King's Quest I, also known as Quest for the Crown in the later releases, is the flagship series of Sierra On-Line, who would become royalty for the point 'n' click graphic adventure genre in the eighties and nineties, competing for the crown with LucasFilm Games. The original 1984 game featured the hero, Sir Graham, as he ventured on a quest given to him by King Edward, to find the lost treasures of Daventry and bring them home. This included a magic mirror that sees the future, a magic chest full of ever-lasting gold, and a magic shield that grants the user with invincibility. Throughout his quest, Graham faces wolves, witches, ogres and even a giant, all standing in the way of his quest. Roberta Williams designed this game to be replayable for IBM's PC Junior release as well, so there are several solutions to many of the puzzles. The design of King's Quest would go on to inspire others creating games for the genre, including Ron Gilbert's Monkey Island series, which I have covered extensively here on Scarfulhu.

Since a few people have asked - the missing points from this playthrough were from the gnome puzzle I believe. There's a max of 5 points allocated to that, and you get 1 deducted with every incorrect answer. Because I illustrated 2 wrong answers, I'm missing 2 points at the end.

The KQI death theme has long lived in my head. Even now, I can't really sing a funeral dirge without breaking into that cheery vaudevillian ending.

Every time there's an adventure game UA-camr that covers the _original_ King's Quest, I'm always shocked, lol. It's always one of those things you just assume was covered already! At this point, I'm nostalgic for _watching other people play through it._ It made me want to stop the game I was currently playing and - since I don't have King's Quest handy - find an adventure game to play and solve these kinds of puzzles. Currently playing the Journey Down Chapter 2 now and I think I'll fire up the OneShortEye video on King's Quest speedrun history now that I'm in the adventurin' mood. Thanks for another great vid, Scarfulhu!

One thing I always liked better about the SCI remake is how, not only is the gnome's name puzzle easier, but the beanstalk is significantly easier to climb too. After all, if you do the work to solve the puzzle, you should be rewarded for it, not punished.

It's like he was based on a Nicolodian cartoon like Dudley Do-Right or Mr. Magoo, or one of the early Rankin Bass cartoons - funny that in 10 years they emulate Disney instead of bringing it back to this style.

I was born months prior to this, and though I tinkered excessively around with King's Quest 2-4, and played all of 5-7, I never played this until the VGA remake, and then in 2011 I went back to play all the originals on an apple IIgs emulator (for the extra music and sound effects). KQ1 is clunky, but what a amazing new thing it must have been in 1984, I was totally engrossed with that engine (slightly refined) playing Black Cauldron, Space Quest and King's Quest 3. Adventure were positively arcade lite in those days with avoiding random monsters, speed typing that doesn't pause, and in the first game Sir Graham can even duck and jump - I miss that sort of thing from modern design.
I'd say the puzzle design was significantly fairer then some later Sierra titles (KQ2, LSL2, kq4), though the dwarf can screw over your game and not tell you, but for everything else there's generally another way around it. Just delightful.

We had a PCJr and this game, and it blew my 4 year old mind. Previously we had played text-based adventures like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game and some Atari at my grandma's, so King's Quest was insanely good at the time-- both visually, and the level of interaction.
Nowadays of course, I don't have the patience for this sort of game, but back in the day it couldn't be beat! We also figured everything out without the tipline, EXCEPT for that damn Rumplestiltskin puzzle (I don't actually know if my dad called it, but one day he suddenly had the answer written down on a piece of paper so I think it's safe to say he called them).
However, there was an awful bug in our original PCJr version of the game!
If you went and talked to the King to begin the game (as the game instructs you to do), then winning the game becomes impossible later on. I assume it was a bug but perhaps it was another insanely obtuse puzzle to overcome, but you could do everything you're meant to do in the game and bring the King the treasures BUT you'd get no response from the game when you try to give them to him. The only way around this is to start the game all the way over and make sure not to talk to the King at the start of the adventure.
That PCJr broke after a year and we didn't have another computer for a decade, but my dad would bring his work computer home sometimes and we'd play this and other Sierra games. Roberta Williams was a big name at our house since we loved King's Quest so much.

It's interesting to see how much of this original entry would carry on throughout the series; the focus on using your wits over violence. The whimsical fantasy setting that combines fairytales, mythology, folklore and mediaeval romance. The cheeky sense of humor. Graham's stellar fashion sense.

Heh first got around to watch this now, than you so much for a walk through so I could get a true sense of the game.
And I REALLY hope you get to review Kings Quest 2015.
I have NO idea how or why that game didn't get anymore attention and isn't ever mentioned. It was my introduction to Kings Quest, I just happened to pick it up on sale... And I swear to god. That fifth chapter, it's the only time EVER I spend half an hour of gaming just crying my eyes out.
I knew exactly where the game was going, and it hurt my soul, and I cried. I had grown so attached to Graham with the first four chapters that it really worked, I got to witness his dang life.
And also... BRILLAINT way to utilize the genre of point and click to depict dementia. That was genius! How you walk out of frame, then come back, and things has changed. Because Graham remembers it differently, and some things are now just blank white cause he doesn't remember.
And he starts talking about other people, characters who were part of his life but we never met in the game because he didn't find the time to talk about them, but he is running out of time and forgetting, and he can NEVER depict his life exactly the way it was, only tell this story.
It was just.... So god damn brilliant... And I am a woman, so I am allowed to cry real tears... I did though. I actually did.

Yeah, I've always thought it was sad that Sierra didn't realize how smart IBM was, pushing them to make KQ1 more replayable and more accessible to adventure game newcomers. After this, they almost immediately went back to completely linear moon-logic games, with only a few titles (and the Quest for Glory series) ever dabbling in more open design.
BTW, this wasn't the only remake Sierra did. Space Quest 1, Police Quest 1, Leisure Suit Larry 1, and Quest For Glory 1 all got official remakes after this one. However, none of them did particularly well in terms of sales, and fan reaction was mixed too.

You don't just need Frodo's ring to defeat the giant. If you got the shield first, the giant can't hurt you. If you have the fairy godmother's blessing active, the giant also can't hurt you. And if you're really good, Graham can just keep running away from the giant until he gets sleepy. I think the Giant is actually the puzzle with the most possible solutions. Also if you check your fingers after encountering the big rat, you'll get a funny easter egg. Oh, also AGD Interactive isn't Adventure Game Developers Interactive, it's Anonymous Game Developers Interactive. Which is weird, because Chris Warren and Brittney Brimhall are no longer anonymous. Anyway, AGD Interactive's King's Quest 1 is good, but not very good-- beyond adding VGA graphics and a point and click interface, it is just a verbatim remake of the 1990 SCI remake. But then, in 2002, their remake of King's Quest II totally overhauled things to make the story much more coherent, and even tied together the sequels in a more consistent way, 15 years before The Odd Gentlemen tried to do it (and actually, I was disappointed by the Odd Gentlemen's remake after playing AGDI's King's Quest II, because The Odd Gentlemen didn't include the three headed dragon or Graham's heart attack and basically retconned the second half of KQ3 and the entirity of KQ4 out of existence). Also AGDI's King's Quest III remake is very well made, and they had plans for more games (an SCI KQ4 remake, a point and click KQ8 remake, and an original King's Quest 9 were all planned) but they have since shifted to making original adventure games since those are more profitable and don't lead to angry letters from lawyers.

    • @JStryker47

'tis a shame. I would've loved to see AGDI's KQIV remake. UnicornTales' is still in the works, though progress has been much slower than we'd prefer.
And yeah, I did my best to enjoy TOG's game, but it was very disappointing how Alexander just burst into the castle while Rosella was still there and the kingdom was in no danger - instead of rescuing her and saving the kingdom. And that the events of KQIV were pretty much entirely erased. I really think it would've been better if they could've had Alexander tell the events of KQIII to Gwen and Gart, and follow that up with Rosella telling them the events of KQIV on the following day.

I found it amusing the article criticizing the SCI version said King's Quest I: VGA when it was still EGA as Sierra games were still EGA, until KQV.

I'm thinking (whenever I get around to 'em) that I'm gonna do the originals first, then eventually do a separate video talking about each remake.
