having one.Brittanys rule !!!
do brittanys make good service dogs?
Irrationally angry 😂 loved your review man!
I have a Brittany, and she's an excellent camping and hiking partner
I have a Vizsla. Here is there stereotypical V. He's slightly neurotic with OCD tendencies, but he's also the sweetest velcro dog ever. You'll never pee alone again!
Good reviews! Thanks!
Our 4th Brittany is a Frenchie. Her amp goes to 11! Brittanies are hunting machines, and they will go for anything from Sparrows to Rhinos and they have no fear!
How are they with cats and smaller dogs?
Does anyone how popular the Brittany breed is in the UK ?
Many thanks and great videos.
Brittany’s are amazing. My Brittany is 5 years old and he’s so sweet.
My family is going to get a Brittany in September and I’m so excited! We’re going to name her June.
Got a rescue brittany, fully trained gun dog. Was shot in her front right shoulder. Bullet removed. Has a limp. She's either 2 or 3. Any advice peopke?
The Boston accent🤌🏽 music to my Bostonian ears 😂😊
I’m a dog breed geek and I found my 2 by total accident and not the breeds i had even considered! Hope you find yours soon.
My girlfriend bred Brittanys for 20 years. They are the most affectionate dog I ever saw. Hopefully we can one day begin breeding them.
In the horse community we call that color chestnut and it's a habit for me to use equine terms. 😂
I have a Brittany, she likes to bite sometimes when she wants something what should I do
Liver is brown black no?
These are very sweet dogs. Very pretty/handsome, too.
