Thanks for the vid on the 2KXL Marow.
I use it solely as the centerpiece for my desk as a midi controller controlling other hardware samplers like the SP-404MK2, MS-1, and vsts.
I may resample into it from time to time but, to me the power is in using it to sequence gear, vsts, and the MPC software.

ive had my classic for probably 4 or 5 months now. as someone who makes ambient music, drum and bass, house, sampled hiphop and more, the classic is pretty great. 32 MIDI tracks for sequencing hardware, easy track mutes. i have everything run into my classic, records, my other samplers, drum machines, and synths, it's a very utilitarian and useful piece of equipment

There is only one feature of the xl I would like to have on my classic 2000: Adjusting the sample start and endpoint with shift & Fader. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the 2000.
I use an external MO Drive with 230MB disks. The 2000 can format this disks with up to 20 partitions. So I use partitions as folders 😎

I love the 2kxl. I love it's sound, I love the workflow, I use the MIDI to control two synths and it does everything that I want it to do. I actually wanted to get a 2k originally but my friend, RIP, had a 2kxl and he told me that the upgrade was worth it so I swapped a S2k sampler for the MPC2kxl. Never regretted it and love the 2kxl.

From my prior experience, the 2000 seems to have a cleaner sound engine when it comes to sampling from CDs in particular. 2000xl sounds slightly lower in the high end. Cant tell from low end but I definitely hear the difference playing older beats made on the 2K vs 2kxl. Both are fantastic machines but I use the XL now with that tilting screen. Great comparison.

To me the 2KXL doesn't really have a particular sound, I use mine in a very different way than yours.

Major differences to me were xl sounded cleaner than the flat 2k, tilt screen, track mute, and the biggest most important difference is the file management. The xl is so much nicer for storage and access. The xl can be upgraded easily with an SD card which is so much better than floppies. Floppies are awful. Parts are easier to find for the xl too. Of course you might as well get a Live than either of those. An xl or 2k is pretty much the same price as a Live and it is light years better than and previous mpcs. My opinion of course. Nice video Marlow.

Agreed on getting a modern MPC over the old ones. Only thing I would change is I'd say you can rock with a MPC One even better. The MPC One has more shortcut keys and it's easy to get down on. I pair mine with a Tascam Model 12 and it's a lot of fun to make music on....plus the MPC One is pretty low price for what you're getting in return.

I've had 2 instances of 'wrong file format' on my 2kxl w/ the SD Card reader. It didn't result in the entire disk needing to be wiped (along w/ everything on it), but deleting the folder w/ the bad files straightened it out. Lost about 10-20 beats but have them recorded so they live on in this format now.

Cool man 💣👌 I own both and love them. The XL has a good sound but the 2000 classic pumps and pushes like a bull. The XL has the better file system, you can create folders, easily upgrade to CF, SD card reader, as well as some useful features. I find the workflow quicker and easier on the classic, especially when I chop manually. But that's just my opinion. Peace Yoar

you should do a video comparison on 16 levels with tuning. a friend has the classic and i have the XL. the Xl time stretches the sound with each pad. on the classic it doesnt time stretching so some pads play faster then others. when doing bass it can be a hassle

I just save the OS and setup template to the scsi2sd drive. Also see a lot of people saying they have to use floppies on the 2000 classic. The 2k is a bit like the Roland s760 I have. If you sace a sample called kick 1 for example, the next project you start, if you name the kick the same it will say to overwrite when saving. So I just put a number for the project at the start of each sample. 1kick1, 1snare1 etc and for a new project 2kick1, 2snare1 etc and so on. Just name the sample quickly with the pads after sampling in. No need for floppies.

Here’s the major difference between the two machines, and it’s huge: say you make a drum kit and save it- later on you make some chops and think, “I’ll load in that drum kit and play it along with these chops”. On the XL you can do it, on the Classic you can’t. Similarly, there’s no point in making a multisample instrument like a bass on the Classic and thinking you can load it up to play along with other kits or multisampled instruments. You can do that on the XL, not the Classic.
You touched on this when you said the Classic can only have one active program and the XL can have four, but the consequences of that make these machines very very different in their capabilities, as illustrated in my examples.

Yeah, the OS thing is kinda ridiculous with the classic. That's why I think using an SCSI2SD of some kind is a must and it allows you to manage files better and quicker. Personally I wish the 2000 had actual complete ADSR and not some "AD" compromise.

The power of these machines is the sequencing, not the processing, not the efx. The easiest way to get the sounds you WANT in the sequence is to sample IN to the machine with the sound processed. It’s not “hard to figure out”. Only in the last 5-10 years have I heard/seen people complain about what it can’t do. But I guess there are people complaining that their hammer doesn’t drive screws too.
