I actually use some of these hacks. I like learning new ones. One I swear by is using the plastic party cups to start my tomatoes. I fill the cup to only 1/3 full, plant the seed and then add soil as it grows. This gives the plant lots of rooting area and makes for some stout plants to put out into my beds when the weather warms. I also use cottage cheese or yogurt containers cut up for plant tags.
One thing I like to use for plant tags is taking old horizontal blinds that are being thrown out, and cutting them down and writing on them. If you are using a seed starting tray with a humidity dome, put them to the second row, so they don’t impede the placement of the dome.
I actually spend HOURS reading comments, copy and paste all the ones I like...add it to my word document of useful ideas. I am that determined for my first season to be successful. That also makes each learning video go so much further. the better the teacher, the better the audience. I place them into a square 4" pot to keep them upright until planting time. they decay a bit faster, I think than the heavier cardboard you used, allowing roots to spread faster? thanks for all the wonderful info!!!

Instead of a normal journal I use a computer spreadsheet. The first 2 columns are the Julian date and the calendar date and of course word wrap on the 3rd column for commenting. With the julian date it makes it easy to track things like germination times and times to harvest. I also enter things like crocus and lilac bloom dates for natural season timing.
I got sick of trying garden journal apps and went to a spreadsheet too. Sized columns to show the date and first column on my phone so it is easy to use in the garden.

cut old toilet rolls in half then cut slits up 4 sides N E S W then fold them in on themselves like re-sealing a box without tape, fill with potting mix and you have a jiffy pot
For a small family that doesn't use that much toilet paper and for us poor planners who wait until the last minute...the box idea that he gave is golden. But yes, your idea is lovely too. If I can get my two young boys to cooperate...you know how kids are, they will likely just throw them in the garbage next to the toilet. SIGH. Plus I like the idea of taking off the tape and letting it expand. and the ability to manipulate how big or small a container you want. This also impacts if you want to up-size planting or not. I would prefer NOT unless I want to go ahead and transplant into the big container of their permanent home...
I keep an assortment of sizes of carboard tubes to use for forms... I use them to wrap news paper, or the brown paper that they use for packing material now and wrap it around to form a biodegradable pot... pull out the carboard tube and make another one...

You can also use old mini blinds for tags. The broken mini blinds are great for tags because you just cut them into strips and stick them in the ground. You can shape them into V and then that point can be stuck in the ground and you can write the name of the plant on the other part
