I love how you looked so skeptical at first, and was 100% in at the end!!! It's one of those songs that can do it!! Thanks for doing this for guys, much love!!
I was driving back from a Prince Concert in Tallahassee Florida on my way home to Dothan Alabama. We pulled over at a little bar in the middle of nowhere to use the restroom. We sat down at the bar to wait out the person using the restroom. We had purple glitter on us from the show. A man turned and said " where have you been to have glitter all over your clothes? I said A Prince Concert. We talked for a few about Prince's guitar playing. Finally he said, you should come see me play sometime, I'm not that level of playing but I'm not bad. I just shook my head and said that's cool. After a few seconds he said, I'm Hank jr. by the way, nice to meet you! I almost fell off the barstool 😂 He's sooo down to earth. ❤️
Oh, that is such a cool encounter. Hank Jr can really PLAY. Of course, he can sing like nobody's business, but he can play too. I don't know if he can play as many instruments as Prince could, I think Prince could play like 26 instruments. But Hank Jr can play more than just guitar.
Nowadays when you in a bar and this comes on the juke.... when he sings, "why do you drink?" Everyone yells "TO GET DRUNK!!!", and when he sings, " why do you roll smoke?" Everyone yells "TO GET STONED!!!" 😂😂😂 Have a great Holiday brothers!!! Peace From PA ✌️
I scrolled down to make sure someone told them that.... nothing gets a bar more united and all smiles than when this song is played :) Merry Christmas Josh!
Hank Williams, Jr. life story is fascinating. He was just a toddler when his father died and as he grew, his mother and his ‘’handlers ‘’ tried to force him into becoming a duplicate of his father. Eventually he rebelled ad developed his own style. He once went on a hunting trip to the mountains with a friend and the friend’s son. He slipped and literally fell 500 feet down the side of the mountain. He barely survived and his entire face had to be rebuilt. That is why he wears the beard and the sunglasses. He built a successful career of his own, but still gives respect to his father. If you watched Monday Night Football a few years ago, you probably have heard him. He sang the Monday Night Football theme for years. ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL, A MONDAY NIGHT PARTY. This song has two meanings. The FAMILY TRADITION refers to the ‘’country establishment ‘’ traditions, but it also references Hank,Sr who was a bit of an outlaw himself. He was a heavy drinker and was addicted to to drugs. He died at twenty nine, so young, but was the leading figure in moving country music int the mainstream of American culture. Hank, Sr. was a genius songwriter and singer, who was granted a citation for his achievements by the Pulitzer Prize Committee. Artists from every genre have recorded his songs from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones to Elvis and probably every country singer who ever picked up a mike. His catalog is deep and vast.
the line where he said ""they both tried to kill me in 1973". He is referring to when he was drunk and fell 500 ft off a ledge on a mountain. thats why he grew the beard. to cover the scars
"Hank, why do you drink?(to get drunk) Hank why do you roll smoke?(to get stoned), why must you live out the songs that you wrote?"(to get laid)...was the responses in the bars when this song came on!!🎶🎸 The best of times😁🎶
Hank Williams Sr. Was considered a country bluesman from Alabama and the original outlaw of country music ,his son JR. Took it to the next level ! Roll Tide Bocephus!
When Hank Jr was a kid his mom had him performing his dad's songs. She pushed him hard and wanted him to keep doing that even when he became a teenager and wanted to do his own thing. I think that's the basis behind the "I am very proud of my daddy's name. Although his kind of music and mine ain't exactly the same"
Hank Jr's mom and others raised him to be the spitting image of Hank Sr. He used to be clean and dapper, and perform his dad's songs. But then he kinda had a bit of an identity crisis, and broke away from it. A lot disliked him going his own way. That's partially eluded to in the line "lately some of my kinfolk (country singers) have disowned some other boys and me". During his identity crisis he ended up having an accident where he fell 500ft down the side of a mountain and busted his head open and nearly died. His song "All in Alabama" is a song about that event.. He then started wearing a beard and shades to cover up the scars from that accident.
Time to get down to Hank the 3rd now! Good ol' outlaw country, from his grandpa, down to his daddy, then now down to him he's raw. Hank III is awesome!
Hollywood, of course you heard Hank Jr. before. Ever watch Monday Night Football back in the day? ALL MY ROWDY FRIENDS ARE COMIN OVER! That's Hank Jr!! ✌❤
We almost lost Hank in 1973. He was so wasted he literally fell off a mountain ridge. Busted him up but good. His beard covers the scares. Listen to the song Tear in my beer. He & his dad are singing it.
Hank Sr. was a rag-tag kid who was already hitting the bottle when he learned to play and sing from a black street musician. He went on to become possibly the greatest country singer and songwriter ever before dying, as noted, at 29. Hank Sr. and Hank Jr. are definitely country. Speaking of which, you guys might enjoy the official video of Jr.'s song A Country Boy Can Survive.
18:05 Well, he does love him some blues. And I heard him say that Fatts Domino would come over and teach him things on the piano when he was little bitty. He has a bunch of great artists in his life from a very young age, because of how influential Hank Sr was, and the fact that Hank Sr passed when he was 3 years old.
Hank Williams Sr was like Elvis before Elvis. He just had that captivation, charisma, flashy suits, and nealy anything he put out was a hit.. Sucks that he died at the young age of 29, when Hank Jr was 3. Hank Sr. and Hank Jr are on my personal Mount Rushmore of favorite artists. Along with Alan Jackson and George Jones.. George Jones actually got to meet Hank Sr when he was 15 years old.
One of the most fun songs at wedding reception’s especially family weddings. I’m shocked that Hank was only 29 when he died. It was fun watching you guy’s enjoying the music 😁🥰
Country music serves much the same cultural purpose as blues. It is a voice of the common man expressing his worries, sorrows and joys. In the case of Country, it is centered on mostly rural or small town blue collar people rather than people in the cities. There are strong parallels. The country "sound" in addition to influences from rock and blues is also strongly influenced by Scots-Irish folk music because it came from areas heavily settled by that ethnic group. You will hear this most clearly in the related genre Bluegrass.
Sometimes when he sings it he will answer each of the questions, “To get drunk” “To get high” lol there’s a version with Kid Rock too. My favorite Hank song is Country Boy will Survive
when i was in college twenty some years ago, this song and "you never even called me by my name" by david allan coe would often be played back to back, and you could hear the patrons singing outside. a couple of times we were out in the alley smoking a joint and heard the crowd singing and we would power smoke so we could go back inside to sing along too.
I grew up on this because my dad is a huge Hank Jr fan and this song is one of mine and my sisters go to songs for partying cause it always reminds us of how we grew up! This was awesome!💜
You cannot beat Hank Jr., the guy is a bonafide country legend. I’d check out his sons music too (Hank III) as it has a unique rebel country/hillbilly rap sound
This song was played at every party in my college days (1980's). It was a call and response song that the drunker we got, the louder we yelled the answer. "Why do you drink? (To get drunk!) Why do you roll smoke? (To get stoned!)! Good times!
Great choice and great reaction. You guys brought up the Outlaw movement in country. Thats pretty much when country started adding more blues and rock elements compared to the older country music from say the 50s and 60s. When i think outlaws in country, Hank Jr, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash all fit that category, some of those artists i grew up on. And that outlaw sound helped make country more mainstream in the 80s and 90's.
Man I grew up on Hank Williams and Early 80's hip hop. What a great time it was for music when I was younger. You got exposed to all lanes and differences. The lines weren't so clearly cut as they seem to be today. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Love the channel man. Keep up the great content. 👍
I have literally listened Hank Jr my whole life as I am 51, seen him in concert 6 times, I have a love and appreciation of all genres of music, but he is my all time favorite, any genre! Love the reactions!
Years of back pain, alcoholism, and prescription drug abuse severely compromised Hank Williams Sr. health, and at the age of 29, Williams suffered from heart failure and died suddenly in the back seat of a car
Proper responses for a crowd to yell back: Why do you drink? TO GET DRUNK! Why do you roll smoke? TO GET HIGH/STONED! Why must you live out the songs that you wrote? TO GET LAID!
Guy says ‘I don’t think I know one song from Hank Williams Jr’ but I’m like did ya ever watch Monday Night Football? Hank sang intro song! Deep dive guys. ✌️
He fell 500 feet, landed on a rock face first and the doctors said it was more than they could do, he was left here for a reason. Johnny and June carter Cash was his godparents. He is one of the greatest country artist ever. Rigtht under his dad, Great reaction!
I would still have it in the country genre. Country isn't completely seperate from blues. There's often a lot of blues elements in country. Especially with Hank Jr's music after he decided to go his own direction. I would suggest Hank Jr's "Country Boy Can Survive". It's basically a country anthem, and probably his most well known song. I think it was released in the 80's, but the music video for it was made much later.. But I personally also recommend "All In Alabama" which is related to his 500ft fall off the side of the mountain.
He can play a dozen instruments, writes probably 90% of what he sings. Read his Wikipedia on his history. Amazing he is still alive. You guys are way cool
In my family musical talent hits every other generation. My Mom Aunt and uncle all were singers and musicians my cousins and other siblings can't carry a tune in a bucket but all of our kids can play and sing. My son taught himself how to play the piano at 7 or 8 and can play almost any instrument you put in front of him. My daughter is just as good.
awesome reaction guys. I hope you do more Hank Jr. His music is awesome...he has lots of stories to tell... A Country Boy Can Survive, Dinosaur, Whiskey Bent and Hell bound, All my rowdy friends are coming over tonight. among others. He also sang the Monday Night Football song from 1989 till 2011. he won the Entertainer of the Year award 5 times...He can play every instrument...when he came to Houston, he played the guitar, fiddle, piano, and bass....he puts on a great show for sure. Hollywood that was a steel guitar you were wondering about at 14:13
Country music had it's own little rat pack back in the 70's and 80's, and Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson, used to be all best friends and running buddies. The line in the beginning about they disowned some of the boys and me, that was a subtle shoutout to them.
I've met and seen him when I was a Lil tike l. In Hamilton Mt. Got so drunk out his foot through the pa system in local bar. 35 years later got to see him in Deadwood SD. Killer shit
Most of my family has a musical talent, except for my uncle Paul. He says, "I can't play an instrument, but I can play the hell outta the radio." 🤣 Merry Christmas, my friends. 🤘🎅🍻
Hey, dull knives are more dangerous than sharp :) My STL husband looked at me like I had 3 eyes when I refused to close a knife that he'd opened. I was raised in pretty much an epitome of A Country Boy Can Survive type of family. I love some Outlaw Country, but Hank Sr hurts my ears. Bocephus is Hank Jr's nickname (if you do the video for A Country Boy Can Survive.... its on his guitar) and the mountain accident caused significant skull/facial fractures he was *extremely* lucky to have lived through it.
Theres always going to be a blues influence in good country... also Hank Williams Sr. Was taught how to play guitar by blues artist Rufus Payne.. Rufus Payne met Hank Williams when Hank was eight years old, and legend has it that he would come around and play Hank's guitar, showing Hank how to improvise chords. His influence in exposing Williams to blues and other African American influences helped Williams successfully fuse hillbilly, folk and blues into his own unique style, which in turn expanded and exposed both white and black audiences to the differing sounds.
Hank Jr can play a ton of instruments.. There's an old video of him clean cut, performing Foggy Mountain Breakdown on the banjo. There's also a poor quality video of one of his concerts in which he goes through taking over every band member's instrument and playing it. From drums, bass, keys, and others.
Morning fellas! This is a good song! My stepdad who played country and bluegrass would play this one for us. Was Kool to see Hollywood get into it! Lol🤓❤️
It was a mountain in Montana where he crossed a ravine that gave way and he fell a long way and almost died , during his recovery he decided to play his own style of music and created some fantastic music.
it came to the point where there's audience participation on this song..... Hank: "Why do ya drink?" Audience: "To get drunk." Hank: "Why do you roll smoke?" Audience: "To get stoned." You mentioned Kid Rock.....he and hank do a duet of this song live!
The whole album is great. The title song, the pressure is on, is a beautiful blues. Country Boy can survive is country blues, Tennessee stud is a great bluegrass cover, and "all my rowdy friends have settled down"
Love Hank Jr, definitely worth going down that rabbit hole. Try Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, and there is a duet with Hank Sr, There's a Tear in my Beer
And the tradition goes on with Hank 3 who has been Fearless when it comes to the the genres he works with seemingly No Boundaries in mind. Extreme metal, hardcore, rap and Country all seemed just flow naturally through that dude
"Whiskey Bent And Hell Bound" continues the wild side story of Bocephus. "All My Rowdy Friends (Are Coming Over)" speaks to the partying - and a version was used for several seasons to introduce Monday Night Football. "All My Rowdy Friends (Are Slowing Down)" speaks to - not surprisingly - slowing down.
If you dig outlaw country, try Rebel Meets Rebel ... composed of 3/4 of Pantera and David Allen Coe. Metal meets country. "Cowboys Do More Dope" would be a great start.
Hank Williams sr was my dad fav country artist he's got great song like hey good looking, tear in my Beer , im si lonesome i could cry would be good songs to check out 🤟
His dad was known as the hillbilly Shakespeare. You need to listen to his dad's song I'm so lonesome I could cry. Elvis said it was the saddest song he ever heard.
I’m 50 and a metal head. But Hank Jr was my first concert. My Dad took me. I guess I was around 9 years old. Earl Thomas Conley opened. It was in Albany GA. I still have my ticket stub.
I saw Hank back in the early 80's and saw him just a few months ago, sounds just as good now as he did back then!!! You should also check out Hank Williams III. Kind of a country/rock/rap hybrid. Awesome stuff.
Gotta do "Country Boy Can Survive" by Junior now. Oh, and "All My Rowdy Friends..." as well! Do the music videos if you can. I think Hollywood would enjoy both. (Smokey probably already knows them. 😁)
I love how you looked so skeptical at first, and was 100% in at the end!!! It's one of those songs that can do it!! Thanks for doing this for guys, much love!!
Luckas this was a treat. Thank you so much for the delicious hot sauce and all your love and support on Patreon and Spiral Out Sundays. 🙏🙏🙏

Every wedding I’ve been to in Texas plays this towards the end and You Never Even called me by my name. The ultimate drunk singalong
That is a David Allen Coe song...not Hank Jr.

Came here to say this! Good times ...
Was waiting for someone to say this!!
Took the words right out of my mouth.
A Country Boy Can Survive.... HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
100s of better songs by Jr.
Hank Williams Sr. Was considered a country bluesman from Alabama and the original outlaw of country music ,his son JR. Took it to the next level ! Roll Tide Bocephus!
I would have never expected Rappers React to cover Hank Williams Jr. Awesome.
I sincerely know every Hank Jr. song by heart!! So happy to see you checking Hank out!! 😊
A Country Boy Can Survive. is a must
He actually almost died from falling off a cliff . A father and son found him and he still has a relationship with the two and family.
That is what he is referencing in the song when he says that women and Jim beam both tried to kill him in 1973.
Found him? Hank was with them when he fell. They knew each other and was on that hike, ram hunting, when it happened. Lol
@@susieh1141 What makes you think that? How are either of those things related to that accident?
He went to the mountains to clear his mind from a breakup and drank heavily.....that's where the women and Jim Beam come in. @@Gutslinger

“Whiskey bent and hell bound” is another great song by him.

i understand that he was found in the back of his car in Oak Hill WV
“Some slick’s tryin to give me friction” is top tier wordplay.
Hank Williams Sr. is what my mom calls "cryin' in your beer" country. Hank Jr. is my preference though.😊
My favorite Hank is Hank III,mix of Country, punk,Metal.rockabilly!!

Years of back pain, alcoholism, and prescription drug abuse severely compromised Hank Williams Sr. health, and at the age of 29, Williams suffered from heart failure and died suddenly in the back seat of a car
Note that the "prescription" was from a bogus "doctor" too.
He was heading for a show in Ohio.
Proper responses for a crowd to yell back:

Why do you roll smoke? TO GET HIGH/STONED!

Why do you drink? To get drunk. Why do you roll smoke? To get stoned.
I seen Hank in 80's with Skynard and in 90's with Kid Rock
Morning fellas! This is a good song! My stepdad who played country and bluegrass would play this one for us. Was Kool to see Hollywood get into it! Lol🤓❤️
It was a mountain in Montana where he crossed a ravine that gave way and he fell a long way and almost died , during his recovery he decided to play his own style of music and created some fantastic music.
it came to the point where there's audience participation on this song.....
Hank: "Why do ya drink?"
Audience: "To get drunk."
Hank: "Why do you roll smoke?"
Audience: "To get stoned."
You mentioned Kid Rock.....he and hank do a duet of this song live!
The whole album is great. The title song, the pressure is on, is a beautiful blues. Country Boy can survive is country blues, Tennessee stud is a great bluegrass cover, and "all my rowdy friends have settled down"
a good song is a good song. who cares what genre it is. if it moves ya...........it's perfect.
He fell off a mountain and almost died. Crazy.
Thanks for this. I know Hank Williams Sr. because my Dad listened to him. But I was unfamiliar with Hank Williams Jr. I’ll definitely listen to more.
Dude, love the maximum overdrive shirt.
Wow, this song is just as good while I'm sober(ish). Nice to finally find out🤘🏼😅
Country Boy can Survive
Is an Anthem that still rings true Today
If you dig outlaw country, try Rebel Meets Rebel ... composed of 3/4 of Pantera and David Allen Coe. Metal meets country. "Cowboys Do More Dope" would be a great start.
Yes, Smokey is correct about reopening the knife lol. We are superstitious here in WV also.
I saw HWJR three rimes in the '80s when he was the shit. Have several of his LPs too. 😎
I love you two!! ❤❤❤
🙏🙏🙏
Those of you watching this and reading comments... Music starts at 11:49
My favorite country artist and favorite song ! Happy holidays boyz !
I saw Hank back in the early 80's and saw him just a few months ago, sounds just as good now as he did back then!!! You should also check out Hank Williams III. Kind of a country/rock/rap hybrid. Awesome stuff.
Loved the reaction, fellas. You HAVE to check out Hank Jr's son, Hank 3. He's wilder than Jr.
I don't know much of Jr but I do know that song and it is a great one.🥃
Great tune.
Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound next!!
I bet you know the Monday night football song 😂😂👍👍
Gotta do "Country Boy Can Survive" by Junior now. Oh, and "All My Rowdy Friends..." as well! Do the music videos if you can. I think Hollywood would enjoy both. (Smokey probably already knows them. 😁)
OD’D in Denver is a great Hank song.
