Why Keith Richards Hates Led Zeppelin
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 чер 2024
- Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones are two of the most important and influential groups to have ever made music. The Stones with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards helped define rock and roll. Whereas Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin introduced heavy rock and metal to the masses. Despite both being so impactful in their own way, Keith Richards doesn't quite see eye to eye with Led Zep. This documentary explores why!

Criticism from the second best guitarist in the Stones.
But the best riff making guitarist in the band
@@davidbuswa9425 : Mick Taylor and Brian Jones RIP.

When Page said he didn't listen to Clapton and Hendrix during Led Zeppelin's early days, I think he's avoiding more lawsuits than Led Zeppelin already faced. If Clapton or Hendrix criticized Zeppelin for ripping off old blues artists and not being original in some work, their opinions would carry a lot of weight. Led Zeppelin faced enough lawsuits already.
Everyone stole riffs.
I have a list of songs, some blatant that were lifted right from big names and the so called music historians which seems to be the new plague due to the You Tube uprising haven't even brought to light.
Nobody ever discusses the fact that during Jimmy’s days as studio musician he was asked by producers to lay down guitar tracks for the stones, the who, them, and others…without their consent. Jimmy also tried to start a band w Beck, Entwistle, and Moon in the early days of the Who.At least Moon admits Zep achieved so much more than the Who ever did…
Right, & also worth mentioning is it was Moon who once said the band would go down like a lead balloon, leading them to come up with Zeppelin & altering the spelling of lead.
I think not.
"At least Moon admits Zep achieved so much more than the Who ever did…" Achieved so much more what, record sales? Led Zep could never have done Tommy or Quadrophenia, Zep could only rip off the blues & other artists' riffs. And Plant's vocals are just bloody annoying, especially on the In Through The Out Door album. Townshend is an original writer. Page is a rip off artist. And Moon's & Entwistle's playing are a great deal more dynamic & unpredictable than Bonham & Jones.
@ericmalone3213 The Who doesn't equal a sweaty hair on Zep's ass. Stairway was the most requested radio song in history. The Who had a few good ones though.
@@SmokeyTreats SmokyTreats have rendered you aesthetically blinkered. Entwistle & Moon, just the two of 'em, blow Led Zep off the stage, & Plant's wretched vocals are more horrendous than ever. Stairway To Heaven is a song I will pay money not to have to hear. "Stairway was the most requested radio song in history" That makes Led Schlep the MacDonald's of rock music: Billions Badly Served.
Led Zeppelin never had the need to invite in a session guitarist to do a solo like Jimmy did multiple times for the Stones.

Cut out the part where Keith also said that Page was a great guitar player and that he loves his playing .
Heavy handed? Page had one of the cleanest guitar tones of the era.
Also never said he hated them . He said they didnt do it for him personally . Big differmce .
Good point. Clickbait in the title - "HATE" (sic).
It seems that Keith was asked about Led Zep, and gave a brief answer. That's not "hate".
Wasn't his "heavy handed" a reference to Zeppelin's sonic aesthetic in general, and not Page's guitar playing specifically?
He said Bonham is heavy handed, not jimmy page!
@@bluesque9687 this reminds me, my Mom always said "never be heavy handed when pickpocketing a mark or baptizing a baby"

Except with Ozzy, it usually sounded more like, "uhggh fwahtz aghhh ungh gwalzt! Eh?"
The Stones are a Rock n Roll band, LZ is a rock band.. that's the difference.
Jeez, I disagree, L Z do what they call their "Acoustic set", & its as good any any acoustic that you will ever hear, also a lot of their stuff is influenced by Jimmy, & Roberts love of the blues, i would say that they are the best band ever, no matter what genre of music that they put out, they are NOT just a rock band.
I think sometimes if you don't appreciate another artist's work, but they have reached the top of their genre, it's best for a noble silence, the classy response, not the crassy response that Richards came out with.
I love the Stones, I love Lez Zep, I love the Beatles, I love Pink Floyd, I don't see them in competition with each other, as the great one said, 'All you need is love'.
Why in Hell do some people put Pink Floyd with the other three? The "Big 4" includes "The Who".
@@danmccullough7825 Where do I say that this is the Big 4, I was not even counting, unlike you.
What is the 'Big 4', I have never heard of the phrase.
You are falling into the trap of competition, The Who are brilliant, and I don't see them in competition with anyone, while you clearly do.
Pete Townsend also said he hated Zeppelin's music, but at least he admitted that his hate was rooted in the pain that Zep became so much bigger than, The Who. Both Townsend and Richards are just salty because throughout the '60s their bands had been playing 2nd fiddle to The Beatles, and right as The Beatles were breaking up, leaving an empty throne for one of them to inherit, out of nowhere this juggernaut of a band with a hard rock sound the likes of which no one had ever heard before shot up and seized the throne, knocking Abbey Road out of the top spot in the charts in '69, and never looking back as they ruled the rock 'n roll world for the next decade.
100% correct Sir, Zeppelin albums throughout the 70's outsold the Stones albums 3-1, that was confirmed in the early 80's by Ahmet Ertegun, the Atlantic Records President.

Absolute correct. It is called jealousy.
It looks to me like Keith Richard saw Led Zeppelin as a threat to their popularity. I am saying this as Led Zeppelin fan. Never really got into the Stones. It is kind of like in the company setting when a insecure manager sees a subordinate that is talented, then manager will do things and say things to keep the subordinate down. Pathetic.
50 years later the Stones are still making music and touring. Who has Led Zepplin ripped off lately? They are two completely different bands with two completely different approaches to music. Have loved them both since about 1970.
@lisareitzel7501 The Rolling Stones never had a irreplaceable drummer like John Henry Bonham either there's the real reason for Led Zeppelin pulling the plug on making more successful albums sellout concerts and millions. After Bonham died so did Led Zeppelin sadly otherwise they would of been making heavier rock music that would of been something special.
As far as the Rolling Stones, I think their best music was when they had Mick Taylor in the band from 69-74. Keith has came up with some great riffs but he couldn't match the sound of Mick.
Keith stnds alone with his riffs and song writing.
I agree with Keith..but I also think that Keith and the Stones were a little surprised in 1975 when led zep overtook them and became the biggest group. Love them both if I'm honest !!
He obviously felt threatened, because let's be honest, both the Stones and Keith himself weren't doing all that well by the mid 70s ("I wasn't doing too good but I was feeling real well") . In hindsight, they had nothing to worry about but put yourself in his shoes at the time.. I'd be afraid as well. Both for the continuity of the band and my own health.
I don't know what to think about the fact that he still stands by that opinion though. On the one hand, I'd say give it a rest, on the other: I don't know of a band that's been accused of plagiarism as much as Led Zep, so mayyybe that kind of plays into it as well.
On another note: Keith is my hero, but without Mick, they would have never been as successful. He was always pushing to put in something that was 'hip' at the time. Now that resulted in some duds, but it also brought some great songs that in the grand scheme, it kept them growing and evolving. Perfect yin and yang.
Keith loves ACDC , Powerage. Angus and Malcom, played on stage with them.
I'm yet to know someone who hates Bon Scott era AC/DC,especially Powerage
Envy only envy, Led is the modern band, Stones are a pop blues revival. Both great band indeed.
I respect Richards' opinion and he's certainly entitled to it. I don't share it. I also appreciate it for being straightforward, and not insulting. The "heavy handed" makes me think Zep was just too heavy for him. I wish they were a bit heavier, but there are other bands for that. I don't mean this to be snarky, but his crack about Plant's singing is my view of Mick Jagger. I never liked Jagger as a singer or performer. His whole persona just irritates me. Stones music never did much for me. Again, I'm not saying that to be snarky. It's just always been my take. And that's why I'm cool with Richards having those feelings. But I can come together with Richards on his view of Oasis. I found them obnoxious within the first 15 seconds of hearing Wonderwall.
His comment here that "Keith's opinion (about Zep) did not reflect the majority" makes no sense. What majority? Yes they sold tons of albums, but what about all the consumers who heard them and rejected them. He has not data about this, so his comment is a bit silly.
Notice how no one mentioned their dislike of Hendrix?
The Rolling Stones never claimed to write the blues songs they covered, Zep claimed they were their songs. For many yrs people didn't know those riffs were stolen from the original blues guys. 18 law suits
Mick hates Zeppelin too , during star star live ,Mick changed the words to ' jimmy page is all the rage,I can not see the reason why
i think it’s Robert Plant’s voice he doesn’t like
Led Zeppelin? THE BEST hard rockin' blues cover band of all time! Led Zep III is a masterpiece, really.
Hats Off To (Keith) Richards
Rhythm player says what?
I can't read Townsend or Keith's minds, but I believe that they genuinely didn't care much for Led Zeppelin's music. Not much more complicated than that. Of course acknowledging the technical prowess of individuals in a band does not mean that one would like their music which Music Mongoose seems to be implying. Case in point; Emerson , Lake and Palmer are undisputedly great musicians but I am not a fan of their music. Same goes for King Crimson and many others.
Also, the video is misleading. Richards does complement Bonham's drumming and that is in the interview and it stops there. But Richard's follows by saying that Bonham was heavy handed , that's where the Led comes in. Music Mongoose left that out. I personally love the Who and the Rolling Stones but don't like Zeppelin and I've tried.
How come most of this video is some guy repeatedly paraphrasing the plain, clear moderate observations of other musos?
Aahhh, I get it.... He's just focussed on _himself._

Short answer.
Who cares what he thinks
Page had (back then) a "relationship" with a 13 or 14 year old girl!
How sympathic is that?
Todays there is a big chance for him to get caught on Tcap with Chris Hansen....

There are probably 1000s of Rock and Roll players in that category. Ted Nuggent even sang about it. Jailbait. Ted liked them young.
it was envy as well. He hated being 2nd place, and Certainly the Stones were 2nd place to Zep in the 70's.

Well Adam for me as I grew up I was more impressed with the style of Led Zeppelin had it over the raw output of the Stones and although Keith is great particularly some of his riffs Jimmy certainly had more style. As for Oasis I thought they were just a load of posers and they could not even sing properly and their off stage antics well it speaks for itself eh?

The Stones got hit in the head when Zeppelin came to life and he was afraid to admit Zeppelin was right up there with the Stones, the Who, and other top groups no doubt
Keith will be Keith, I always thought he was a bit jealous of Mick Taylor's raw talent as a guitarist, but its not surprising musicians like everyone else have opinions. I always wished Steve Marriott of Humble Pie would have been the vocalist for Led Zeppelin like Page wanted originally, but Plant turned out okay I guess. LOL.

Agreed. I, honestly don't think the Stones wrote some of their biggest numbers. Page and Plant clearly knicked stuff from other artists but always made it their own. The Stones were good but only great here and there. Jimmy was, and is great, always and forever. Keith, apart from the Stones, was nothing. His solo stuff is sh*t. Jimmy went on to do The Firm, a fantastic solo album, Coverdale Page, which was phenomenal and underrated, reunited with Plant for a reworking of their greatest songs, took the Black Crowes next level and remains the sweetest, most lovely little British country gentleman you'd ever want to meet. I’ve heard the same thing from Jimmy Page when talking about the Beatles. In one interview he said their earlier work up until Magical Mystery Tour was nothing to write home about. I thought he was crazy and came across as a bit jealous of the Beatles as well. I guess every musician feels some sort of envy towards others bigger than themselves.
Jimmy and Zeppelin were not influenced by The Beatles, certainly not the period of their music he dismissed. Each of the 4 members of Zep were all about American Blues, they had no interest in bubble gum pop like, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand".
@@Cosmo-Kramer i think you didn’t read my comment. When did i say Led Zeppelin were influenced by the Beatles? Now that i think about it , in a roundabout sort of way they were influenced by the Beatles. Maybe not musically but in writing your own material which after the Beatles it was a must for all rock bands to do. In having creative control over one’s own music and how it should be presented was also something the Beatles pushed for when recording their albums and finally AOR/ concept albums were basically started with the Beatles, songs like stairway to heaven and bohemian rhapsody are traced directly to a day in the life. World domination and taking rock from clubs to stadiums yeah, the Beatles influenced everyone in that respect. Let’s go back to my original statement tho, i said Page sounded a bit envious of them and i can understand why. When it comes to rock bands, the Beatles are known as the greatest , most influential and most successful rock band of all time, something led zeppelin are not. Not saying they are not a great band, i love Led Zeppelin but they are not known as the greatest rock band of all time tho, that title belongs to the Beatles. Bubblegum pop? You need to listen to their entire discography my dude, you might learn something.
@@itslikethesamebutdifferent8020 I never said you said they were influenced by them. I was explaining to you why Jimmy sounded dismissive of The Beatles earlier works, because they were not his cup of tea, he and his bandmates were all about American Blues. So it wasn't jealousy, it was a matter of taste. As for The Beatles catalog, and am familiar with it front to back. And yes, much of their early original work was bubblegum pop. And actually, Led Zeppelin is known as the greatest rock band of all time. Page was rock's greatest guitarist, Bonham its greatest drummer, Jones its greatest bassist, and Plant its greatest singer. Other than Lennon being rock's greatest singer during The Beatles era, the same cannot be said about any of the other Beatles regarding their abilities. As musicians, they were each pedestrian. And live, they were weak. Even Lennon and Harrison admitted that they fell apart as live band once they started recording, and that they were at their peak as a live band from August of '60 when they arrived in Hamburg and gelled like never before behind new drummer Pete Best's Atom Beat, to August of '62 when they got signed by Parlophone and replaced the most popular Beatle, Pete Best, with Ringo. You should do your homework before posting on subjects you know little to nothing about.
'Revolver' changed music, now if Page had started off with 'Revolver' rather than the 'Mystery Tour,' I might just have listened, in my view, 'Help/Rubber Soul' marked the end of the old Beatles, and contains their best of traditional style music, the Help title track, Norwegian Wood and Hide Your Love Away, being the standouts, but Revolver was special, the rest, as they say, is history.
@@garylake1676 Jimmy likely would agree with you, that it was a turning point (for the better), but he's allowed to think that MMT was when they really "were on to something". Also, imagine how Jimmy (and Robert) felt being asked what they thought of The Beatles in every friggin' interview, it must've gotten tiresome and annoying. So any detection of a dismissive tone from them on The Fab Four, could very well be a result of the fatigue from hearing the question over and over and over again.

Ritchie, in a fairly recent televised interview, had nothing but accolades for Page. Ritchie said that the very first time he ever saw Page play, he knew he'd become a superstar.
Page wipes the floor with Blackmore, in regards to guitar playing, its not even close.
Jimmy Page is not a great guitarist. He's a good enough guitarist. If you listen to the bootlegs of him trying to improvise, it's just a mess. Enthusiastic fans, who are not guitar players, who don't know a damned thing abouit music theory, will try to argue. But, they don't have musical knowledge, they have ego, and their sense of that they enjoy (No a hamburger is not the same as French cuisine, just because you like it.) Led Zepplin's formula was to have Jimmy Page play some repetitious lick or small chord progression and have Robert Plant scream something over the top of it. There was no sense of melody (try singing Whole Lotta love, by yourself with no accompanyment. That'll tell you how much melody there is in that song. They try singing Michelle, with no accompanyment. That'll tell you how rich, that song is compared to Led Zepplin's stuff.) Pete Townsend, Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Keith Richards, and several critics, all agreed that Led Zepplin's stuff was pretty damned mediocre. They were not wrong. Led Zepplin's stuff lacks melodic content. It's overly repetitious. The drumming is an overdone, heavy handed, tasteless mess. These men were not wrong in critisizing Led Zepplin. They were spot on. The red neck guys, who can only identify a beat, rely on repetition, and have little sense of musicality, were the guys catered to by Led Zepplin. It basically was music for white trash guys. (PS: Richards is not a top musician. He plays basic stuff, but it creative with that realm. You want a top musician, go listen to Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, Jimmy Bruno, Just because someone sells records doesn't mean that they are great. Look at all of the crap rap stuff that sells. Decades later he said in a video interview he admired Page's work in Zeppelin along with Bonham's.
Come off it Keith! I love The Stones, but there is no getting around it, technically and in terms of musicianship, Led Zeppelin would blow The Stones off the stage. Led Zeppelin were virtuoso musicians- only Mick Taylor and Charlie Watts merited that accolade.
I really like Keith, he's a huge talent, a GREAT song writer, and a likeable bloke- but he's *WRONG* about Led Zep!
It`s called Jealousy friends. Simple
Nahh... I don't really like either much but can say the Stones are much more musical. Zeppelin is simpler... simply Wagnerian in nature. For the Stones you listen to the albums and go to the shows for entertainment. Zeppelin is mostly about tribalism.
I never really got into The Rolling Stones. But I liked some Led Zeppelin songs. Stones where not at the level of zeppelin. Stones was more pop in my opinion. Zeppelin was a bridge into what was becoming metal. More talented musicians showing their skills. Keith could have never played the type of music Led Zeppelin was playing.
Who does it think he is Jimmy Page kicked his
Keith Richards play what instrument in the Stones? Everyone knows and has seen the magic fly off Jimmy Page's fingers!
Live Aid😂😂😂😂
Led Zeppelin is superior in every category as a band. I have never been a Stones fan because it is kiddie music. Richard’s could never cut heads with Page.
The Rolling Stones were self indulgent, arrogant, and overrated.
Led Zep always was a third rate band.
