Small note, the main problem with running windows on a microsd card is not the raw speeds, but the amount of reads/writes it does on the drive. Sd cards are prone to wearing down due to heavy utilization, and running an os really tests it.
Samsung and Sandisk have "high endurance" SD cards for heavy write purposes, only downsides is that they tend not to be the fastest cards on the market (your mileage may vary)
Not only that but Steam OS uses Ext4 like any other Linux distro, and that is faster in some cases than NTFS, besides the fact that it is hard to get data fragmentation
"and running an os really tests it" Yeah, and linux is particularly well suited here, as it's highly customizable. For example, you can tell Linux not to write changes to disk immediately, but rather to cache them in memory and write them periodically. This of course has the danger of data loss in the case of an unexpected power outage, but on the Steam Deck which is battery powered this should be no issue.
Why I loaded mine onto my 1 tb internal. I upgraded the SSD, partitioned for windows and just dual boot. Idk why sooo many folks were pushing SD card. I thought that was crazy.

SteamOS is not proprietary people have already taken the code for it and made a pseudo steamos that you can install on any System since you can't do that with the official one as of now. I'm enjoying your Steam Deck coverage, but it's a little frustrating since it has a lot of either outdated, or slightly wrong information. 1. You can install "Windows To Go" on an SD card and dual boot like that, instead of having both OSs on the same drive. 2. You can use external GPUs on Steam OS, as long as they are not Nvidia, Windows is not needed. 3. You can listen to Spotify on gaming mode. Just add the Spotify client or a web browser as a non-steam program, and open it within gaming mode.
@@couchman-sw6jy Yeah, but when you want to use the Deck as it's supposed to be used, you have to change everything again. Then your SSD is still outside the Deck because you couldn't use as usual. The M.2 slot was taken of course. That's just too much of a hassle.

FYI regarding your comment on Win10 on a MicroSD, I actually did exactly what you're talking about and setup a 2nd 1TB MicroSD card with Win10 on it. I'm using it solely to run GamePass games. It works pretty flawlessly actually, best method is to use Rufus to do an actual pre-install of Windows, to the card, then boot to it directly from the Deck's bootloader option. That way the Windows install process won't totally break the bootloader for the Steam Deck during install, as it's already installed to the card and just needs to run through first time setup at that point. The Deck does bog quite a bit upon first boot, as does any windows machine... windows defender plus updates equals slow time central especially since MicroSD cards don't agree with Microsoft's hardcore fetish for constant random writes. But once defender finishes it's thing and all your updates are installed, it actually works pretty well at running GamePass games. The only caveat I've found is that Windows UWP games don't do a great job of recognizing the Deck's controller, especially the sticks off the bat. I found a 3rd-party utility however that allows you to add individual UWP apps/games to allow the controller to passthrough correctly. So basically you have to manually whitelist each gamepass game in that manner, but after that controller support works fine.
I don't know if it's intentional or not but your little commercial you did reminded me of the commercials on rick and morty interdimensional cable lol.
Here is a suggestion. Try to get a NAS drive working on it from another computer. That way you can add a lot of storage without swapping Micro SD cards. It should work well with roms and steam games that aren't too large. Might be worth testing the limits as I'm sure Wi-Fi and larger games might be a issue.
This will probably work just fine on desktop mode connected to a dock with wherever, but I don't think the nas drive will show up in game mode unfortunately.
You mentioned the inability to have a music app in the background if you're playing in gaming mode, but I've been able to run two games at once in gaming mode. So it should just be a matter of adding your spotify or web browser as a non-steam app and launching both the music app and a game while in gaming mode. When you're running two games or apps at once, I think you can switch between them via the steam button menu, it just shows two app names at the top of the menu. It shows a warning when you're about to launch two games at once, suggesting that you close the other game first.
I really appreciate this steam deck coverage and I hope you keep it up. You've been one of my favorites which UA-camrs and now you're one of my favorite theme deck UA-camrs

I'm excited for the steam deck to give people that opportunity. Also having the screen on the controller makes gyro feel a little more natural as well.
@@Ticktok_of_Oz yeah for me it's one of the strongest part of the stream deck since most other consoles has almost no controller configuration. 8bitdo is good too. Wish it would be possible to do macros on steam deck. Like choosing how long time between each subcommand when you have several subcommand after each other, otherwise it's flawless
Just want to say that i really enjoy the lighting and the feel of your videos. Always looks clean and cool. Also, loved the satisfye ad
U can use Spotify while gaming by just adding Spotify as a non steam game launching it, chose ur favorite song. Then pressing the home button head over to ur library to launch ur favorite game. If u wanne change song u can just pres the home button en head over to Spotify. Works seamlessly. I wish they could add a quick shortcut tho to skip or rewind a track.
That sponsor ad was so good I had to watch it twice. Love it so much
This versatility this thing gives you is just amazing. This is a console that we can use for many years to come.
SteamOS is not proprietary people have already taken the code for it and made a pseudo steamos that you can install on any System since you can't do that with the official one as of now.
You can listen to Spotify and play games, you need to get the desktop app from the Discovery Store when on the desktop mode. Then added as a non-steam game, then when back in game mode launch it hit play on whatever music you want and hit the steam button and switch back to the library and logic gate they will both run. This works with Discord and other apps hope this helps
The promo was indicative of interdimensional cable. Just fantastic!
Really happy you corrected the information you put in your initial review.
That Satisfye ad read had full commitment behind it. Thank you, Bob, for being so entertaining!
6:53 You can also use the QAM (3 dots) button instead of the steam button for these shortcuts - it’s a little easier than awkwardly adjusting your grip
that satisfye ad was like, Rick & Morty + Wulff Den, LOVE IT
I love how many things you should be able to fix on your own. So much better and more consumer friendly than other game companies!
That is the point of Linux brother. If you want to fix it, go right ahead.
@@CyberDruga hahahahaha bro stop just stop youre cracking me up. Going through these comments seeing you act like this is a W for linux.
This is valves effort and community, not linux. All one needs to do is engage with any of the popular distros to see how god awful desktop linux community is. Stay in your fucking hole.
@@xenn4985 wow, your opinion is worthless. Keep it up
@@CyberDruga Not as worthless as linux desktop though, so I'm sitting comfortably.
Hey maybe next year will be the one, lmao.
@@xenn4985 cool
Absolutely love the music choice for the intro and the Rick and Morty skit for the ad. Lmao
EMUDeck is fairly easy to use. It will import your roms/iso as a non steam game and attach it to a category with the appropriate console. It can also load emulation station as a stand alone app for all your retroarch titles.
Just got my steamdeck, downloaded emudeck, but I cant find where to download games and how and where to put them. 😅 do you have a link or something to help me ?
@@allexiaforget7373I think Retro Game Corps has a guide out for set up. As for game files, I use my own ISOs/Roms from games I own. Finding games online is difficult because it's like downloading copyrighted films. Best of luck with your hunt on the high seas mate.
@@greenprotag oooooh okay! Thank you!
You absolutely can launch programs like Discord or Spotify while in-game, just set them up as non-steam games and once your actual game is running, hit the steam button and launch them from your library. Yes, the deck can multitask in game mode!
Also, you can use the Steam Deck as a bluetooth audio skink for your phone and play whatever audio you want on your phone through your Steam Deck.
The Satisfye add is perfect. 10/10 content
I think Vince Offer would be proud of the ad spot... very nice!
Had to pause and comment after the satisfye ad. It was amazing. Thank you.
The soft pokemon center music is so nostalgic
Yoooo shoutout to Bob listening to Polkadot Stingray! Awesome band!
The Steam Deck is a masterpiece mine arrived the other day. All I'm doing is playing Elden Ring and I'm 100% happy and there's SO MUCH more to do with it.
Mine arrives this coming week, I'm psyched :D
The jank counter near the end is very funny. Good informative video
Satisfye. First "in-video" advert I didn't want to skip 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the useful information. Also, I liked the sponsor bit.
first time ever I just loved the "ad" in the video. awesome job!!
seeing bob have a noita game makes me smile. that game is dope and punishing
That’s a nice looking fight pad, Bob!
I gotta say the sponsors parts of wulff den are the only sponsor clips i watch all over youtube. you guys put so much love into this shit it might throw a baby at some point. peter mckinnon, snazzylabs, linus can all get rekt in comparison.
Windows on an SD is horrific
@@lolcat I agree, I just wrote it on my comment because he mentions on the video wanting to put windows on an SD card.
What do you mean with external GPUs?
Oh, are you talking about the M.2 slot? Really? I wouldn't count that. It's way too unpractical!
@@Deinorius you could easily use it at your desk
@@couchman-sw6jy Yeah, but when you want to use the Deck as it's supposed to be used, you have to change everything again.
Then your SSD is still outside the Deck because you couldn't use as usual. The M.2 slot was taken of course. That's just too much of a hassle.
Love the junk food micro in the beginning!
This Ad was amazing. Please protect Wulff at all costs. Lol
The only channel where I can't skip sponsored content, as much as I want to 😂
love how he committed to dropping that on his face
You saved my life with the Steam+Joystick trick to use the mouse cursor. The trackpad was giving me a headache lol
I’m glad to see him warming up to Steam Deck. I want one so bad.
I usually skip through ads, but wow you made it entertaining enough to sit through by just continuing to lean into it. Fantastic work.
I hate ads! But, you really made it entertaining and funny!
Well done!👍
I can confirm dual 1440p screens just pluggin them out of the box. I have two Dell U2719DC monitors, the deck can connect to them using the USB-C input on the monitor and the monitors link togheter using DP ports. The deck can handle them correctly with no issues.
Love your ads, man! And thanks for the regular content as well! 😀
3:10 Glad to see Wulff is still the unhinged "MAYRIO MAKER" maniac I first saw on SpawnWave's channel.
ive watched many videos of you my man but today....today I realized you have the same voice when excited as the character snipes on rocka-doodle.
I literally just finished one of your other steam deck videos. Good timing.
Interdimensional cable commercials are the best!
I've never smile and laugh to a sponsored ad in a youtube video until this one. Great as always, Bobu-san!
God man, you just never fucking miss with these ads lmao. Makes me wish I could be as goofy in videos, but I don't exactly have the means to do so (yet). Awesome video man!
I am enjoying connecting my SD to a projector via HDMI. Having the projector near my gaming PC (in my study) was never very convenient. Now I can quickly set up a portable projector anywhere and use the SD as a controller for big screen gaming.
That was by far, the best sponsored ad break I've ever seen. I can't stop laughing.
8:20 you can actually add spotify as a non-steam game and have it running in the background whilst you play other games
you can add a lot of systems to RetroArch by adding the cores manually (steam has a short list of them), also add the info files if you want to have functional save states in added emulators
Dude your add read is epic !
Just got mine and looking forward to messing w it. Thanks for the video wulf
Great Stuff, as always!
Ah yes. The shamwow energy for the ad, love it
Steam deck is 99% open source, that is the reason for the high compatibility with controllers , docks etc. It is also the reason HoloISO is possible
The ad was such a trip
8:46 Iol I thought he was going to say "And this is what the steam deck microphone sounds like."
Add the Spotify client or chrome as a non-steam game and you can listen to music while gaming
This might be the reason I make a NAS machine. Been trying to find a reason to set one up for my use-case.
This will probably work just fine on desktop mode connected to a dock with wherever, but I don't think the nas drive will show up in game mode unfortunately.
@@Ticktok_of_Oz That might be true. We'll have to wait till someone tries it.
@@Ticktok_of_Oz you should be able to make a symbolic link to nas storage folder
It's really fun watch Nintendo UA-camr/fanboy gush about a freak'n Linux device.
That promo was the best, most Rick and Morty / 90s style promo I’ve ever seen
I personally believe Gabe and company struck gold with the Steam Deck. I pre ordered the original 512gb LCD and just recently upgraded to the OLED and man, what a versatile handheld. From PS5, Xbox remote play and streaming, to emulation, to it working with other launchers(with some tinkering). Im 100% sold on it.
Correction: SteamOS isn't proprietary since it based on arch linux which means SteamOS will/is open source or they are violating the license of arch linux
Steam client itself is proprietary tho
@@hylianchampion7713 the steam client is an app in the OS though not part of the OS itself
@@edrelaquino7041 yeah ik just wanted to point that out
@@edrelaquino7041 honestly tho as a long time arch user i wish they had some kind of dev mode where you can use pacman and the aur without changes being overwritten every update
