That's facinating. I had a similar experience with the Ableton and mpc1000. I was never satisfied with the music I was making in Ableton. I got an mpc1k and learned a lot of the old 'production' way, which I then applied to ableton and got more happy with the beats I made. The MPC Live is now my happy compromise👍
I’m a straight hardware guy it took me so long to understand midi and smpte just can’t give it up for computer beats. I use the 1000, Korg Triton and the tascam 2488 and an old teac reel to reel everything sounds dope.
My first sampler was The Akai S900. It’s amazing to see how far technology has come since then. It’s also great to see the many talented people that have been coming up throughout that time. I love exploring UA-cam and finding channels like yours because I learn so much from other creators. Keep on keeping on!
True my broh. In my case, i dont have a hardware machine. Here in Peru is difficult and very expensive to get one. But im tryin my own way with a Mpd controller and old Records with a portable Numark. Im learnin from my own stuff, studyin cats like Dilla, Madlib and too much from jazz music.. Its crazy. Its all about how your spirit create somethin in a human sound. The way cats humanize an Mpc is the way i try humanize FL studio sessions.. Just learnin.. Just listenin my heart on it. Respect, broh.

I can relate. limitations have always forced creativity just like resistance forces growth. These older machines still have roles to play in many studios no matter how much technology improves. My Roland MC 909 is actually the center of my hybrid studio and I don't see that changing anytime soon. In the end, the listener cares less of how you made it or with what so keep doing what works for you!
well I'm a DAW person but I'll always appreciate those who created this a piece of hardware... some old school hip hop producer such as pete rock, j.dilla, dj premier, easy-mo-bee to name a few used hardware to produced dope hip hop sound... i respect the old head with some inspiration...
🤬After hundreds of My 2000XL floppy disk beats💾 went corrupt or damaged I was discouraged and lost the drive for a couple of years attempting to get back into beat making. Being quarantined was a blessing. I dusted my MPC off and tested my knowledge from what I knew then to what I’ve been learning now about sound and what direction I wanna take my energy of productivity with beat making. Gotta SD card upgrade by the way 🤩 thanks bro!!!
I love my 2000Xl. Got it last winter in great condition. I also got the 2500 as well. In my opinion the older MPCs look and sound better then the newer MPCs
totally agree mate, i have a 2500 and love it, the new mpc's are made out of cheaper materials, have smaller pads and have shitty weak sounding sound cards installed in them

Even some of the 2000xl's were made that way. Because Akai went bankrupt during the release of 2000xl. Numark took over the company and ran those MPCs into the ground with cheap ish. Which is why some 2000xl models have "manufactured by Akai Electric Co LTD" on them. The same company that made S950s and all Roger Linn MPCs. Lucky for those owners. But most 2000xls have manufactured by that Akai professional M.I.Corp bs. Same ish as your 2500. InMusic bought Numark. Then started putting that InMusic bs on MPC Touches to MPC Live IIs. Same quality mf.
I have owned a 2000xl since 2015, and had a 2000 from '97-2015. Nothing beats the workflow of turning the MPC on, having nothing there, and creating from scratch. Even doing old school looped beats is impeccable on the MPC. I prefer the 2000xl over the newer ones bc if I need effects, I have to manually build vs. depending on built ins. Latest thing for me is taking recorded loop beats from cassette tapes I made in the 90's, resampling them, and emulating what was on the tape. Nothing like it

Like you, I found the MPC just lets you connect with the beat and forces you to care about the sounds you put in and not stack a billion layers cos you can. It helps you to know when enough is enough
I'm always chasing new sampling gear and almost every time I end up behind my Roland SP-555 or SampleTrak ST-224. It really is all about how you use the tool. My MPC Live is great, and getting the Live II soon to replace it, mainly because of the built-in monitors and the new button layout. The old 555 & 224 will still remain best friends no matter what new gear comes out. Nice video thanks
I wouldn't say it's necessarily "the knowledge" but, the ear and actual talent for making music. There are alot of producers whom possess vast knowledge of the genre they work in, and then, there are producers whom create exceptional music no matter what equipment they use. I feel exactly what your saying when I started on my Mpc 2000XL 20 years ago also...I didn’t have a template lol I took a hour each morning and filled up a every pad with sounds and that’s what I used that day so I had to get crazy creative lol I think that’s the problem with music today everybody’s machine has a infinite amount of sounds and you get lost or just wind up using the same template and sounds...Dope video and beat
Similar situation here. Bought my 2KXL back in 00. Bought my MPC Ons in 20 and, the 2KXL is still my centerpiece in that I use it on my desktop to control MPC software via midi. I also use it to do sequences and, create midi sequence files (which can be reloaded into the MPC software or MPC). I'm totally making up for lost time.
MPC2000/XL is such a great piece of gear. I have a 2000 and it is probably the only thing I have I couldn't imagine living without. The workflow on an old MPC is perfect and I love how fast you can retake after you screw up or want to try something new. For someone not so great at playing keys, it is great to just hit undo seq >recor+play and be back into a metronome counting me in for take 2
I had the 2000 back in the day but I was told the xl was a better choice for loading and sampling easier reasoning. This is a classic piece you got to you and anybody who still use this mannnnnnn y'all are beast!!!! I always had a theory that MPC was a beat machine with a hd and buttons lol!!! i agree. i have the 3000 and its all about what you put in it.... but the magic is when you tweek the sounds in the minimal ways that the old mpc's allow you to.... the machines just SING when done properly. i'm also making up for lost time... and i finally don't hate my beats now that i'm on an mpc. but a key note is that i also use my mashine mk3 as a tool for sound design before everything goes into the mpc.
Yep. Looking for a 2500 again. 20 years on with the knowledge we now have. Jumped on one the other day and that minimalism and simplicity enables us to bang out music without distractions
When you go back and use the legacy MPC's , youll understand why Akai is Professional, and why that lengendary workflow is still carried on through to 2020. All the MPCs were, and still are beasts
I agree with your reasoning. I’m in the same boat with photography. Started getting into film and I understand why it’s better because the focus is on the art not the specs. I’m slowly getting into sampling and thought this was a good video.
So I emigrated to another country and left my entire studio at in a crate. Covid kinda messed up my plans shipping the studio over so I tried working solely in DAWs and nothing inspiring was coming out. So I decided to buy a 2500 and bam and inspiration started to flow so yeah, I get it completely. I can spend hours on that machine, just so much fun. With regards to the Force, how you finding that? I am really struggling to take my ideas and arrange them in a DAW, I have completely lost interest in using the likes of Logic and PT but the Force has always been intriguing, I have just been put off by the slew of hate it receives online.
Great video, I have the same machine and always kept it as my go to. Yes the circuitry gives a warm fat sound and I use it with Abelton allow it to operate like the newer mpc's. It's never about the machine but the man or woman rockin' it. Peace!
I always liked my MPC 2000xl, however it was a chore to learn the functions which I never perfected. It's much different for my MPC X. I literally am ONE with this unit. The instruments, the Plug ins, XY effects, effects and 8 Banks of Sounds, and the Huge Multi-touch screen. I LOVE the MPC X!
Great video!! I have been exploring this style and just using Ableton to do it. I had to really listen and understand what is happening with the music to be able to do it better. The sound quality of that machine has a lower bit resolution. It’s running on the tech of that time.
Nice video. Totally agree. I had to go from the 2500 to Live, back to the 2500 again to discover this. And yeah, having to make more hard decisions and being more selective can really have a beneficial impact on your workflow.
Interesting perspective! Thank you for sharing your opinion. I have and use the exact same model, an Akai MPC 200 XL MCD, bought it brandnew when it came out. I do not need anything more than that AND... I do think that this MPC is quite modern :-D It has everything I want and ever need. I think the best MPC is the 3000 though, but in a decent and useable state, it is simply too expensive for me right now. It's worth its price imho. That being said, it lacks one feature that is very essential to how I work. The track mute mode. The 3000 has a very solid timing, nearly perfect timing. The 2000 XL is a tiny bit sloppy with its jitter. One more thing; I recently got myself an "MPC light to go", the PO-33 pocket operator by Teenage Engineering. Now THAT is a bit difficult to work with, but some ppl on youtube already found creative ways to push the envelope a little. I really like that. I'm not a hip hop producer, though. I make Techno, but the tools are similiar. 909 instead of an 808, flanked by an MPC. Cheers!

Well put. I've acquired gear over a 20+ year span and find myself returning to my "original" pieces. There's a workflow and ease-of-use associated with vintage gear like the 2000 XL. PC based DAW's are okay, but you cant manipulate them like the "hands-on" analog gear. Nothing like it..... It's all about the art, not what gear you have. Peace. (313)

Olá Carlos, The Force and the new Mpc are very similar so yes you can do the same thing. I do everything with it, sample, cut samples, record audio tracks, arrange music....
Man listening to you got me feeling some type of way for "chasing features" and neglecting a machine that has been good to me. The MPC 2000exhale is a deadly weapon especially when you understand playing with envelopes. Mine is sentimental to me because wifey got it for me when were dating in 2005
Thank you for sharing the knowlegde! I have never used an MPC before but I recently bought an SP-505, so hard and slow to work with! You definitely make different types of beats with different tools.
Tools are great and I think the limitations of the older gear inspire a unique process for creation . At the end of the day nothin, is more important than the end result and how the makes you feel and others who enjoy your art.
I'm inclined to be disagreeable, older MPC's forced creativity, it made you appreciate the tools we have today. Especially the 2000XL. Back in the day it was state of the art then. And as another comment stated it should not make no difference what tool you use, it's what you do with it. If anyone found it frustrating at a time when it was the only useful tool at the time suprises me. Flakey floppy and SCSI Iomega Zip Drives, CF Card readers, 8 out board, digital out and effects board and if you were a hybrid pc user, Recycle and Soundforge was your best friends. Other than digging for dope samples you didn't need much else just a creative and patient mind. Anything else was a distraction.
My G since watching you, start back using your XL in spired me to put my live up and remember how fun it was to make beats with my the XL. Limitations push creativity salute.
I think with the older machines you can get a solid base of a song, then you can add stuff to it by tracking it in a DAW or make the arrangements a little more complex. With the newer machines there are more detailed screens and I think you start depending on your eyes rather than your ear (but you can always put a piece of tape on your screen). My question for the people out there, is the sound better on the older machines? Is the analog to digital to analog better? Should I record all my samples from my 2K and dump it on my Live?
I bought an mpc live because it was standalone, battery operated and simply faster and quick onboard storage.....other than that, I would still rock with my mpc2000xl.......I have a gang of signatures on it now so I keep it in storage, but I’m gonna get a new casing and set it back up to grab some old tracks.
i recently got into mpcs using a mpc one and i love it. now that i have a modern mpc checked i also wanna try the legend. slowly turning into a mpc junkie. hopefully i can find one in good condition with a card reader and the 8 outs for a good price. sounds like a dumb idea. it probably is but i dont care xD deep in my soul i know i wont regret it
Its a "pain" because - when you turn an mp on, they are (fundamentally) EMPTY. Theres nothing there so you have to WORK ..you have to think, dig, play,create . you genuinely have to make an effort and after that fact- you get out what you put in.and thats why many state that they "put they're mpc up" and " have to dust it off" .this new shit - the hard parts are taken care of.you can download 5 years of work in 2 minutes and theres 3 million "lo-fi producers and they all sound pretty dope. But ya ....it takes a certain type to handle it well . and i KNOW already - no one cares what i think . but its true facts . real heads know
I totally feel you, I somewhat did the same thing, Although I didn't go back to my mpc, But I set up a whole new setup with the force synced up with the mpc and cubase, But everything is able to start on the force. For the most part I can get the whole song done there unless it's in need of longer vocals but can still be done... THey're all great pieces of gear..
Would recommend the 2000 or the 2000XL to a beginner in favour of a newer model like the MPC one or do think that the newer models work better as a standalone machine?
I can't recommend older machine no new beatmakers, get the mpc one, it will help you a lot more to develop skills and a style. Later on you can go back in time and get an old Mpc and test it out.

I still use a 2000XL. I have an SD card reader in mine so I will sample into the XL, then, swap the SD card into the PC and cut up the samples, in my DAW then put them back into the MPC to sequence. This speeds up the chopping for me a lot but allows me to keep the sonics and creative flow of the MPC. Loved the beats through this whole segment by the way.
Well, even if I ve just started with this huge world of making music, it was with the mpc(live) that I could start feeling good making some music. I tried before to start after reading many post with the maschine(studio), ableton, etc and then I change to the mpc and it was when I discovered your channel like 1 year ago, so thanks cause I've watched the whole mpc's tutorials to learn about it! By the way, I ve also got an OP-1 and it's also a super nice tool to do. Quite different and with thousands of limitations that push you to create in another way. At the same time, it is unlimited all the features that it has. It would be nice you try it (in case you didn't) and have your thoughts. Thanks for the video, keep watching you!
Been using my 60ii since 91, also own the 2000xl se1 and an ASQ-10. ~ There just amazing bits of kit, - Akai pro hasn't been quite the same since Numark took over, imo. The lack of visual feedback, the tape-styled transport controls and the connectivity just makes the old units feel more like musical instruments, one is forced to use their ears more than their eyes,- the new ones are cool, but they're more DAW+controller, than sequencing drum sampler...
I had this same experience. I started with the 4k, moved over to DAW world for a long time, then came back to it and got way better results. It sucks that these machines are getting old and the parts are getting harder to find.

I paid my dues with the S20, 2000, 4000.. Now I use my Mpc One with great appreciation and not looking back.

The workflow on an old MPC is perfect and I love how fast you can retake after you screw up or want to try something new. For someone not so great at playing keys, it is great to just hit undo seq >recor+play and be back into a metronome counting me in for take 2

I had the 2000 back in the day but I was told the xl was a better choice for loading and sampling easier reasoning. This is a classic piece you got to you and anybody who still use this mannnnnnn y'all are beast!!!! I always had a theory that MPC was a beat machine with a hd and buttons lol!!! I just followed you on Ig I would love to see and hear more of your work!!!!
i agree. i have the 3000 and its all about what you put in it.... but the magic is when you tweek the sounds in the minimal ways that the old mpc's allow you to.... the machines just SING when done properly. i'm also making up for lost time... and i finally don't hate my beats now that i'm on an mpc. but a key note is that i also use my mashine mk3 as a tool for sound design before everything goes into the mpc.

I agree with your reasoning. I’m in the same boat with photography. Started getting into film and I understand why it’s better because the focus is on the art not the specs. I’m slowly getting into sampling and thought this was a good video.

So I emigrated to another country and left my entire studio at in a crate. Covid kinda messed up my plans shipping the studio over so I tried working solely in DAWs and nothing inspiring was coming out. So I decided to buy a 2500 and bam and inspiration started to flow so yeah, I get it completely. I can spend hours on that machine, just so much fun.
With regards to the Force, how you finding that? I am really struggling to take my ideas and arrange them in a DAW, I have completely lost interest in using the likes of Logic and PT but the Force has always been intriguing, I have just been put off by the slew of hate it receives online.
Great video, I have the same machine and always kept it as my go to. Yes the circuitry gives a warm fat sound and I use it with Abelton allow it to operate like the newer mpc's. It's never about the machine but the man or woman rockin' it. Peace!
I always liked my MPC 2000xl, however it was a chore to learn the functions which I never perfected. It's much different for my MPC X. I literally am ONE with this unit. The instruments, the Plug ins, XY effects, effects and 8 Banks of Sounds, and the Huge Multi-touch screen. I LOVE the MPC X!
Great video!! I have been exploring this style and just using Ableton to do it. I had to really listen and understand what is happening with the music to be able to do it better. The sound quality of that machine has a lower bit resolution. It’s running on the tech of that time.
Nice video. Totally agree. I had to go from the 2500 to Live, back to the 2500 again to discover this. And yeah, having to make more hard decisions and being more selective can really have a beneficial impact on your workflow.

Interesting perspective! Thank you for sharing your opinion. I have and use the exact same model, an Akai MPC 200 XL MCD, bought it brandnew when it came out. I do not need anything more than that AND... I do think that this MPC is quite modern :-D It has everything I want and ever need. I think the best MPC is the 3000 though, but in a decent and useable state, it is simply too expensive for me right now. It's worth its price imho. That being said, it lacks one feature that is very essential to how I work. The track mute mode. The 3000 has a very solid timing, nearly perfect timing. The 2000 XL is a tiny bit sloppy with its jitter. One more thing; I recently got myself an "MPC light to go", the PO-33 pocket operator by Teenage Engineering. Now THAT is a bit difficult to work with, but some ppl on youtube already found creative ways to push the envelope a little. I really like that. I'm not a hip hop producer, though. I make Techno, but the tools are similiar. 909 instead of an 808, flanked by an MPC. Cheers!

I've acquired gear over a 20+ year span and find myself returning to my "original" pieces.
There's a workflow and ease-of-use associated with vintage gear like the 2000 XL. PC based DAW's are okay, but you cant manipulate them like the "hands-on" analog gear. Nothing like it.....
It's all about the art, not what gear you have.

Olá Carlos, The Force and the new Mpc are very similar so yes you can do the same thing. I do everything with it, sample, cut samples, record audio tracks, arrange music....

Man listening to you got me feeling some type of way for "chasing features" and neglecting a machine that has been good to me. The MPC 2000exhale is a deadly weapon especially when you understand playing with envelopes. Mine is sentimental to me because wifey got it for me when were dating in 2005

Tools are great and I think the limitations of the older gear inspire a unique process for creation . At the end of the day nothin, is more important than the end result and how the makes you feel and others who enjoy your art.

I put a USB emulator in my 2000 Classic. It's like a new machine. It has its own feel and gives you a more artistic approach.
I'm inclined to be disagreeable, older MPC's forced creativity, it made you appreciate the tools we have today. Especially the 2000XL. Back in the day it was state of the art then. And as another comment stated it should not make no difference what tool you use, it's what you do with it. If anyone found it frustrating at a time when it was the only useful tool at the time suprises me.
Flakey floppy and SCSI Iomega Zip Drives, CF Card readers, 8 out board, digital out and effects board and if you were a hybrid pc user, Recycle and Soundforge was your best friends. Other than digging for dope samples you didn't need much else just a creative and patient mind. Anything else was a distraction.
My G since watching you, start back using your XL in spired me to put my live up and remember how fun it was to make beats with my the XL. Limitations push creativity salute.

I think with the older machines you can get a solid base of a song, then you can add stuff to it by tracking it in a DAW or make the arrangements a little more complex. With the newer machines there are more detailed screens and I think you start depending on your eyes rather than your ear (but you can always put a piece of tape on your screen). My question for the people out there, is the sound better on the older machines? Is the analog to digital to analog better? Should I record all my samples from my 2K and dump it on my Live?

I bought an mpc live because it was standalone, battery operated and simply faster and quick onboard storage.....other than that, I would still rock with my mpc2000xl.......I have a gang of signatures on it now so I keep it in storage, but I’m gonna get a new casing and set it back up to grab some old tracks.

i recently got into mpcs using a mpc one and i love it. now that i have a modern mpc checked i also wanna try the legend. slowly turning into a mpc junkie. hopefully i can find one in good condition with a card reader and the 8 outs for a good price. sounds like a dumb idea. it probably is but i dont care xD deep in my soul i know i wont regret it

Its a "pain" because - when you turn an mp on, they are (fundamentally) EMPTY. Theres nothing there so you have to WORK ..you have to think, dig, play,create . you genuinely have to make an effort and after that fact- you get out what you put in.and thats why many state that they "put they're mpc up" and " have to dust it off" .this new shit - the hard parts are taken care of.you can download 5 years of work in 2 minutes and theres 3 million "lo-fi producers and they all sound pretty dope. But ya ....it takes a certain type to handle it well . and i KNOW already - no one cares what i think . but its true facts . real heads know

I totally feel you, I somewhat did the same thing, Although I didn't go back to my mpc, But I set up a whole new setup with the force synced up with the mpc and cubase, But everything is able to start on the force. For the most part I can get the whole song done there unless it's in need of longer vocals but can still be done... THey're all great pieces of gear..
Would recommend the 2000 or the 2000XL to a beginner in favour of a newer model like the MPC one or do think that the newer models work better as a standalone machine?
I can't recommend older machine no new beatmakers, get the mpc one, it will help you a lot more to develop skills and a style. Later on you can go back in time and get an old Mpc and test it out.

I still use a 2000XL. I have an SD card reader in mine so I will sample into the XL, then, swap the SD card into the PC and cut up the samples, in my DAW then put them back into the MPC to sequence. This speeds up the chopping for me a lot but allows me to keep the sonics and creative flow of the MPC. Loved the beats through this whole segment by the way.
Didn't the 2000XL have auto-chop tho? Asking as someone who messed with a mpc 1000 back in the day...

Well, even if I ve just started with this huge world of making music, it was with the mpc(live) that I could start feeling good making some music. I tried before to start after reading many post with the maschine(studio), ableton, etc and then I change to the mpc and it was when I discovered your channel like 1 year ago, so thanks cause I've watched the whole mpc's tutorials to learn about it! By the way, I ve also got an OP-1 and it's also a super nice tool to do. Quite different and with thousands of limitations that push you to create in another way. At the same time, it is unlimited all the features that it has. It would be nice you try it (in case you didn't) and have your thoughts. Thanks for the video, keep watching you!
I like how you express the pain of the XL! It’s was the only reason I upgraded from the MPC2000 to the MPC2500. Hahaha!
Been using my 60ii since 91, also own the 2000xl se1 and an ASQ-10.
~ There just amazing bits of kit, - Akai pro hasn't been quite the same since Numark took over, imo.
The lack of visual feedback, the tape-styled transport controls and the connectivity just makes the old units feel more like musical instruments, one is forced to use their ears more than their eyes,- the new ones are cool, but they're more DAW+controller, than sequencing drum sampler...
That's what I was thinking. Looking at piano roll changes everything.

I had this same experience. I started with the 4k, moved over to DAW world for a long time, then came back to it and got way better results. It sucks that these machines are getting old and the parts are getting harder to find.
The Boss and Roland sampler series are my favorites.
