Another detail supporting the "Snake with prosthetics" theory for Miraidon is the colors of its Future Paradox Energy: the one running in the metal parts of its body (limbs, back, handles) is entirely violet, while the one in its exposed parts (throat, tail, eyebrows) adds yellow and some white. It almost feels like the tri-colored energy is the real body of this Pokemon and the violet is only the external layer, seeping into the metallic attachments just enough to be able to control them.
Worth mentioninin Fuecoco's line might have another inspiration: Correfocs. Correfocs are a catalan and valencian tradition (east of Spain) where people celebrate playing with fire and lighting things up, sometimes people participating wear big costumes on top of them that look like dragons or reptiles to mimic a dragon's fire... that square in Fuecoco's belly? it's supposed to mimic the hole the people inside the structure use to be able to see while wearing them. also the reason why Skeledirge looks so 'unnatural', with straight lines is because he is made to look like he was handmade from plaster to resemble a figure molded into that shape... like the dragons from correfocs are.
An interesting fact about Crocalor. The English name Crocalor is a combination of Crocodile & Galore. Lastly, the Japanese name Achigator is more fitting, makes more sense, & it's name is a combination of Mariachi & Alligator.
I really think Brambleghast's design is inspired by Pablo Picasso (and Cubism), I don't know how that connects to the other themes of its designs (I'm sure there's something, knowing the Pokemon designers), but it just has to be in there. Pablo Picasso was one of Spain's most famous artists of all time, after all. I'd love a deeper dive into that to see how that does connect with the western and ghost town themes!

When you bought up the pictures at 22:02 for the medieval knight. This is actually what i think of regarding Greavard and Houndstone; those two give ghosts n ghouls vibes. The way the fur drapes off houndstone is like the cloth ontop of the horse. I also think you could say Greavard could have Greaves in his name as in the the piece of medieval knight armor. Also...his name sounds like graveyard which is cool for my ghosts n ghouls theme.

Evolutionary biologist/paleontologist here, I think the main connection between Lemurs and Shrews is that treeshrews are more closely related to primates than they are to other shrews and both belong to the group called Euarchonta (the shrew-form has evolved like 10 times in mammals). But treeshrews belong to the group Scandentia, which along with the Dermoptera (Colugo), are closely related to primates. Additionally, alongside the lab rat stuff, the closet related group to Euarchonta are the Glires (Rodentia+Lagomorpha[wabbits]), together they form the mammalian superorder, Euarchontaglires. That is why working on rodents in the lab has benefits that extend to humans, we are more closely related to little rats than we are pigs or other mid-size livestock. Great video!

on a sideline... as someone living in a town next to Barcelona, i absolutely hate it when people who are not spanish pronounce Barcelona with the 'th' sound. "But it's a way to honor the local pronunciation, isn't it?" well... No. 1. For starters, if you want to honor the spanish pronunciation you have to get rid of the way the 'o' is pronounced, as it is not Bar-theh-low-nah. But Bar-the-loh-nah. 2. Is not even 'how the locals' pronounce it, it's just how the spanish-speaking locals pronounce it. Barcelona is historically a catalan city (tho in recent history it has become more and more spanish-centric)... meaning the 'local' pronunciation for the catalan language would be Bar-sah-loh-na. (in fact the Barelona futbol club is called 'Barça', pronounced 'Bar-sah', because of this). In catalan the 'th' sound doesn't exist... sure, using the spanish pronunciation is not 'wrong' but if someone is using it to 'honor the locals' keep in mind... you are only honoring half of the locals while ignoring the historical main language of the city and over 40% of its speakers (tho, again, now there are more spanish speaking people in Barcelona than catalan). Either way, it's wrong, because Locals wouldn't call it Barcelona, they normally call it 'Barna' in an affectionate manner.
One bit you can add to Ogerpon is that the “Pon” comes from the jp word “Ponkotsu” (ポンコツ). Literal translation is “junk” but is often used to describe airheaded or ditzy characters, which in my opinion, is how ogerpon comes off with its idle and walk animations.
I get _why_ Bellibolt is the way it is but I really wish the bulbs were the actual eyes. I would like the design if it looked more like a frog than a disguised Chansey
Minor biology quibble regarding the orthworm segment. Earthworms aren't related to annelids, they ARE annelids. Polychaetes (generally bristley marine worms) and oligochaetes (earthworms and other generally smooth terrestrial worms) are the major subclasses.
1:31:44 I dont know if it was intentional or not, but over in the TCG, there is a Fezandipiti ex card that is used a lot because of its ability also called Flip the Script, which lets you draw 3 extra cards if one of your Pokemon were knocked out by your opponent on their previous turn
13:16 says larger locust, shows a weta (cricket relative). Also locust is like a vague group within grasshoppers just being the ones that swarm. Nothing particularly with size just like one of the largest European grasshoppers is the migratory locust
15:45 Just gonna let you know that the proper pronunciation of dachshund is "Dacks-hoond," or "Dacks-sund," for Americans. Sorry to be a nerd, but it's a pet peeve of mine when I know a word is being pronounced incorrectly.
Honestly, the future is almost undoubtedly going to be using combustion vehicles, due to basically being impossible to match the energy density (in both weight and volume), and it can be produced by pumping energy into distilling it from the air. (Of course, as of currently, that isn't even close to be economically viable when a few thousand years of the black gold is still relatively easily accessed. But should fusion take off, or we eventually reach that mythical "peak oil" that was supposed to happen some 50 years ago, then it could come around as an alternative.)
I do want to say that I also think part of the design lore behind Armorogue and Ceruledge is megaman. The arm cannon is literally Megaman X's X-Buster and Ceruledge is clearly a reference to Zero. Hence the energy sword, also the ghost typing could reference how Zero sacrifices himself in the first game. Also their color schemes are swapped. X's mostly blue colors onto Ceruledge, and Zero's mostly red onto Armorogue.
I dont think ive ever seen anyone make this connection, probably due to the lack of strength, but I always saw Fuecocos name as being a reference to Cocoa beans, mostly due to Mole Sauce as for the most part, it uses chocolate or pure coca and the sauce is quite spicy.
24:13 i think its funny that the comments seem to hate you pointing out how avocado-like Bellibolt is, cause the first time i ever saw it, i was like :OOO avocado pokemon!!! only to find out its an electric frog 😂
So, fun fact: All the Japanese names for the Future Paradox Pokémon (with the exception of Miraidon) have the word tetsu (鉄) in them, which roughly translates to iron, but can also be used to describe most metals in general
Given that starting with Sword and Shield and Legends Arceus, they're doing cross-gen evolutions again, I hope we see some cross-gen evolutions of some of Paldea's Pokemon in the future. Like I could see pre-evolutions of Dondozo and Cyclizar being pretty cute.
awesome video, but quick correction, those bird of paradise photo are actually from island of Papua in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and have nothing to do with Amazon or Spanish/Portugal colonization
Great Video 😊 I want to add: Toedscool and Toedscruel are based on Truffles to. Their heads are the Truffle and the legs could symbolize the underground spore network. Toedscruel is based on variants of black truffles like the perigord truffle and Toedscool is based on the white Alba-Truffle. They have the ground type because Truffles grow inside the ground.
As a guy from Spain I want to share with you a joke about Quaxly. When we discovered that Paldea was going to be based on our country we associated Quaxly with a style from here called "cayetano". Explanation for that. Conservative rich people that wear puff vest and they have regional forms (yes). So when we discovered Quaquaval it was hilarious. It was like seeing someone that when they were young they were super homophobic, but turns out they were gay all the time
*Pawmot is most needless Pokemon. 13:30 I just like his design a million times better than Pawmot, the hair tuff, size of the arms, and general large stature of Pawmot are overdone imo.
I'm gonna point out something pretty cursed. Belibolt's false eyes remind me of the Dark Souls basilisk enemies. Those giant bulbous things? False eyes. Their real eyes are tiny beady things right above their mouths.

Absolutely incredible video, as usual! I was so shocked to see my name in the patron list, but it was super nice
26:23 Frigatebirds *can* hunt for themselves, picking up fish from the surface of the water.
I was thinking it, too. I had also wanted to comment about it. Thank you for taking the lead on that.
1:00:10 You mean crest?
Honestly, the future is almost undoubtedly going to be using combustion vehicles, due to basically being impossible to match the energy density (in both weight and volume), and it can be produced by pumping energy into distilling it from the air. (Of course, as of currently, that isn't even close to be economically viable when a few thousand years of the black gold is still relatively easily accessed. But should fusion take off, or we eventually reach that mythical "peak oil" that was supposed to happen some 50 years ago, then it could come around as an alternative.)
Been waiting for you to cook with a video like this great work
your depth of research is so impressive please i want to meet you researcher omfg
Also Arboliva's arms look like a Roman Head Reef.
I love how Gamefreak's designs keep getting more complicated and lore rich even when the pokemon seems simple at first.
I dont think ive ever seen anyone make this connection, probably due to the lack of strength, but I always saw Fuecocos name as being a reference to Cocoa beans, mostly due to Mole Sauce as for the most part, it uses chocolate or pure coca and the sauce is quite spicy.
I always thought Spidops might have a bit of a Spider-Man inspiration too, the shiny colors are kinda similar
1:03:20
Roses are red
Lockstin has a brother
The great tusk elephant was big
But not as big as the 'Your Mother'
Given that starting with Sword and Shield and Legends Arceus, they're doing cross-gen evolutions again, I hope we see some cross-gen evolutions of some of Paldea's Pokemon in the future. Like I could see pre-evolutions of Dondozo and Cyclizar being pretty cute.
How did it take me this long to realize the sponge thing you wash your pokemon with is in the shape of a mareep?
awesome video, but quick correction, those bird of paradise photo are actually from island of Papua in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and have nothing to do with Amazon or Spanish/Portugal colonization
They have the ground type because Truffles grow inside the ground.
perfect video to clean my room to
As a guy from Spain I want to share with you a joke about Quaxly.
When we discovered that Paldea was going to be based on our country we associated Quaxly with a style from here called "cayetano". Explanation for that. Conservative rich people that wear puff vest and they have regional forms (yes). So when we discovered Quaquaval it was hilarious. It was like seeing someone that when they were young they were super homophobic, but turns out they were gay all the time
Did you ever notice that paradox Entei's crest and horns resemble Ho-oh's rainbow wing item and feathers?
Rellor looks like a muppet and I love it
I will always argue against "dunce" being part of dunsparce's etymology. Also the cuelebre is a potential influence on dudunsparce
Thank you I’ve bin waiting this!!!
Honestly, regardless of what you think of the gameplay, this gen's Pokémon goes hard af.
Literally waited 2 years for this video
finally someone gets dundunsparce and why hes the best normal type besides furret
*Pawmot is most needless Pokemon. 13:30
I just like his design a million times better than Pawmot, the hair tuff, size of the arms, and general large stature of Pawmot are overdone imo.
43:58 It’s Big, Scarry and Pink!
I'm gonna point out something pretty cursed. Belibolt's false eyes remind me of the Dark Souls basilisk enemies. Those giant bulbous things? False eyes. Their real eyes are tiny beady things right above their mouths.
You should analyze Gen 9 gym leader designs.
Y’know, Bramblin’s red highlights make it kinda _look_ like spaghetti in addition to the spaghetti western thing.
