The US passed Ukraine aid. What will it change?

  • April 20 marked the end of a months-long struggle in the U.S. Congress to pass a $95 billion foreign aid package, which included $61 billion in aid for Ukraine. The bill was approved in the Senate yesterday and then sent to President Biden to be signed into law, with weapons and equipment expected to start arriving in Ukraine by the end of this week.
The Kyiv Independent’s Anna Belokur breaks down the contents of the aid package and what it will mean for Ukraine, both on the battlefield and at home.

I'm furious it passed! Why prolong an unwinable war? Why sponsor the death of hundreds of thousands more Ukrainians? Why not pursue peace instead? Why has our government learned nothing from the failures of the Iraq and Afghan Wars? Why is it instead repeating them by prolonging yet another forever war? Even if as Mike Johnson says that this war is different since it is Ukraine who is supplying the bodies and not us. What could we have done here at home with $60B dollars?

Key is that munitions from Ukraine is coming from pre-existing, pre-positioned stockpiles in Europe; With the United States being the global master of war-fighting logistics, here's hoping those stockpiles were at well over 100%... the replenishment "pipeline" can safely take a little more time... as Ukrainians do the tough stuff. Poland has proven a useful parking lot/marshaling area.

I few things i feel like i need to say. First thing, i am a huge Ukraine supporter. Like many i had no interests or knowledge about Ukraine previous to the war, but seeing what Russia has done and how the Ukrainian people have stood up to protect their country inspired me like many. I'm grateful and happy the bill passed and the men and women who need help will get it. The issue i have is people who seem to attack my country unfairly for the way our process works it is slow sometimes, and people abuse their power in congress to block things but we are the most generous country that has ever existed and i'm proud of that. So it sucks to see when we are giving so much to a place and people seem either ungrateful or even resentful against us for this not passing in the time they wanted, i understand the frustration but don't be mad at us , be mad at the russian government for starting and causing this mess, not the people trying to help .

The legislative process in the US has always been slow and cumbersome. But there are ways to expedite things that are important.
The problem here is that we have some anti-democratic. Anti-government manga Republicans who use their narrow majority to delay The proceedings.

I get it , but people familiar with the area and it’s history understood that when clinton forced unilateral disarmament upon Ukraine , wildly in favour of its genocidal historical enemy , that the war we are now witness to would inevitably come . Every step between then and the present that america might have taken to help were not taken . Georgia invasion in ‘08 , and the initial invasion and occupation of Ukrainian land in ‘14 , come to mind . Every request for weapons by Ukraine was turned down but one , and washington’s response to the invasion of Ukraine was that Ukraine should give up whatever rusha takes . I could go on in much greater detail at length , but even if things work out for Ukraine, america will not look good in this episode of history. Ask yourself how many tens of thousands have died or been horrendously crippled while america put on a political clown show that truly makes your politicians seem like deranged , malignant children . Maybe while you ponder that you’ll arrive at some understanding why so many are so disgusted with america . The weapons requested had been gathering dust for decades as they grew increasingly obsolete and in some cases , giving them to Ukraine was cheaper than disposing of them in a legal manner … etc.

Can we just say how pathetic it is though that Russia couldn’t defeat Ukraine the first week and couldn’t gain a bigger initiative while the U.S. was out for 6 months? Like, they took some ground, but barely anything against a military that is, theoretically, significantly weaker than them. It shows both how well Ukraine has adapted to the war as well as how horribly managed the Russian military is

The real issue is not understanding the nature of democracy. You can't say we will ALWAYS be with you and actually mean it. There is always opposition regardless of the issue. Therefore, you have to plan for the worse case. That is where Biden failed miserably. He could have had much bigger packages approved early on when the Dems controlled both houses. Using residue money for a 'rainy day'. Instead, he did this one painful bit at a time. Right now, they need to be planning for the next package and put that in the budget for fiscal 2025 which begins in Oct of 24. That means in the "worst case' if Donald Trump is elected than during the lame duck congress in December, they have a good chance of passing the bill with a substantial majority while Biden is still in office (until Jan 20 of 2025). However, politicians in a democracy, (and it doesn't matter what democracy in Europe or North America) will always wait until the last minute and be the cause of very avoidable crisis. BTW, Europe still has not woken up fully to the realization that time is of the essence... lots of words to that effect, while the painfully slow-moving European bureaucracy is feeling no urgency from its political masters.

Here is why there is a difference in the language level of the various channels promoting Ukrainian struggle: unlike a normal country in a peaceful situation, Ukraine is in a deep crisis, the likes of which we in the West don't really comprehend and it's all hands on deck. And not all hands are equal. The perfection of the language skills and many other aspects, are secondary to helping out.

It's actually a good question because UATV is a state channel while the others are independent journalists. Maybe the state pays poorly? Maybe their employees are inherited from the old state media going back to Soviet times and the promotions are done on, erm, different criteria?
The more interesting difference is that Kyiv Independent is much more critical of the local government. As they should be.
