Hey Mike, as a fellow Minnesotan i love your videos sharing what its like being an average minnesota fisherman without those fancy ice castles and all that nice stuff!
Uffda, another great video. Kinda embarrassed but I’ve I’ve fished MN my whole life and never have been spearing. I guess that’s the next challenge. Great video!
How do you deal with the y-bones? Do you fillet around them, or do you pickle them? I know it takes a bit of practice to fillet around them correctly, and the few times I tried to to fillet them it was challenging. When I worked for GLIFWC most folks I talked to ended up pickling them.
I know what lake your on your brother is right I fished it 44 years and my family speared there too my teacher caught a 25lb pike out that lake 40 years ago I get 36 plus inch fish every year and release them
@ this lake feed me as kid I will not share the name because it’s got other nice size fish besides just pike. This lake has feed me since I was 6 years old. I grew up poor plus my family used to spear this lake ourselves and ice fished it since 1920. It’s been a family secret for a long time.
Wait did you stop the series of fishing places that might not contain fish please tell me I really like that series and it would make me sad if it stopped
If you pull and then replace them, the hole freezes much quicker. And in certain scenarios, the blocks being pushed under the ice can spook fish. I understand not everyone is strong enough to pull them out though.
@@UnReelMinnesota How would you know if the block pushed under sitting 5-15 ft to the side spooked fish? Unique habitat features can be a draw too? There's no way to know, so choose your pleasure and saw more, and move and lift big ice chunks. They do look cool as out of the water.

Thanks for the video Mike !
Mike you don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for a video like this
Been like a year or 2

Give it a shot! You won't regret it.
Whats the name of that shimmering decoy that you are using?
Nice video!

I just cut them out. I agree, it takes some practice. Pike over 24” are easier to learn on
What lake is this? I’ve been looking for a nice pike lake like this to bring my son and this seems perfect.
What range of depth do you think is the best for spearing?
My favorite is 5-8 ft, near deeper water, but you can have success at any depth, even >30ft, it really depends on the lake.

I wish I could spear but it’s been taking from me by CRPS diasease
@@RobertNelson-i5y what lake is it?

@@RobertNelson-i5y completely understandable
Awesome video! The expensive camera right next to the hole makes me nervous though 😅
Thanks! We’ve definitely had some close calls with them
That spot is a wonderful bluegill spot as well in the late winter March/April if the ice holds
Good to know, I'll have to give it a try!

When the water is open, its easy to get around a lake and hit a bunch of spots, on the ice its harder to cover as much ground
Absolutely not, we have another one in the works. Keep an eye out around Jan25/26th
@ fair enough, cant wait to see it!
Northern Pike have slot limits in Minnesota?
Now we do! Check it out, not only do we have a slot we have 3 different " zones" with different slots and daily limits
😂😂😂😂😂 bait fish
E-fish-ent!
You lost me at the first cuss word.
Here in Wisconsin we would call those baby pike hammer handles…. Those could be used as bait for monster pike
Why pul the blocks; never have, never will. Totally a waste of time and your back will thank you.

I hope you dont have a brother named Scotty, i heard he keeps poor company.
Do not support spear fishing of pike that are 30 plus yrs old
Thank you for your feedback. A member of our concern team will follow up within 7-10 business years.

I hate to let you know this but there is no natural 30 year old pike bud
