I just spent well over two years growing out my gray. Here's my advice as I did this...I started with jet black hair. I got tired of the upkeep. I threw bleach in my hair not to go blonde, but to lift the black. I then used level 2 to add color back in the hair, to a dark blondish. And then I used purple shampoo to keep it ashy and ward off the blorange hair. Sometimes I'd use Overtone or arctic fox in the purple or even periwinkle shades to enhance my silvers, and my remaining old dyed hair would take on a really cool steel color, especially if I used overtone in the pastel silver. Plus, deep conditioning. I'm not a fan of short hair so I just stuck it out. I started this well before the pandemic. And I just owned it. I didn't care what anyone thought of my hair. At all. And my confidence must have showed because women AND men were telling me how great my hair color was. All the time. I've never had compliments on my color in 40 years of dying it and I've been every color possible. I just cut my hair from nearly waist length to a just touching my shoulders bob. It's now all my own mostly silver and some pepper hair. I don't miss spending all that money and time on my color. I don't miss the damage and crispy ends. Nature gives the color we should have and it's actually made me look younger and authentic and not washed out and insecure. Yes it is a challenge with dryness and other things but it's easier to manage than hours of my Saturday spent at the salon. If you're ready to embrace the gray just do it and own it. You won't regret it.

Thank you for including those of us who are just starting to get grays. I don't have many, but they're right up front and they're wirey. They stick out and look weird. The highlight idea is doable.

Very true indeed. I started getting gray hair when I was around 37 years old. It sucks!! I hate it!! Lol. Now, I'm 67 years old. I still have gray hair, but, it's white hair, instead of gray hair. Lol. I'm still coloring my hair. I probably will, until I get really old, like 80 years, or until the day I die. I hate having gray hair or white hair because it makes me look old. If I look old, then, I will feel old. That's the last thing I want. I want to feel young, not old. Just my opinion. 😊

My hair is completely white and gray now and I get so many compliments.
Since the scamdemic I stopped going to salons, and because I am a former hair stylist I have knowledge of how to cut hair so I just started cutting my own hair. My hair is the most beautiful now than it’s ever been.
I let my hair grow out, it’s past my bra line, and I’m 64, and I’m ok with it.
What I’ve found is tinting your hair to cover up gray is a waste of time and money, as It’ll look good for a week or two then it goes drab until you do it again. One vicious cycle after the other.
Coloring hair is addictive, always after that youthful beautiful rich color coming out of the salon, but like any addiction you always want that same feeling over and over of feeling beautiful or high. Now I’m free, and love it. I think with age you start not to care what others think of how you look, although you should care about what you think, and I care that I look as nice as I can look.
Younger people have fun with your highlights and all the other neat technology they have out there, as for me, Im grateful for my free beautiful highlights and longer hair.

This is all fantastic information, thank you. I read an article this week that they seem to have discovered what causes gray hair. You actually have stem cells that circulate in your hairs; as you age the stem cells get ‘stuck’ in your hair and no longer circulate to transport the pigment, the hair subsequently goes gray.
According to the article this discovery will pave the way to developing treatments to stop and reverse gray hair, in a few years. Until then I’ll keep coloring 😅

      Dear Sylvia,
Could you do more Grey-Hair video with some semi-hair color , maybe even those -box color, and that they are aswell here in Europe available.
I'm more than 35% grey, special my upper midshift hair. I do have highlights and babyhaighlights around level 9, my natural level is probably 5. Everything was done in salon.
But now with Corona is not easy so I thought to try DIY with your great advices.
Unfortunately those midshift Grey's are coming through the highlights more and more.
I'm in the menopause (51) and my hair is starting be thinner and thinner and less than 5 od 10 years ago .
It's more dry even if I use different hair oils or hydrating and nourishing shampoos, conditioners and mask.
      Thank you

I’m mid 40s…the things they don’t tell natural redheads! I grew mine out without coloring it just to see. The more white I got the more it turned this wild brassy green. Yes, green. It was getting more blonde while iI was naturally losing my red. I used toner shampoos (sometimes pink, sometimes purple) but I decided to go with henna. I’m happy with it now.

I actually just continued to use the same regime that I did, when I coloured my hair: Going for Olaplex treatments at the salon, Olaplex 3 at home, Olaplex 4, purple shampoo, hair mask with moisture in it, Olaplex 5, and then Olpaplex 6 and 7 en combination and letting it air dry.
I cut my long hair into a lob, which made a huge difference in the appearance… Initially I wanted to let it grow, and have long hair again with time, but I am loving this length! So much easier to maintain, and I use a lot less product!😊

Hey Noami! I’m 28 and also have to dye frequently. I’ve been using henna or color depositing conditioner in between dyes to stretch it so I’m not putting harsh chemicals in my hair so often. If you try this, make sure you are using NATURAL henna as it can react negatively with permanent dye. **im not a professional! Just sharing what I do at home**

    • @MelModica

I know this is an older comment but it’s best to color 4-6 weeks to give hair a break and avoid damage. Get a root cover powder or spray, even dry shampoo comes in colors that hide grey or like others suggest use color depositing conditioner or hair mask. I know L’Oréal colorista hides greys. You can also use semi permanent or Demi permanent colors that are way less damaging since you are coloring so often.

Thank you for sharing some options. The challenge I’m having is I have two spots (where are my horns would be😂) that are very solid gray and so I’ve just been dying those but I just realize that they always say short in baby hairs. I don’t know if it’s because I color it or just because of the other changes in the hair, but it won’t get any longer than 6 inches when you get the rest of my hair is very long down to my butt. Is it possible that I’m damaging my hair with the coloring and I should use something else? Or is this just the way it is with grays?

Not just my roots, just sporadic full strands and too many to easily pick them all out anymore...but because I have a lot of thick hair I don’t want to dye my whole head just because of random thin strands but they’re adding up to an insane amount fast lol

I’ve recently found your channel and love your advice and results of different hair coloring. I need your advice please. My hair (medium brown with old highlights and silver with gray) grew out for one year. I had a stroke and doing my hair was not a priority. Two weeks ago, I went to my hair stylist and told her I would like some silver highlights to blend with my gray. I showed her two pictures I had found. Not a good situation…I know have chunky blonde highlights in the front, and she put some dark brown on some strands which I didn’t even know about until I saw the finished hair. The highlights were light blonde with some yellow, brassyness. She bleached it again and put a different toner on it. I’ve washed it about 4 times, and I hate it!! The toner is pretty much gone, and I do use purple shampoo every other time. I have a consultation at a different salon to see if something can be done to get the yellow out. Where I had a lot of very light silver, it’s white but elsewhere it’s blonde. Do you thing it can be fixed so I have the gray back and the highlights not yellow. It makes me sad that it had grown out for a year, and I liked the look and only wanted to brighten it while blending it so it would continue to grow without color. Please give me your advice…I’d really appreciate it. Oh, my natural color hair is medium brown. The way she placed these blonde highlights and added dark brown strands, I look like a skunk😢

But... although I have little greys, my brown color changed from warm to neutral. So I'd like to add some warmth back. I tried henna, but it relaxes my waves. Permanent color damaaged my thin hair. What is the best solution? Recommendations for any other natural color? Or?

What if you have whiter roots and browner ends because of the natural greying process. There is still awkwardness even when embracing complete natural hair. I've not dyed my hair in almost 10 years and my ends are significantly browner simply because in the last year the greying has sped up. So my roots are different. I am constantly fighting myself not to bleach it, but if I did bleach it, it would still be virgin hair :D

I have a very specific case, my hair is this dark brown to light blonde ombre, but I do have those 25% grey hair so instead of just lifting up my ombre once or twice a year I have to color my roots brow to hide the grey hairs, but when it comes to lifting my ombre up I have to light my brown colored hair and it gets hard and damaging. What would you suggest in that case? Thanks

    Hi Sylvia
Do I need to use the grey coverage specific colour for the level or can I just use say an ash brown in the level with a 20 vol developer ? I am an all over level 6 and find that the grey coverage level 6 throws warmth which i hate. Xxx

I use perminent boxed hairdye and it comes back every 2 weeks. L'Oréal casting is the best for my hair but I don't know hat else to use or do. My hair is dyed dark.

Yes, it’s breaking off. Use a semi-permanent or temporary color, if you must color.

I have let my grey grow out to a bob length. I have about 50 % grey and I would like some more exentuated silver parts in the front mimicking the stripes that my grey makes. I am naturally about a level 4-5 I guess.
I have watched your video with the home box dyes and I have bought the “colorista effects bleach”. Will this give me a good result or should I not do this on my own? I just dont have any good experiences with the hairdressers in my area 😬 They do a slobby patchy work. And I cant go to saloons due to covid anyway. If I have a chance of a good outcome I can order a consultation with you to get some guidances and learn how to touch up the roots. 😊🙏🏻

So I am curious about semi permanent dye. You said it won't really do the job, but then you talked about using it to grow out dyed ends.
I have lots of grey that came in mainly in the front. I dont mind that it wont work for long, but does that semi permanent dye really wash out completely? Could be a temporary bit of fun and experimentation.

Hey I have grays more than 25% or just that they are only on the top of my head. But I'm a light readhead. As u can see in my pick. Can u recomend things in general for readhead ? It's so difficult to find something. It's like no one wants to deal with readheads. Also , my mom used to said and I agree, when u get old you can't use darker colors ( she was a brunet ) because it make your face looks more sharp, like less soft ) and I've noticed Nicole Kidman who has my same hair color is going from blonde to light readhead again and again ( just like me ) it's like she can't find a good way to covered her gray hair neither. Me I use to be a 7 now I'm using 9. That I did the last time. I just only dive my grays. But it's far too complicate to do it myself and seems no hairdresser want to do this job neither. That would be so easy for them . I used the same technique that u have to use when u do highlights with aluminum foil. I just picked up only my grays ! And it worked lovely 💓. But I can't reach the back of my hair. And later I have to use a toner to tone everything the same color. ( Maybe because I used blond instead of 9.3 ) any advise ?

I am 24 and I am starting to have some gray hairs, because of vitiligo (my father has vitiligo, so I probably have it too). I am natural blonde, so it's not so visible. my mother has natural light blonde hair and some of her hairs are gray, but they blend in together. they look like platinum blonde to me

over a year ago, I switched to semi-permanent colour. Now I've stopped dying, and it's starting to wash off, but is quite brassy at the moment. I'm considering a deposit-only mask to grey-ify the hair that's been semi-permanently dyed. Do you have one you'd recommend?

You are beautiful but it looks to me like you are using too much Botox or fillers, especially around your lips. Please do not overdo it. Try to embrace your aging face without trauma. You do not need to follow these crazy trends that make the face look frozen and, I am sure you will look less plastic and artificial.
