How To Remove Bike Pedals From a Bike Quickly & Easily - No Pedal Wrench Needed!

  • If you're ever in a bind and need to remove bike pedals and don't have a pedal wrench available, here's how to remove your bike pedals the quick & easy way - with an adjustable wrench! Save money, time, and hassle by doing your bike maintenance and repairs yourself! This is a quick, easy way to remove stubborn & excessively tight pedals from your bike! Most pedals can be removed with a regular 15mm open end wrench but in this case, neither of my 15mm wrenches were narrow enough to fit. So I came up with this simple workaround / bike hack...
    Click the links below to purchase a bike-specific pedal wrench!*
    - Get one on Amazon here: linktw.in/uJQmpS
    - or get one on eBay: linktw.in/tRbPnZ
    ... in most cases a standard 15mm open end wrench can also be used:*
    - Get one on Amazon here: linktw.in/PHVzaE
    - or get one on eBay: linktw.in/HQKEDE
    Note that some higher-end pedals found on more expensive bikes may require an 8mm hex wrench for pedal removal:*
    - Get one on Amazon: linktw.in/knPagw
    - Get one on eBay: linktw.in/vdUhMt
    Looking for some pedals? Check these out!*

    This worked perfectly! My regular 15mm box end wrench fit but I had no idea how to get the leverage to loosen them. I don't have a bicycle mount/stand (or a pedal wrench) so your standing foot technique worked like a charm. Your video was probably the 7th video on this topic and the only one that worked! Thanks so much!

    Sir, all I can say is thank you. I first ddnt know that the left the pedal had to be clockwise instead of lefty Loosey (like the norm)so with that I ended up tightening that at the beginning much more than it should have but with your trick even though I didn’t get to use the bits you mentioned I just use the wrench which did secure into the area and I put my weight on it to spin it it loosen it up I cannot thank you enough. • @theadventurebiker
      @theadventurebiker  Рік тому

      Thanks for the comment! Attempting to create an impact force by tapping or striking with a hammer doesn't really work well in this case. What you need is a constant but steadily increasing amount of torque applied to the pedal, increasing in amount until it overcomes and thus loosens the pedal. Post back and let me know how it works! Great idea. I have had this issue before and i ground down an old spanner. I wish that i had thought of this myself. You can buy narrower spanners/wrenches that are commonly used for the cone nuts on a wheels axle. This was very ingenious.

    • @theadventurebiker
      @theadventurebiker  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the comment. I've ground down wrenches for this purpose before. I didn't feel like grinding down 1 of the only 2 15mm wrenches I had at the moment nor did I have a bench grinder or a pedal wrench readily available when I did this so I had to come up with a different solution. I had cone wrenches here as well but they typically can't handle the high level of torque that most stubborn pedals require to break loose.

      @dajam9035 Haha thanks man. It really does work!!!! 👍

    • @theadventurebiker
      @theadventurebiker  3 роки тому

      @Justine It is always best to use a pedal specific wrench wherever possible, mainly due to the fact that pedal wrenches have longer handles which provide increased leverage (and thus torque) when loosening stubborn pedals (or tightening them). This should make the whole process of loosening the pedals somewhat easier. That being said, using a pedal wrench is not absolutely, 100% necessary in most cases, and a standard 15mm open end wrench will usually do just fine using my foot-and-body weight method. The problem in using a regular open end wrench is that its jaws usually have a thicker cross section than a pedal wrench, making it impossible to use on some pedals if the wrench flats portion of the pedal spindle has narrow flats (like the one shown in this video). This video demonstrates a workaround alternative, should that situation arise, and no pedal wrench is available. Please also check out a more recent video I created about removing pedals using this technique: ua-cam.com/video/G5CbZg2sKxc/v-deo.html

    Fast forward four years to Jan 2024, this is still sound advice. I did the shoe pressing against the box wrench thing, a stubborn pedal came right off. A pedal that I had been struggling with for a half hour to remove.
    As to the narrow spindles, I'll remember that technique, but pray I never have to deal with that.

      Yes, it definitely works, lol. Sorry to hear that you were having such a hard time at first, and that another site gave you somewhat "misleading" information (just goes to show you that not everything on the internet is accurate, haha). Anyway I'm glad you found this helpful!!! Brilliant. Took a few tries, but my corroded 30 year old pedal came off using this trick. Keep your pedals out of the sand !!

    I’m sitting here packaging a bike up to ship out, went to put it in the box and forgot to take the pedals off...felt like an idiot as I’ve built a few bikes but couldn’t get these damn pedals off! You’re tricked worked perfectly! Hell yeah!
