If you are the right sort of human for a whippet, what you can expect is the most wonderful companion dog you could possibly imagine. They're just so wonderful.
Agree 100%, my Male Whippets are generally more affectionate and often become your shadow. The girls tend to be more independent and headstrong and like their own space a bit more.
Might I ask are you able to walk off leash with your Whippets on a trail in the woods when you are hiking or mountain biking without the fear of them bolting off in pursuit of some other animal? Thank you!
Love the video, but disagree about keeping them off the furniture lol We were able to successfully teach our littermate boys to stay off the furniture and only be allowed up if we give them a certain cue. We definitely have cuddle time on the furniture with them but they understand that they have to be invited up😊
Our old Whippet was so attached to my mother she would actually follow her to the toilet-she would sometimes follow me too! Lol and if that isn’t true love... I don’t know what is! Also, all your Whippets have such beautiful markings, the sweetest almond eyes, hehe and of course those adorable signature floppy rose ears. I’m always so amazed at the wide array of colours Whippets come in, and how they’re all so pretty no matter what their coat colour is... and yours are no exception. All of them look so elegant!
Thank you so much! ❤ Whippets are the best and they invest so much emotion (and sometimes drama) in everything they do. Everyone here follows my mom as well. She gets up to just grab her phone and literally the whole "herd" is after her LOL
''Lying in the sun until they are almost overheated''.. Most definitely. My son's Whippet used to sunbathe and in Winter lie in front of the stove until his body felt hot to touch.. ''Heat Seeking Missiles'' for sure.
This was very helpful even though I don't have a whippet but the insights apply well to my 6 year old female lurcher. Sweet natured, sensitive but moody and stubborn too. I should also mention the range of sounds made by my furry friend; huge vocal range!
Omg, this video is so informative, thank you!! We adopted a "Labrador mix", which we actually think she is a Whippador, (whippet+Labrador mix), and everything this video makes so much sense!!! Oh my heck, I wish I would have seen this sooner, lol! Thank you so so much for this video!!! 💜🙏
Excellent talk. I am considering a whippet as my first dog and I like what you are saying. This seems like a good breed for me. You said they like to be with other whippets, but I only plan to have one, so will they get lonely? Also, which is a better choice for a first time owner, a puppy from a breeder or a rescue from a shelter?
Hi Adriana, i love your attitude to your dogs using the house like it's their own. My whippet is allowed to go anywhere to sleep. If he's on the couch i don't move him, i sit somewhere else! My whippets best friend is my little terrier. They mix very well and go everywhere and do everything together. Have you had any other breeds with your whippets?
Thank you! Sounds like you have a well spoiled whippet, that's the way it should be! And by the way, I hear more often that terrier and whippets live perfectly well together! I've had a Golden retriever and Newfoundland together with 5 whippets.
Your darker Fawn Particolour looks so devoted. His expression is so sweet. Re ''Socialisation''...So agree, took both ours out {Being carried initially before vaccines} and showed them as much as possible. Both were fearless as adults. ..With the new puppy, we will do the same thing. {A female, not a Boy...All the boys went first on the breeder's waiting list.}
I really enjoyed watching your video and listening to your beautiful accent and your fluency in English. I have no dogs but I do adore Whippets, and so when I saw you and you, wanted to tell me all about this breed, I was putty in your hands sweetie. : - ) Thanks for starting my day so glamourously and so knowledgeably. I wish you rainbows.
Thank you so much Adriana! I love your videos, this one was especially informative. Whippets are my absolute favourite dog breed. I love them with all my heart. From looks to characteristics and demeanor, they have it all. I do not have a whippet myself but I am very seriously planning to get one in the near future. So You're video's help me a lot! I feel like you are the only one that is making consistent video's about whippets. I wish we where friends so I could come and meet you and the lovely dogs!:) Much love, Kim
Thank you so very much for your kind words! ❤ I am very glad the videos are helpful! I hope you get your whippet puppy soon and when you do, please let me know. 🤗
@@ShowPaws It may take a year before it is my turn on the waiting list but i will let you know! And as long as you keep making video's I will be here watching and supporting you!:)
Hi Adriana, I rarely comment videos but I had to tell you how pleased and happy I am to see (at least !) such a perfect presentation of what a Whippet truly is :) Your videos are just so full of knowledge and love, a sight for sore eyes ! I lived with sighthounds for more than 10 years now (totally in love) and actually 2 whippets share my life for my greatest happiness (and theirs I hope). They're both adopted (like almost all my dogs were) because I love to give a home to adults. I love to work with them in order to give them back confidence and happiness. I usually don't like breeders very much, but you are the type of breeder that I so would like to see more... Love, knowledge and respect for the breed and your dogs are in all your words. So thank you.. One thing I'd like to add about the female's minds. I find them independant too, but also more reflexive (like in all the breeds I had). I must say I really love both gender :) Thanks again, a lot, for your videos !
Literally laughing a this!..My son's Whippet slept in his bed always, and son said Tiny would overheat, get out, pant for a few minutes, then climb back in.. {Duvets make this much easier}
Everyone keeps saying that you can't keep whippets off furniture but I have a 6 month old whippet puppy who will listen to me and not go on furniture when I'm home. Of course when I go out he will always jump on the sofa chew on my clothes and cry but that's understandable with a 6 month old puppy. Also I'm not going to keep him off the furniture forever I just want him to learn to respect boundaries.
Hi, I would get an old comfy chair just for your whippet with a blanket. You can soon train the whippet to use only that chair and it will keep it from your best furniture. Whippets are not well padded so don,t like lying on the floors. I miss my whippet and wish you the best with your puppy. Whippets are a joy :)
My parents used to chop and change between allowing our two whippets on or off the beds. One time, my parents were going out and as soon as they had shut the door, both boys darted to their room and like cheeky children all excited jumped, rolled and rubbed themselves all over the bed. 😂
Lol @ the differences between males and female whippets. So true. My boy loves a cuddle any time. Give him any encouragement and he will do the standup on his hind legs - put his paws on your shoulders - ,"I love you" stretch. My girl loves a cuddle when it suits her and if you don't read her mind and give her a cuddle when she is feeling like it suits her, she will let you know about it. Lol They are amazing dogs
So glad to hear you also have rats. I plan to get a whippet soon and have 5 rats. I wasn’t terribly worried since they have a very good cage and I always supervise their play time, but it’s nice to hear you haven’t had any problems! I’d love to see an update if you do try to have interactions between them.
I will make a video on how my whippets act around small animals (in this case - Rats), but you have nothing to worry about. At the beginning the whippet might be very interested in the rats, but they will quickly settle with a "look but no touch" behavior.
my whippet is allowed on the love seat but not the couch. She knows the difference, the love seat is now hers and I need to ask if i can sit with her. Also if you have a whippet be prepared for people telling you to feed your dog, cause its clearly not feed enough.
Aww beautiful whippets :) I have four girls whippets wouldn’t be with out them there amazing and the best dogs I’ve ever had, everything in your video is so true I have this with my four, one day I’ll love to get more whippets ♥️🐾🐾🐾🐾
Could you make a video about how to train and raise a whippet puppy? Any specific differences between raising another breed? Any tips and tricks when it comes to having a whippet as your first dog?
Ignore and redirect is a good approach, in my experience. Mouthing is normal for puppies, that's how they explore the world. When they bite - ignore them, if they continue - walk away and show them that biting doesn't give them any desired outcome such as you playing with them or giving them attention. Once they've stopped, reward by offering to play with a toy instead. Just be patient, persistent and don't scold them. They will grow out of it sooner than you'd think and with the right approach.
Hi! Thank you for giving us so many information. I never have had a dog before so I apologise for the silly questions. Do I need to brush teeth to a whippet? How often do they need a bath? When they go to the toilet they need to be extra cleaned?
Hi there! Your questions are not silly, thank you for asking! We never brush the teeth, you can give plenty of chew toys, safe chews (no rawhide) or large bones, so that they can keep their teeth clean. They are very clean dogs, they do not smell and unless they get very dirty and muddy from playing outside, you do not need to give them a bath. When they go to the bathroom they do not need to be cleaned either, unless for some reason they get dirty (like Brady who covers his front leg when he marks sometimes LOL). I hope that helped! 🤗
I use a product called Beaphur Dog Tooth Gel with my dogs. Its an algae based gel that only needs spreading around the teeth and gums. It works by not allowing tartar build up. I had one Afgan/Whippet /Borsoi live to 18 years old and he had perfect white teeth when he passed away. When he got old he couldn't be bothered to chew his bones so this was a god send. Raw cold carrots when they're teething are great too. They seem to love them and all my dogs have continued to eat them their whole lives. Healthy treat! Natural too.
ahaha I love the part you mentioned about female whippets being moody that's my Dallas she wants to set all her own rules, and she 100% gets moody when I tell her "No" I love her no less even in her moody state. She's the best dog ever, I wish I could get another one but my partner had a french bulldog when we met so we like totally different types of dogs. Dallas doesn't mind Bruno the french bulldog but I'm sure she would love a whippet to cuddle and run with (hopefully one day).
Hi Adriana..I really enjoy your videos.. very informative and knowledgeable. I would love to hear your thoughts on bringing a whippet puppy home for the first time.. what to expect and how to help it feel loved and settled? xxxxxxx
Thank you so much, Karen! I am glad the videos are helpful. I will film a video soon explaining the specifics on bringing a whippet puppy home and all the specifics and challenges. 🤗
I rescued a puppy and we believe she is a whippet mix with fox terrier ir pure whippet. But she was a white cost and black spots and patches or whippet border collie or dalmatian mix one of those haha
Hi will a whippet just jump into the lead if he sees a rabbit? I want to ride my bike along with a whippet but i'm scared he would make me crash all of a sudden. Thank you for your help :)
Hi Luna! Yes, most probably they will. Most whippets enter a crazy mode once they see wild bunnies. So my advise is to either avoid areas where there are possibly rabbits, or to hop off the bike and walk through specific areas, so that you have more control and stay safe. In any case, it would be great if you can find a way to make it work, as bike rides are great for exercising and conditioning dogs 😊
My partner and I have a big lazy but very puppy like 6 year old rescue greyhound! We’re actually looking at getting a whippet as company for our greyhound once we move with how similar they seem to be to greys! 😁
Sure, ours love going on long hikes and it's one of their favorite activities. As long as the terrain allows it, so nothing too steep or rocky that could be uncomfortable for their feet.
I have a very lazy, very indoor big tabby cat who isn't very active and kinda just lounges everywhere. I really want to get a whippet one day, but I also want to make sure they're compatible with my baby girl too. I see that its important to introduce them when the whippet is a puppy but if I can't get my hands on a puppy, is it possible to train an adult whippet to not like.. attack my cat? lol! I have never owned my own dog before, grew up with one though. And I want to make sure I'm prepared
Please could you tell me more about the bond, affection between Whippet (especially female) and Owner? I planning to get Whippet and wondering are Whippets more like cats or like Shepherd (for example) regarding the bond, loyalty with Owner? Thank you for the great video.
Hi there! Thank you for your kind words! Whippets are very attached to their people and like to be involved in everything their human does. However, they are independent and they are not willing to "work" for you like shepherds do. The bond with the whippets is more like - they follow you wherever you go with lots of cuddles involved. When you work with a whippet and want to teach them new things it should always be made like a fun and entertaining game and never like something they are obliged to do (I am specifically talking about commands and tricks, discipline around the house is something else). When you get your whippet, you will get the hang of it. They are very good at training us quickly LOL
Hi. I have a 7 month old whippet female and I was wondering, at what age do whippets usually reach their full height and full weight? Thank you for great videos on whippets, finally!
Hi there! Thank you, I am glad you enjoy the videos! ❤ Height depends on factors such as bloodlines and pedigree, or in other words - the genetics. In general, they should reach maximum height by 8-12 months of age, as anything afterwards is a matter of maturing and "filling up". Weight varies, as it is heavily dependent on height, body structure and the overall condition.
Hi. I have a whippet and love him and all whippets, Italian greyhounds, greyhounds and lurchers. I love your videos. I’m curious to know what nationality you are. And please introduce yourself at the start. 🐕
Thank you! ❤ I always kinda forget to introduce myself, but I will start doing that in the future videos. In short, I am Adriana, 25, and I live in Sofia, Bulgaria. 😊
We have a 6 year old indoor cat and are thinking about getting a whippet puppy. You mentioned that with the right training the whippet won't hurt the cat. Could you please explain what that training involves ? Any tips would be much appreciated, just so we know we can do it. Don't really want to upset 2 beautiful animals if it can be helped!
I recommend you watch my "Whippets and small pets - can they live together" video, there is some information on the topic. If you introduce a whippet puppy to a household that already has a small pet, especially a cat, the puppy doesn't require too much training or repetition of the "no" word. Most of my puppies were born and raised around all types of small pets, including cats and I have never, really never had a situation where I had to worry. I also have a few that went to homes with a cat or when another cat was introduced after the puppy went home - no issues. A cat is fantastic at teaching a puppy it's place, so really they take the responsibility of training without even knowing it. And we had Persians - lazy, sleepy, fluffy (which on theory is very tempting from the perspective of a sighthound) and yet very capable of showing who is boss. 😊
Hi I really need your advice. There is a 3 year old female whippet not castrated that I can adopt. She's been kept outside in a kennel. According to the owner she's friendly towards other dogs and kids. Should I adopt her and are there things I should be carefull about? Thank you 🙏
So sad to hear such a gentle pet is being held in a kennel. Maybe you should go and see her first and observe her behavior. Whippets are generally good with kids and other dogs, but I would proceed with caution, just in case. If you have any concerns just email me directly at sharewithshowpaws@gmail.com and I will do my best to help.
I've got our New Whippet now... had her three weeks exactly {12 Weeks old} ..she is very good, We started off with her in a crate but now..strange to say, she's next to me on my bed. Her ''Bad'' point is that she is a very fussy feeder. Oh my goodness. A nightmare to feed..She doesn't like dog food. She likes: Snails from the garden {BAD} Sardines. Tuna. Roast chicken. Toilet roll. Pond Weed Tea bags. Rabbit's ears. She won't eat: Good quality puppy food. Good quality kibble.
Typical little monkey! We have a fussy eater here, too and that's Lacey. She will eat all the unhealthy things and sometimes won't look at her healthy dinner. Just an idea, but you could try BARF/raw diet.
@@ShowPaws Thank you so much for replying... Yes, this naughty one is the same! she loves sardines, roast chicken {Good quality , the same as we eat} but turns her nose up at ''Balanced'' good quality puppy food. I ''Tricked'' her into eating some tinned food by hiding it on stones near the pond {she hunts for snails} ..and this WAS working... but now I think she knows it was a trick. I have tried mixing tuna in with the ''puppy food'' but she sniffs and walks away. Raw may be the best way to go. You said in another of your videos ''NO'' is a word that will come out of your mouth so much with a Whippet puppy... and I agree with this too.. I have a valuable reference book {£100} and was looking at it to reply to someone online, and I heard her chewing. I thought she was chewing her big cardboard tube.. but no, it was my book!! My fault! She will love what I am going to buy her today from the pet shop... Nail Clippers! {And some rabbit's ears} I love your Channel and your lovely Whippets.
Hi! Can you please help? I want a whippet so bad but I love blue merle australian sheperd too. I know they are not alike. Can you please tell me the differences in terms of personality, activity, etc. Ive learned on the internet but im kinda lost
Hey! So you are looking at two completely different dogs. Australian shepherds are an active, working breed, need quite a lot of physical and mental exercise and what people refer to as "easier to train", being so people-pleasing. They are bigger than whippets and due to the longer coat, there will be frequent brushing involved. Whippets are definitely not working dogs and won't look you in the eye, anticipating the next task you will give them. They are more independent so love, attention and treats is key with them. Smaller in size, shorthaired, no smell. They can be very lazy, but need to run and exercise accordingly every day. They are what I like to call "Velcro dogs", so can be prone to separation anxiety and can be quite sensitive and dramatic LOL Two completely different dogs, as I said, so my advise is to find breed enthusiasts for both breeds, meet them in person and decide who will be a better fit. 🤗
Thank you, just watching this now as have been thinking hard about having a whippet (or greyhound/lurcher). They’re lovely, sweet dogs but I have a (small) parrot and the possibility of needing to have my fathers cat to live here at some point and I don’t want to make a mistake. If the new dog was young and introduced to the cat at my dads then taken to visit a couple of times a week I wonder if that would be enough to build a tolerance without chasing? 😕
If the hound is a puppy it wouldn't be hard to teach them that the cat and the birdy are a part of the family and home. However if you take in an adult dog, I advise you to make sure they have lived with other pets and that they are proven to be cat friendly. 😊 In either case, the cat should spend as much time in your home as possible.
@@ShowPaws Thank you for the reply and advice. It’s a real shame as for some time I’d thought of having a rescue greyhound but for the issue mentioned I wasn’t sure it’d be wise without the cat here yet and only being able to do the cat visits for now. There’s pros & cons to puppy vs adult dogs (gorgeous dogs in the video btw!).
If you can keep up, good luck with keeping up. Seriously my whippet goes on runs she is an independent one we mostly go places where off leash running is allowed cause on leash running is difficult.
Whippet skin is like a balloon and shrivels back when cut so if the skin is cut or torn on a sharp object you will need to take it to a vet to get stitched back together.
Our Lacey, who is also the oldest in the pack, is very prone to plaque building up quickly, so she has to get them cleaned properly at the vet every once in a while. The rest we clean ourselves occasionally when necessary 😊

What is your opinion on Silken Windsprites or long coated Whippets?
For a sighthound beginner, would you rather recommend a normal whippet ?:)
I’ve had many normal (real) whippets. That will be your best choice
I guess my Jack Russell mix is half Whippet after all. No DNA test needed...you just described my Fifi PERFECTLY.
ahaha I love the part you mentioned about female whippets being moody that's my Dallas she wants to set all her own rules, and she 100% gets moody when I tell her "No" I love her no less even in her moody state.
@@ShowPaws Thank you.. no rush just some time in the future would be very much appreciated x
I rescued a puppy and we believe she is a whippet mix with fox terrier ir pure whippet. But she was a white cost and black spots and patches or whippet border collie or dalmatian mix one of those haha
Kuddos for rescuing and thank you for sharing ❤ If she has something whippety in her, you'd definitely also notice by the diva character LOL
@@ShowPaws yes she definitely acts like the queen hahaha all my other friends say she acts like a princess
Greys and whippets make great buddies in the same home 💖
@@ShowPaws yay!! Cannot wait to add one to our family!
Thank you for the videos. Obviously Whippets are amazing sprinters, but can they keep up on long hikes?
Introducing an adult whippet to a home with a cat can be trickier, but not impossible. You can watch my "Can whippets and cats live together" video.
@@ShowPaws thank you for the great info! Cheers! :)
ShowPaws Thank you so much! Appreciate your feed back ❤️
Hi I have owned whippets well over 40 years mostly in pairs, and you have just described the wonderful whippet to perfection brilliant thank you👍🙂
My whippet puppy really loves rain and rainy days🤣
That's one brave puppy. At least you don't have to go through a whole drama process when going outside in nasty weather 🤣
Adela.....Are you SURE you have a Whippet?? 🌧? 🐾🙂
@@Oakleaf700 absolutely 😂 she's just a little crazy😊
She likes:
Snails from the garden {BAD}
Sardines.
Tuna.
Roast chicken.
Toilet roll.
Pond Weed
Tea bags.
Rabbit's ears.
She won't eat:
Good quality puppy food.
Nail Clippers! {And some rabbit's ears}
I love your Channel and your lovely Whippets.
Love your accent. Where in the world are you from? I'm thinking French-speaking Belgium.
Thank you 🤗 I'm from Sofia, Bulgaria.
Whippets are the greatest love them there the best
I had two pure breed whippets and they did not shed hair any more than a human would however a mixed breed whippet will most certainly shed hair.
Can you run with a whippet?
If you can keep up, good luck with keeping up. Seriously my whippet goes on runs she is an independent one we mostly go places where off leash running is allowed cause on leash running is difficult.
Whippet skin is like a balloon and shrivels back when cut so if the skin is cut or torn on a sharp object you will need to take it to a vet to get stitched back together.
If you don't mind sharing your food and your bed then get a whippet, me and hubby have a foot each and whippet has three!!🤣🤣
Can they be left home alone for long
No
I like whippet bread
Are you German?
Bulgarian 😊
@@ShowPaws Lovely! Have you ever had to get your whippets teeth cleaned??
Our Lacey, who is also the oldest in the pack, is very prone to plaque building up quickly, so she has to get them cleaned properly at the vet every once in a while. The rest we clean ourselves occasionally when necessary 😊
Ну, я не думала, что так много можно п...ть ни о чем...на акценте, который, бессмысленно знаком и мне ))
Hi, I wanted to ask that how much time should I walk my whippet before they get tired?
Difference between male and female.. Hilarious
I have a male whippet.. Black and white.. He's really effocient.. I've had a female and she was quite distant and moody.. You're spot on 👍
