This is the ONLY correct version on YT. The rest all get the intro double stop slide wrong then they play the rest of the track in first position. Of course it’s completely ok to play the track with your own variations and note choices, but this is an accurate score of this brilliant groove by Rainey
This bass line almost seems predestined it's so perfect for the song. I think the biggest challenge as a bassist is to write something that's interesting that actually enhances the song rather than distracts. A lot of bassists will just settle for root notes so they're not obtrusive. But this bass line is a perfect example of how you can take advantage of space, countermelody, and syncopation to push against what's there in a positive way.
Listening to Steely Dan is like laying down in a hot summer night and watching the stars....making you feel really small and insignificant. These musicians are out of this world and it does not matter who is in the band at the time....bass ,keys, guitar whoever, will play along the line and not note for notes adding their own feel. But the real question is :"How do they do it?"
I saw on a retrospective that Walter Becker hummed this bass line to Chuck Rainey to get across what he wanted, and of course Julia aces it. This is a savvy group of Dan fans and you're keeping us happy!
My Gosh!!! Like @szmkabels said: proper lesson, I am so grateful. Real notation, kind considerate pacing with metronome and coaching for nuances. This is the kind of course instruction I look for. Theory and pragmatic approach with a song to hook my fleeting attention to. Thank you Julia!
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses Cheers Back :-) I'm off to a Minneapolis Gig in the freezing morning. 2 Hours supporting former addicts, abused women and ex-convicts. You can imagine, they are grateful. We will all have the best time ever! I would have never believed my old Peavey Foundation would bless folks this way. Thanks! That's Bass at 70!!!
A lot of people can just play the notes and even play them on time. But you add just the right 'feel' to it. Great job, excellent instruction and playing! Thanks for sharing!
Love it Julia great breakdown of a legendary song and legendary bass player. On a side note my father victor feldman is playing fender rhodes piano on this.
Your father is a legend, and brought joy to so many, in so many classics from Steely Dan, Zappa, and countless jazz recordings! I'm used to hearing him on mallet percussion - didn't know he was on Rhodes on this tune! Amazing!
I like the way you put that in segments. Those Steely Dan bass lines are awesome, and you play them expertly, with all the feeling, thus the "bass face"!
As always Julia CRUSHES her tutorials! Great post and this was super clear. I think that Josie was a really funky fun bass with lots of style (as in 70s bell bottoms and sequins, but I digress). Loved this, and I'm a fan of the Steely Dan popular songs like this. They recorded so clearly and with such excellent tone that its hard not to love their music if you like cool jazzy fusion like sounds. I will use this tutorial to learn how to play it better than I imagined I could previously.
Hi Julia, I love watching how you enjoy playing the bass. It is contagious. I'm a big Steely Dan/Donald Fagen fan and a beginner bass player. Muchas gracias desde El Paso, TX!
I was hooked the first time I saw you here and the more I watch the more I like your content. I’ve seen a few videos today and they inspires me to dust off my old bass and try to learn some groovy bass lines. I’m just a happy amateur who used to play in a local rock band with some strong country influences. Nothing fancy really. But I really like the groove from the 70th. You have a sweet style Julia. There is something about the way you express your passion for music.
Thank you so much Julia never did I think this bass line was attainable for me as a bassist.Your breakdown and comprehension made it so I was able to unlock it and have sooooo much fun
I'm not a bassist, but I am a big fan of the instrument. You covered this perfectly, including little details so many others might have missed, such as NOT going back to the E on the first time through the figure in the intro, but doing so every other time. Also, your intonation is so clean. Great work!
That Bass line was jointly constructed by Chuck Rainey and Walter Becker. Becker was thinking Cop movie incidental music and Chuck embellished it. Great job breaking it down here. The making of AJA is a great Documentary.
Wow, I don't even play bass and watched this entire video. Have been listening to this track since the album was released in '77 and didn't know how sophisticated Mr. Rainey's part was. Sublime!
I often find myself having to learn 30 to 40 new songs for a band I just joined with pending gigs. In this situation, I cut to the chase and look for isolated bass tracks or bass lessons. This video is far and away the best bass lesson I have found on UA-cam! The flow and the pace are perfect for me! Thank you Julia Hofer! You will be the first place I check from now on!
One of the coolest basslines played by one of the coolest bassplayers. Kudos to you Julia. I have loved playing this bassline and your expressions show you really are channelling Chuck Rainey. I note that it is evident that a bass player wrote this, unlike many songs that it is just a simple backing. He expertly provides a solid foundation but adds the tasty licks, runs and syncopation that makes this outstanding. André in Sydney
Amazing, I have been trying to learn this song for so long (Correctly) and even though I had the tab and even a lesson (JUST TO LEARN THIS SONG) all i got was some tab and as much as I can cram within an hour lesson and watching the clock.. I never got the feel of it. Thank you Julia!
I have seen your work in years and how you cover some of the famous bass lines esp this SD bass....I just had to watch all over again and marvel at how Chuck Rainey was a Bass badass...again thanks for doing this...😅😮😅😮😊
Thanks for posting Julia, I learned this a few years ago and your tutorial is so clear and concise. Greatly appreciated. Chuck Rainey what can you say - he's so groovy.
Steely Dan is always a good time on the bass guitar. Pretty cool Julia. Another band that is always fun on the bass, is early Chicago. I love comping Peter Cetera's bass lines. He's always been very underrated.
I just discovered your channel last night and dayum... After watching this tutorial, it might become one of my favorites! Learning to play the bass guitar has been on my bucket list for decades; and watching this video is inspiring!!
The thing with Steely Dan is that you can do that with literally every instrument and the vocals. All parts are incredibly groovy, complex, and recorded to perfection.
Julia, thanks a lot for the lesson. It's inspiring how the groove comes out of you. Please make a lesson for the song San Francisco by Brother Strut. Please
Julia does such an amazing job of reproducing these parts! I would be highly interested in hearing about her method of figuring these things out.....Please share!
Thank you very much Julia for this class. I can finally play a song I like a lot like the original, I'm happy. Could you in future videos show us more songs? Bye
Fantastic, you are wonderfull, thanks very much, this realy helped me a lot , quite a difficult song, got to be done right,, you realy helped me ,, exelent😊
You are wonderful! I'd have to fly from California each week for lessons, but it would be worth it. Love the explanations, slowing it down, and the tablature. Thanks much.
I've seen a lot of different bass 'lessons' or covers on this song, but I believe this is the only *CORRECT* version I've seen to date.
This is the ONLY correct version on YT. The rest all get the intro double stop slide wrong then they play the rest of the track in first position. Of course it’s completely ok to play the track with your own variations and note choices, but this is an accurate score of this brilliant groove by Rainey
I believe the double stop should be D & G not E & G
@@pedullabassTalking about the intro right? No that's definitely E and G, though the E is a bit faint in the album recording!

Love the bass line! Steely Dan was the music of my teen years! Always enjoy your videos, Julia 😊
Welcome back Julia, it’s been a while. You seemed to really enjoy playing that one.
