I really liked the idea of the metal star to scare the birds away. I have a problem with starlings pulling out my onion sets over and over again. As for an economical shaker, you can use the shaker lid off a Parmesan Cheese container on any standard mouth canning jar and the lid seals shut when you are done. I use the shaker on a quart jar to put out salt on icy sidewalks.
I did that to keep my chickens out of my porch flowers and pots. For the time I had them, did not need a doorbell because any visitors let out a scream to announce they've seen one of the fake snakes. 😂 Turns out also, chickens eat snakes.... So it did not work for me.
Another tip for protecting strawberries is to put rocks around that have been painted red. I do this before the strawberries come out. Birds go to the red rocks and find they aren't edible. Then when the strawberries come in they think they're rocks so don't bother them.
Awesome ideas, and I loved all of them! Never thought to fasten the domes with landscaping stakes. The laundry bag will keep out the birds and squirrels far less expensively than the bird netting. Thanks!
I am blessed with a very large backyard. So I set up a feeding station opposite my garden. I have different bird and squirrel feeders and different levels of water and bird baths. It works very well. ❤
These ideas are great! The squirrels in my area are merciless. All of my seedlings were dug out yesterday(in the matter of an hour). I was ready to cry. Today, I replant and head to the store for the hacks you have listed. Thank you
I found some nuggets of good information here! Never thought about the laundry bag as pest protection. we’re expecting a hard freeze tonight, and I have a stockpile of the little wire baskets that I use to help protect my plants from getting smashed when I cover with sheets, but it occurred to me that the laundry basket would also work for bigger/taller plants too. They can be pretty flimsy though, but worth a try.
This year the cicadas are hatching down south, with 2 different batches. Those laundry bags are great for the plants. I have used a tomato cage over the plant with the circle part on the ground I bend in the prongs inward or just cut them off and put either the laundry bag or a pillowcase. Make sure you tuck it under the plant pot as well to keep the bugs from penetrating into the plant pot. I had an infestation of these tiny beatles and i had to use the pillowcase to keep them out.
Enjoyed all your dollar tree hackers. Some I had never thought of. I also enjoy using the dollar tree buckets. Not just for water but also for carting mulch, soil, weeds, whatever you need - for around the garden. The cloche ideas are great as they cost so much in the garden nurseries and catalogs.
I take blue car towels and put it at the bottom of the planter to keep soil in and allow drainage. Then i put some sponges with the holes in them and put them on top of the towel. I then put the dirt in. The spinges keep in some moisture for the roots to grow towards. Here in NM it got horribly hot last year. You dont want to over water but you want the plants not to dry out either....
Love the idea with the osmocote! I’ve been using Osmocote consistently for at least 25 years and am always buying it in the plastic jars. I think I’m going to try your method!!!
Our DT has planters with a handle to hang on a wooden fence or deck. The hanging basket, cocoa, Core liners.are good to put in the bottom of a planter for drainage. The potting soil at DT can be used if you beef it up with some nutrients if in a pinch. The fertilizer sticks are not that bad either
Great video, thx. I found by accident, when drilling holes in plastic it seems to be gentler, cause less damage and less mess if you run the drill in reverse. Dunno why? Just works for me.
Great video! Will definitely be scoping out my local dollar stores before going back to a garden center or home depot/lowes for supplies ☺️☺️ Thank you!!
For bells I invert a 5 gallon bucket and cut the bottom out. To that I add cake carrier top, microwave plate cover or a the clear plastic cutting boards to have a translucent lid. With a white bucket, you don't even need a clear lid, they are translucent enough on their own.
For diatomaceous earth a griiling condement squeeze bottle works well. And always use a mask when using it, as it can be bad for lungs with continued uses. And two small baskets with a small cut out fixed together protects fruit like pineapple etc
Love the clothe idea and the basket for hose. I also have used the hose reel and it just rolls off the side and is a pain! Sprinkle repair guy stacked up my brick pad hose was resting on. Hose wasn’t uniform and looked messy.
How could I forget , the laundry basket as a hose home what a great idea , and so cheap too . I have one hose laying on the ground and one hose in a broken hose real .
I’ve learned so much from you , thank you . I appreciate your show and tell , some ideas were simple , some were not , all benefited from the show so I could see with my own eyes what a good idea you were talking about .
Excellent ideas! I need reasons NOT to go to the DT, lol. By the way, you could have tried taking the lid off the container, turning it on its top, and using the drill to poke the holes from the inside of the lid out. I would do this on an old piece of wood so that you can protect a good tabletop.
I watch a lot of videos for ideas. This was full of great information. Thank you. I appreciate this kind of information, it’s very helpful, especially when you’re from a small rural town and don’t have many choices. 😊
Those are all great, budget-friendly items to use for our gardening adventures. Thank You for sharing these excellent ideas! 😊 This new subscriber loves your 'Zen Garden Oasis' with it's 'baby' trees in the background. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Hoses…we just leave them stretched out in place. Where I can I hide them along edging. I don’t have time to roll up and unroll hoses and one supplies water to irrigation to a distant garden. Those laundry baskets can’t take any sun. Tulle fabric would probably be cheaper and lighter than laundry bag but may not hold up to the sun as well. Some quick fixes, but a lot of plastic and hope people recycle them before they bust apart. Sun really does a number on plastic without UV protection.
I use upside down laundry baskets for my strawberries. Cut off the bottom (watering dish), then the basket is for to hold the strawberries off the ground.
@@tompatchak8706 this grill was actually a really well made one. It has a 3/4" tubular frame that's really sturdy and it has stainless steel panels . I took the grill off an replaced it with a counter top to bridge the gap. A cheapo charbroil type grill frame would never hold the weight of the lathe.

Thank you for these hacks. I never really knew how to garden but I do want to try this. I hope I do well with strawberries but how do you keep the birds, bugs or animals from eating them? I have a lot to learn about gardening. What would you say is best for a first time gardener to grow from a container? I was thinking strawberries or herbs or tomatoes and I like these tips because I either tend to kill plants by over watering or under watering so I stuck with no plants. Have a nice day 😊🍓🌼🌱
You hit the nail on the head with all of these! Us ladies ❤❤ ANY kind of hack! I bet your wife put you up to this video! 😉 😉 She got me to subscribe. Thanks for all the great ideas. PS (Here's one, don't put insect killer down when it's super windy out...lol)
I would put holes in the bottom for drainage in that basket that you have the water hose in I know that it has holes all around it but if you didn't want mosquitoes coming in it would be better to put some holes in the bottom for drainage
@@ZenGardenOasis. I understand that I was just curious if you were going to hand pollinate. I have before but have gotten my garden healthy enough to not need to. I buy the rubber snakes at the Dollar Tree & put on my hanging plants, garden, wreaths & railing on my porch. It keeps the birds away for a dollar!
Great idea…happy gardening
Snakes never worked for me. Nor owls. Birds came in always

The mirrored hanging star is such a great idea! I would’ve never thought of that! 😮

Thank you for these great inexpensive garden hacks! They fit into my budget real well!

Large Parmesan from Costco shakers I use for DE. I use it for my chickens and my gardren.

I don’t have a soldering iron… so I heat up a very pointy metal awl over a candle and then melt the holes into the plastic.

To drill plastic lids, remove lid, flip over, & place on scrap wood. Drill now.
