A live version of this would be even better. The crowd tends to sing back to him. "Why do you drink?-to get drunk!" "Why do roll smoke?-to get stoned!" etc.
When Hank fell off a mountain in Montana and broke his face and nearly died he said when he finally woke up in the hospital the first face he saw was Johnny Cash by his bedside.
On a serious note...Back in 1975 Hank fell more than 500 feet off a mountain side in Montana. He endured 7 hours of surgery for injuries to his face and head, he's lucky to be alive.
Audience participation is this one is mandatory. "Why do you drink" - To get drunk! "Why do you roll smoke" - To get high! Why must you live out the songs that you wrote." - To get laid! LOL
Okay so. Please quit trying to put everybody in categories. Rock and roll and country and everything else. Because in the end of the day it's only their country or rock and roll. Lynyrd Skynyrd is southern rock but it is by God rock and roll and you could ask them if you don't believe me
OMG, SO many more great songs...Blues Man, OD'd In Denver, Dinosaur, Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, If Heaven Ain't Alot Like Dixe, The American Way!!! The list goes on and on!!🎉❤
I'm at the break part way through and I agree with everything you guys are saying, but I hope you realize there is an additional quite deep level of poignancy involved in this. His dad, who was iconic in early country music, drank himself to death by a fairly young age, and it cut a blossoming fantastic career short. At one point Hank senior was just writing songs on trains and showing up late to recording sessions and saying here it is, it's in the key of G boys! And they'd run through it a couple times and record it, and within a week or two it will become yet another charting hit. It was astounding. This is why this song has been played 8 billion times in bars and Juke joints all over the country. For so many years. It affects people strongly from different Generations, and there's just so much pain and sorrow in that family's experience. Everybody sings at the top of their lungs when this song comes on at the bar in a really hopping joint.
His song All my Rowdy Friends are Coming Over Tonight is a bit more of a southern rock sound it was also used for years as the theme song for Monday Night Football.
The best concert I ever went to was in 1983 in my Hometown of Wilmington. NC. It was during the Azelea Festival, the up and coming group Alabama was the Opening act for Hank Williams JR. I was working as a College Student Usher and I was just a few feet from the stage. Hank Williams JR explained the song. He was saying that he was proud of his dad, but he was different from his dad, He had started off his career singing his dads songs but he was singing his own music which was part of the Outlaw Country Genre. He was being criticized for his lifestyle and he was saying his dad had a similar reputation. Both Alabama and Hank Williams JR were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash were Hank William Jrs Godparents, Hank Williams Jr was mentored by Johnny Cash.
a violin has strings, a fiddle has straaangs. Born in to country royalty, after the mountain fall he said i'm done with that and i'm doing this. He is the man in my book, listen to anything from 1978-1989, pure gold. Had 9 albums on the charts at the same time kind of gold.
I saw Hank Jr in concert play his set and cover for the opening act who didn't make it becase of excessive partying after a show the night before. His band took a break and Hank sat in a chair with his bottle of Jim Beam on the floor and played a whole set solo. What a performer. His band came back on and they finnished the show. Best concert I've ever been to...
Tear In My Beer is a good Hank Jr song that also incorporated some previously recorded vocals from Hank Sr., so it would be a good one to give you a sense of what his dads musical style was.
You can imagine the struggle of having the name of his legendary father, and the unrealistic expectations people often projected onto him--especially after he decided on a music career.
When Jr started singing, he was singing his daddy's songs. I didn't care for it, but I loved his daddy when he originally sang them. When Jr changed and started singing his own music, I loved it. Some of that family tradition was the drinking and smoking like his daddy did. Have you checked out Sr's music.
Keep in mind the line with the 1973 vrs, was after he fell down the side of a mountain.. 👍 just trying to have some fun.. for me it's all about finding ones self, and excepting it. I think he did very well for himself in finding his place 👍
Hank has been my favorite country singer since 1965. I have seen his concerts many times over the years. I have had my pictures taken with him 22 different times. You have to watch one of his live in concert. song. Maybe try "My Name is Bocephus" He is quite a showman. Plays at least 8 different instruments.
Another example of what he’s talking about in family tradition where he says if I get stoned and sing all night long, it’s a family tradition his dad Hank Sr had a drug and alcohol problem
Must listen t Whiskey Bent and Hellbound and from his early album Feelin Better. My favorite country singer of all time. (followed by Waylon and Merle)
A country artist I feel you should do is Patty Loveless and her cover of "You'll Never Leave Harlen Alive". Patty is retired but was one of the best voices in country music. There's a video of her singing this while wearing a pale blue dress it is one of the best because she gives a little introduction to the song where she explains why she sings it from the heart. Patty is country as grits and cornbread. You should also do some of Hank Sr's songs, the songs are 70-75 years old but as popular today as they were in the 40s and 50s, Start off with "Hey Good Lookin'", "Lovesick Blues", "Jumbalaya", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", "Move It On Over". Maybe you'll understand why the hillbilly Shakespeare is considered the king of country and has never lost his crown. "
"All My Rowdy Friends" (are comin' over tonight) is another classic from "Bocephus". (Hank's nickname) You might remember the parody of he did for Monday Night Football.
I'm an old hippie rocker but my dad loved countrty music so it was played in the house the whole time I was growing up. I didn;t care for it much when I was a kid in the sixties but now I love listening to Hank Sr, and Loretta and all of those old country artists. I especially love Patsy Cline. She had one of the finest voices in any genre. "Crazy" is one of her best. Written by Willie Nelson who said, "I wrote it but it's Patsy's song".
You are very similar to me I am 73 and grew up in Alabama and Georgia listening to my parents country music and hated it back then because I was into hard rock and lots of blues but now over the years I grew to love most country music like both Hank Sr and Jr and like you stated Patsy Cline and Loretta.
You guys gotta keep perspective that this song was released 44 years ago; yes, you were right on point - he simply did NOT CARE that people didn't approve of his lifestyle and music style.
1973 hank was having woman issues and was drinking while mountain climbing. he slipped and fell a long distance and basically landed on his face. he spent years in reconstructive surgery. that is why he wears shades and a beard. he looked very different before that .
Try Buck Owens...I've Got a Tiger by the Tail. You want some twang and base line country? Oh, there's lots more. I'll think of some! I know you can't wait! Thanks for another great video...and God bless you!
Another great Hank, Jr. song about relating to his daddy is a duet with Waylon Jennings, "The Conversation". Hank, Sr. was born with Spinal Bifida and was in constant pain which he would self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, especially Morphine. When Hank, Jr. he was already having some substance abuse, but after he had his fall that others have mentioned, he got in that same lifestyle.
Go to any bar around here and play this and when he says “Hank why do you drink?” the whole place will stop mid conversation and yell “TO GET DRUNK!!” and then “ Why do you roll smoke?” and they yell “TO GET STONED!!” and go back to their conversation 😂 I’m sure it’s like that everywhere not in the city or coasts. Maybe it is I don’t know I’ve never been lol
Love your videos! You GOTTA do Hank Williams III! "Smoke & Wine" or " D*ck in Dixie" or "Rebel Within'! " You will not regret it! Thank you from Wisconsin 🙂
We all love Hank Jr. ...He is such a bad ass! But there is a softer side to Hank Jr. Please check out his song, THE LAST LOVE SONG. Please do the video. I know you like the studio first but the video is great. Hank is younger and just sitting on a stool singing. Hope you do it!!!
Definitely runs in the family. Hank Williams Sr was kicked out of the Grand ol oprey , junior was always on the outs. And Hank III comes around they lock the doors and hide !
Ole Bocephus started out doing covers of his father’s music in the early 60’s (carrying on the family tradition). But over time his sound and style of music started to change. Then after his fall down a mountain nearly killed him in 1975 he came back with more heavier southern rock sound that he really became known for
UA-cam has his life story Movie on it called Living Proof The Hank Williams JR Story it’s great to learn the pressure being the son of a Legend has with it
You can't go wrong with any Hank Williams Jr but if I had an opportunity to encourage you to listen to one song and it happens to be literally my favorite song by Hank Jr it would be the song dinosaur I wear the T-shirt
The live version of this song would have been a lot better! This is a song where the crowd gets involved in the song! This is what they call outlaw country! Y'all stay safe!
You should do a reaction of a young Elvis from the 50s and put him side by side almost with an older Elvis from the 70s and compare the evolution of his music and himself in general. Love the reactions keep it up
I rarely listen to Country music. But when I do, it'll be Hank Jr, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and only a couple others. This guy's vibe is so laid-back. And so unique. It's just his. For years I shot pool, billiards. And I rarely ever lost. I swear I give this guy much of the credit. Coz Hank was usually in the background on the jukebox. Fr. 🎱🍻🎶🔊💵 #funtimes
All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight...
Then they've all settled down.
A live version of this would be even better. The crowd tends to sing back to him. "Why do you drink?-to get drunk!" "Why do roll smoke?-to get stoned!" etc.
It is much better to “experience” this one…😊❤
M
Man, you beat me to it.
Nope, Hank live is not that great
@@jamestate5059 Saw him twice, first time was soooooo drunk it sucked, the second, going in with no expectations, he KICKED AZZ!
Outlaw country was by far the best country western music
“Some old slick’s tryin to give me friction” is genius level word play.
It sounds like 'for ection' even when played at a slower speed.
@@timcarr6401 it’s his accent.
@@cydrych I guess so.
The song that defines Country music for a lot (it is a part of the song) is David Allen Coe's You never call me by my name.
The perfect Country and Western song I hear.
It's fun...absolutely does not "define" country music...good grief. It's practically(is) a parody.
You know when they use a Steel Guitar and single it out like a solo that you are listening to REAL country music!!!!
Knowledge of country music history - especially Hank's - helps in appreciating this one.
Hank Sr. was no stranger to the bottle.
He was only 29 when he died on New Year's Day in 1953.
Medicine and Whisky bottles. He was hooked on morphine caused by back issues at birth and that is what killed him.
Audience participation is this one is mandatory. "Why do you drink" - To get drunk! "Why do you roll smoke" - To get high! Why must you live out the songs that you wrote." - To get laid! LOL
I remember this during my karaoke nights! 😂❤
Okay so. Please quit trying to put everybody in categories. Rock and roll and country and everything else. Because in the end of the day it's only their country or rock and roll. Lynyrd Skynyrd is southern rock but it is by God rock and roll and you could ask them if you don't believe me
OUTLAW COUNTRY
I always took this as the "family tradition" being substance abuse and hard living. He takes after his legendary dad.
Ole Hank Jr got so many good songs… Blues Man is a great one about Hank Sr and his late Wife RIP
OMG, SO many more great songs...Blues Man, OD'd In Denver, Dinosaur, Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, If Heaven Ain't Alot Like Dixe, The American Way!!! The list goes on and on!!🎉❤

🤠🍺
The song is best with audience participation
For the fun side of Hank try "All my Rowdy Friends"!
Or "Dinosaur."
His song All my Rowdy Friends are Coming Over Tonight is a bit more of a southern rock sound it was also used for years as the theme song for Monday Night Football.
Just watched him live at kid rock show and he performed this song! What a show he was, played about 6 to 8 diff instruments and crushed it🔥🌶🧡
This is the song that turned his career around, from his father's kid to a country superstar on his own.
Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound is another great Hank sing, you can also see him preform with his dad on There's a Tear in my Beer
All my rowdy friends is a must. 😁

Hank III-Crazed Country Rebel!!
This is a staple song in the rehab centers, in a lighthearted way

Hank Williams was one of the leaders of the outlaw country movement
