I think I could like this a million times. Here I am with my bass in my lap, looking for bass covers for this song and this was right at the top. Clicked the vid with the idea that I'd attempt to play by ear, but here I see you've put in bass tab and notated the song in bass clef. I'm better at reading tab but it really helped having the bar lines to look at for timing. I don't think I've seen anyone else do this. Excellent job!
Spectacular cover, Greg, and brilliant feel with your laser-focus pentatonic runs. Walter Becker was a superb bassist! I love how he plays what’s just right for the pocket, while adding colorful riffs with the horns.
Thank you :) Steely Dan songs surprise me. When I think it's a studio guy playing, a lot of the time it turns out it was Walter. He was a fine player indeed. I think he qualifies for the underrated column? This was an excellent bass line he came up with. It's a lot of fun to play, and it fits in perfectly with everything that's going on in the song. I really enjoyed learning and practicing this one. Thanks!
Dear Greg Fairweather, Tell you that you are one of the best in your scores and you play the bass you do it identogo for that reason I consider you a great musicist for all the good that you do, wish you much luck so that you do not stop taking out new songs and be able to pay them so easily for al the work you do , a big hug from Valenci Spain Toni Darós Tormos, thank you
Hey Greg, I'm guitarist who just got recruited to play bass (I don't own a bass-yet). We are playing this tune- our trumpet player has a bass that he's letting me borrow! I just found your video and really appreciate the work and transcription that you put into it. I'm trying to get the "mindset'" of being a bass player, not a guitar player who is playing bass. I really enjoy studying your video!
Just found your channel. Fantastic playing and nice transcription. I can hear a Thin Lizzy influence in this one (I also know nothing about Steely Dan).
Really strong work, here. Only thing I can think would make this better would be the dumb dumb chords written out above or below to conceptualize the chord progression as well. You've done that with the Bass clef, but I'm not smart enough to follow that... and most times sheet music has the dumb dumb chords written near where the change happens like a chord pro slash sheet. Thanks for the dedication to perfection and the awesomeness of your effort. I really appreciate this... headed to a rehearsal and I should've spent more time on this, lol. You saved my bus this time.
Thanks Greg for another great transcription and performance. I've been working on this now for a few weeks and I'm getting somewhere ... slowly! 🙂 Hmm, I wonder if Walter played this with fingers or a pick. What do you think?
Hi Toby, it was my pleasure to do this one. I'm glad it's helping you out :) That's a great question. I can't say for sure whether he used a pick or fingers. It sounds like fingers to me, but I could imagine also using a pick? hmmm...got me thinking. Thanks :)
@@BassCovers Actually Greg on this clip Walter clearly uses fingers. They were miming though! Steely Dan - MIMING? :-) ua-cam.com/video/RxXfNZWjot4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=CalVid
What a great bass line. Thanks Greg for the transcription and the video. I love the rhythm in beat 4 of measure 5 which appears frequently throughout the song. Have you ever checked out Walter's bass work on Kamakiriad? Florida Room is really cool. Thanks again Greg. I just bought your pdf transcription for My Old School.
Hello Greg, thank you for sharing this video and transcription. Great, great job. I do have one question, is the anyway I could get the PDF with the transcription? I will pay for it if necessary, or I can go to the websites you listed to contribute. Thanks in advance.
@@BassCovers Thanks for your reply. And thanks for putting out all these great videos to teach others how to play songs. I appreciate it. On my screen, even at full screen, the video goes out of focus and the suddenly comes back into focus. Must be something with youtube, maybe I need to watch the video in high resolution.

Walter Becker rocked on bass
Yes he did!
Excellent!
Thank you Dave!

Hi Rick, thank you very much. I hope you enjoy it :)
sounds great Greg. Walter would be proud! BTW- What year is the Fender?
Hi Josh...very kind of you to say :) It's a 72' Fender. I've had it since 85'!

that line is a beast! Looks challenging and immensely fun! Did you transcribe it?
hehe, it is a bit of a handful ;) Yes, I transcribed it...thanks!

Great
Thanks David :)
Is it me or does the bridge/outro sound like it was written for horns?
sounds like it to me too...especially since I hear horns playing...haha :)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cheers!
why is the tab out of focus so much?
out of focus? It's not on my screen. Maybe the internet connection? Viewing in a full screen might help?
