TRAP SHOOTING BASICS Improving your Score ROGER PACE
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лют 2016
- In this video we look at the equipment we need and a routine that we need to develop and be able to do consistently 25 times over 25 targets. We look at what to do to improve the efficiency of our second shot at the target. Visual hold and gun hold are revisited as are chokes and consistent gun mount. Types of shooting glasses and shooting vests are discussed.
We look at the importance of focus and concentration and a few other things in order to improve our scores. Thank You ROGER PACE - Спорт
I really like how you keep it simple. These are important aspects but you deliver it in a simple manner. Keep up the good work.
What you are saying is very simple but extremely important if we understand deeply.
I could add one point: when you aim tell your self that I am going to hit the target.
Ayman...and your point is very true and very important...good on you...stay well.
Absolutely Amazing video.!! I shot 50 clays with a borrowed gun. 23/25, 18/25. I was hooked !
The next week, I researched and bought a Browning Citori XT. I then had it fitted with a Gracoil stock. I then shot 25 clays. 21/25. The next week I shot 50 clays. 19/25, 18/25.
Your video has pointed me in the right direction. SLOW DOWN ! Concentrate !
SEE THE BIRD< SHOOT THE BIRD ! I have only fired 225 clays. BUT, watching your video has given me the points to move forward. At age 67, I am not into competition. I am into having fun.
Thank you for a VERY informative video. JJP
seabee...with those scores...you will soon want to compete...good on you!
I'm 'freshman', joined the club this year, shot about 1500 rounds and can appreciate a concise, logical, to the point guidance.
There is so many bloggers on the NET, and experts on the shooting range dispensing misleading and confusing information that can screw up you game leading to errors difficult to eradicate.
I watched the newer clip about the usefulness of the middle bead in trap gun before, and it was part of the 'epiphany' I had about POA, POI, repeatable mount. That 'revelation' came after intelligent and knowledgeable comments like yours and using geometry, and made me understand that if a gun is fitted to the shooter who mastered a repeatable and solid mount, the beads are not necessary at ALL!. For the purity of that 'science' I'd love to shave them off, but as a practical man I'll keep them as I know my mount ma change overtime for different reasons. Thank you Mr. Pace and keep educating, would add some simple (geometrical) sketches to additionally illustrate your sage advise. p.s. Impressed by the honesty of your score graph :)
Kaz
Kaz...much appreciated...and I'm glad it helped!!!
I too am a beginner and your comments are consistent with my instructor’s. I am actually rewatching videos to make sure I get your points, reenforce the lesson and am able to recall at practice. Thanks
See bird, shoot bird. Nice distillation of the essence of trap shooting, the “keep it simple” principle. When I overthink, I miss. When I let instinct happen, I break the clay.
George...you got it!!!!!!!!!
Roger.... love the flip chart! Read and hear.. great way to learn and remember. You covered the basics in a way i will not forger. see bird... shoot bird is playing in my head on a continuous loop!
Mike Mary R...glad to be of service...yep..."PULL>>>SEE BIRD>>>SHOOT BIRD>>>BOOM!!! Good to hear from you...stay well and Happy Shooting...Roger
Excelente consejos. Instructores como tu deberia de haber en todas partes.
Gracias por compartir sus conocimiemtos con nosotros los principiantes.
You are very welcome!!!
Thank you. Keeping it simple is great advice. Don’t overthink. Consistent correct mount, don’t look at gun, see bird, shoot bird, smoke puff.
Good on you ,David!!!
Thanks, I'm a beginner and its good to have even the obvious points spelled out
Turbo...glad the videos were helpful...need to re-watch them myself after my scores in very windy conditions yesterday...stay well...Roger
Great basic instruction for a beginner to grasp and develop consistent habits. Very helpful!!!
AA shooters are freaks of nature. Usually your best teachers aren't the best shooters, but they know how it works better than the exceptional do. Thanks for being a great teacher!
Shane...you are very welcome and yes they are freaks...i dont know how they can maintain a 97% average...my mate tells me i'm a pretend A grader...at the moment i'm shooting B grade scores...I've been in a few A grade shoot offs but i havent been able to win one yet...stay well!
Thank you very much! I was so engrossed in watching this video, I'd pay money to take a class with you teaching. I hope to find more videos like this on your channel!
Rick...good on you and thanks...Stay well
Thank for the uploads...I've just had my first have a go day at tge local shooting ground....14 out of 25 ,...loved it , glasses started to steam up which broke my concentration, stopping non the less , great experience....Will put into practice what you just uploaded....continued success..baz ..cardiff ..UK
Good on you and 14/25 on a first try is a great result !!!
What a great tutorial. I am right handed, left eye dominant. I have been shooting with left eye closed for most of my life. I have recently started shooting both eyes open after a bungee cord took most of my vision from my right eye. After joining the summer fun trap league I have learned a new sight picture, and picking up the birds much faster, and a much slower move to the target. I thank you sir for the great advice. Shoot more, shoot more often.
Bob...sorry to hear about your accident... everything you mention above is correct and spot on.. Thank you for watching......much appreciated...stay well and happy shooting !!!
makes a lot of sense. easier said than done. as they say practice makes perfect. a very good video
Roger, kudos to you! Your DTL series packs a lot of information into short, manageable tidbits that are easy to understand and follow. You have singlehandedly my rekindled my interest in trap (and the Beretta 687). Thank you, Patrick
Patrick...that's good to hear...good on you and thanks!
Excellent video. Short snd right to the point.
Thanks Roger for the great advice, from a beginning trap shooter in Wisconsin USA.
Thanks Scott...much appreciated...stay well and happy shooting !!!
Hey, I really like this video. I took an very brief introduction course a few months ago. I really enjoyed myself and finally went out and bought and over/under. This video was spot on with what my instructors taught and was a fantastic reminder for someone so very new. I am so excited to get out there!
Jessica...thank you so much for your comments...especially about the instructors saying the same things...stay well and happy shooting...good on you!
Thank you for stressing the importance of gun mount!
Good on you and thanks for watching !!!
Cheers. Just starting out and your lesson is just what i need. Clear and strait forward.
Good on you and happy shooting!
Great video Roger! I've just started to trap shoot recently too, I appreciate your straightforward and no nonsense approach. I bring my 13 year old son with me and we're both averaging around 16/25. He watched your video with me and took some solid points too. He especially picked up on your "expect to improve" remark, it's his new mantra.Cheers mate!
Roscoe...thank you for your comments...it gives me the motivation to keep doing the videos...16/25 is a good foundation to work from...improvement does come with each month that passes...my son is 40 and he doesn't even know whether he shoots left handed or right...we're going away on holidays in a couple of months and there's a gun club in the town so he's looking forward to learning about clay shooting...stay well and good luck to you both...Roger
Thanks Roger, great stuff.
You are very welcome...stay well and thanks!!!
Bravo! Fantastic training thank you!
Thank you too! Stay well and thanks for watching !!!
Roger, great series of videos! Thank you.
Barry...you are very welcome and thanks!!!
Nicely done! Thank you Roger.
You are very welcome...much appreciated!
Great video! Very practical with everyday language. All the main topics are covered head-on and in a way which makes sense. The bit about being serious made me smile! I know what you mean. It’s so easy to faff around and not really concentrate. It takes a lot more stillness of mind than normal to shoot consistently well. I imagine that I’m focused when on the line, but friends tell me I’m fidgeting like crazy and completely inconsistent!
Ollie...very well said...I like the phrase..."stillness of mind"...good on you and stay well!
Hey Roger. Just signed up at marconi club shooting trap. My first 3 rounds i was shooting less than 50%. I watched this tutorial and next two rounds i shot a 19, then a 21. Very helpful advice! cheers
banjo...good on you ...I really am glad that you feel the video helped ...stay well and thank you!
Thank you sir for explaining proper way. Will follow this and ill improve.
Best wishes and Merry Christmas!!
Great vid Roger. I have sent this along to a few of my friends who are just starting out.
This video is exactly what I was looking for. Very good explanations for a beginner. Thanks a lot!
David...you are most welcome!
Great and perfectly clear !!! cheers from Argentina !
Marcos...good to hear from you...cheers from Australia...it is 42 degrees celsius today...hope it's a bit cooler in (don't cry for me) Argentina...stay well my friend and happy shooting!
I’m an American, new to trap. I enjoy your videos, you’re easy to understand and to the point. I’m looking forward to going out again. I’ve not been twice, may last outing I worked on keeping my mount, keeping the butt on my shoulder. My first outing, I didn’t and ended up with a bruised bicep
Russ good on you and thanks for watching ...much appreciated...stay well and happy shooting !!!
Thanks Roger. As a beginner it helps to have these great points to concentrate on.
Tory...good on you!
These have been super helpful to me and my shooting. I've gone from 16-18 average per night to 22-24 per night per round. Thank you! (P.S. The glasses helped a lot!)

Thank You Roger
Roger, great video! You give great advice.i don't shoot too often but I am saving this video to review before I go out. I think I will go more often now that I am retired. Thanks
Sparkey...good to hear from you...what better way to enjoy retirement than to go out and break a few clays...stay well and happy shooting...Roger
Thanks for the tips Roger. I'm going to apply this to my shooting and hope for some improvement...

I first started to watch and then was going to move on but then you grab me with the gun hold and visual hold great information and I am looking forward to putting this to the test and practice. thank you
Good on you ...and "SEE BIRD>>>SHOOT BIRD"...Stay well...Roger
Thanks for this video. What was most helpful for me, was when you said. hold the gun so all you can see is the bead and not the flat of the barrel. That was a duaaa! moment for me. Before I could always see the top of the barrel. Thanks.
Good on you Glenn...and thanks for taking the time to comment...Roger
Great straight up advice!
Thanks graham...stay well...Roger

I am new . Thanks for the instructions. Good video.
Glad it was helpful!
Appreciate your video for its simple but important steps. I went to trap range for first time last week. My first 25 I hit 20; my secong 25 I hit 17. I felt some fatigue toward the end of second round and it showed in my score. Can't wait to get back to range.
Gilbert...congratulations...they are good first up scores... happy shooting!
Darn good video, Lotta thanks.
and thanks to you for watching it.
Really good video .
Glad you liked it! Thank you for watching...stay well!!!
Great video. It helped me think of the things I was doing wrong. I'm a new shooter (really new)and I'm having trouble getting past 21 breaks. So I will be sure to work on my hold, hesitation, mount and concentrate with every shot. Also the graph is a great idea as well.
Good on you Thomas ...and thanks for the comments...stay well...Roger

Hi Roger. I'm a new shooter and found the video useful and interesting. Cheers
Martyn...good to hear from you ...and glad it was useful...stay well...Roger
Helpful tips, and greetings from across the pond. I just started shooting trap, and already have a decent 11-87 semi, so I'll stick with it for the time being. Agree on your o/u preference, though, for a gun used specifically for trap. All the best!
RJ9 thank you for your comments across the pond...enjoy shooting trap and stay well...Roger
Great Video I am a Skeet shooter but starting out on DTL so all this is helpful .My 1st try at DLT was 22 then 21 so as you say Expect to improve and just like skeet you have to CONCENTRATE on Every one of the 25 Clays and yes Good Shooting Glass's are an essential part just as good tools for any workman/ sportsman/women once you have all the tools its down to you and you only .Keep the videos coming
Aidan...good to hear from you...21 and 22 first up is very good...and ...as I keep getting told...if you can shoot a 22...you can shoot a 25...like you say it's concentration...good on you and stay well. At the club we joke about the skeet shooters ...we say they've come over from the dark side to the light... DTL
Aidan...what is the town that you've got on your channel...it looks great
Roger,
Thank you for your very informative basic trap lesson. Somewhat hard to break years of rifle training muscle memory to check the sight alignment.
I appreciate that you used the KISS method (keep it simple stupid). Much easier for us crayon eaters to follow. FYI my personal favorite is crimson red but don't try telling them soldier boys that. They swear by Army green.
Cheers!
Good on you Pete...thanks for watching!!!
Good straight forward facts.
Thank you Robert...much appreciated...stay well...Roger
Sounds about right. Great video sir. Liked and Subscribed
Victor...good on you...and thank you!
Nice slow speech no mumbling as a relatively new shooter even I know if you can't grasp the basics you won't be any good and the straw tip on one of your other videos worked very well much appreciated
Eric...thank you and good on you!
great video well done mate.
Nick...thank you...much appreciated!
for me that I've never shoot any trap skeet or sport clays yet look greate video.
I'm a fan of yours. You taught me the importance of gun fit. Use the straw you said. Keep both eyes open, something I have to keep telling myself to do. See the bird. shoot he bird, something I don't do. I let it go too far. I use the wrong choke. Improved Cyl and Modified.
Maybe I should go back to bowling. lol
That's not gonna happen.
Even with the wrong chokes I am hitting the clays in practice and I might hit 10 in a row and then miss the next six.
So, not to bore you, I have realized that I am losing my gun fit as I shoot.
Thus for missing.
OK Roger...the next time I go out and practice, I will concentrate on keeping the gun on my cheek and shooting the clay that seems to go so slow for my friends and so fast for me.
It takes a while but you will get there especially now you know what chokes to put in...Happy new year!
Thank you Roger. This is by far the best video I've watched for the early stage of clay shooting that I'm at. I find at the range I get so much advice from different range officers I don't know what to do. I love this advice and going through the flip chart is fantastic! See the bird, shoot the bird. I think I will invest in some of those glasses too as I often struggle to see the clay at times. I have only been clay shooting twice (normally I target shoot with my rifles) but my son bought me a shot gun for my bday. On my last try, I got 8 from 21. I physically could not hold the gun any longer, closing the barrel was also a difficulty that I faced after about 11 clays. I need to build up some muscle memory. I also like your advice about focussing on one thing at a time. I try to remember everything and not really building my skills on any. Thank you and I will keep practicing. ps: May I ask what country your from?
Tracy good to hear from you...thank you for the comments...I am from South Australia...stay well...Roger
Trap is still a bit of an art form but like anything else, practice, practice, practice. I very much enjoyed your video. I very much like the clear and concise steps and points. I am new to trap but what I have done I have really enjoyed. More fun than shooting paper. Haha. I took notes and I'm going to do as you said and work on one thing at a time. Consistent mounting and the bead are most of my troubles. So I have a plan of action now.
Thanks for the video!
NebulaM57...good to hear from you...stick to the plan that you have made...it takes between 6-12 mths for everything to fall into place...but at some time during that period everything will suddenly click and you'll be shooting good consistent scores...I look forward to hearing from you when that happens ...and it will happen...stay well...Roger
Great jobThanks
thomas...thank you!
Very nice and thank you for taking the time to explain it or i better said to put it in black and white , thank you very much
Orlando...its my pleasure...glad the videos were useful...Stay well...Roger
thank you very much very good tips to do the job better...I am Sean Silva from SRI LANKA
Sean Silva...you are very welcome...happy shooting in sri lanka!
I went out and bought a Mossberg 500 pump action 28" barrel. First time up I shot a 9 , 2nd time up I shot a 16, and third time up I shot a 15. Not bad for a first time with my new rifle. Your station visuals came in handy. I need to look at the clay more and not hesitate as much.
+traud1969 good on you those scores first time up are good ...consistent gun mount is important... those videos are made up from the advice that the guys at the club give me...scores in the twenties are not far away...see bird ...shoot bird...best wishes...roger
Traud ...how's your shooting been going...cheers...Roger
