Yamaha FG-800J demo. A great guitar for only 300$. How does it compare to a 4000$ Gibson?

  • Hey guys,
A brand new Yamaha FG-800J came into the shop so I decided to compare it with my Gibson Songwriter.
    What do you guys think?
Have you ever played this model before?
    My mind is blown!

I just bought one of these guitars today for $229.99. Unbelievable guitar for the price. It literally competes with my Martin HD28 and my Taylor 714 (which I modded into a 914). There is not one dull fret on the Yamaha. These guitars are incredible!

I am a finger-style player and I play a Yamaha FG800j with a LR baggs HI-FI pickup and a low action setup. This guitar has a 25" scale length and a very comfortable playing neck. I also have very expensive Martins (OM21) and Breedlove (Premier Concert) guitars. The Yamaha is by far my favorite because it just sounds and plays fantastic. Yamaha has proven you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a great guitar.

I had my wife and two other people turned around in the guitar store. I went back and forth between the FG 800 and a 2,800 Martin... All three people picked the 380.00 Yahama over the 2 800 Martin... I now also have the FG830.

That Yamaha just kicked the Gibson in the arse from this end of the tube.

Great comparison! I just got mine a week ago. I did modify it a little bit. I replaced the nut and saddle with bone and the plastic pegs with rosewood pegs. I did a short before and after video. I should have used a pick as well, but I have not used a pick regularly in years. I think it is a very nice sounding acoustic. Not the best for beginners I think because the length and width of the neck and shape will make it hard for people without the calluses and ability to stretch and press down. I am extremely happy that I have this guitar and well worth the price!

Sounds great for the money but not as complex tonally as the Gibby but for someone's first guitar it's great.

Well for a laminate nato (less premium wood) b/s guitar that costs 10 times cheaper, and still sounds great, versus a premium full solid-wood guitar, i think it's incredible.

@@tidaltidaltidal Can you not read? I said it sounded great for the money. No way it's going to sound as good as an all solid wood guitar though...

@@WysteriaGuitarwell one is rw and the other is nato/mahogany. For bg and a strummer guitar I’d rather have the Yamaha in this comparison😊

Good comparison, Yamaha make quite exceptional guitar's, acoustic's particularly, however listening to them both, the Gibson has it,but it's close,I have an FG 830, and it's excellent. Yamaha's are my pick in that price/range, Consistency is main reason. Gibson's & Martin's are definitely are quite superb, but the price can make them out of the reach of many players, but a good player can make ALMOST anything sound good 😊😊😊

This guitar spacing for fg800j is a little small for the fingers. But it might be good for small finger. beside the space of frets as well is a little short almost not enough room for three fingers.

I just bought one on Goodwill Auction, took a ton of the bottom of the bridge, plays ok, but the sound hangs almost as good as my Taylor 314. (Oh yes, a little over $100. & That is total with freight.

Hi, what does that "J" indicate? I looked at the Yamaha website, and didn't find the designation. Thanks. I've seen a "T" for sale, and I assume it means "tinted" to look older. So, "J"?

the only thing I dont like about the FGs is the string spacing is way to close for my bigger fingers. Had to get a 1 3/4 nut guitar instead.

IMO the Yamaha had that booming sound of a martin the Gibson was a little muddier sounding on the bottom end to my ear but both great sounding guitars it's amazing to me that you can get that great booming sound for a quarter of the price I bet that makes those die hard d28 guys scratch thier head like a bull.
