- ATAK is one of the most powerfully complicated mapping and communication tools ever made. In the past it has been hard to obtain, hard to install, and hard to configure, as described in this video: • Move, Shoot, and Commu...
Today, however, it is available on the Play Store, there are numerous plugins and map sources to add, and we will walk you through getting started.

Meshtastic and Meshtastic integration with ATAK needs to be on the hit list.
I thought I saw a thread on it on Reddit and I thought I saw a few plugins for it. Not for the atak apps but the actual version of it.
I had a hard time getting mechtastic to work right with atak. They show connected however no messages. Hammer worked ok just sometimes it misses messages, also it conflicts with VNS when it's loaded. The best system I found is a wifi router and a tak server running on a pi or computer. You can use a travel router or a Alfa adapter. Only issue is you can be tracked ez, if your trying to run something for shtf I'd skip this.
That’s what I was about to say
S2 Underground has several videos on the integration of ATAK and meshtastic.
@@Outcaste153how did you get Hammer up and working? It says it's not signed correctly which causes it not to load onto ATAK.
You know when you're trying to figure out how to disassemble an obscure firearm or set up something that isn't super mainstream so you find a video from a guy in like 2006 filmed in 440p that is exactly what you need?
This channel will be that for future generations.
This is wildly specific and I can confirm, I've relied on those blurry ass videos to fix binds I've gotten myself into (typically working on cars)
@@chilescross9205The best course of action for that is to download the video, and save it for later. And if possible, write down the experiences, and even make a new video.

South African here. Our community policing is coming together.
ATAK has been mentioned as a possible co-ordination tool. Our last operation involved a raid with local police on a location that was fairly large. We did used google maps to identify possible escape routes and we split to cover but our control of assets was very loose. While we did make 18 successful arrests we also lost some of the fast movers due to limited communication with the drone operators and the very basic nature of our strategy.
Due to our cell networks being very unreliable and cover limited, if we use this tool we will need mesh networking.
We may also need tiers of op data where mission command has an uncluttered overview of our groups while each group has more detailed information of their sectors.
Finally, radio comms integration, possibly tiered again where group leaders have better comms with command and the drones and their groups are able to communicate amongst themselves without interference. The groups being able to see every member as well as other groups leaders location or better yet able to toggle the amount of friendly units one is looking at might be helpful if that is an option.
Thanks.
Btw.
I find the resolution of googles hybrid far superior to bing in my area, surprised to hear you site bing as your favourite source, would think that would be consistent around the world.
Also part of south African security team/ network. This would be extremely valuable for us.
@@keaganhartslief It looks like you gentlemen have formed a protective insurgency out of need. If what you are saying is true, I am quite proud of you.
Do explain how this system functions. In the United States, private citizens are discouraged and often criminally prosecuted for assisting law enforcement.
@@molonlabe5090 We sit with similar issues here, it would be very easy to fall foul of the law as our assistance of law inforcement does not offer us any legal immunity. It's a tight rope to walk. Unfortunately under the circumstance it is a necessity, trying to accurately explain the equipment status and coordination of the officials would sound exaggerated.
You should get together with Ham Radio Crash Course to show how ATAK can be used off line with Meshtastic to communicate in emergencies. And more on how to de google your devices running these applications.
Yes
I agreee
A video (or 2) showing how to completely decentralize ATAK. No outside communication, only intra mesh network encripted comms/map sharing.
This is top priority to me.

This (new) channel and the podcast are rapidly becoming some of my very favorite content to consume. Well done Isaac and team.
Like a more streamlined version of s2 underground.
Maybe that's what Labs is; an introduction to S2 Underground.

Much appreciated Isaac. Offline, secure encryption would be helpful for my group. And yes, we have followed S2 and you for years…Stay the course and keep up the good fight! TN Mtn. Militiaman 🦅
same here.. Located in Germany love ur content
I would love to see the ATAK implimentation using a LoRa meshtastic network. Great video!
there is one.
What is that? The M net between WiFi points?
It's Meshtastistic module called the ATAK PLUGIN
@user-ee6xt8gu9l It's a internal Long Range Mesh network
S2 Underground did a video on it 2 years ago
This is the type of content we absolutely need
Agreed
I would love to learn how to integrate my Meshtastic network into ATAK. I specifically use Wisblock and have several nodes. Thanks! Keep up the great work guys!!
It is completely possible to have plugins for it... And it works great
The YT channel "S2 Underground" has a video that explains exactly that
ATAK Forwarder is the plugin, and one thing that's important in my experience is the version of the plugin has to match the version of ATAK. You might have to do some combination of GIT and TAK.gov to get the matching components, as opposed to just App store for everything.
I’m an old school comms guy who’s developed a real interest in meshtastic/atak implementation. Please consider more in depth “how to” install and utilize this all together. Thanks
Didnt even know the labs channel existed. I have been looking at ATAK stuff over last few days, S2 underground is a great resource too. I have played with ATAK thinking about usecases: my family is going to a festival, how can we keep tabs on where the kids are, where the tent is pitched, the car parked etc. Next, its a field how can we communicate if no mobile data? (Meshtastic for example). Another use case was for replacing life360, to keep an eye on family and when they arrive at school, worl, home etc. I think having a use case and then walk through and/or homework would be great to help us learn how to use. Next I want to learn how to add camera feeds from static and drone cameras, like US forest fire service somewhere - that way I can set up a nice command portal to keep tabs on HQ(home), my CO(wife) and SpecOps(Kids). Keep up the great work Trex arms, labs and everything else
I love that a lot of the preparedness. UA-cam community is finally moving beyond, talking aboutguns over a million times
Would love to see more about integrating ATAK into small unit tactics. Using it to move in a specific formation without direct line of sight. Also using it to navigate complicated terrain, designating zones of fire. Oh and integration with Meshtastic as someone already mentioned. Can’t wait to learn more. Great video.
I spent 5 years in the Corps, all of which was in UAV squadrons. Been rolling around the idea of making my OWN UAV for years now and I now think integrating this is an absolute must. ATAK + a bird with ArduPilot + Meshtastic...could be REALLY awesome. Video series, anyone? 😁

One of the things I have considered using ATAK for was replacing the use of Garmin Rino’s for things such as ATV’ing and Bear Hunting. We use Garmin Rino’s to make sure we can keep locations of other people in our party (especially for bear hunting in PA) as we try to drive through brush to make sure we are driving the bear in the right direction while also knowing where the other part of the party that’s posted is (for obvious safety reasons). We’ve found the Rino’s too to be helpful for locating other people in our group while ATV’ing as well to ensure we can stay connected and know where other ATV’s are in the group. The issue we have with the Rino’s is that they are pretty clunky to use, go out of sync all the time, And they are often fairly expensive to buy while also having limited capabilities as GPS’s and Radios outside of the “connected location monitoring use”.Where we’ve considered using ATAK as a replacement. Our big concern though is that we often don’t have cell service, so we’d like to figure out ways to plug in ATAK with radios (DMR’s, GMrS, or HAM) or mesh networks to be able to communicate off grid.
there is a plugin for atak that introdcuces garmin inreach and product support. this is really useful for low skill set live tracking of parties over gps.
Providing the community with emergency response resources through Atak has value. As in a hurricane, tornado, flood. How to build a network on a budget, creating a community to communicate with, utilizing a drone to extend reach if needed, etc… appreciate the dedication here
I will add to this that it would be great to learn how to call 9 lines and generally coordinate search and rescue operations. Also gather medical intelligence on where medical sites are and what their capabilities are.
@@davidblack9071 9 lines aren't applicable for civilians. The only thing you need to note on the casualty is what you think happened, what you did, and any info about the patient's medical history you know.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj bless your heart.
An episode detailing how to setup and use meshtastic and hammer alongside ATAK in an offline/offgrid environment would be absolutely amazing.
An episode on meshtastic information would be great
For me I would love to see offline communications through mesh radio networks. At distances or situations where you can't have network access but only able to send data through radios, more secure the better, and if possible able to connect with cheaper radios like the UV-5R for the friend who didn't prepare with more expensive radio setups, and allows for mass additions to new members if needed.
Meshtastic has implemented atak capability so you can use an encrypted mesh network in the field with your team.
The effort and professionalism put into these videos is so encouraging. Great job, guys.
i didnt even know this channel existed, but will definitely check it out now.
Thank you Isaac for this great tutorial, helps a lot to get a better understanding on ATAK. Please go on with this and dig deeper in ATAK and the ecosystem around it.
Not that this comment will go anywhere however i do want to say thank you for all of these tech videos. It’s opened my eyes to another side of being “tactical” my whole life I’ve been training martial arts and competing/shooting matches and running drills. I have a safe full of all the high end firearms and accessories……yet upon starting these tech series videos, firearms feel archaic somehow to me now. I never realized how important communication, drones, radios and subduing Chinese spy shenanigans is. All of this information can be extremely overwhelming so I’m trying to start small and bought myself a radio and just learning channels and the capabilities of that. As well as I need to purchase an android to start atak learning 😅. But this channel and information provided is priceless. I would’ve never known the opposite side of being tactical if it wasn’t for you guys providing it. Keep on rocking!!!
Well said
well said; I like the labs channel tech approach to the tactical field.
Super helpful. Downloaded it after your first video and used it last week to help develop my pace count. Marked off 100 meters and confirmed with trip. Thanks
What I would love to see is an overview of examples of how to use ATAK in a squad.
For example:
-If you're using it to gather intel of an enemy emplacement, what does that look like? Can it involve the integration of other devices actively gathering data for you, like live-video feed from a drone of a specific area (like a CoD UAV or a Ghost Recon spotting drone, kind of)? Can it be used with other devices to triangulate locations of radio transmissions or the like?
-How to use ATAK to set traps for unsuspecting patrols. Can you connect motion-sensors and trigger devices remotely from ATAK itself?
-Is it possible to feed radio or other comms through ATAK to consolidate squad comms through a single source?
These are just a few things that I would love to see because I haven't found them anywhere else. Everyone talks about the basics of it and navigating the UI, but nobody does a great job of expanding on the cool possibilities or giving alternative selling points to just the squad communication and navigation aspects of it.
Thanks in advance! Loved this video for how simply it showed what the rest of the internet makes overly complicated in just what ATAK could be and how to get it useable, lol.
(Realized after the fact that I should probably clarify that the curiosity for these specific examples come from getting ready for a milsim airsoft event where my squad and I have just started brainstorming about how to absolutely ruin some 14 year old's day by using ATAK to go all-in on the South Park caricature of airsofters)
Love how you hint at the complexity of adding TAK servers into the equation. Good stuff.
Make a guide on how to use it for casual stuff. Like concerts, marathons, conferences, airshows etc where you go with group of friends. Maybe even with a side of situation tracking. That way we can train and familiarize others with this stuff.
I think this is a very good idea, because it appeals to different audiences on this platform as well. A wider range of keywords will bring a broader range of people to the ATAK info. I can imagine cases for coordinating your friends/team at a large trade show, or maintaining a status board with road crossings, aid stations, pacers, and medical for the organizers of a trail race. Way to think outside the confines of the prepared citizen use case!
Since you asked: for me the primary use of atak would be hunting. I would get a bunch of dedicated phones and hand them out to the whole hunting party and ideally everyone could stay connected in the field and nobody gets lost. Most of the time while hunting there is no internet so offline maps and some kind of p2p connection or connection to a central base camp would be necessary. Thanks for doing videos like this keep up the good work
exactly my idea!
I’ve watched this video several times now. Thank you!! It’s helping me set up this very ATAK/ITAK mesh network for training ops. Keep up the great work Isaac!
Topic suggestion: How to get data out of ATAK data onto a computer for analysis. And how to set up Data packs on a computer and get them into ATAK. Awesome video!
I would watch that
Ez way to pull from atak is to use wintak. You will need to setup developer options on your phone so you can turn on USB debug. Opt 2 you can find the files on your phone and transfer them. Opt 3 setup a tak server.
@@Outcaste153wintak with a server is the way it best worked for me, but man, wintak is years behind ATAK
I've been looking for a video like this explaining and assisting in the setup of ATAK, thanks man, I just shared this to at least 10 of my friends..
I'd love to see if it's a possibility to run meshtastoc and Atak in a useful manner.
Definitely loving this channel
Got 2x phones with ATAK, ZeroTier, and Meshtastic on each. Also have 2x LoRa radios for an additional option in the PACE plan. I appreciate the video. My use case is communications and information sharing with family during emergencies. Looking into data only phone service for each phone now.
18:36 Litterally sent chills down my spine. And yes, I'm living in the E.U. Life is getting dystopian here.
You have peaked my interest with atak. I have been just prepping with paper maps and coms . But now im very interested in this
Beartooth COMMS with ATAK is incredible.
Cost-prohibitive for most, imho.
Love the content. Anything on ATAK is welcome
I would love a video where you summarize all the useful things like add-ons to install. A list of things to do that are somewhat intuitive.
And then in depth videos about more complicated subjects. Like Mesh/Lora integration.
For those without Part 90 licenses, and across short ranges, MURS might be ideal for experimenting with over the air connection of devices running ATAK. Multiple digital data types are allowed including F2D telemetry(GPS) and F2B teletype(messaging). Encryption and F2C(images) aren't allowed but it could still open the door to some aspiring plugin developer. There are plenty of inexpensive MURS radios with the common Kenwood K1 plugs that will readily accept a cheap Bluetooth TNC.
Agreed, please cover Meshtastic integration. Great video and thanks for the content!
Great information! Thanks and hi from the town next door from Centerville, Tennessee 👋🏻
Hello there!
I want to use this with my family, not training around specific scenarios, but just managing a group of a bunch of adults and kids when we're all traveling together. It's a bit off-label, but I actually think this is a better tool than, say, location sharing on Google maps with a separate chat.
Well, I considering that my main testing buddy is 8 years old, it's pretty on-label for T.Rex Labs!
I'm using ATAK thanks to your 1st video Sir.
Great video...again Sir.
I'd love to see videos about OFF GRID comms USING ATAK.
I use ATAK & WINTAK with my hiking team. The problem is ,as everybody else, The Internet.
I'm not a tech person.I'd love to learn how to run my own server.

Great video, I have been very happy with OSMand+ but I am going to try ATAK now too!
Would love to see Meshtastic plug in
I was thinking about this as well, ZeroTier is neat but would be really cool if you could be totally offline and communicate between two devices if they can talk to each other over meshtastic
I think the best way to use meshtastic devices is with the "forwarder" plugin. However, I have been finding meshtastic hardware to be pretty buggy and limited.
Its already there
Meshtastic just posted an ATAK video today
Yes for setting up a mesh network using mesh tactic and integrating ATAK with it 👌🏼 the more knowledge and how to about it the better!
Until this video I did not recognize the distinction between T-Rex Labs and Arms as far as different channels. I have now subscribed to the Labs side as well. Y'all are doing the Lords work, keep it up.
I used to train troops on how to use ATAK and have made a few plugins for it. It's pretty cool.
Love both Chanel’s. Very interested in this topic. Things I would like to see when using ATAK. Drone control, team tracking and communication (if that makes sense?) basically knowing where your team is and sending data packages I.e. drone feeds , photos messages etc. thanks so much for this content.
How on par is it that this channel gets fewer views after talking about how to degoogle your phone
Just found this channel even though I watched the 22 pistol video a week ago. Plan on downloading atak tomorrow during downtime.
Great video, this is what I teach. Love to discuss dted 0 vs 2, mesh radios, mission package best practices and mission planning and distribution of data. Isr and uas integration is also a great force multiplier
Been toying with the ATAK idea for a couple of years now. I finally have a spare rugged phone to experiment with. Thanks and subbed.
Extremely helpful!!! I’m always excited to get your insight on tools!!!
Excellent video Isaac. Let's see some implementation out in the field moving and communicating please, all while off line integrating Meshtastic, or any better alternative.
I'm working humanitarian aid and evacuation missions on front lines. Cell reception is very rare, GPS available up to 100-500m to the zero-line. No internet available at all (without Starlink).
We work in a number of crews with a number of vehicles, spread up 1-3km at times. Radio comms work ok on 2m bands, 70cm is a no-go. We usually are unfamiliar with the terrain, memorize paper maps as good as possible (google maps rarely works).
We need a system where we can check up on each other's positions, paint routes, mark dead zones / no-go zones, mark evacuated buildings / zones, ect.
ATAK seems to be the perfect solution, but since no cell / network is available, we must rely on 2m radios to share the information across the devices. A tutorial / how-to about analog / digital radio integration for ATAK would be very helpful.
Thanks a bunch.
This is amazing. I've loved the original ATAK video but never felt like I was getting the pull potential of the app.
This new channel has really got me back into the world of ethical hacking.
I’m looking for a way to run atak, on a graphine phone using the meshtastic network for communication from device to device
This is super sick. It'll make planning hikes much more enjoyable. Espeacially the bloodhound function. Drop a pin at the start point to orient my position around home base??? So cool 😁
Meshtastic! Probably what you were already alluding to. I can see using this for two other use case, hunting and incident command for a disaster or something. Also running big outdoor events like a tough mudder or tactical games.
Bread crumbs for others to follow. Search and rescue aids, like showing where each member of the search party has been. Thanks a lot.
To accomplish: Atak to a main command screen in a off-x location like an HQ type location, to a larger monitor/tablet
For me, meshtastic + offline maps are number 1 priority.
Stellar information my friend!
Two things I would love to see:
1. How to navigate from one point to another point over a hundred miles using ATAK. While communicating with the person you are trying to navigate to.
2. How to have 'squad' locations that update themselves quickly enough to see an overhead view of your team mates locations in real time. Like a mini map in a videogame.
The ATAK TAKWatch plugin with the Garmin TAKWatch app would be a good video.
It's on my list!
@@isaacbotkintrex may have to get a garmin watch now, but question, if someone has an inreach mini 2, does it make sense to connect these two, not really right? i guess what I'm asking is, in what ways could you see someone using an inreach mini 2 with this as a setup?
I love this. Please make more of this content.
I would love to see what radios you can use the HAMMER plugin with.
Good morning "Sir" thank you for sharing this 🇵🇭🙏🇵🇭
Would love to see some UAS integration, unsure what all ability is available. But being able to view the video stream across mutliple devices not colocated with the controller would be super helpful
Would love to see more on APRS, Drone, and accessing video cams with ATAK. Thank you!
As a general advice, the smallest resolution imagery is usually most up to date. So the closer you zoom, the image usually ages.
In your future video, it would be nice to learn about offline communication and coordination amongst a group, most of which is likely not tech savvy (family).
Integration with APRS over radio (HAM, GMRS, and eventually business band?).
Good sources for offline maps and elevation data would be great.
Love it! Keep them coming!
I would definitely like to see a video on how to set up your own server in ATAK and how to connect personal communications equipment to it and ground based GPS so that you don't have to rely on space satellite networks in your local area for real time positioning information.
To answer the question asked at the end of the video: The end use case here is organize a private local militia that fellow neighbors can join in times of crisis and to also set up security teams that patrol areas. Obviously that involves mesh networking(something like Meshtastic but that can be internalized for security purposes) and advanced communications systems, drones, cameras, analog/fiber systems separate from ISPs and government intervention, etc.
My 2 biggest items besides meshtastic stuff is laying over interior building schematics taken from pictures of floor plans and finding or creating updated map imagery either online or using drone footage taken from overhead.
I love this, you just popped up for me. You are a very smart man and thank you for what you are helping us do.
This is definitely something I want to get into, your video was posted on a facebook page I’m on and yt did not recommend even though I’m subscribed to all pages
Great video I love you guys. Do you think you would be able to go over ITAK. And if it can work with ATAK the difference and similarities and differences. Do you have to DL the plug in’s like you were talking about?
I was really waiting for this! ATAK info is so scarce and so dispersed that it becomes a pain to access. Hope you keep making these videos!
As a nerd, I prefer your way of creating content, other than Lucas. Don't get me wrong, your brother makes awesome content too, but guns and nylon are everywhere, what you bring to the table is way more "obscure".
This was very helpful! I would like to see more content about meshtastic integration with ATAK.
great stuff, keep 'em coming

Offline maps and rubber sheet plugin is a good start. Lots of videos showing how to deploy TAK servers.
For my fellow Spaniards, you can download regional Spanish maps from the Instituto geografico nacional, they are heavy depending on the region (2-3gb each) but they are really detailed and can be accessed offline once imported on to your device
Thanks for the update! I'm glad to see a recent video
THING I'D LIKE TO DO: I help run a small marine SAR group w/ multiple vessels, and an issue I feel ATAK could help resolve would be; positional traking of the units over the radio-band (UHF, VHF, other?), bidirectional information sharing with other units/ a possible HQ, and integrating some kind of live data streaming capability (vessel information (fuel, time on station), maybe video?). Essentially, how do I use ATAK in its base setup - mapping tool w/ a hint of connectivity - while using the range, and incliment weather resistance, capabilities of a radio frequency?
Dumb question, which ATAK software do i get? I see a couple for "government" and 1 for civil use. Any guidance is super appreciated
I'm having same issue. Few of them listed
Can you use ATK as a OnX hunting replacement in the middle of nowhere Idaho with ZERO cell service. But use Garmin satellite service for sharing points of interest/locations or chatting? Obviously sharing points over a camp fire should be possible with NFC or Bluetooth right?
I would love to be able to download entire state maps. Because sometimes I work in the middle of nowhere and I don’t have service. And need to be able to get around
Thanks for continuing to put out info on this … my essential needs from atak and what I’ve “mostly” figured out but would really appreciate is essentially grid down communications with basic data shared and viewable over atak via radio (analog/ and LoRa )
I want to be able to give my family members an android and radio and be able to get their location and communicate with them in grid down scenarios ( and what system would facilitate that best using something like atak )
Living in the mountain west there are tons of places where there is no cell service. An in depth guide on the benefits of atak in an offline scenario when trying to communicate and work with others.
Great video! Next stop - integration of Lora/meshtastic comms 📶📡
Isaac, would love to see a video on ATAK + Beartooth Mk 2, and how well they work with each other for a complete off-grid encrypted set up.
All the info online about flying drones with ATAK sucks. Could you make a video about that?
Ok so I don’t normally post on most videos in this category, but I really like this channel and content. So hopefully this helps.
In regards to what I’m interested in learning about ATAK, I’d like to know a few basic things about coordinating in a post-disaster scenario. (whatever form that takes)
What if someone is on an iOS device running iTAK? How can they sideload information without a network? Newer iPhones have USB-C, but what about iPhones running the old commie port?
In a grid-down scenario, everyone can’t be expected to already have prepped ATAK, either because most people are incompetent, or because they aren’t running Android. Are there alternative solutions that can be reasonably maintainable for side-loading, regardless of OS?
Is Lo-Ra/Meshtastic a reasonable cross-platform strategy to plan on for post disaster? Or are there better/simpler solutions for civvies?
Hope to see more content on this topic, and adjacent topics.
Good questions here. A p2p side-load would be a great feature for this software, though you will achieve the same by keeping a .apk file of the app (as well as some map files) on your phone and then share via bluetooth/USB.
Glad you got to reviewing this again!
Im gonna put a wild suggestion out there but if you have a designated bug out vehicle there is nothing stopping you from using ATAK on an aftermarket android radio unit. Not an "Android auto" radio, you want one running actual android as the operating system for the radio.
I have one installed in my daily and use it for OBD2 reading w/ the Torque app, I use the JBV1 app for radar detecter integration and speed trap alerts, I could even watch youtube videos on it.
ATAK could be a great addition for hands-free bug out navigation
Would love to see a vid coupling ATAK with the Meshtastic plugin
