    Many people including me considering this boot so it was v interesting to see it put through its paces, and the deep dive into rocker appreciated and was especially thoughtful with regard to rock scrambling. A bit of sad memory here as yeserday i watched a utube review of a B2 boot by a usa reviewer in which he spent much of the video explaining he felt Scarpa had lost its way by including this rounded rigid sole and didnt understand why Scarpa would model its boot on a sports running shoe. It was not that he was concerned about a rigid but walking comfortable vs rigid vertical ice orientated boot, and he recognised both as valid orientations to choose from - rather he just had not heard of rocker. Thx for posting. JMO.

    Great video, I really enjoyed it. I am really pleased with my pair also. I took mine out again last weekend with no problems at all. Like you, I was deliberately standing in small streams and pools of water to check the water proofness, again with no problems. I used a heavyweight pair of Bridgedale socks along with a thin liner and my feet kept warm. However, I agree with you that these boots won't be as warm a heavier leather boots. Again, like you, my problem will be I like them so much that I'll be wearing them too often

    Lots of folk saying that the Ribelle are overkill, but imho, you wear what you find comfortable and what you can afford and so on. I’d have no issues wearing these boots to walk in the Lakes or The Cheviots if I had £250 spare. Yea they have the fittings for crampons, but if they’re comfortable, hard-wearing and waterproof, why not throw them on right?

    • @Fellmandave1
      @Fellmandave1  Рік тому +3

      Hi Adam, this walk was the wrong place to showcase them and I was scratching around for suitable terrain. But I just wanted to try them before going on rougher steeper ground. TBH I thought the video would attract minimal interest and I was doing it just for fun and to share.
      But, I have worn them a few times now on consequential ground where they did not feel like overkill at all!
      Ultimately if people have eyeballed the bright orange very mountaineering style boot and rolled their eyes, including in the context of this video, I don't give a flying fig. Truth is Adam, they feel a lot more easy going than they look!
      I do tend to like to trial lots of different types of footwear though from a professional perspective too.
      So yeah, why not! Cheers Adam.

    Hi Dave, Thanks for the deep dive into these boots. Did you swap out the laces after purchase? Trying these on they seemed to be very short, fine in the shop but on a cold wet hill needing to retie..? How have they been with crampons and did the rocker sole inhibit the fit to the baseplate? Am after B1/B2 3+ season boots and these are in the running alongside Scarpa SL Activ and Kento Tour Highs. Cheers J

    • @Fellmandave1
      @Fellmandave1  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi James, no swapping of laces.
      I have used them with crampons twice with no problem. Even the biggest stiffest boots have some degree of rocker and crampons are designed to work with this.
      I would just pick on fit. But if you are biased towards crampons, mountaineering and winter, the scarpa wont be as good, its just a hiking boot. Scarpa for easier stuff, Ribells for the rugged steeps.

      @@Fellmandave1 many 🙏🏼 thanks for the considered response. I had just not seen a sole like it before. In Essence I want an all condition boot excepting full winter use. So the go to boot has to be suitable for the shoulder seasons, take crampons for early/ unexpected ice, late compacted snow. But yes to the rounded lumps, rocky scrambles and peat hagged holes we can find ourselves in. Just trying to find the points of compromise btw the various options. Appreciate your vids and the time taken to share! J

    Very good review boots are the 1 area of my gear that I've struggled with the most over the years I've got short feet but extra wide forefoot with bunions on both feet the only boots i wear now are hanwag as they have a special bunion fit which is great giving more volume around the big toe joint

    Am looking to replace a pair of old Scarpa Manta M4's that I got off ebay several years ago. At 1200g each they are far too heavy for me these days, albeit in their day they were to go to boot for Scottish winter routes. I've worn them once on a trip up to the lead mines at Gunnerside in the Dales during a Snow storm (watch the video please ;-) ). To be honest I wasn't fit and between the winter pack loadout and the boots they destroyed me. Plenty warm, dry, and comfortable just too heavy. Having watched a number of videos (Yourself, Andrew Beavers and the Camping Astro man) I'm convinced that these lightweight technical boots are the way forward.

    • @Fellmandave1
      @Fellmandave1  Рік тому +1

      Cheers Andy. I do find them a bit cold compared to a good leather, but it's a good trade off. A decent gaiter helps. Thanks for your comment and enjoy your trips in the boots.

  • @AK-kn8xs

    Great review! Surprised to hear that La Sportiva runs tight for you while Scarpa is comfortable. I recently bought a Scarpa model (one of their fast hiking boots) & compared to my corresponding La Sportiva, the Scarpas run narrow in forefoot and have a lower volume. Maybe it differs from model to model!
    I’ve always wondered where to use the Ribelle exactly; the country you’ve tested it to my understanding is a low technical landscape and I would have used something like your Mammut and the Ribelle on a rather long days of trekking. So my question is- is the Ribelle an overkill for lesser technicals or for day-long treks? An unrelated to the video subject but I observed your Mammuts to be leather lined, so, is that recommend for drier weather or can it be used in wet/ if caught suddenly in a rain conditions? I’d like to believe that leather lining must be very comfortable.
    Thank you.

    • @Fellmandave1
      @Fellmandave1  2 роки тому +1

      Agree that the ribelle is better on more technical terrain, but the lightness is great. I have just got back from 5 days steep ground walking and scrambling in the Lake District and they were excellent..They do vary model to model plus it is about the proportions of your foot and your perception of comfort and support. My only misgivings about the ribelle is they feel cold to me compared to a leather boot. The mammuts are goretex so stay dry.

    • @sdemosi
      @sdemosi Рік тому

      The shape of the last is crucial. In general Scarpa is wider than La Sportiva but that doesn't apply to all boots. La Sportiva in my experience become wide farther up the toe box than Scarpa. So some wearers will find La Sportiva a better fit whereas they will slide around in Scarpa because they have unnecessary volume in the upper third of the boot.
      I like Scarpa but cannot wear most Mojitos as they are too narrow in the toe box for my plateau shaped foot. I wear Kalipe instead. Zodiacs, Ribelle and many other Scarpa boots are fine. Scarpa Vortex shoes are comfortable but the toe design has more volume centrally which isn't quite my foot shape so they're not quite as comfortable. All these shoes are notionally the same size but the fit is so different.
      Scarpa reference the last design on their product pages but there are so many of them it's nigh on impossible to compare.
      The reality is these technical boot manufacturers do not intend every boot to be great for every wearer. They have wide, medium and narrow fit variations. What is confusing about Scarpa is they produce radically different style boots in different fits. Unlike say Hanwag or Lowa that will do the same boot in a regular and wide fit. With Scarpa you need to try it on don't buy or send it back if it doesn't work. Chances are that model just wasn't made for you and you need to order something else.
      Mammut and Meindl are more consistent with their fits in my experience. Unfortunately Mammut doesn't quite work for me whereas Meindl almost always does.

    • @Fellmandave1
      @Fellmandave1  Рік тому +2

      @@sdemosi interesting observation. I am sure you will agree that with these technical boots fit is ever more important. When edging or smearing you don't want the foot to roll or slide inside the boot. This adds the extra dimension of as well as physical fit of the static foot, you want it to feel right dynamically. This means matching your foots stiffness, strength and experience.
      Lastly we all have a terrain Achilles heel where we want the boot to feel extra secure, be it an edge or slope, grass or rock. Lots of demands!
      It's an interesting subject and you really got me thinking. We tend to think of boots in terms of length and width, but really it's much more 3 dimensional than that. I have noticed too that with training shoes especially, that manufacturers are going for an increasingly 'sock like' fit, with an increasingly narrow waist at the foot arch. This means that if your foot does not match there it will squeeze or feel loose at either end.
      I have just bought some innovate R390, for which I had to spend quite a lot of time modifying different insoles to take out the feeling of my heel being compressed at the start of the foot arch. Anyway, I have some Scarpa mescalito mid on order so we will see!

    • @Fellmandave1
      @Fellmandave1  Рік тому

      Hi, yes, this was not the right terrain for them strictly speaking but just wanted to try them for comfort. I have used them a lot this summer particularly in the Lake District and found them excellent on steep ground. The truth is though is that they are so light and comfortable that they are good in easier terrain too.
