Margie was an absolute rockstar in this meeting. Her statements forced some emotion into a situation that was being treated in a painfully sterile manner. She held a mirror up to a large institution and forced them to reflect upon their treatment of her husband. She is a fierce defender and, as a wife, I feel the pain she was in.

Wow. Just wow. As a protestant Christian, I cannot imagine how this is allowed to occur. I always understood that the clergy's role was to love members, and to provide guidance and a safe place for anyone to wrestle with their doubts and questions, and to encourage them to continue in faith.

    John.
As painful as it may be to release the recordings,
You give us a real insight of how church leaders try to deflect the real issues over the image and integrity of the church.
How much power these man hold over the member’s head.
    Thank you.

I am catching up, only just viewing these videos. The more I hear about your story the more I admire you John and Margie.
Your grace and dignity shine. I am so sorry you were punished for your honesty, you never did anything wrong.
Time and time again they alienate the very best out of fear their secrets may be discovered and they will lose the power and money they have.
My daughter has cerebral palsy and loves the church, I support her in that. I make it possibly for her to be fully involved. We are back in England now.
I was baptized age 14, traveled to California as a young teen, married in the Oakland Temple and had 4 children. My boys were baptized but are not active, all work hard, the youngest working on his PhD in Delaware/Virginia.
My children’s father was a returned missionary but spent most of our married life in prison for drug offenses.
Your story breaks my heart but warms me to your family, you are amazing and beautiful people.
I would love to share my story, it is pretty dramatic across continents but complete honesty is the only way.
    Much love to your family.

Wow, Margie is a powerful communicator. She is a beautiful compliment to you. You are both so graceful and drive home a powerful sentiment. Thank you for all that you have done. I honestly lacked the bravery to move forward and outwardly voice an opinion. I just slumped away quietly so as not to disturb family. You guys are amazing.

I suddenly CRIED with compassion, empathy, and understanding as Margie so vulnerably shared her feelings, and then the tone bounced back so quickly in the response from President King. As abruptly as my tears began, the were stopped. The mission and focus President King “had been sent on”, culminated in, what appeared to be, a disconnection of his mind and his heart. His inability to respond empathetic to Margie’s tender emotions, was total rejection, not safe or open-hearted. At the same time, feeling rejected, I felt empowered in my own challenges. Margie’s strength, honesty, and her testimony of Jesus’ teachings and of John’s heart and intentions, I feel grateful. Thank you Margie and John. I know this has been painful and not an easy journey, but strengthens me in my very painful and challenging journey.
    My ❤️ is with you.

As a new listener to your podcast, this story blew my mind. How can a church have this much control over someone's life & home. Margi must be so proud of you, and I also hope your kids will understand the big picture and their Dad's courage as a true man of God if not now when they are adults. I find you to be what in my head is a righteous person❤

I’m an LMFT and I specialize in transgender kids and young adults. I relate so much as to the pain listening to LGBTQ young people’s stories and watching them struggle to survive under of the weight of prejudice of their own people. I also have my own past trauma from the church. It’s decades old. I was in an abusive marriage that I stayed in too long because of the direction to me from my bishop. Some of that old trauma reared it’s head so back to my own therapy I’ve gone, and that ended up leading me here. I’ve had 2 days off and I’ve probably listened to 20 hours of your podcasts, mostly LDS discussions. Everything is falling into place in my brain, and I begin to understand the early church history and see the thread that led directly to my own experiences. It’s incredibly healing staring down your monsters. Thank you. I did wonder exactly why you were doing this and why you had for so long. Then I find this playlist. These are your people, the Mormons, and you won’t abandon them, especially the most marginalized of your people. That’s exactly why I do what I do. I’ll fight for the most marginalized in my community. I’d do anything for these kids. I’d face down a bear for these kids, and actually seems like I’m constantly facing down metaphorical bears for them. Keep it up. Are you tired? Because I’m tired, but I know we can’t stop. I’m long worded, but thank you for this work. The understanding I’ve gained about my past in the church has lightened my burden.

At 49:43 Mr. King says he gets inspiration from Jesus Christ when he counsels, but he doesn’t see Christ in what John does on Mormon Stories.
This is the EXACT reason why religion is poisonous. First, it tells people that they have magic powers and can determine what is good, moral, or spiritual when in actuality there is no magic or power there.
Secondly, it only adds to someone’s bias. He can’t see Jesus in Mormon Stories because he is so blinded by his own bias and religion. He can’t see the reality that it isn’t about hurting the church. That’s a framing bias. It’s about THE MEMBERS. The ones that know, the ones struggling, and the ones that deserve to know THE WHOLE TRUTH. So they can make an informed decision. It’s only hurting the church because it is true and damaging to the church because of reality, not because John is out to bring the church down.

They had no interest in helping you answer your questions, they just resented you for having them.
Their doctrine is incompatible with what most people call 'truth' (what can be indisputably proven). So they either have to stop valueing the truth, or give the word it a different meaning and make it synonymous with their beliefs instead.
As someone who has never been religious, this is very interesting.

This doctor has taken the Hippocratic Oath, the central premise of which is, “First do no harm.” I firmly believe that this oath applies to the entire life and being of the person taking this oath, not just their medical practice. I would also say the same for every doctor who takes elective office. So this man decides to excommunicate you and subject you to a Inquisition-like series of torturous “investigations” or is ordered to do so from Salt Lake, and participates in secretive communications with people who lied outright to John face to face about such activity is worthy of both the old communist KGB and its new incarnation under Vladimir Putin and his kleptocratic billionaire cronies. To criticize John’s testimony because it doesn’t somehow meet orthodox standards is of the very worst kind of hypocrisy. It appears to me that what was done here is not much different than what Putin does to reporters who report on the truth, and to courageous souls who dare to try to oppose him politically. When they persist in doing what is right, they end up dead, poisoned, or in Siberia. It is your podcast and commitment to the LGBTQ community that they are after. I guess I do not understand why John and his family would want to remain affiliated with such an organization. They have betrayed everything they supposedly stand for. I do understand the role that community has for Mormons. It seems to me that that is what is being lost when good, altruistic people are being thrown out of the central organization around which their entire lives have been oriented. For what? Where in the rules does it say that no in good standing Mormon cannot have a career involving helping suicidal youth or being an active journalist? And where does it say that the children of such put of favor persons can be targeted or made fair game? Apparently this “doctor” has no intention of allowing John to defend himself against specific charges. He is not ferocious, he is a cold-hearted servant of an autocratic monstrosity. I hope that for their sake that your children stayed as far away as possible from BYU or any of its satellites. If your children are good children who keep their grades up, who have demonstrated leadership qualities, there is no reason why they couldn’t be gladly accepted at one of the top colleges elsewhere, with good scholarships. John and Margie have been shown the door by small minded people who have no business trying to keep their cult sanctimonious by tormenting people whose careers they do not approve of. One question I have of John and Margie is why do they and other still appear to be taking Joseph Smith’s word for it that all the other churches are also corrupt? For those of us who have had prior experience with different versions of mainstream Christianity, we know that in most of these churches, we are in fact free to create our own belief structures up to and including agnosticism or even atheism. That may not fit your definition of what a church is, but Buddhists, for example, have churches, some Buddhist clerics even use the title Rev. Buddhism has nothing to say about belief or non-belief in God or Jesus. Their are orders of Christian monastics who have studied with the Buddhists and who now incorporate Buddhist style meditation in their prayer life. There are those who believe that Jesus had contact with Buddhist or Zoroastrian teachings while he was in Egypt and perhaps elsewhere before returning to Palestine to begin his ministry. So if one strips away everything having to do with Joseph Smith and his teachings, that leaves one with a lot of law abiding, non-abusive Christian churches to look at as possible spiritual homes for former Mormons. Humans are spiritual beings, with the capacity to feel awestruck by the profound beauty of the earth, by beautiful music, by the implications of new knowledge being discovered in virtually every field of science, mathematics, and engineering. Whether or not God has played a role in the setting the basic laws of physics and other fundamentals that underly the functioning of everything from the tiniest subatomic particles, to the largest living things, the existence of so much water on earth, to quantum physics, and to our understanding of stars and galaxies and exploring possibilities of not just intelligent life elsewhere but even multiverse theories. Why there is anything at all in the universe rather than nothing. The ties between all of these matters and ourselves is ultimately spiritual. So I would encourage everyone who has left Mormonism or is considering doing so to remember that Joseph Smith did not invent God, Jesus, the Bible, enduring versions of Judeo Christian traditions and that when the time is right to do so, consider the real possibility that one day after you have put the Mormon structures behind you and your family, that there may be a welcoming, place for you in one of the traditional Christian churches, Asian religions, or in Judaism. You will know after some searching what is a right direction for you and your family to take and where there is cultish danger and dead ends. Be mindful, hopeful, and of good courage in the directions you take, in all that you do.

Excommunication shouldn't even exist. The whole thing makes no sense in Christian culture. Like, even the worst sinner is always welcome. Even one who speaks out against the church. And a pastor should be a shepherd. This situation seems so twisted. And I think in these high demand religious, it's a vicious cycle unfortunately.

  • @doubtingdennis

You're responses are just incredible. The way you compare the issues you're currently concerned about with the problems the church had in the past (racism, polygamy, etc) and later went back on; it was such an undeniable parallel and so powerful. I've never heard someone argue their position better than you did in all these interviews.
These men seemed to be asking you the same questions over and over. You gave honest thoughtful answers that would be perfectly acceptable in any decent church, but they gloss over what you say and ask another version of the same question! I'm also appalled how much control they are attempting to exert over your thoughts, feelings, and outside conversations. It seems so overbearing and like authoritarian micromanagement.
Lastly, you've worked so hard to help people stay in the church for decades, and they shot themselves in the foot here! I can't fathom why they don't seem to care about these hurting people you were ministering to.
Lastly, I am a gay (same-sex married) Christian, and me and my spouse can both empathize so much with your statements of being attacked/judged from both sides. Often the Christian community excludes or demeans us for being gay, but the LGBT community is usually even more hateful and critical of us for being Christian. Or for being any level of conservative on separate spiritual matters. It's so painful to feel like you don't belong unless you are an extremist.
Thank you for having the courage to share all of these conversations. It's hard to be that vulnerable and it's been a huge blessing to me and I'm sure many others. ❤

Bryan King comes off as an extreme narcissist. He loves pointing out how he’s the president and everything is “I....” So hard listening to this. I love how Margi boldly addresses all her valid concerns and goes at him.
Makes me so upset how he accuses John of teaching false doctrine. So typical for Mormons like Bryan King to be ignorant of church doctrine and church history and then accuse the messengers to be spouting false doctrine because it makes them feel uneasy! LDS members need to educate themselves. Especially these men who have the ability to excommunicate members.

I truly disliked the priesthood leader, talking over Margi. That was gross to me. The arrogance of using his power position as a surgeon, to make him sound better than everybody else, and then speaking over, Margi, brought back so much anger in my soul for church leaders, who did this to me repeatedly, before I had my records removed. When the stake president prayed about the upcoming "interview", the Lord told him to LISTEN. He tried... Even caught himself once being mouthy. But ultimately he couldn't hold back his prejudices, preconceptions and misconceptions. So much for sincere prayer and obedience to the Lord's guidance.
It's astonishing for a member to criticize their brother because the latter's testimony isn't "good enough" or "didn't include the right words"! For a church leader to deny blessings to a faithful member because the leader feels self-doubt, misgivings and a guilty conscience.
Thanks for sharing this. I can understand why Pres King wouldn't want anyone to know the truth about his personal ethics. It's interesting that he tried to deceive you about central headquarters involvement. How would it have changed events if he admitted, "I've been commissioned by Pres Monson himself!"

It's interesting that he says the inspiration he received while praying about it was to listen, which seems like a direct quote from Bishop Stephensons conversation with John. The game was matched with a 'can I take notes', and 'no I'm not recording' from John. Sometimes you have to watch out for yourself, and that's a good thing. ❤️

I thought the stake president was genuinely trying to hear John and I appreciated his straightforwardness. I expected him to be way worse. He said he had experienced a faith crisis but obviously he's never deeply questioned or he'd understand John's approach to his testimony. He just wasn't in a position to truly understand. Unfortunately, men who don't understand get to be the judge of others.

I agree. King’s pain was obvious and sincere in that he told John that the issues are substantial for the institution and clearly doctrinal. Indeed, they are as substantial as Luther’s 95 Theses. As for John merely claiming to have expressed his concerns out loud, our guy was a bit disingenuous with that, given that he had built up a considerable public following. For those who don’t like Johns ideas for change, it becomes a challenge that is unacceptable. Sadly, the church’s rigid claim to infallibility is its soft underbelly. Poor King has no recourse other than to rest his case on faith and the joy of fellowship. In this debate he is no match for John, but he was honest, sincere, and clearly exhausted by Johns persistence. Who wouldn’t be? 🤣😍

He stated that when he looked in the eyes of the man who had been gathering information on you and lying about it that he knew his heart was good... it implies that he doesn't get that from hours of investigation from you. The whole dialogue is so stressful and hurtful. Just know what you are doing has value. I'm not Mormon but I have learned so much from your podcasts about social issues and how that affects people so deeply. How Antithetical to the words of Jesus in the New Testament about LOVE. When the church, (I can only speak from the perspective of the evangelical church) does not want to hold people accountable, they call them imperfect people. Apparently seems to be a universal symbol for the “yes, but” argument. It’s insane to me that people can stomp all over the words of Jesus Christ in the name of righteousness.. but it shouldn’t be. The new testament records the religious leaders at the time of Jesus Christ doing the same thing. Much love for the podcast. ❤

I'm not sure if Bryan King is a good person or a bad person, or if the members of your ward that were acting like KGB agents are good or bad, I don't know them and don't care to know them. But your right about one thing, institutions like the Mormon church, creates an environment that enables good people to do bad things. Unfortunately it is true of all religions, cults, or organizations that require strict obedience.

I can understand that you have lots of ties to the church and didn’t want to be excommunicated. However, I don’t think I would want to be a part of a church that uses words like investigation, disciplinary council, and excommunication!

They show that they are all about preserving the hierarchy and their power, nothing else 🤬 They couldn’t care less about people being suicidal from the shame created by their doctrines. John has come earnestly and humbly but they just spout the same crap to him.

The top leaders throw him under the bus to excommunicate you without the backlash coming to themselves. Then he says he's thought about this prayerfully as if he hadn't received direction from anyone, I guess except by default, god. I imagine the cognitive dissonance must be overwhelming for him.

It upsets me that the church would go as far as releasing stake presidents and bishops that didn’t excommunicate him. This shows more of a corporation than a church directed by god. It feels very icky to me. Becasue if the church says that in order to have salvation and eternal LIFE people need to receive all the covenants of the temple, well by excommunicating someone they are taking away someone’s potential of eternal LIFE. Personally for me if you say eternal life is more important than earth life, then you need to be jsut a vigilant as protecting their eternal life (pro-life) as you are of advocating for all human life on earth (pro-life). In other words you can say that you stand for pro-life and then kick someone out the church, damning their opportunity for eternal life.

One rule about all these "Common Judges In Israel" is that most of them (not all, but most) are *intimidated* by strong-minded women who speak their minds and defend their husbands when they are under attack. Melchizedek Priesthood holders like his royal majesty King Bryan are indoctrinated to regard all women and subservant and submissive to them at all times, inside church and out.
If you, as a visitor to a Mormon sacrament meeting are greeted by men eager to shake your hand and welcome you but *don't* introduce their wives to you, even though they're standing nearby, there's a reason for all that. To them, their wives are just potted plants.

Orthodox Christianity is very similar. Many “traditional” men cannot handle being outsmarted by a baby machine that can dish it back just as calmly and coolly. The relationship between the level of insecurity to extent of embarrassment is I dare say practically lethal.🤣 It’s incredible; as if she bears some outlandish duty to inform him that “oh yeah, btw: I’m way smarter than you.”

Uncommon take here. And just FYI, this is coming from someone that has been out of the church for nearly 20 years now. Before the CES letter, etc. I fully support John, I see a ton of value in Mormon Stories, and listen often. But I see the Church's stance here. When the SP says "what keeps you here?" I agree with this. WHy not just leave? John's response was what keeps him around is generalities of love, repentance, etc., which just seems like he is toying with them. John is smart enough to know these are generalities are extant in many many different religions. The church has specific dogma, and John doesn't agree with the dogma. End of story. Should be a clean split. I have no idea why he is even trying to remain in. Seems like this whole thing, sessions and sessions long, hours and hours, and in John's life, years and years, literally. I would also suspect ulterior motives.

Why did you tell the Stake President you weren’t recording when you were. I gasped when you said no I’m not recording, then who was recording? It really struck me that you lied. I’ve been listening to your podcasts for a while now and learning things I wasn’t aware of that dissapointed me and led me to reevaluate things that I have believed since I joined the church many years ago and always held fast to. I am sad. This is leading me to do my own due diligence. Thank you for that. I guess I am having my own crisis of faith.

If they had just done a little bit of research, they would have known that you were stating true facts about church history and teachings that don't quite add up. It is sad and shocking to see that you were excommunicated for basically telling the truth. It is shameful that everybody who exposes the truth and spreads it, is barred from the church, attending church, having the community to help you grow spiritually, going to the temple and all. I just do not believe that this is something Jesus would have done.
Listening to these tapes, you can feel that they were really trying to push you out of the church, which is very upsetting. I wish we had more people like you in the church. In this day and age, it is impossible to hide all the church history and the church finally needs to become clean with its history instead of quieting its members.
Like you, I wanted the church to be true, the church leaders to be the direct mouthpiece of God, the Book of Mormon and the Book of Abraham to be historic records. I see the good fruit that comes from the church. I love the community and love all the good and inspiring people around me. I'm willing to invest so much in order to be a good member, keep the rules and all. However, knowing that we are not allowed to spread the truth is very upsetting, and I'm not sure what to make of all this.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. You are amazing!
