    Another level of irony this would have added is that Tyrion would have lived up to his name “the Imp.”
    Imps in folklore (and D&D) are sneaky little devils who bond themselves to more powerful beings and drive them towards evil through power of suggestion.

    Amazing symbolism in Tyrion killing her with the pin. Jaime had sworn his sword to Aerys, Tyrion had sworn his mind to Dany. The pin is a direct representation of this. They both betrayed their monarchs with what they had sworn to protect them with, in order to protect the realm. Canon worthy GRRM shit. It's unpredictable, yet feels totally meant to be

      I also like the idea of it being an excellent, if not intentional, final f* you to his dad - a man so obsessed with the family's name and legacy, who will be remembered as the father of a mad queen and two sons who both broke vows to commit regicide! I feel like the irony would have tickled Tyrion in his cell.

  • @gravesyy6696

    It’s a really good re-write. The writers played it safe with Tyrion because he was so popular early in the show, and as a result he lost his edge. This would restore it! A Varys/Tyrion showdown would have given both of their characters a purpose that followed their arcs nicely

    • @rebornstillborn
      @rebornstillborn 5 років тому +16

      Yes! I wish they would have let characters take their natural course instead of pandering to the viewers (who wanted a show that didn't pander to them). Bronn is another one I think, Arya's dark turn seems almost absent except for her Frey-pies which were never mentioned again. Didn't Jon and Sansa want to discuss what happened to those who killed their mother and brother and many more. Would they be disgusted and horrified once rumours spread that somebody had served human flesh to the Freys as punishment?
      Many missed plotlines :/

    I absolutely love the Tyrion vs Varys concept. Dany's fall to the dark side would be much more believable if she had a devil on her shoulder. Daario has that role in the books but in the show they never really did much of anything with it other than one or two lines.

      Daenerys' mad Targaryen arc wasn't an arc but a sharp right turn into madness. When I was watching "The Joker" the film shows how Arthur becomes the Joker. We watch as he loses everything from his job to his identity to his supposed friends and "relationship". His only escape was The Murray Franklin Show but in the end when he is delighted to be a guest on Murray's show, he hears from backstage Murray and his panel make jokes at his expense, that was the last straw and he snapped and we believed it. What was Dany's snap moment? She heard bells? By the time she snapped she already won so there was no push over the edge into madness.

      I didn't have a problem with going mad/ becoming tyrannical because she's always had a thirst for power (needing the North to bend the knee even though she needed them as allies etc) and a knack for conquering yet trouble doing the peaceful ruling. She had this tragedy about her where she wants justice but has a terrible way on executing it. However, it didn't have enough development. She was on the way to going there, and had a lot of backstory/ premonitions to support it (e.g when she was in essos and went into the mages' tower and had that vision of a destroyed red keep). However there was no consistent follow up in the last season, it needed much more time and plot to get there, there was no development for her other than missandei's death and betrayal

      They should have turned it into a strategic decision. If she let King's Landing resist, try to kill her dragons, and then just surrender peacefully after they failed, then every city would do that. Now that Westeros has the weapons to kill her dragons they'd all be taking the chance that they could kill it and win. But if they fail "Sorry! We surrender! lol"
      She would have to set an example that you either accept her as Queen or be destroyed immediately.
      I think that would make more sense bc in the show I didn't get any hint of her going that insane that quickly. I guess some people did though.

    You know, the fact that Tywin comes back and strips Tyrion of all his power, it occurs to me that Tywin sent him there to begin with assuming he'd f--- things up, and as soon as Tywin found out that Stannis was riding for KL, Tywin was hot on Stannis' heels, expecting to find the city near panic and ruin and Tywin could ride in and save the whole place and everyone would be begging him to take charge (possibly even stand in for Joff, too, until the boy reached adulthood, giving Ty ALL the power).
    Instead, he found a city well-defended and the people in fairly good shape, and he said "Aw HELLS no...this will never do."
    I think he stripped Tyrion of his power and his glory (actively undermining and downplaying Tyrion's part in the whole thing while he was recuperating so there was no one to argue the point) because he knew that Tyrion was MUCH too smart and too dangerous to Tywin if he had that much control. For all that Tywin always snubbed and ridiculed Tyrion, I fully believe he FEARED him even more, because he KNEW this was the one child who was as cold and calculating as he was himself, and the one child who could unseat him from power.

    I think the weird mention of elephants from Cersei is a sort of bending of the knee to Lord of the Rings and Pellenor fields, which included elephants in the last big battle of the trilogy. Reference the book all you want, god knows it'll provide some guidance on how this series went so wrong.

    • @97pd48epbh
      @97pd48epbh 5 років тому +1

      I also think in the scene it's mentioned in, she's talking about the battle and those elephants before being interrupted by Euron Greyjoy. He does his whole conquering hero shpeel and she gives herself to him as a reward like he wanted. But directly after that she's back to musing over things she wants. Which at this point is Jamie safe and to crush her opponents in the most extravagant and spirit breaking way as only she can do.
      Remember one of the things she taught Sansa was to learn to use her body as a weapon to win over men.

    I'd personally love to see this storyline play out. It's so much more natural. There's conflict between characters we like, questionable actions making us question our own morals and who we really stand with, which is what made us fans in the beginning. It was all so bland and easy in the final episodes, no heads butting, maybe a little worry, but no wonder, and that's a problem. And it would give SO much more meaning to Varys' otherwise worthless death. As it stands, Tyrion turned him over for what? Pure loyalty to the queen? He had no agendas of his own? He's much too cynical and smart a character to be so blindly loyal to someone with so much power.
    Even being rushed, even with the immense pressure of living up to the hype, I believe I could've resolved this series much better EVEN if I only had 8 episodes.

  • @abenerice
    @abenerice 4 роки тому +3

    I think the showrunners omitted the Tysha confession, not because no-one remembers her, but because it would have been so traumatic and dark.
    Actually the confession in the book, and the story behind it, is so horrid that it completely breaks Tyrion's mind, making him obsessed with finding her, and losing his rational mind (he looks for the place "where whores go" : he follows his father's answer to his question, seemingly not realising it is not a proper clue for finding his lost love. he doesn't make his own investigation, or pay someone to do it, he just clings to Twin's dismissive answer, he takes it at face value, hoping that when he finds "where whores go", he will find his lost love... ). The constrast between the premises of their romance, a sign of hope that people can love in spite of everything (his appearance, their disparity in birth), and the horrid destroying of it all, is one of the most traumatic elements of GRRM's books for me.
    As a matter of fact, I am under the impression that the show basically shows "whores" being... I don't know, desensitised or something? Whereas if you look into it, in the books just as in reality, most women in brothels are not willing to be there (i.e. in their personal experience, the sex they have is akin to rape. Men do not se it this way, but to the women, it is undesired sex, basically rape, and they are just as free as slaves or prisonners of war). Brothels and whores are a way for the show to include nudity and sex without the guilt and grim darkness of the world. The books tend to show us this : women in brothels have been raped and abused and given no other choice, or are there because it is the only way to escape brutal rape and murder, and their reality is just as horrid as any other victim of war crimes.
    And Tysha is just the epitome of this logic (a woman having been the victim of circumstances, or crimes, or twisted schemes, has no other choice than being victim of unwanted sex for the rest of her life). Which would make the show much more political on this level, and maybe guilt-tripping the audience... and much darker anyway : Tysha's story is so sad, hopeless, and beyond any hope of redemption (or even, closure, as it shows in the books, there is no way to know of her eventual fate in the vast world). This is my opinion on why they deleted it.
    What do you think?
    And I agree : your storyline for Tyrion makes sense in the light of it, and your rewrites are just brilliant!
    Thanks for all that. Please keep it up. (I am re-watching your rewrites, after the new one)

But he can still get redemption by doing pretty much what he does in the show at that point: refuses to be Hand, gets thrown in the dungeon, and then serves as the tipping point for Jon to do his duty, fulfilling his redemption by using the very skill that caused the mess in the first place: persuasion.

    Loved the video, but a major void that is still missing from the D&D penned show is the influence of Tywin Lannister. For 4 seasons, Tywin ruled the 7 Kingdoms, not the king. Tywin shrewdly manipulated other leaders and the King and did so with his pen and trading on other people’s motivations. The Red Wedding was a master negotiation that destroyed the Starks and brought the Freys and Boltons into the fold. Whether it was evil was a matter of perspective. It was evil to the Starks/North, but ended a war and saved countless lives.
    With Tywin out of the picture, Tyrion had the opportunity and the skills to be the new Tywin behind the scenes for Dany. Everyone wants the throne, but Tyrion knows where the power really resides. Tyrion has Tywin’s political skills and he watched Tywin in action. Tyrion doesn’t have the respect that Tywin had, so he needs to be more calculated. He could bring Dany new allies (Dorne/Martel/Greyjoy) and at least cause others to question their loyalties to Cersei (e.g., the Iron Bank). His motivations aren’t evil, but include calculated, message sending bloodshed. He is motivated to kill Cersei and knows the people of Kings Landing are worthless pawns in his political maneuvering. He is nothing, the Imp, sentenced to death, and he is motivated to be the man Tywin despised while tearing down everything that Tywin built.
    Tyrion could bring Dany into Season 7 with the political might to match her army. The final conflict is that Dany saw Tyrion’s diplomacy as a way to the throne but not to lead (she wants to break the wheel of the old ways) and Tyrion can’t control her the way Tywin could manipulatable Tommen and Joffrey. Summary-Your rewrite with Tyrion using his skills to step into the Tywin role behind the scenes; he is not respected so it poses additional challenges to overcome; his motivations aren’t pure evil but calculated against his enemies (Cersei/Tywin) and the people he doesn’t care about personally or politically (people of Kings Landing).

    GRRM did say that Tyrion was the villain once. No matter how you interpret that, it's still more 3d than whatever Tyrion got in the past couple seasons. He did NOT deserve to be dumbed down like that.

    I'm imagining a reveal from Varys that tywin played a similar role in the Mad King's Court. As hand to the king, Tywin was in prime real estate for pushing the King towards madness, and it would make sense. Especially with how quickly and adeptly Tywin starts directing Prince Tommen.

      That's true. But maybe they could've condensed it to using "Myrcella as Queen" as the main part of Doran's current plan? Since they cut out two of his children, there's no spare to send to Dany... so maybe if they made Doran try and make his son the consort and father to future kings by placing Myrcella on the throne? And maybe playing under the table at sending someone to Dany if maybe she would marry Trystane instead? Just in case the Lady with Dragon's says yes?

    Would fans have liked it? Uh, I would've! I thought for the longest time that Tyrion was going to team up with Dany to burn the people who had wronged him at the trial, since he CLEARLY stated that he would gladly kill them all after they dragged him through the mud like that. But nah, he gets to Dany's front door and he's super chill and turning his resume to be hand of the Queen just because. And I personally think Peter Dinklege would've LOVED to play a darker side of Tyrion. Can't wait to see your Dany and Jon videos! (:

    Excellent video, sir! Whether I agreed with your direction or not (I did), the way you explained everything was wonderful. I actually watched the Daenerys one first, such was the UA-cam rabbit hole I found myself in, but as soon as it had finished, I went to your page and watched this one.

  • @speedrrracer
    @speedrrracer 5 років тому +26

    If I have your position straight, it seems as though you're confusing Tyrion's hatred of the nobility / ruling class (who are present during his trial) for hatred of [all humans in King's Landing]. Tyrion has no beef with the common people, his heroics in saving the city support that (if he hated everyone, why save them, but if he only hates the few, then those actions make perfect sense). This would also support a motivation for a replacement for that ruling class, hence the support for Dany, as well as his later actions in condemning Dany after she burns the common folk of King's Landing.
    Oh, and your idea for a re-write, Tyrion v Varys is a great idea. Go for the fan fiction and do it up completely.

    • @Wveth
      @Wveth 4 роки тому +16

      The idea is that he didn't hate all the people of King's Landing until they turned against him after he is accused of killing Joffrey. They do hate him, because they're fucking fickle and easily led, and he knows that.

    • @Zorcon741
      @Zorcon741 4 роки тому +10

      You could argue either way. Tiron is mocked early on as hand in the books as the "little monkey demon pulling the king's strings," basically that he's the reason why Joffreys rule is bad.

    This change in his character would hurt but make sense. I would be upset with Tyrion but not the writer because that is the difference between writing the character in a way that flows versus doing so in a way that doesn't. I'm looking forward to the rest of these rewrites.
