- We're on a guitar budget this week. That's why I'm picking 5 of the BEST bluegrass guitars that are under $300. No matter what you're experience level is, you're going to be shocked by how good these guitars sound, so stay tuned for some fun surprises!
Before we go any further, I just want to say how grateful I am for this community - for those of you who watch Acoustic Tuesday every week, the ones who celebrate their guitar geekiness, the ones who play their guitars no matter the circumstances.
I am so grateful to be a part of this community. Seeing everyone come together over their mutual love and camaraderie towards the guitar is inspiring, motivating, and uplifting. So, thank you for being here and I hope to see you again soon!

Now, for the 5 guitars for under $300...
5) Yamaha FG-800
What used to be the Yamaha FG-700S, the FG-800 is a bargain of a guitar. After some improvements in both bracing and top wood, this guitar for under $300 is a showstopper. This solid top dreadnought comes in at $199 and is powerful and phenomenal. It's durable, reliable, and is a great guitar to have around. When I worked in sales, I'd recommend this guitar to players of all experience levels just because it was such a good bargain.
4) Fender CD60S
A guitar similar to the Yamaha FG-800, the Fender CD60S is a great deal. I especially like this guitar because it comes with so many essential guitar "gadgets" like a strap, capo, case, and tuner. Besides that, the guitar has a solid top and plays smoothly. The standout note on the Fender CD60S is that it offers a slimmer neck profile, which works perfectly for folks with smaller hands. If you want to flex your style muscles, this guitar also comes in black.
3) Bristol BD-16
I was confused by this guitar at first. The Bristol BD-16 is an all-laminate guitar, and it's more expensive than the solid top Fender and Yamaha - coming in at around $250. How could that be? Fortunately, when I started listening to this guitar I understood its slightly higher price. The Bristol BD-16 is also incredibly durable. If you're not a fan of maintenance, humidity tracking, or want to play in the outdoors, this is a great guitar for that.
2) Alvarez AD-60S
This guitar is the real deal. It's got the aesthetics, a solid top, forward-shifted scalloped bracing, binding around the top, and an abalone rosette. I really love this guitar as an entry point into getting something that will last years and still sound great. Coming in at just under $300, I've had great experiences with this guitar and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a guitar on a budget.
1) Takamine GD20-NS
Why did I make the Takamine GD20-NS my #1 pick? It offers a completely different tone from all of the other guitars. That's because the Takamine GD20-NS is made with a solid cedar top. This allows the guitar to have a warm, woody, and delicate tone. For those of you who have a lighter touch, this guitar is for you. It's got volume, punch, and a delicate tone. Coming in at $299, I highly recommend this guitar if you like a lighter-sounding guitar.

Great video, Tony! I'm over 75, and started learning to play guitar after I retired, about 9 years ago. About 3 years ago, I bought an Epiphone Hummingbird Artist Series at a local guitar store here in the Raleigh, North Carolina area. It was an "open box" Sunburst item, so I got a great deal on it at $130. They even set it up for me, and put Elixir nanoweb light strings on it for about another $40. Here in the Raleigh area, as in many other places, we are pretty much in "lock down" mode. My Epi is helping me get through these weird times. Thanks for all you do, and love your channel here on UA-cam! Hoping you and yours stay safe and well.

Love this episode Tony. Great story on guitars being a sort of friend, because they certainly are for me. Back in the days of high school, the combination of bullying, faculty that didnt care about my problems, and struggling gradewise because of it, had me thinking some not so healthy thoughts. But whenever i got home, there was my guitar, waiting for me to play. I still have that guitar, a 2008 Fender HSS Strat, and because of all we went through, i can never get rid of her.
Tony, You are a totally whole, fully self-actualized human being. You bring a lot of joy and goodness into the world, and it is a far, far better place because of you. Thank You for the awesome inspiration. During this time my family and I have been locked in our place to be safe, and my guitar has kept me busy. I have been challenging myself to practice those more difficult things I have avoided while playing guitar. It's tough because although I have been playing music over 21 years I still take guitar classes at the community college here and we have been shut down. Our instructor has asked us to make short videos of us practicing and uploading them to her our and it has been fun because that is how we are now being graded. Tony, Hello from the Windy City. Great show today. I am glad you did your top 5 under $300. As a new acoustic guitar /guitar player in general , I was extremely glad to know Guitar Center did not steer me wrong when I asked for a guitar for a brand new player and without hesitation George handed me the Yamaha FG800. It was the first guitar I actually purchased for myself and not only liked the look but the sound. I have been using it for 3 months now and enjoy it greatly.

Takamine is really my favorite. I was branded for the Guild D-140 but when I tried the Takamine I was sold, the warm clear sound you get with fingerpicking and strumming is amazing.

Hey Tony, love your Acoustic Tuesdays, especially this one. I was coach for both my kids hockey teams when they were young. I played hockey when I was a kid in Winnipeg while watching Bobby Hull and the Jets. Went to United Center in the 90's to see the Black Hawks and it was the thrill of my life. Guy beside me said, "So you stole Bobby Hull from us." Bobby Hull came to our "Father/Son Banquets when my dad was a single dad. It was great to be there, good times. We had an old guitar when I was I was young going through hard times. Old brittle strings and didnt know how to tune it. Always wanted to learn but gave up. Now I'm in my 50's, learning lots of Bluegrass songs and lovin it. A whole new world opened up for me. Thanks for your great videos Tone, all the best to you from Edmonton AB.

Guy Clark was a story teller, a great story teller, and I think that is what made him great. His stories are still real and you can relate to them today. (One of my favorite Lyle Lovett songs "Step Inside This House" was written Guy Clark.) This was music that helped me get through college. Best wishes, wash your hands, and stay safe! I just came across your channel a couple of weeks ago & have to say I enjoy you & the content you share. With that said I came across this video & I noticed it's over a year old. I bring that up to say that own a Fender CD - 60 (w/o the "S") that I bought almost a year ago today, 10/27/21 to be exact, & have to tell you all that I absolutely love it! I bought in a small Pawn Shop here in Texas who happens to also be an authorized Fender dealer. I got the guitar, which as I said is absolutely gorgeous & plays as well as it looks, with a Fender Tolex hard shell case, which is a beautiful + locking case, for $245 out the door.
I have never been a person of means, nor am I a virtuoso, & it has always been my philosophy that you don't have to spend a lot to get a great looking, great sounding guitar. And in my experience I have found that to be true. While I fully appreciate the better materials, fine craftsmanship, & even some of the added fine details like Rosette's, Mother of Pearl inlays, etc. but for the most part I have come to find that many, if not most, couple of hundred dollar guitars sound just as good as ones costing thousand. In my humble opinion it is, it has always been, & will alway be the player over the guitar. I believe you hand a "cheap" guitar over to an experienced player & they'll make it sound like a million. While the reverse is also true that you could hand a beginner, or very bad/poor player the most expensive Martin ever made & they'll make it sound like....well you know it reside in the bottom of the toilet. :D ;) Y'all keep a pickin & grinnin, I'll catch you on the flip-flop :)
Oh BTW: I usually use Elixir strings, both Poly & Nano which I have been very pleased with but recently tried Martin 92/8 Phosphor Bronze Lifespan String & am absolutely in love with them. They are bright, crisp, clean sounding strings & since I just put them on last month, 9.16.22 time will only tell if they last as long as the Elixir's.

My son has a Takamine GN20 (smaller body) and it sounds wonderful. I seem to love solid cedar tops (my favorite guitar is my Seagull Artist Mosaic Element). I also have an Alvarez AD66 which is the same as the AD60 but has a solid African mahogany top. I really like that one too. Awesome budget friendly guitar. Fun video 🤘👌.
Tony, you should check out the review I did of the Washburn HD30S :) It runs at $200-250, and it sounds better than at least 3 of the guitars on that list (in my personal opinion) Washburn is really underrated.

Back in 1968, my dad bought me a red label FG-180, a guitar that I still have to this day. I records well and sounds wonderful. Even though I also have a Gibson SJ-200 custom, I often just grab my Yamaha FG-180 ....Russell D. in Olympia, WA
Love Yahama instruments. My first guitar was an FS720S in the Red Burst. Yahama is a quality company and their products reflect that! My Yahama trumpet also got me through roughly 12 years of constant use and countless performances in every type of weather.
Holy hoo ha... I made the show... Guy Clark is one of my faves as well. His story telling around the songs is even more entertaining. Next time they let me out of the house, I am going to find that Blues Trail Historical Marker in Grafton, WI for Paramount records.

Last time I saw Guy live, he bemoaned his own lack of guitar skill. Hadn't really thought about it till then. Maybe efficient is a good way to put it. He was as good as he needed to be to make songs fly. The song was his thing.

Another great Acoustic Tuesday. I first heard a Guy Clark song on the Jerry Jeff Walker Album. LA Freeway and That Old Time Feeling. Which also led me to Townes, Joe Ely and a bunch of other Texans. I saw Guy and Townes at a Bar in Richmond, Va. I think it was 1990. Townes was Sober as a Judge (yes, no lie). Let’s just say that Guy wasn’t feeling any pain. Guy started out the show saying, We’re from Texas and we don’t take shit from anyone! Townes sheepish smiled and cover his face. Both were fantastic. On a side note I’m realign enjoying your record “Rodent”. Very nice picking and good songs.

Hello from the UK on lockdown. Loving the Hoody! Great video as always. Keep up the videos, massive boost to me. After watching your show when you featured a Guild M-20, I fell in love with the look, sound, size. I went out and got myself one. Its the only guitar I now own. Wonderful rich dark mahogany tones, massive punch even with the 00 size. Thanks for that and other guild related content. They are my favourite guitar builder these days, love their guitars! Yamaha and Takamine make some killer well-made guitars. I have owned both. Very decent bang for the buck. A solid top guitar 15 years ago, no matter what the make was always came it at 450 plus. How time has changed.
Fell in love with Guy Clark’s material about ten years ago. Saw his use of the capo on 5 strings of the 2nd fret to emulate the Drop D sound. I use it onDublin Blues and Darcy Farrow. Like the song sez , If there’s a rock n roll heaven, you know they’ve got a hell of a band!”

I remember hearing about Guy Clark listening to Jerry Jeff Walker who recorded a lot of his stuff but then I bought old number one and started playing a few of his songs in the clubs I know back in Pittsburgh people never heard of them but whenever I would play his songs they would stop the place you go silent and they would listen.... thank you Guy Clark the last gunfighter

Keep in mind that Sissy Spacek won the Best Actress Academy Award for portraying Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter" in which she sang all the songs herself. She also released several albums, most notably 1983's "Hangin' Up My Heart." There are some wonderful UA-cam videos of Sissy performing with Levon Helm who played her father in "Coal Miner's Daughter." Sissy and Guy are also both from Texas-Guy from Monahans and Sissy from Tyler. So, it's entirely appropriate for Sissy Spacek to narrate "Without Getting Killed or Caught."

Guy Clark loved Michael Heidens guitars, who now makes mandolins. Superb song writer who mentored Steve Earle.

The traditional styled Fender accoustics are underrated, especially the ones from late '90s - early '00s .

Yep. I bought a 1973 Yamaha FG-160 last year for $190 from a local seller and it quickly became my favorite steel string.I had much more expensive guitars and sold them but this Yamaha is special, it's my #1 and ain't going nowhere.

Tony, thank you for introducing me to Guy Clark! Now I cant stop listening to the song the “The Randall Knife” off the 1995 album, “Dublin Blues.” The way Guy tells a story is personal, and dare I say beautiful! What a true legend, and he’s pretty good at the guitar too!

Here is some 'wrapped up in all sorts of music' factoids about Sissy Spacek. Back in 80 played Loretta Lynn in 'Coal Miners Daughter'. Has a daughter who's an accomplished singer songwriter acoustic guitar player named Schuyler Fisk. Had the pleasure of catching Schuyler and Ben Taylor (yep, James' son) in a cozy venue some time back. And you would do right by checking BOTH of those two talents out. Highly recommended buying Whitney Schuyler's 'The Good Stuff' album, she'll love it...ENJOY!

I have been using a Breedlove Discovery Concert, I shopped around a bit, and I found this to be a great bang for the buck, but I have seen very few reviews on Breedlove at all.
I also have the Discovery Concert and I love it. I liked the Discovery dred but the body size is a little large so I went with the smaller Concert. Ended up selling my Martin Dred Jr. because I was always picking up the Breedlove instead. We really do live in the golden age of inexpensive guitars.
Tagima Woodstock TW-25 dreadnought is a great value for just under $200. I'm not even a dread guy but it looks/sounds/feels great especially the nato satin neck. I'd really like it if you had a subject index with times for these longer videos

Ibanez AW54OPN will always win this category for me. You gotta try it. It gives Taylor a run for their money at an amazing price. No comparison for this price point.

I LOVE the way the Fender CD60S feels in my smaller novice hands. I’m starting to learn how to flatpick through the Tony’s Acoustic Challenge website but I need a more appropriate guitar that won’t break the bank. I’m trying to play blues, bluegrass, maybe some country rhythm with fill licks. I’m pretty sold on this model, but I see it comes in a spruce top and a mahogany top. The mahogany sounds absolutely gorgeous fingerstyle, but I can’t actually flatpick well enough yet to tell which is a better choice for what I want to learn. FWIW, The guitar I already own is a Martin 00-12e Koa (Koa sides with spruce top). Great for roots blues and fingerpicking, but not so great for flatpicking. Opinions?
That recording of the AD60 didn't do it justice. It sounds so much better than that. Great playing, too.

Alvarez is the best sound and quality for the money in my opinion. My first guitar was a Alvarez dreadnaught. It’s sitting here next to a Martin HD28 and it definitely holds its own. The Alvarez sounds very much like a D18 in comparison. If I only had 300 dollars to spend on a guitar that would be it. Mahogany back and sides makes a difference
I just found your videos and like them very much. I discovered Guy Clark about 18 months ago when I saw Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl keen play an acoustic show. They were talking about him and played something by him. I want to see that movie as I am a Townes Van Zandt fan as well.
There is another town in the Amish Country of PA named Paradise. There is a bumper sticker I have seen that says "Paradise is halfway between Bird in Hand and Intercourse".
I got an ibanez AW200 with solid Engleman spruce top flamed maple back and sides for $75 in like new condition from guitar center. It’s a powerful guitar

Oh man I definitely thought I was gonna see an Oscar Schmidt on this list. MY 2003 OG is one hell of a nice playing cheap guitar. I've written dozens of songs on that bad boy and it's been through some shit. Never goes out of tune, excellent action off the shelf. Beautiful instrument. I mean that is 18 years ago so idk how old Schmidt and Washburn are doing these days but I'm guessing good!

Great video! My main guitar is a 1969 Yamaha FG110 which I got for $75 in a pawn shop. I have a handmade Yamaha as well, a LS-10. The FG is better to my ears! I've always liked Yamahas ever since my mom got me a FG 180 for my birthday in 1968! Even though they are budget guitars they are built well and are bomb proof.

I’m digging this episode man! If you’ve not checked out the Ibanez Artwood series do yourself a favor. I was gifted the AW100 and WOAH!!!! Such a sweet sound and just a joy to play...super comfortable. I don’t think they make the one I have anymore but when I do see them for sale they are under $300 😂🤘🏼🎸
