The dpad is too mushy, face buttons too stiff, and the sides dig into your hand too much. I’m tempted to purchase 3 DS4’s with an adapter so I don’t have to use the dual sense
Mate, you talking about the origins of wireless controllers really brings back memories. I remember first time playing my PS3 and being mind blown that I it didn't need wired connections to the console!
I think I agree with you on the PS5 controller. I really really liked the "HD rumble" on the switch pro controller, and the DualShock 5 is that with the resistance triggers as well. I have quite the nostalgia for the Amiga joystick, and I think the GameCube controller is great as well.
I feel like the most comfortable are the Switch Pro and Xbox Series controllers. The most iconic for me are the NES, SNES, Megadrive (Genesis) and the first PlayStation. I can’t forget N64 and Dreamcast for pushing the design/functionality envelope. My all time favourite is the SNES controller. For me, it seems to represent everything I love about gaming….. because I’m old.
First I’m a Nintendo fan boy and have only owned every Nintendo console and most handhelds. For me it’s a virtual tie between the SNES and Switch Pro. Very different controllers but the way they have impacted me and my life. SNES is my favourite for nostalgia and what it means to me for my childhood. A Link to the Past is the perfect game and impacted me so much that it will never be replaced. Switch Pro is such a perfect controller in all aspects that I would be surprised if it is ever replaced. Playing unhealthy hours of Breath of the Wild has helped my decision of course.
360's had great triggers and nice face buttons but it felt huge, the dpad was terrible and LB/RB never felt right to hold nor mash. I never liked it, but imo the One's was a huge upgrade as it fixed pretty much all my issues. That said I still prefer PS controllers
I’ve gotta say, I have a soft spot for the N64 controller. My reasoning is that if you look at the now-standard controller design (dpad, sticks, triggers/bumpers, 4 face buttons) they can pretty much get the job done on any console - with the exception of the N64. There’s no way better way to play an N64 than with an N64 controller. Nobody likes using the right stick for C buttons!
I agree, I’ve always liked the controller, at least when I figured out how to hold it properly, haha. The only thing I hate about it is how fast the analog stick would get messed up.
It's not just that the N64 is the best controller for N64 games - it has a great multipurpose design for its time. Holding it from the left and right outside grips, it's a pretty darn good six button controller! Maybe not as good as the Saturn controller, but the form factor and button layout is still pretty good. And then of course you have the ability to use it as an analog controller for 3D games using the middle and right grips...which of course is the configuration the majority of games published on the platform actually used, even when they were sidescrollers. Once the DualShock controller was introduced and camera control in 3D games became more complex, the N64 controller became obsolete in the overall gaming market. But as a game controller for the mid-90s that lets you control both 2D and 3D games, it's quite well designed!
@@ShadowEl Yeah this biggest problem with it was really that the software didnt support multiple grips for the most part. Having the middle grip that you can use with either hand depending on what the game needs is a brilliant idea. It just didn't get the support that it could have. 90% of the time you are holding it in the standard fashion with the middle and right grips, but on paper it's design should let you play say super mario with the dpad without losing any features. Not sure why more games didn't support this.
Surprised you didn't mention the Xbox Elite Series 2, hands down my favorite controller to date. The premium build, the weight, the customization, the battery that lasts weeks. It's controller perfection.
Nintendo Power Glove for retro controllers (just makes me happy to see displayed in my game room), and the new Forza Horizon 5 Edition Xbox Series controller for modern controllers are my picks.
Wii U gamepad is my favorite. I like the size- doesnt hurt my hand, the swiping the screen to dodge in bayonetta, touch screen switch controls for shovel knight, and being able to watch hapoyconsolegamer on it right now actually (though im typing this comment on an ipad lol, too bad i cant add a comment on videos on it)
Have a real soft spot for the Xbox 360 controller. Great design, the battery pack is almost like a little cubby holder for your fingers, played a few of them to death during my competitive gaming years. Dualsense is also great, many amazing experiences to come with that one I hope!
For me nothing beats the Switch Pro Controller. It was made to fit perfectly in my hands and still runs great after many hundreds of hours of Smash. Johnny didn't mention battery life in any of these comparisons, but the pro controller can go DAYS without a charge. In contrast the DS4 can barely last a play session because the touch pad and light drain so much battery.
It's a great controller in all the ways you mentioned. My only knock on it is the d-pad. It's a step backwards and very disappointing because Nintendo has been the gold standard for d-pads for decades.
I ordered a Japan pink and other than a few grips with the menu design, they knocked this console out of the park! I hope that the software can be updated/modded over time. I recommend playing Elevator Action Returns!
My sweet spot in the Playstation timeline was the PS3. I always felt the PS4 was trying to push forward out of my hands, and the triggers gave me no barrier to push against like the frame of the PS1, PS2 and PS3 did. I love the PS5's controller, the new angle solves the PS4's problem, and the analog grips are the best ever put into design. My problem is the controller is just about 10% too large for me to reach all the optional buttons quickly, its not as effortless to navigate the face as the PS1-4 design. Also the PS logo cutout should've just been a damn button.
I love the switch pro the ps4, and I have a soft spot for the GameCube (it just feels good it's not perfect). I was actually really worried about the PS5 remote design. Great to know how you feel!
I had a wireless controller for the NES. Camerica Supersonic. It's triangle shaped, there's are A+B buttons on both sides of the stick, so you can use the stick with either your right or left hand, and it uses IR for the wireless signal. It was pretty cool at the time, but required direct line of sight, so sometimes it would stop working in the middle of a game if something got in the way of that line of sight.
My choice for the best controller I've used will definitely go to the Switch Pro Controller. Love everything about it; the weight, the feel, everything. My big regret is that I didn't buy the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 version of it when it was for sale. Also really looking forward for Dualsense, which I'll soon be getting for my pc. I had been contemplating on getting it for a while, and now that they've brought out all those cool colors for it, I'm sold. Going for the Nova Pink color on that one. Also an honorable mention; not that it's my favorite one, but I really like the original Xbox controller. Sure it doesn't quite hold put to the newer designs, but it sure left a great impression on me when it came out. Holding it for the first time in my then 11 year old hands and playing Halo felt like I was actually holding something real, like a gun or something. Good video, looking forward to the next one!
Great video John, as far as i know, that grey/brown Saturn controller is what the original Japanese consol game with. Sega USA had the idea for the black one with the weak left right triggers.
Great video. The concave Super Nintendo buttons always reminded me of American smarties (Canadian smarties are different), and I always loved that haha
Analog triggers make a lot of difference for me, mainly for racing games, not having them on the Switch Pro is just sad because everything else it is, as you said, the perfect controller.
My favorite controller will always be the N64 one. I haven't touched one in forEVER, but any time I see one it triggers those magical feelings of nostalgia, it was the first console in my life that I have significant memories of playing (right next to the OG Gameboy). Other controllers that elicit that same feeling are the Dualshock 1 and the SNES controllers. I also love the concave contours of the top two buttons on the SNES controller, I always imagined they were those Smarties candies. My favorite controller to use is the Switch Pro Controller. Never held anything so comfortable. And to me, I think the most iconic controller, at least for the modern gaming age, is the Xbox 360 controller, just because of what a big deal Xbox Live was, and how often they were used and recommended for PC games on Windows. I only just retired my last one a few weeks ago after I got the newer Xbox Series X controller. My least favorite controller are the damned Joy-Cons. If they aren't broken within a few months of buying them, you're probably already disappointed in how the cool features that add to the cost aren't even used in most games.
For me currently its definitely the series X/S controller. It feels great to hold and can switch seamlessly between PC and Console play in the press of a button. For classic controllers I'd probably go with Dualshock 2
lol I remember having the same problem with the nes d-pad at first. I had only used joysticks, so when I first saw the nes pad it looked so weird and I didn’t understand how to use it. Took me a while to get the hang of essentially using buttons to move.
My favorite controller of all time as of now is the current iteration of the Xbox controller, released with the Series S and X models. To me, it is just the perfect all purpose video game controller. Do I wish it had gyro sensors, haptic feedback, and a freaking rechargeable battery? Yes, I absolutely do. But I love the form factor more than any other controller ever created, and that goes back to the Xbox 360 controller. From the 360 to the Xbone to the current Xbox Series, they have constantly made little tweaks and iterations (improved D-pad and triggers, better grips) to what is ultimately the controller form factor that has always just felt perfect and intuitive in my hands since the first time I picked it up to play Call of Duty 2 at a store kiosk in 2005.
I actually find the series x/s controller a HUGE improvement over the Xbox one controller ergonomically. Making that slight adjustment to the shape of the controller going towards the RB/LB buttons makes the controller so much more comfortable. It’s a wonderful controller, second only to the dualsense IMO. Sony and Microsoft knocked it out of the park with their controller designs this gen.
@@PullOutPapa I'm excited to try the DualSense after Johnny's high praise in this video. He got one thing right for sure, which is that the damn thing is ugly as sin. But if it's half as good as he says it is, I can't wait to literally get my hands on it.
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I love the Wii mote and nunchuck. Such a variety of uses. Lets you relax your hands, not squished together. Amazing and accurate pointing if you set it up properly. So good and innovative.
The DC controller gets too much hate, i really really like it. The only thing that i think should have been different is that the triggers should have been a little higher up and the Saturn D-pad and a second analog stick would have been nice i guess, but they're not deal breakers, i have a real soft spot for it. wish it would have been around longer so we could have seen a second iteration.
Without any retrospective in mind, the xbox elite 2 is my favorite controller so far. Not only is it made of high quality materials, it is also easily adjustable, battery lasts very long, it feels great and I can play on almost any device and almost all games with it.
Holly smokes being a Street Fighter II fan playing on the SNES but what a game changer it was playing SFII on the Genesis with the 6 button controller.
NES Max was great. And then on the SNES there was this third party thing I randomly picked up called the ASCII Pad, it was awesome, u could set turbo on any button.
Love the list! Also want to add this... For all of the things the steam controller failed with I still love the back paddles on it. I wish every controller had them. I really believe the controllers of the future will have them.
Hey John, love your channel and have been a fan for years. Was wondering if you can maybe let us know what games some of the songs are from that you play in the background because I always hear so many cool songs and I recognise some but not others. Hope you and the family are well.
The triggers in the dualsense are just incredible, I play gran turismo and I couldn't control the car if I turn them off, the amount of feedback of what going on in the game it's just awesome, nothing comes close, hope third party games support that function
So many good controllers, but the one that I personally would choose to play every game with is the brand new Xbox controller with the new disc d-pad. That controller fits my hand perfectly, I love the clickyness of the buttons, sticks feel just right, and that Hybrid Dpad is a gamechanger, it is surprisingly my favourite dpad, and I thought I would hate it when I saw it. More specifically, the 20th anniversary version of this controller has an incredible feel to it, and has the translucent look that reminds me of my 90s childhood with colourful iMacs and N65 controllers.
The Xbox One controller is probably my favourite. I use it all the time on my PC to play games. I'd put it higher than the series controller because I personally prefer the XBONE dpad.
I think you should get an Xbox Elite 2 controller Johnny. I'm not saying it's the best controller, but honestly it might actually be for me. It has paddles on the back, spare parts that you can exchange yourself to suit each game, a switch that determines how far down the L and R buttons are pushed, predetermined set ups and it has a rubber grip that makes it easy to hold.
Totally agree. I had second thoughts about the price but I don't regret it for a minute. And don't forget the battery! I swear I charge it twice a month, if that. And I love that you can program 3 mapping configurations.
It's not my #1, but I really love the smaller redesigned original Xbox controller because of the black and white buttons. In Jedi Academy I used to set one button as force push and the other as force pull and I absolutely loved how I could have multiple force powers set that way. I think it's a shame those buttons died off and never really came back. The Switch Pro controller has probably become my favorite now. It's just so comfortable and easy to play with for long periods. To this day though the SNES is still my preferred controller for 2D games.
SNES pad is probably best designed prior to analog/rumble pads. But I'll always have a special place in my heart for Sega Master System pad (and with no select/run buttons) and Mega Drive/Genesis crescent pad, which was just super nice looking.
Off the top of my head, a few of my favorites are: SNES, PS2, PS4, 360. The PS5 one is really good with the adaptive triggers too. It’s has grown on me fast.
Without a doubt the official Mega Drive 6 button controller is my favourite, it’s the ultimate controller for street fighter 2, hell i still use it to play Street Fighter V with a mayflash adapter, and I’ll do the same with the upcoming Street Fighter 6, as far as modem controllers to the Xbox one elite is my favourite, the analogue sticks are on another level for smoothness and accuracy, no dead zone at all
My favorite controller depends on the games because some games fit the controller just right. I haven't used them all, but my favorite overall controller is the PS2 because of its design. Then the super nintendo. A game like soul calibur 2 feels better with the gamecube controller.
I'd have to say and this is mainly nostalgia talking but the dualshocks are my favorite. 1-3 that classic somewhat small design. I love dualsense and dualshock 4 but man something about the older ones especially the dualshock 2 just brings back so many fond memories
My favorites are the NES, SNES and Gamecube controllers. I so wish I had a wavebird but they are fairly pricey. I don't know if I would end up using it enough to justify the price.

My all time favourite is the SNES controller. For me, it seems to represent everything I love about gaming….. because I’m old.
Xbox Series controller is so loud, especially the dpad. Buttons are very tactile and have perfect height, but are so freaking clicky.
Cool list man. I found the same matrix of leadership dvd set locally for a great deal. Im keeping it in my collection.
The DualSense, no contest. I'd say my second and third favourites are the GameCube controller and the Xbox 360 controller respectively.
The n64 is the 2nd worst gaming controller only behind the atari 5200 controller
@@Motorheadache95 You said it man.
Dreamcast v2 still remains at the top of my list and will probably always be. Nothing has compared to its dpad and how well it registers.
Have you tried the modern update to it? The Retrofighters StrikerDC.
@@NMack-is3nb OH no wait I meant the Saturn controller. But yeah the new RetroFighters controller is pretty good.
Wii U Pro is the most comfortable in hand for me & The XB Adaptive Controller is the best concept in recent memory
And that battery life!
Aside from having to strap a wii mote onto it for gyro aiming (LMAO) it was an absolute beast
Keep the good stuff coming big guy. Always enjoy your videos and enthusiasm .
Great topic Johnny!!
Totally agree. The Dual Sense rules. Love the weight of it. Can't wait to try out the PSVR2 controllers.
The Dualsense is definitely my favorite and I've been gaming for over 30 years
This was so much fun. Thanks for spreading the Happiness.
My favorite was the GameCube controller , PS4 and the snes controllers
Wii U gamepad is my favorite. I like the size- doesnt hurt my hand, the swiping the screen to dodge in bayonetta, touch screen switch controls for shovel knight, and being able to watch hapoyconsolegamer on it right now actually (though im typing this comment on an ipad lol, too bad i cant add a comment on videos on it)
The Duke, " I'm not even gonna show it ", then instantly shows it. Ha ha.
Have a real soft spot for the Xbox 360 controller. Great design, the battery pack is almost like a little cubby holder for your fingers, played a few of them to death during my competitive gaming years. Dualsense is also great, many amazing experiences to come with that one I hope!
Absolutely with you. The DualSense is perfection for me.
Either the Japanese Saturn Controller, or the Gamecube Controller. However every controller with magnetic field analog sticks are 1st class
We love you Johnny.
Talking about the WaveBird like he just unearthed it from King Tut's tomb. Feeling old, haha
Great video John, as far as i know, that grey/brown Saturn controller is what the original Japanese consol game with. Sega USA had the idea for the black one with the weak left right triggers.
No love for the Dreamcast controller? That thing was so cool and ahead of it’s time with the VMU and screen. Such a neat controller!
No dual analog, shitty d-pad, shitty analog stick, wire comes out from the bottom instead of the top.
@@poncho828 What games would have used a second analog stick?
Great video. The concave Super Nintendo buttons always reminded me of American smarties (Canadian smarties are different), and I always loved that haha
I appreciate the rouge galaxy music in the background so much >w< my favorite JRPG
I've always loved the Sega Genesis 6-button controller.
lol I remember having the same problem with the nes d-pad at first.
The SNES and Dreamcast controller are basically the 2 that have shaped modern controllers the most
More so the NES. The SNES controller was iterative to the importance of the NES controller.
You had the infrared wireless Saturn controller that was my first experience with a wireless controller back in 1998.
I've been into the NES since the early 90s. My two favorite retro controllers are Super Famicom and 6 button Genesis.
At the start of your video, one thought rushed through my head: "the super nintendo controller!!" Loved that thing!!! I was born in 86. (:
Dual Shock 2 will always be my favorite. I use it this day with almost all my games.
Hey John, love your channel and have been a fan for years. Was wondering if you can maybe let us know what games some of the songs are from that you play in the background because I always hear so many cool songs and I recognise some but not others. Hope you and the family are well.
I agree, no remote for me comes close to the PS5 controller. The haptic feedback appeared like a gimmick, but really isn't.
Loved my mk2 Saturn controller. Big fan of switch pro, PS4 and series x 20th anniversary.
I'd love if Johnny would put a tracklist for each of videos. The tracks in the background of his videos are so good.
Great episode, I loved all the unique stories attached to each controller. Cannot wait for the most hated episode!
Haven’t had a chance to try out the ps5 controller yet, but the ps4 and gamecube are for sure my favourites!
Happy (and Nostalgic) Gamer. 🤩🤝
SNES pad is probably best designed prior to analog/rumble pads. But I'll always have a special place in my heart for Sega Master System pad (and with no select/run buttons) and Mega Drive/Genesis crescent pad, which was just super nice looking.
I think the design of the 360 controller was perfection. I still use it with a MayFlash dongle so I can use it on my switch and PS3.
Off the top of my head, a few of my favorites are: SNES, PS2, PS4, 360. The PS5 one is really good with the adaptive triggers too. It’s has grown on me fast.
Unrelated to the video, but i'm REALLY enjoying Triangularpath Strategies. Favorite controller is either the Switch Pro Controller or SNES.
Back in the day I loved my 6 button sega Genesis controller I had to have it for Street Fighter😎😀
Right off the top of my head right now, my three favorite controllers are the PSone Dualshock controller, the Dualshock 3, and Gamecube controller.
The DuelSense is just amazing it has to be held to understand the hype!
Porkchop sandwiches!! 😂🤣 Had to go back and watch that video with seeing your t-shirt! 😂
