Stanage Bamford Loop - Peak District Gravel Ride

- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- Another great, gravel ride in the Peak District. Starting at Thornhill we follow the trail to Ladybower Reservoir. From here we cross the Snake Pass road on our way to Brigde-end Pasture and down to Bamford. We then climb up to Stanage Edge. From here we go to Lady Canning's Plantation, where there are two fun packed MTB trails, which are ideal for gravel/cyclo-cross bikes. Using the Houndkirk gravel road we nip down to Hathersage and then up to Shatton Moor.
In total it is 36 miles (57.5 km) long with 1,338m of climb.
If you have any suggestions for rides in the Peaks please post below. I would love to hear from you!

Awesome video Julie. Don't know if you knew but there is a bike repair station at the back of the Angler's Rest pub in Bamford, worth knowing.
That's useful, cheers.
Thanks for your positive comment. Hopefully see ya out on the trail sometime.
This looks great fun! Thanks for sharing 👍
It is fun enjoy and thanks for your comments
Great video - keep them coming 👍
Thanks for your lovely comment . Now we have more freedom there will be more. Looking forward to doing them
loving your videos Julie, just my kinda trails. also like the description and mini-map you do as a pre-ride intro ... great stuff :-)
Thank you for your lovely comment. Much appreciated.
Great video, i really enjoyed that, i was impressed with you riding the lady cannings on a gravel bike haha, great job 👍
Thankyou and a huge thanks for putting your comment on here . Riding a cx in there is a full body experience but was fun. I have ridden a lot of Follow the dog and the Monkey route on one too at Cannock . You have to go with the flow and check your false teeth are secure. I actually have a lovely carbon 29er but I rather like the technical challenge on my 'go anywhere ' bike lol . Cheers . May be see you on the trails sometime
Thanks for the GPX file and the time taken to make this video, looking forward to this in a few weeks time when lockdown is over
You are most welcome . Once lockdown lifts a bit there's lots more to come . I am thinking of a mixture of gravel and mtb routes. Take care and have fun . Love reading comments on here. Cheers
Rode this route today and really enjoyed it! Thanks Julie, you are UA-cam gold - keep the videos coming.
So pleased for you. It is wonderful- loads of variety eh? Thank you so much for your comments on here. You've brought a huge smile to my face. It's not always easy doing stuff like this . I actually love creating videos but sometimes the rewards seem few and far between. However comments like yours drive me forwards. Cheers David, from the bottom of my heart . Have fun.
Looks a great route, ill head up and give it a go sometime. thanks Julie
Thanks for this lovely comment. It really is a great route. Enjoy
Looks like a cracking route, and Lady Cannings is on the list of places I need to take the eldest. We'll definitely give this one a try!
Cheers. It's a fun place .Enjoy .Thanks for commenting
I'm just planning a weekend away in the Peaks. Used to ride there a lot when living in Sheffield so know a few routes but this one looks great and uses some tracks I've never been on. Not too far either with plenty of potential cakes stops 🙂
It's my favourite because of the scenery and you can have a play in Lady Cannings. Hope it goes well. Quite muddy at the moment up to Shatton on the BW section . Think that's called Offerton Moor ??? I rode most of that bit the other week but I am a mud rider lol Enjoy
@@JuliePhelanExplore thanks for the reply. We’re planning to go end of June so hopefully it’ll be dry 😄
Great ride! Done a few bits of it but now definitely on my 'to do' list to include all the trails you covered. Thanks for sharing. Never been to Lady Cannings plantation, going to have to take the mtb to that one too at some point.
Thanks for your lovely comment. I really enjoy Lady Cannings and it is cool trick to ride it at full gas on a gravel/ cx bike. I think on an mtb you just go even faster and take off more lol Enjoy
@@JuliePhelanExplore ha! Look forward to a bit of that. Will have to try it on both bikes. I’m sure they will both bring a huge grin. Keep up with the cycling and great vlogs.
Looks like a beautiful ride! I wish we had more of this in British Columbia!
Thanks . Surely not! You have amazing countryside. What is access like?
@@JuliePhelanExplore I live in Vancouver, so it's a little more challenging to find the kinds of trails and quaint country roads that you're riding!
I am surprised!
One of the best routes I’ve ever done. Absolutely cracking! Solid slog up to that aerial… 🤣
Its brilliant eh? It is a slog but the views are ace. Did you have a headwind? I am near Tideslow today . So pleased you liked it. It's a tough but satisfying route with achievable climbs. Well done :-) Treat yourself to a pint :-).Did you do it on a gravel / cx or mountain bike ?
Hi Julie, loving these videos. Fairly new to gravel riding so learning lots and loving the help you're giving me with navigating routes around the Peaks. Can I ask what cleats and pedals you normally use for your gravel riding?
Thank you 😊 I am using Crank Brothers Egg Beaters because I have been racing cross for the last 10 years . They are are very popular for cross because they do not clog up with mud . However I would recommend SPDs (Shimano) for gravel because they have a bigger surface area to put your foot on and may last longer. ( Egg Beaters have more moving parts and wear quicker. They are also smaller.) You will need SPD cleats on your shoes . Hope that helps. If you need any more help, give me a shout !
Great gravel ride. You'll have all the enduro lads upset riding along the ridge line above Ladybower without 160mm of suspension 🤣 That climb up to Shatton is a killer last time I went up the road that you would have joined just just before the final push to the mast. I then went off Bradwell Edge.... That would certainly be interesting on a gravel bike. 😳
Re: Bradwell - why do ya think I didnt do it? lol I have a beautiful 29er but i am doing a lot of these rides on a cross bike because a lot of people are interested in that. To be honest , you'll be amazed what you can ride on a ridged set up. It does require a certain mind set lol ! I have thought to myself ' if you can ride the 3 Peaks cx on 33mm tyres you can do this . Its exciting lol . Thanks for your comments on this page. It would be great to read a few more. Happy riding
@@JuliePhelanExplore I know the joys of riding rigid.... Dud the lake district back in about 1993 with a mate not a single mm of travel except from the tyres. We survived and as you say it is fun..... Scary fun! 🤣👍
I think it makes you a better rider then when you move over to front suspension you see the benefit . Good choice of lines ; ability to flow over the rough and generally good bike handling
@@JuliePhelanExplore I only moved over to a Full Suss in 2015 so I should be amazing 🤔....
To be honest I'd love a full suss fir playing
Hi Julie- love your videos and it's inspired me to record and share some good Gravel Loops around Sheffield. I was just wondering what GoPro mount you use while riding on the bike as it's a nice angle of getting some of the bars but not the classic "Arm Tunnel" you get on GoPro chest mounts! Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Sometimes I ride with a chest harness if the terrain is very rough . If it’s simple , I do like to use a surfers mouth mount because they are quick to attach a camera to. Hope that helps. Your positive comment is very much appreciated. Need any more help just ask. Julie
For that particular video you have been watching, all on bike, straight ahead stuff, was probably done with a mouth mount.
Have you seen this video about the kit I use?

I also have a GoPro 10 now as well.
@@JuliePhelanExplore Thanks- will check this out for sure 😀
This looks amazing! Great video! Do you have the GPX file for the route? Cheers and keep up the good work!
Cheers . It is a fab route . There is a gpx file below my comments . Any problems , just say . Thanks for commenting. Enjoy
@@JuliePhelanExplore brilliant. Will load that up to my Wahoo and give the route a go!!
Nice video - Houndskirk and Lady Cannings were my first experience of gravel riding! Are the routes from these videos online somewhere so that they can be downloaded?
Thanks for your nice comment. The routes can be download from my UA-cam page . Look in the video description where it says 'read more'. If you still cant find it let me know. Cheers
@@JuliePhelanExplore Thanks for the quick reply - that’s a few winter weekends sorted!
Really hope you enjoy them. Let me know on here how you get on.
Amazing! What camera do you use for filming?
Go Pro Hero 8. Thanks for your comment. Any questions just ask. My partner lectures in video and photography.
This video shows you the kit

Hi can you, download this route for Garmin?
Hi Kevin. As you are probably aware, Garmin use .tcx files. However all of the Garmins I have used will import the universal .gpx files. Just import it to the NewFiles folder on your device. If you are still having issues let me know and I will convert it for you. Email me via my About Page. Hope this helps. Julie
Hi, what gearing did you have?
46, 34 on the front and 11- 36 on the back. I have a medium cage rear mech with an extension. I hope thats helpful. Its my favourite ride.
