That's a really good question. I often assumed because we here in NZ are more densely populated, meaning we don't have to travel between big cities constantly for basic needs (we can remain isolated in socio/geographic regions and areas), whereas in Australia they have to travel more between the big cities? That's just a wild guess, though. I would suggest that given Māori and Pasifika have distinguishable accents (particularly in Auckland) that could play a role...
