- I've had a few requests to show how to set privacy codes into the Midland GXT1000 two way radios. Menu navigation is a bit dated but once you see it done, its not too bad. Let me know down below if you use "privacy channels".

This is what a youtube explanation video should be like. Straight to the point and everything that had to be said was said! Thank you man!
thanks
@@donalderickson-si8ww Thanks for the clarification!
Yes, I use this exact model and a Gigantic Thank You !, and For this extremely well done video! I had purchased these back in 2021 and watched this same video to set them up. They " were" mainly used around the property here as my wife is a disabled service connected Air Force Veteran and if I'm out of the room ( I'm her caregiver as well) its much faster and more efficient than a cell phone. I had to re - buy them 2 weeks ago as our home burned down and we needed the same devices as we had before the fire. ( not a pity party) I got my wife out, first my throwing her over my shoulder and then went back into to get our dogs. The greatest takeaway is preservation of lives, mainly hers and the two dogs. It ( the fire) happened at 12:45 am on 31 July. We were asleep at the time. We woke to a raging fire in the back part of the house, spread quickly to the attic. At that point is when we woke to 3 small explosions and the rear French doors' glass breaking. Initially I thought someone was breaking only to be horrified of the ceiling beginning to fall in. Firemen and women here in Chandler, Arizona did a fantastic job of containing the fire and prevented it from going unto our neighbors property.
Love your channel !
Excellent, informative and very interesting.
Big Time Regards from Arizona !
I've had mine for a few years now and always wanted to know how to set it to so called privacy and how that worked. I figured it was not totally private but it does help to know how to set it up so the other party can connect with you. Thank you for the straightforward explanation.
Thanks! Mine are the Midland T50's, and just NOW removing from the CHARGER. This instructional vid is precisely what we needed. Our primary purpose of these T50's is BugOuts, and Campouts. This saved a LOT of combing through Midland's Manual. We appreciate you, sir!
Thanks for keeping this at an easy to understand level, quick and to the point. I just picked up the same radio in camo version, and was curious what those two functions did. You explained it well. Appreciate that
Thanks
Thanks. Analog squelch and digital squelch. I'll be setting up on DCS for our hunt. Fun stuff. I have the Midland Basecamp XT511 hand crank and several GTX1000g handhelds. Got my fcc license and call sign. Having blast with it.
Thanks for sharing and the clarification. I knew it wasn't really private, so I couldn't see the value. But you gave good explanation of how it can help, basically killing g background chatter for my team.
yes for sure. thanks for checking out the vid
Thank you very much. This is the only video that I could understand of all the others on how these devices are used. Very good explanation.
I'm glad it helped. Midland has some archaic menus in my opinion. They could use a software update to their radios.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout Thanks for your video and kind answer. Regards
Cool and helpful for newcomers to Midland GXT1000. Thanks!
your welcome
Thank you for this info. I am using this for my elderly Dad to be able to call on me for help (On the other side of the house where I might not hear him.) I've been hearing strangers talk on the channel. I was wondering what was going on.
Good simple how to. I’ve used privacy codes on consumer radios but new to GMRS.
Thanks for sharing your expertise with us!
BTW, your instructions also work for the LXT630AP Models!
If you wouldn't mind, would you mind explaining what the Pros/Cons of Digital and Analogue are?
Thanks ✌️
Thanks for sharing. Got for Christmas to use when backing our trailer into a camping spot from the driver to the watch of obstacles. Haven’t used yet but hoping this will work for communication.
Should work good for that.
Good video and explanation. I find the use of "privacy" codes frustrating. I hear people talk and they never respond due to the use of these codes. There is a possibility that occasionally they are out of range but not when the signal strength is high.
One of the advantages of these radios is being able to communicate if you need help, privacy codes negate that useful advantage. As far as the channels above 22, they are just the same channels as the first 22 with codes "baked in".
Good points
Not to mention all the people you are stepping on using that frequency without codes. Don't know why they don't just code the TX too.
Thanks for making this video! Very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Those radios are great when Hunting Bigfoot! BOBO approved
Sounds Squatchy to me
Danm thank you man pretty sure this is gonna fix my issue been such a headache
awesome
Excellent video for the extra help👍 These are excellent radios,, You could also use a 5 alkaline batteries if need be backup.. DC charger for car excellent, thank you ....
Great tip!
AWESOME! Thank you brother....
You bet!
Another cool video. I have a question-how often do you use your radios and for what purposes. I'd like some for fun, but seems like celphone coverage had improved so much in a lot of rural areas. Just a curious question. Thanks.
Well, camping but 2020 was a bust for us. Even the campsites were closed from Covid or highly restricted for some reason. I also have fun with my kids around the neighborhood. Its a nice backup as well for neighborhood communications if cell towers did go down. Which has never happened to me yet. lol
Great informative video. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Great to hear!
Still a great video , for MIDLAND RANGE 5 mile Radius .
Can two radios using the same privacy channel, but one is set to dcs and the other is ctcss, communicate with each other?
This is really helpful. Is there any way to actually go, "private" or not be where you broadcast to all. Will be on the trail with some buddies in a pretty popular area and will be using our radios. Would you just recommend, scanning until you find a channel that seems pretty quiet and then setup there?
no true private with these radios. Try and find a clear channel.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout to ask, when you say these radios, are there others where you could have more private convos ?
@@regnirps5075 I'm not sure if your questions are a troll on me but GMRS coded messages are not permitted by the FCC. Can you find radios out there that have that capability to be programed? I'm sure you can. I don't have a list. www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/chapter-I/subchapter-D/part-95/subpart-E
@@TheRealCobraBurnout Nope, not a troll, just really new to this and learning about what these things can/can't do so I am informed, thanks again for your help.
Thanks for the simple explanation, much appreciated. Just picked up a couple GXT1000’s. So this makes me wonder: if I have privacy codes set, which I now know “filters out” other traffic… doesn’t that mean i could very likely be talking over folks on the same channel who aren’t using codes?
Always a possibility I suppose.
Yes.
Awsome thanks just ordered some using them for camping will be fun (:
I'm in south east Louisiana and I'm doing alot of research on these , we have alot of hurricanes and tend to lose our cell towers I think this is perfect to keep in touch with family....can this be done using more than two?
yes
Are these radios repeater compatible?
Do all radios have privacy codes? My Midland will cannot be Rx'd by my neighbor's BaoFeng, nor can I hear her TXs. She says her radios don't have "privacy codes" ( interference codes).
We have a pair of rechargeable Midland x-talker walkie talkies. We use them to communicate with my mom who lives right behind us. that way if there is an emergency she doesn't have to dial the phone she just picks up the walkie. Sometimes we can hear people on the channel, not exactly hearing what they say, but we would like to choose a channel that is less used. Do you have any idea what would be the least used channels on a walkie-talkie? She has the exact same set of 2 walkies.
No way to to guess. We just check that a channel is clear before transmitting but sometimes people step on your transmission still.
I have these radios. I’m having trouble getting them to communicate with a different set of UHF radios(PXTON) for some reason. Do you have any idea how I can fix this issue? Thank you for the knowledge.
I don't have any info on PXTON radios but in general make sure both radios are on the same frequency and all privacy type settings are off. Midland has extra "channels" preprogrammed. Here is a link with various frequency charts. wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/FRS/GMRS_combined_channel_chart
I am interested in GMRS now! How do I go about getting licensed and how expensive is it?
I just bought 2 of these Midlands. I love using privacy codes. On my Cobra walkie talkies , when privacy codes are set on the Cobra radios, someone not using a privacy code still cannot hear someone using a privacy code. Are you sure on the midlands someone not using a privacy code will still hear someone using a privacy code? I will need to test them I guess, but be sure to test at some distance, if in the same room, yes I can imagine that they would hear. Anyway, thanks for the video, I will test that for sure, I hope they would not hear anyway.
Hi. Yes, for these Midland radios, they can hear you if tuned to the same channel (frequency) and have their privacy code set to off.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout Hi, Yes, I tried it after seeing your video. I thought I had tested them before and did not hear it. But sure enough just like you demonstrated, yes indeed a GMRS radio on the same channel but no privacy code set can hear the radio with the privacy code set. Thanks for your info video, I learn a lot from these.
THANKS.... I don't think I will need the Privacy Codes... Love my Midland GXT1000
I dropped on of my three in the water and now it give me a low batter message when I know the battery is charged. Any known fixes for this? A reset? I know it's the walkie vs the battery..
How is the battery life on these? I heard many negative reviews of terrible battery life, others have emphasis on adequate battery life. None of the individuals specified "bad battery life" on AA's, or the included rechargeables.
I have been wanting these for a while, but have high expectations of a radio with brief moderate use regarding battery.
Battery life on any handheld will vary with how much you are using it.
Mine also ... Bro. But i replaced the genuine batteries with 4 aaa rechargeable Duracell 1.2v DC finally got multiples of milliamps .... 💪
@@ahmadaswad3652 will your rechargeable batteries charge while in the radio on the base, or do you have to take them out to charge them?
Awesome. Now what is all the other stuff for?
We re planning a family road trip, 3 cars and we will be using 3 of these radios while on the open road, is there a recommended channel and code that we should use or does it not really matter. Will just be using them to notify of reststops or possible problems.
Any tips is appreciated from any one
The radios will limit the power to the FRS channels. So less range potentially. But technically to use the "higher" power GMRS channels you need a license. Also terran can have some effect if hills or mountains obstruct line of sight. This is probably why CBs are still popular on road travels.
Hello my friend. my Midland GTx 1000 radio. when I call the acronym RX Pops up he always understands .noise can help me solve this problem
Thanks for posting 👍
No problem 👍
The group codes settings are the same way anyone can still hear you but you don't hear them unless they have the same radio set to the same group code's
I got it now.🤘 thank you.
woot
Is this the same way if u had 2 radios already and tgen bought 2 extra ones. Would this method allow u to communicate wit the other two
yes
Can the privacy codes be turned off, so they will talk with older 2-way radios without privacy codes?
yes
Good share and instructions....Good stuff...
Thanks!
Cobra, That’s interesting if I ever find myself using a pair of I know what to do.
Stay ready, stay frosty
Can you demonstrate how to synced with another (brand ie: Rugged radio) two-way radio. Please and thanks
I'm not able to do that logistically
Nice brother. I do not use them much but are hunting club runs them. God Bless Brother..
groovy
very well done
thanks
Also do we need a license to use these on our road trip?
midlandusa.com/pages/faqs "It depends. The FRS (Family Radio Service) radio channels (8-14) do not require you to purchase a license. An FCC license is, however, required for use of GMRS channels. To apply for a GMRS license, please visit the FCC website and fill out the application. A license is not required to purchase a radio with GMRS channels on it, however."
@@TheRealCobraBurnout ok we are good to use the Midland gxt 1000 without a license as long as we stay between channels 8 through 14?
@@DH-fc2os I'm not a lawyer so maybe getting a second opinion would be good.
Which channel/ code channels is best for long distance. Do the radios need to be set up close to each other, or say can someone 10 miles away set the same channels on their radio and they should connect? We have the midland GXT, I have the 1000 and my friend has 1050. They are supposed to have 36 mile range, obvious perfect conditions. We tried the same regular channel, without any privacy channels and they did not work. The instructions say be on a GMRS only channel. Do you know what those channels are?

Awesome 👏
thanks
one of my radios displays the lock symbol. what does that do and how do i cancel it
Sounds like the Key Lock Mode is on. This disables the all the radio buttons except for the PTT and CALL in order to avoid accidentally changing the radio settings. To turn the Key lock off, press the LOCK button for 2 seconds. That padlock icon with disappear. Same procedure to turn it back on. FYI, the LOCK button is the button that has a padlock symbol on it and also says CALL.

the LXT500 is FRS and the GTX is GMRS but there are some shared channels/frequencies. So you'd have to use those.

yeah

Midland is different from cobra and the other side
My friend that is called radio encryption my friend I do it will all my radios
right, this isn't what you think it is. It doesn't encrypt anything. This only squelches others transmission that aren't set to your privacy code. So anyone can still listen in but you wouldn't hear them chatter back. Not to be confused with real radio encryption which the FCC doesn't allow.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout oh so our radios have coded toneded. squelched so we have the real encryption data right :)

@@TheRealCobraBurnout again my father had a ham radio when we were kids back in the 1970s I remember hearing him say CQ CQ CQDX His lic.code was KAMG6420 wish I could get that in his memory
We lived in a a house that was on a cliff in Manomet Massachusetts over looking Cape Cod bay.
He would skip Trace across the ocean and get postcards from all over the world it was an incredible time I'd like to get back into it
I like my Corbra's better , I live in a rural area and when I have to go into the city , I love putting the Cobras on scan , I've heard the most crazy crap in the city, the other day I heard , so much crazy crap, I literally was laughing, so hard I had to go to a gas station, to continue laughing, I heard hookers on 4th street , fighting over the John , to drug deals in code , and some dude calling code couch , get the F over here , and get your dropped ice & alot of other weird off the wall stuff . ROTFL . The Cobras can stay on scan , for up to 3.5 days , without being charged , the MIDLANDS , while out fishing with a friend, you're lucky to get 7 hours of use even just being on the same channel with your fishing friend.. There also Is a way to boof the MIDLANDS , but I probably shouldn't go into it on here .. Im pretty rural, maybe once a month you might here, someone's transmission is leaking all over the place , truck drivers , other than that no fun stuff to hear , like in the city. The Cobras can also, still pick up on someone's codes..
I think Midland needs to do updates on these radios. The menus are not user friendly. Charging requires the doc station. They are about 20 years behind the times it seems.
Well done
