the ending is very sad. Finally, everything is over and Huan is the top woman in the country, but she has noone. probably familly yes, but her familly also have their own matter. She lost her love of her life, her best friend, her brother, her sister (well at least YuYao & YuRao are happy so she can be relieved)
even then among her harem allies, in Zhen Huan's old age only Lu Yingfei (Consort Xin) remained the last woman alive
no wonder drama!Zhen Huan's last line is "I'm tired."

But overall, yeah I liked seeing all of the things that were omitted from the drama, but then I felt like the drama was right to leave those things out if that make sense? Like I just think it was a perfect adaptation and I wish I could have watched a series like this one outlining the books, rather than actually have to read all of the novels lol
I really liked Zhenhuan’s brother and the way his story intersected with LingRong’s. But it was the right decision to cut it, along with a lot of the other consorts and their extra stories. Imagine how much longer the drama would have been!

Nooooo that was just the drama version, in the books this was a completely fictitious dynasty and characters. There's no sequel to the books. when adapting to drama they tried and placed it in a real dynasty setting and in the drama the new emperor is some random concubine's son, not doctor wen's so that's his real father only. The book zhen huan has nothing to do with ruyi and it's characters which are based on real people

Just finished watching the recap. Thank you for your hard work and bringing us this amazing story. Though tbh I prefer the drama series over the novel now 🤣 I just feel the novels like a Wattpad story full of random (but cool) scenes and drama 🧍🏽♀️The series definitely seems more crafted in terms of narrative and consistent writing (ofc it had some weird moments too) but yeah overall I really enjoyed this!! damn, and I thought drama!Lady Guwalgiya's musk necklace, and Ruyi & Gao Xiyue's Vietnamese lotus flower gold bracelets with the "basil seeds" was the only reference...
10.1. 4th prince Yurun was already enfeoffed as *Prince Chu (楚王)* prior to being bestowed the Crown Prince
10.2. *the get-well-quick elixirs were also Zhen Huan's plan* , including drama!Ye Lan'yi's cinnabar procurement activities
11.1 the Noble Lady getting pregnant was *actually referenced in the drama by the Imperial Noble Consort (Duan) catching a low-ranking concubine & an imperial guard in the act* , and the scene with him fainting & drooling blood was because drama!Zhen Huan told Yongzheng ("They can't even wait for me to die!" + making allusions to Zhen Huan's infidelity) and was awaiting orders
11.2. novel!She Lan'yi's final words were *made drama!Zhen Huan's words to Yongzheng* , and novel!Yurun's parentage over drama!Jinghe's makes Yongzheng's rage more sense

He sent those portraits to distract the harem so they wouldn't annoy him as you mentioned. I just think it's interesting how the Emperor in Ruyi and the Emperor in Yanxi are so different

Nie Yuan made it a point to portray his Qianlong Emperor with some humanity (as the Son of Heaven); even in the drama novelization, it's shown that Qianlong's various rage modes (e.g. "來人!") were due to his volatile moods & uncontrollable temper
also Gao Ningxin's dialogue: "Does [Qianlong] want a woman or a goddess?"
I think Nie Yuan did a great job at that. I kind of feel empathy towards the Emperor in Yanxi, but the Emperor in Ruyi is just scum. The one tear scene from Nie Yuan at Empress Fucha's death is so well done. It definitely portrays an impactful emotion.

Now that it’s over, I’m curious as to what you thought of Zhenhuan in the novel versus the drama? Prior I’ve often heard that Zhenhuan in the novel is more selfish, ruthless and unlikable; similarly to how Ruyi’s drama adaptation portrayed her as such a principled, moral person but in the novel she wasn’t far off from Yanwan. Would you say the characterisation difference is as dramatic here?
Ruyi in the novels was the true culprit behind Hailan’s scheming to kill the Empress Langhua’s only son. She was willing to kill Yanwan when she’ prove herself to be a threat to Ruyi, asking Hailan to do the dirty deeds for her.

In ruyi royal love in the palace , I thought that the cheating accusations were ridiculous because they were in a harem ; but in this novel everyone seems to cheat and get away with it.
the infidelity accusations between Ruyi, the Grand Monk, & Ling Yunche were actually similar to the Korean accounts of Step Empress's fall from grace
basically there were two third-hand accounts from Joseon ambassadors to Qing Dynasty during the reign of Kings Yeongjo & Jeongjo
(when I say third-hand accounts it's because the ambassadors had a hard time getting anything from their Qing equivalents, as Step Empress post-Southern Tour was treated as taboo)
TL;DR
-Qianlong Emperor and the imperial party were at the annual Mulan Hunting Ground (the location was only described as "Guandong (關東)", the historical toponym for Manchuria...ergo where else would a hunting party at the Manchurian heartland be located if not at Mulan)
-Step Empress lost a valuable jewel (described as "Korean pearl (高麗珠)")
-Qianlong ordered a search (as per usual) and eventually the lot fell onto one of Step Empress's imperial guards
-after Qianlong began to personally oversee the investigation, a further search was announced wherein the jewel and/or money from the pawning of the jewel was found on the imperial guard's house
-Qianlong then ordered a full body search, and a note was found on his person in Step Empress's calligraphy
-in a rage Qianlong cut down the imperial guard with a sword, and had Step Empress confined to house arrest and withheld food
-Step Empress then flew into a rage and The Haircut™ happened
-the ambassadors' accounts concluded the entire incident was a plot concocted by the current It Girl, then-Imperial Concubine Rong (described as "the Hui (i.e. Muslim) concubine (回后)")
