Yes! Thanks for the review! Never heard the original, too, but Chris Cornell is gold. Now it would be nice to know what you think about Led Zep's original. I know l'm off to hear it now that you have got me curious!
He talks about how he lost his voice a lot live in the mid 90s because they switched to directional mics to avoid as much feedback so he had to scream everything then after couple years he switched back to sm57s. If you noticed in 96 performances and onward he got was more still in front of a mic and screamed way less . He talks about it in an interview
Was lucky enough to see this man sing live a few times. Maybe the best male singer I ever saw live (and I’ve seen a lot of god damn concerts) I’m getting a little weirded out by how many performers I’ve seen that are no longer alive. RIP Chris.
Thank You is a really beautiful song. Always tugs on my heartstrings. It's incredibly well written & heartfelt. But I kinda know it's not really the type of music or song you usually like so how you felt was understandable. Glad you recognised how good Chris was on it though. Whether I agree or disagree with you, I always love hearing your opinion. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻
@@jenewbee I was being smartass-tic, of course. But yes, I once saw a commercial for some show called Drop the Mic. Looked like a talent show, in the vein of The Voice or all those. Assume it had something to do with rapping. At the end of their performance, contestants were instructed to hold the microphone out from their bodies, and just drop it on the floor.
So an interesting bit of info. In the 90s with Soundgarden, he blew out sm57 mics in studio all the time, and when they went on your they had too much feedback so they got mics that where more directional and not up as loud...so what did he do...he screamed everything....in which he lost his voice and they had to cancel shows a lot...so after a few years of that he went back to sm57 and 58s and just changed up how he focused on where the mic was ...was another reason he got a lot more still.on stage...
I concur, you should go back and listen to the original. It’s a BEAUTIFUL song by Led Zeppelin. The original is absolutely meticulously done. This was a very good cover, considering it’s just a guitar and vocal. Chris Cornell was a master of his craft. P.S. I don’t believe ANY Led Zepp fan could have ANYTHING negative to say about the original. As I stated above it’s a BEAUTIFUL song. I definitely recommend it for a reaction vid.
Great review, cheers😁 I was wondering, has anyone said anything about that new "round" effect you've had on your green screen recently? I can't look at the screen for more than a minute or two when you use that one. It makes me feel weird, like I'm going cross eyed. My kid said he had the same issue so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced that?
Wow Dave...cant believe you do not know this Zep song. It did/does get airplay but as CC said...not as much as others and is a gem. Ofcourse matter of opinion. Also, would you expect anything less from the GOAT. You know it by now Dave..deep down. Peace brother!!
Really enjoyed the reaction. Not sure if knowing the original would have changed the score based on how Chris changed it. Im happy with the score. Just curious. What i learned most from your review is in watching you react to the mount rushmore in my opinion of grunge era singers: Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley it seems mic awareness is something they all focused on since they all had such big, powerful voices. I wonder if it was coincidence or came from them knowing eachother personally and coming up together at pretty much the same time. Great job as always. Eddie will always be my favorite singer but I can't deny Chris is a top 5 all time voice and thats why I keep requesting him. :)
I honestly have no idea Jason, I wish I had an answer. For a lot of vocalists, it's how they were taught, for others it's just something they pick up on their own.
I think the stiffness came on as a age thing. Probably joint damage or something. Cause he seemed to be a little more free with his playing during the 90s
Chris had a great voice. And he did a good job playing the song. But he may have picked the wrong song. Because this song was, by its nature, too hard to improve. Because it was done so well the first time. On most Zeppelin songs, Plants voice comes out good, really good, or downright amazing. But Thank You was just one of those few songs, above all that. I cannot imagine anybody else's voice, doing that song justice. It is just "Made for Plant."
Definitely was on Led Zeppelin 2; it’s the 4th track, sandwiched between ‘the lemon song’ & ‘heartbreaker’. A good track, but certainly not the best one on that album, imho.
I’d never heard this particular version of Chris singing this. It was a song that he’d put on a live acoustic album and in my opinion the version on that album was waaaay better (here’s a link if you want to compare: ua-cam.com/video/rbQKTD3dR3s/v-deo.html). This version you listened to was all over the place on tempo.. felt rushed.. was a wee bit pitchy in places (very unusual for him).. kinda felt a bit like he wasn’t really that interested at the time. Weird. Whereas the one he put on the live album was much better. Btw, the original song is very similar.. not a particularly amazing track tbh, but I always felt the emotion Chris put into his performance made it stand out much more than the original even though he didn’t change the song much.
He was on but his voice is pretty fatigued here. If you want to hear his voice sharp and full Thank You off of the Songbook Album is a better version vocally. The Walmart session and Songbook Album, are all vocally brilliant if you ever give any more of them a listen.

One of my favorite songs from Led Zeppelin, Chris Cornell did a beautiful job singing Thank You like many songs Chris cover. RIP Chris Cornell 😇💝
It was on the second album

Probably figured out that mic awareness after destroying all those microphones recording Superunknown 😅
It was 7 destroyed, I think.

Great cover especially if familiar with the original.
He destroyed 6 different mics during the recording of Superunknown trying to learn after he killed the first two on accident
He should have auditioned for that reality show, Drop The Mic!

GOAT
I’m pretty sure this song is on Led Zeppelin II album which does explain why it’s a softer song and their style slowly expanding

That was a nice song, and a good cover of the original. I agree with your score
RIP 🐐
As familiar with Rush as you seem to be.. I am very surprised you have never heard Thank You by Led Zep. This is from their 2nd album not their 1st.
Talking of overloading the mic, I read that he blew several microphones during the recording of soundgarden albums with his voice
