This is a very good review to watch. You know what you are talking about, not trying to sell something, just giving honest educated opinions. Thanks. Nice mix of playing and speaking too. I have three Yamahas, so already a fan, but appreciate good review vids. Nice playing too.

Nice video. I went into my local Guitar Center and asked an employee if there was anything new in the acoustic guitars I should check out and play., He told me that Yamaha had just re-did the bracing on the FG-800. I picked up a beautiful Desert Sand burst model in the acoustic room, played it and immediately knew I was going to buy this guitar! For (then) just $179 - awesome price point for a beautiful sounding guitar with equally awesome bass response and beautiful finish. I plan to have a pickup installed and bring this to all my performances of my group - the Manzanita acoustic band. Great guitar!!

I just ordered a used vn AIMM (vintage natural) version of this and can't wait to get it in my hands. I've had nothing but great experiences with yamaha guitars. Super consistent quality control sets them apart.

Absolutely agree. This is an INCREDIBLE guitar. I've spent over $1,000 searching for an outstanding $200 guitar. I'm done at last! Will sell all the others cheap! Who needs a Martin! Really!

Thanks for the review. I got a few cheap acoustic guitars already but the thing that bugs me is the very intonation. When the strings are tuned open, they may be off-key when playing the frets. And i hate it.
I had Yamaha FG800M ordered tonight.

After you commit to playing a guitar, you can make some simple and relatively inexpensive upgrades (bone or synthetic nut and bridge, quality tuners)…
to make it an outstanding guitar for what you originally paid. Excellent value and a keeper!

Great review! I was planning to buy a guitar in this price segment. The two guitars I'm confused between is the Orangewood Austen and Yamaha FG800. The offline stores at my place don't have an Orangewood that I can try and so it would be of great help if you tell me which to buy between two.

Over the years I've tried all most all acoustic guitars under $500 and the Fg800 is definitely the best one. The other guitar company that can compare with Yamaha is Orangewood and I've had both of their guitars, however I still prefer Yamaha for it's well balanced tone and build quality.

This guitar is my country costs $350. :-/
But I still bought it and LOVE it.
Used to have the FG700S and this one is an evident upgrade.
I also own the wonderful F310, but I think I'll sell it (it costed me $250).
I live in Bolivia, where ANY product from overseas costs double or more. :-/

Hey man, cheers for the review, awesome skills you've got! I just ordered one of these beauties for 300 in Australia, can't wait to get into it... Did you change the strings on your FG800/would recommend changing the strings?

I have had an FG800 for a couple of years, even though the.012 gauge sounds much fuller, I recommend the .011 or the .010 gauge strings.

I have anFG820 and I would recomend Elixir nanoweb 80/20 phosphor/bronze in 12/53 or what is termed "light guage" otherwise there can be issues with loss of tone and buzzing. The 12s give a nice loud, balanced rich tone in my opinion. However, strings are easily changed and can be a subjective issue, so go ahead and experiment. Have fun...

I recently bought a FG800 and heres my thoughts on it. I have recently started to collect used and in need of repair Yamaha acoustics.
    I own:
    F310
    F325
    F325D
    F335
    FD01S
    FG700
    FG800
    SLG200S
On all of the guitars I put a bone nut, intonated saddle and wood pins (ebony or rosewood). This immediately makes all of these guitars sound ridiculously better, and they already sounded pretty good stock.
Id say with the 800, i like everything but the fretboard. I would buy a 700 over an 800. But thats just me. The 700 feels more substantial in weight and the wood choice on the fretboard. The 800 has scalloped bracing, but the 700 is no slouch either. I like both guitars, but the 700 feels better, sounds better etc. You will notice there are not a lot of used 700 models for sale, i think the reason why is no one who owns them ever wants to get rid of them !
But i sit down a lot and compare the 335, 700 and 800 (my 3 favs). They all offer their own thing and i like them a lot. I would highly recommend if you can sitting down with a 700 and an 800 and choosing whichever one fits your style/needs etc. Both the best acoustics in their price range by far over any of the other big names. If you wanted a Martin that played as good and sounded as good as a 700 or 800 your in the $500+ range for a used guitar thats comprable imho. These Yamaha's dont feel cheap in my hands and a LOT of other acoustics in this price range and higher do NOT play or sound as well as these guitars do.
Of all the Yamaha's i def think the 335 is a great value and guitar, the 700 and the 800 of course are incredible for the price. But i def recommend changing the nut and saddle to a bone nut and bone intonated saddle and getting wood pins over the plastic or bone. This simple and cheap fix makes these guitars as i said much much better and they already sounded pretty good to begin with. But this trio of upgrades will blow you away.

They have different models with different wood types for different sounds. Aspen, Nato, Mahogany, Rosewood… different price points at the lower end of cost.
The build quality is still excellent for the value you paid.
