@sandy-mr: I know right? I was watching her playlist of breads...and on it was a starter dough recipe...and it was just water and flour...feed it each day and voila! My fiance graduated law school in San Francisco and always wants sour dough bread...it's water and flour...duh me! It does taste better with yogurt and flour...but still...that's all it is.
Oh Mrs.Brown you are my Heart when the world is Sad I can watch hours of you in my home we have Puppies and GRANDCRAZIES ,but we could be neighbors heck we are ,God Bless !
I've watched this several times and my new starter is in progress. I appreciate the detailed explanation of how to not just make starter, but how to live with it. I don't have to make bread every day. Using the discard every day for breakfast, etc makes a lot of sense!
I love waffles and I love sour dough, this looks easy Thank you for sharing. The sound of children laughing is music to my ears. The chicks are so load. I remember as a child my dad ordered chicks and they came in the mail in a cardboard box with holes in them. I remember how fun it was picking up them babies. Bless you friend love ya.
I know they just kept getting louder, we are moving them to the back porch tonight with a heat lamp, I love having this sourdough starter around, good for so many things, thanks for watching my friend, God Bless, xoxoxo
Rosanna, I have the same memory of going to the local Post Office in our small Minnesota town and picking up the chicks in those cardboard boxes with the holes. When they came in, that rural Post Office had stacks of them all over the small lobby if you could even call it a lobby. You could hardly walk inside. Good farm memories from way back in the day!
I always wanted to learn how to make a starter and bake sour dough bread. Now I know how! Thank you! I always thought it was too difficult to maintain. You showed me that it isn’t, and I can do it, also! Sure do appreciate you!
Miss Lori, I have just been out and bought a little waffle maker, I have some starter already on the go, so come Sunday morning it will be waffles for breakfast in my small house in England's smallest city. You have such a way with you that I just want to make everything YOU make. You make everything so easy too, so many cookbooks make out sourdough starter to be so mysterious and complicated and of course, it's not. I think people are afraid to cook nowdays because there are too many elaborate recipes and methods for what should be very simple things. You and Mr Brown are just delightful. I love you both.
I did a starter YEARS ago. (I'm talking decades! LOL) I allowed the job and kids and general responsibilities to get me sidetracked from it. I'm afraid I don't have the energy anymore to do it, but this was a great and REALLY informative video, as you always do, girl. God bless.
Thank you soo much! Your teaching things that people in the city have forgotten! We all need these skills, I'm addicted to your videos and wish I lived in Arkansas!!!
Mrs. Lori, you are just amazing with ALL your knowledge, and how simple you explain it to us. THANK YOU!😁 I know I always say this, but you really are such a blessing, and such a precious spirit!! ❤️xoxo ps. It’s 2:20am, and I should be trying to sleep, but I’m watching Whippoorwill Hollar videos with Mrs. Lori 😁 Love ‘em all! ☺️
Thank you so much for all your help getting me started with both sour dough starters. I have made waffles , biscuits, cookies and coffee cake. I like the yogurt and sour cream starter the best . Thanks again and God Bless .
Oh wow, thanks for the starter. Yours is so simple. I have one but it drives me crazy keeping up with the different things you have to do. lol I'll try it. God Bless you two!
I have been watching UA-cam videos on how to start a sour dough starer and have attempted a couple lol but was a complete failure until I ran across yours the other day and yaaaaayyyyy!!!! I have finally found the perfect starter. Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you! I have tried sourdough starter twice and failed. Didn't realize you should let it get to room temp before feeding. I'll have to try your recipe and see if I can finally get it right!
Thank you for this recipe. I will be making my first starter tomorrow. I remember my grandmother's starter that she kept on the cupboard and her sourdough rolls.
Those waffles look delicious Lori! Will definitely make your starter. Still laughing at your assistants “Don’t call me Vanna” comment. Lol. Love you guys!
I love this video and been going back to it ..thank you for writing amounts as I can't recall alot....your grandbabies and that chick so cute yo here to....tjays a real country cabin full of love and god....
I cannot thank you enough for sharing your sourdough starter recipe - its been years and years since I kept sourdough in my home - mine was from my mom who got hers from an incredible woman - an Alaskan native who git it from her mom - needless to say that starter was a treasure and I made bread by hand with it all the time - so again many thanks darlin for this recipe- its absolutely foolproof!!!! hugs from Anchorage Alaska 🦋
Oh Joule, thank you, what a treasure! Someone ask me how old some of my starters were, my oldest is 2 years old, my mother in law had one for years! God Bless, xoxoxo
I just love your kitchen, so old fashioned homey. How neat to have Vanna, your lovely assistant. Sorry you had the flu. Papa Bruce and I both got it, too. Still regaining our strength. I hope you get well soon.
I just ate my first little waffles from this recipie and, yummo....i subbed o oil for butter, and out of vanilla so I subbed little cinomen in mix....yhank you for a great recipie mrs lori, i also used my starter I made from your recipie on this video, i made little over week ago....oh thank Mr Brown too for help make this....
oh my word I have to let you know that this morning for my husbands breakfast I made up your recipe for sourdough waffles BUT I made pancakes with it this time ( yes I made your waffles the other day and he was over the rainbow he was sooo very thrilled with them ) I cannot tell you just how beyond incredible these pancakes were - I have never in my life had such amazingly tender flavourful pancakes in my life. He told me he will never ever eat any other pancake except for pancakes made with your waffle recipe!! 🦋 I’m giving my oldest son who lives up in Fairbanks a pint jar of my incredible starter along with one of my turquoise quart canning jars so he can make a large batch if needed - so darlin my family here in Alaska thanks you from the bottom of our hearts for your sharing this most fantastic recipe for sourdough starter - hugs n kisses from Anchorage Alaska 🤗💫⭐️✨🦋
I am so thankful for your easy to follow sourdough starter. I have been afraid to try in the past, but you made it so easy for me. You are greatly appreciated! Thank you for your kindness in giving me the courage to try!! 😊
I'm gonna give this a try. I've been struggling trying to get my starter going. I've tried several different recipes, and keep failing. I'm so frustrated but I'm hoping this will be the one that works. Thank you!!!
Hello! I’ve always have wanted to make sourdough bread but was intimidated by making starter... you have simplified the process very nicely ! I’m going to try this methods... love your soothing voice .Blessing on you and your🦋
I could watch you all the time! Looks wonderful and now I want waffles for supper. Yummm. Yes, hot toddy is the best for that nagging cough. God bless you. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Thank you so much for this video ! I've been smiling all the way through it. How could you not; with excellent assist from Mr. Brown, and Mrs.Browns lovely demeanor and flawless instruction; "enhanced" with sweet granddaughters' baby chicks: Chirping. peep. peep. peep. peep. peep.....just loved it all ! This is life ! Loving and living, you two are the greatest !!
I havent had real sourdough anything since I was young. Thank u for this I knew that I needed the sourdough mix but was like....they cooked all the time....and I worried I'd mess it up. Lol. You simplified it in my mind. I'm gonna try and get some goodies made.
I was given a starter years ago from a lady at church , and I didn't know what to do with it.....Now I am going to try this one.....You make it sound so easy....and it sounds like it would be amazingly delicious......I could just taste those waffles when you were rubbing that butter on them and pouring that syrup.....OM Word, My mouth is watering..... Thanks honey, it's gonna be good.
I had to back track to find the starting video, but so excited to have found your recipe and get started. You videos are always wonderful ,thorough, easy to understand. Thank you dear sister for all the time spent sharing your homesteading knowledge. Blessings from Dee and Gee in the land of enchantment♥️♥️
Oh my goodness! Never heard of this. I’m gonna try it!! Those waffles look delicious too. Those eggs looks HUGE!! And... it the sound of the baby chick. Adorable!!
Hello dear lady, hope your feeling better. Thank you for sharing this recipe, it seems really easy, I have never done sourdough, but I am going to try this and the waffles. They look amazing, and I love waffles, blessings sweet friend
That was the best description of how to do a sour dough starter...I’m looking forward to trying it. I’m alone, so if I refrigerate it, how long before I would need to discard and feed it again, once it’s room temp? I saw one person post one week, but wanted your opinion. Thanks and God bless.
Made your starter recipe a few days ago and just made the sourdough waffles. Amazing and so easy. I make homemade yogurt and I used that. I'm on spring break from 'distance teaching' so catching up on what I love to do...homemade cooking and baking! Yummy!
Thank you for this sourdough recipe! I have been using the flour and water recipe with fair results. I will try yours starting tomorrow! My grandson and my daughter made us funnel cakes for dessert today! So yummy!
I was watching a you tube and they dont throw away their excess. He pours it in a skillet with a little oil and fries a cup of starter, maybe cut up some chives to put over it and some herbs. It really looked good and I will definetly try that. Just thought I would throw that in and perhaps share with others. Love watching what you do and will make some banana bread right now with my starter.
Good job Vanna (Mr. B)! Teehee. Ladies, I've been making and using a starter for all the years I've cooked and I am 81 now. Never have I thrown out any, nor have I let it warm to room temperature before feeding or using. May I ask what is the purpose of doing those things? please. We love everything made with sourdough. It's wonderful stuff and is loaded with potent "B" vitamins along with probiotics. .Very good food for humans. Love your channel.
Thanks Patricia, I love and appreciate your wisdom, you know all the research I've done on starter, it's almost what ever works best for you, they say putting it in the fridge slows it down, which is a good thing sometimes, bringing it to room temp before feeding, I guess it will start feeding faster, but motto is what works best for you, back in the day, they would take starter out on the chuck wagons, be out on the trail for days, they used it for biscuits, bread, cornbread, etc. Thank you so much, I always love hearing from you, God Bless.
Hi Miss Lori, I love this video. I love waffles and sourdough!! I've got to try this recipe, but first I have got to go to the store and get some Greek yogurt. That will be my job after I go to the hospital to pick up my hubby. He had some heart problems the other day after dialysis, but he's better now and ready to come home. But he'll have to wait awhile before we can have some sourdough waffles. Mr. Brown should have showed himself. He is precious and you two make the cutest couple. Thank you for sharing this video. God bless you both and your channel. Merry Christmas 2020.
Waffles look good. I recently got a Presto Flip side belgian waffle iron that I'm real pleased with and it didn't break the bank. It has ceramic grids so no nasty teflon. If you happen to get one-whatever you do-don't season it as I learned from studying many reviews. No sticking at all and stores in a skinny place.
Lori,. I am going to try this. I've never seen one started with yogurt and buttermilk. It sounds like extra flavor to me. I love your kitchen with all the shelves and the large wooden work surface around your stove. Did your husband build all that for you? Did you design it?
Thanks Loretta, I hope you like this starter as much as I do, yes I designed it, the Mennonites built my little cabin for us, it's small, but we love it, I want it to look like a cabin, but i have to have workspace too, Thanks for watching, God Bless
You have one of the coziest down to earth kitchens I have ever seen, wish my kitchen was in a countryside!😍😍 Out of curiosity, where does Whipporwill Holler come from, it is so unique?! Love your simple down to earth teaching method, thank you! 👩🍳👌👏👏👍💖💖
Regina, just make sure, you keep it fed, and either use it at least once or twice of week. Or discard a cup, then feed it, I never have had any problems with it, xoxoxo
I tried for the first time to do a starter. Probably not warm enough in my house. By morning it was just yogurt and buttermilk. I decided to add the half cup flour but I knew it would not do anything. I added it to more flour and buttermilk and made biscuits. I did want to waste it so I tried with biscuits. Not bad.
I'm going to make this sourdough starter tonight, I just learned to make your sandwich bread and love it, but the stores around where I live are all sold out of yeast due to the COVID-19 crisis. So, time to experiment with the sourdough! Thanks for the recipe!
This was so very interesting Lori! I have never heard of starting a starter with yogurt and the buttermilk has to make this super yummy 🤤 songood for you! I do make my own kefir and yogurt from my kefir but now I really want to try this starter. Vickie’s Country Home has so many good tips too on sour dough, she helped me make my first loaf of sour dough bread and it was delicious! Mary at Mary’s Nest has lots of good ideas too, I love all 3 of you helpful ladies. Now onto making this starter and those waffles.... oh my, I cannot wait! Love you lady have a super Sunday and God Bless you and “Vanna” 😜
Just mixed up my first batch of your sour dough starter. I had some I made over 10 years ago from red cabbage leaves. It was ignored for to long and got moldy. I tossed it a few weeks ago. I wish I had kept a bit from the bottom of the jar. Live and learn,
Ms Lori I'm so glad i found your channel! I absolutely love your approach to cooking, canning, baking, and all you've demonstrated. You have so much to tell i have soo much to learn, lol, but you're a wonderful teacher and i thank you for doing these videos! I 'like' them all... How do you know how much starter to put in a recipe? Or even what recipe to add it to? Thank you again and God bless you and your family ♥️😁
i use watkins vanilla ,too, and other flavorings,i think its priced not to high..really good quality.a few years ago, i got 2 huge vanillas when king author had great sale, the best ever vanilla i ever seen,my freinds in wv,had went down in texas and their freind gifted them with a oh so good and not expensive pint of authentic mexican vanilla....
I'm thankful for your simple sourdough starter recipe. My goodness, other ppl make it sound like rocket science. ty.

Rosanna so nice to get a positive comment about it! I was sure there would be atleast one hater from Avery and her little chicks 🐣

I'll have to check that out, xoxoxo
Thank you! When you have to discard starter your chickens will eat it and it's good for them.
You have one of the coziest down to earth kitchens I have ever seen, wish my kitchen was in a countryside!😍😍 Out of curiosity, where does Whipporwill Holler come from, it is so unique?! Love your simple down to earth teaching method, thank you! 👩🍳👌👏👏👍💖💖
I'll have to try the sourdough starter. My starter was just made with half whole wheat, half AP and water. Equal ratio in weight.
I just want to know how you do it all?? You're AMAZING ❤️
Thanks very educational
Yummy..blessings
Ms. Lori I have been trying to get a sourdough starter recipe for a couple of months now I can’t wait to try yours
Regina, just make sure, you keep it fed, and either use it at least once or twice of week. Or discard a cup, then feed it, I never have had any problems with it, xoxoxo
Thank you ❤️
Thank you Mr Lori and I hope you will get better soon :)
Thank you , I'm better, it's just that silly cough, xoxoxo
I tried for the first time to do a starter. Probably not warm enough in my house. By morning it was just yogurt and buttermilk. I decided to add the half cup flour but I knew it would not do anything. I added it to more flour and buttermilk and made biscuits. I did want to waste it so I tried with biscuits. Not bad.
Definitely going to try this! Feel better soon!
Thank you, it really does make a good starter, It never fails, I start talking, then I start coughing, geeze! Xoxoxo
Super yummy. Your subs are moving up quickly lady and much deserved. My hubs has said many times you will have a great successful channel.
Thank you, so much, kind words, xoxoxo
Thanks for doing the video :) I can’t wait to make this
Thanks Mrs Brown🙋🏻♀️💙💙
I'm going to make this sourdough starter tonight, I just learned to make your sandwich bread and love it, but the stores around where I live are all sold out of yeast due to the COVID-19 crisis. So, time to experiment with the sourdough! Thanks for the recipe!
A good active starter will work good, use to, back in the day, they didnt have yeast, a starter was all they had, xoxoxo
Thank you sweet friend, so many good recipes out there, and using your homemade yogurt, couldn't be better! Xoxoxo
Just mixed up my first batch of your sour dough starter. I had some I made over 10 years ago from red cabbage leaves. It was ignored for to long and got moldy. I tossed it a few weeks ago. I wish I had kept a bit from the bottom of the jar. Live and learn,
Starter from cabbage leaves??? Interesting, xoxoxo
Thank you so much for your support, and kind words, God Bless, xoxoxo

Lori do you add a half cup of flour to the yogurt and buttermilk mix the day you start making the sourdough starter.
