    I tried to complete Hard Rock of The Peak, solo.
    Routes in video:
    Right unconquerable HVS 5a
    Valkyrie HVS 5a
    Elder Crack E2 5c
    Alcasan E2 5b
    Chee Tor Girdle VS 4c
    Surplum E1 5b
    Suicide Wall HVS 5b
    On the solo challenge i decided not to do Debauchery E1 5b, which lies just outside of the Peak District boundaries. However I went back a few weeks later and completed all the routes (including Debauchery) with a climbing partner and a more satisfying time. The solo challenge with Debauchery added can be the joy for someone else 😉👌

    The UA-cam algorithm kindly led me to this channel after a morbid evening spent watching failed Everest summit attempts. Everything I've watched has been awesome but the stuff with Toby Segar is particularly inspiring and great. After watching those videos I've decided to start climbing, first indoor session lined up for this weekend. Early days yet but feel really motivated to give it a good shot. Just wanted to thank Pete, Tom and Toby for all of the motivation they gave me after watching their content!

I'm now 47 ... currently 24 stone ... and am motivated to do some climbing .. maybe not the best idea haha but I've been taking my 6 year old daughter bouldering and climbing in the Northeast and it has reignited a bit of passion for it. Nice to see some outdoor content and as an ex photographer and videographer who used to live on the edge of the Peaks in Sheffield it was a pleasure to see some of the stunning scenery. There's a similar event in Finland called Kustavi Derby which is held on some summers. There you have to trad climb as many routes with your team in 24 hours as possible. You'll get a 0.1 coefficient per different crag you climb, as well as the difficulty grade. you need to walk or bike between crags. When it's finished you eat and bathe in sauna and sit by a fire. I've heard it's a great event. I hope to go someday.

    My local crag is circle of volcanic rock with circumference just over 1km and it is possible to be climbed relatively safely all around. Locals keep a ladder of best times. This is only reason why I climbed with sport watch. Last time I made a big move to nice large pocket just to find there a wasp nest. I shit you not one wasp got stuck under my watch and kept stinging. I fell around 1.5-2 meters and quickly removed the watch. Luckily I was just stung multiple times, but no real injury.
    What came to my mind was if this would happen to anyone soloing really high that could be quite troublesome. I am certain that you would withstand a pain facing a deadly fall. But sensation at surprise would be quite unpleasant.

    Scrap the hybrid and go for a full mountain bike next time. Get a sprung seat (soft and comfy seat too) and some front suspension, with medium tyres.
    Trust me, those road sections won't suffer very much, but the off-road bits? Dude.
    You'll be SO glad that you have thicker tyres and a bit of suspension!
    It's always a trade off, but the road sections are better to trade away than those off road bits, which will sap your energy when you're on thin tyres and especially if you have no "give" with a solid frame like that. Sore bum territory. Hard on your calves. Hard on your arms... It's much better to trade road speed for good comfy off-road ability. Those off-road bits will take a lot more out of you than you expect.
    If you're going to compromise, compromise more on the road sections than the offroad. Road is easy. A good mountain bike is a good thing on roads anyway.
    Offroad is HELL with the wrong bike! Hell!
    Hybrid is a fake category. Every bike is a trade-off.

    😉
    Bit of practice and you might avoid smashing your knees to bits! But then, you'd have less time to practice dangling like a damn superhero freak of nature under dodgy British bridges above close to frozen water! Haha.
    Edit: also the "quick before he overtakes me" - fast cut to the biker already in front - welp, this is a climbing channel! Haha.
    Jk.

Then... undoing previous anchor and swinging over in a huge dangerous choss-grating pendulum, and jumar up to the new anchor which you now hang off of? You also didn´t bring 6 ropes for 6 pitches, so... *wot* ?

      Fix rope at new anchor. Climb back to previous anchor clipping all the pieces as you go. Retrieve the previous anchor and reclimb the pitch taking the gear out.
      You can take the gear on the second lap, but you then need a fixed anchor and good rope management to lower out, or else you'd have to leave gear behind.

    By using the revo are you hoping it will lock out if you fall on the rope solo?

    • @WideBoyz
      @WideBoyz  2 роки тому

      That is correct. However it's not a solo device and I don't recommend using it for that. The length of fall seems to vary

    Nice video - though, having climbed some of these routes (and dreamed of climbing the others), I felt strangely sad to see these grit/limestone mega-classics treated as joyless 'ticks'. I'm sure that wasn't the intention..maybe I'm just becoming a grumpy humbly Hector Mildew ;-)

    Wait I don't understand how the rope solo works on the traverse lol. You lead the pitch, you then go in reverse to retrieve gear, but then what? You re-climb it again with no gear, risking a massive swing onto your anchor?

    • @rellify3
      @rellify3 2 роки тому

      @@maximilianpierce5115 That's what you do when the pitch is vertical, but I'm talking about the traverse pitches

    • @WideBoyz
      @WideBoyz  2 роки тому +2

      Climb the pitch. Reverse the pitch on a fixed line clipping all the pieces as you go. Clean the pitch on the way back to your high point (or side point). Don't strip the gear on the second time back across the traverse. It is possible to do that but then you'd have to do lower outs etc, which is not possible without fixed anchors

    may i ask what's your reasoning for rope soloing instead of free soloing both traverses you did? it seemed like you got them in the bag! it didnt seem like you'd be in any risk of slipping or falling to your death, so free soloing would've been a lot more efficient no? for the sake of the challenge? or is this just editing's magic ha

    • @moonti6820
      @moonti6820 2 роки тому +1

      Because the rock is crappy at times and could break without warning on the traverses whereas the other solos where done on really good rock.
