Hi! How can I contact you for a consultation on color preference? I just lightened my hair with bleach. "Not the first time" but where the roots were grown out its lighter on the yellow side. The lower part is a orange tint. I did two types of toners. Blue and purple for upper and lower. Now I'm basically trying to get my hair to look similar to yours. Not sure what to do at this point.
Thank you so much for this video and all of them! I am a Hairdresser's kid. My Dad was a Hairdresser. However, we lost my Dad when I was 18 years old. I worked in his salon on and off when I was a kid. After his passing, I helped my Mom run the salon and worked there for about 12 years. Up until about 2014, I always had my hair done in a salon. Since then, I have not been able to afford to foil my hair. In about 2014 I began to frost my hair with a cap using a box kit from a drug or grocery store. Mostly, I did get the results that I wanted. One really great option for me if I do not want to tone, is to use a really good purple shampoo to cancel yellow. (Which just happened the last time that I frosted). And, a really good blue shampoo to cancel orange or brassy tones.
exactly! i had such a bad experience the first and ONLY time i've tried to do something different with my hair. the stylist bleached my dark brown hair all in one session without olaplex so I could do a fashion color. Its been over two years and I'm just now seeing all the damage grown out :(
I did the same but mine did die 😭 I’ve lost over 12 inches in length just from breakage 😭😭 and my hair is what everyone considered “super healthy” it was so shiny, soft, thick. Now it’s THIN and breaks with brushing alone 😭😭😭
I explain it by saying it’s like using crayons on construction paper. Take this pastel pink crayon and scribble on this dark brown construction paper and show me what color you get.😂 Now try it on white paper or even a light yellow.
Developer (or activator) is basically hydrogen peroxide. Developers are sold by volume (eg 10, 20, 30) and the higher the volume, the more peroxide it contains. If you just put the dye (the paste color) onto your hair ... it would just fall off. It wouldn't EVER get soaked into your hair or last for even one wash. You need the peroxide to LIFT the outer cuticle layer of the hair. The higher the number - the more it lifts. Lifting that cuticle layer of hair allows the dye to penetrate the hair and become permanent. Let's say you've got dark brown hair and just want some blonde highlights. You'd probably pick a Vol 20 developer because you want to go 2-3 shades lighter than your natural hair for those highlights. If you want to change to a color that is similar to your natural hair, you'd pick a Vol 10, because you don't need to change the level that much so you don't need as much peroxide. Does that make a little more sense? Developer DOES also lighten your natural hair a little ... again, how much it will lighten all depends on how much peroxide it contains. (the higher the volume = the lighter it will make your hair)
Finally I understood what my hair dresser was trying to tell me. I can say I literally could decipher his language now. Thank you so much. Puts an end to endless pinterest searches and unrealistic expectations
She did a really good job breaking it down & explaining tone vs level. I feel much more comfortable now going from a level 7 to level 9 & being able to tone it correctly. 🤗
I know this is an older video, but as a newly licensed cosmetologist, I can’t thank you enough for the lesson! I feel like I just learned more from your video than I did in school about color levels. Thank you!
Thank you for professionally explaining colors, tones, and the bleaching process on the type of hair that a person has. Every time I go to a salon, these ladies are so rude to me when they try to explain the bleaching process.
Alecks Martinez There’s a video by travel and lifestyle or something like that where they do a really good in-depth color theory lesson about 30 minutes long you’ll learn a time. I wish I had the link I would attach it here but look up in UA-cam and watch along with Elle Bangs because there’s different perspectives and eventually it starts to click. I want to videos play while I’m cleaning house. I’m working towards DIY everything. Just got a reallyyyymessed up haircut, So practicing cutting as well LOL pretty soon hairdressing is going to be a dying art because they are too pompous for their own good.
This is amazing! Thanks to UA-cam I no longer cry after visits to the salon! I cut and color my own hair. My hair is long, healthy and has balayage. I am happy with my hair for the first time in my life at 39 and I am saving soooo much time and money!
Me too... and after my friend accidentally lightened her hair I had a bingo moment.. and went from naturally dark hair to Auburn by lightening it .. took 2 years to get to light red..it was helped by going grey in the process..I never have bad hair days or bad cuts since doing my own..
@@jessy1088 I combed a bleach mix through from 1/3 down.. I then used a semi permanent colour.. I did this for a few months with it gradually lightening more and more.. till I had a balayage effect.. but each time it looked good in itself.. so there was no " down time" in the process.. I've since had more grey appear so I no longer do the bleach mix but use a permanent lighter shade that colours the grey.. so i have more like highlights and lowlights....
Yup. Same. I used monat and was one of the people that ended up with a severely messed up scalp. I also got a lil sus when she said 10 vol developer. 10 vol doesnt lift
Graffiti Nefertiti i guess everyone has a diff experience like with other products. I have psoriasis on my scalp and the black monat shampoo is the only one i don’t have a flare up with. I don’t sell it ether lol.
lexi ness do research you will see how there are a ton of law suites out about how it’s damaged hair and the scalp. Lots of hair groups won’t even allow you to talk about them that’s how bad it is.
I naturally have that ashy color mentioned at 2:55 and I can't believe people want to dye their hair to that color?? like I've been dying my hair since I was 15 so I don't have that color. amazing
i've always wondered the same about my hair. it's naturally the lightest blonde possible/nearly white (I'm talking lighter than a level 10) and people would always tell me "oh, girls pay hundreds of dollars to get their hair like yours is naturally!" and I'm just like, but why?? Lol. Then I dyed my hair black for almost 5 years and now I want my light blonde back so I'm paying hundreds of dollars to get my hair to it's natural color ahaha
You said that you didn't felt you did your job turning down a client by not giving the client a new 'hair-do' - i'd say you are doing exactly your job. A lot of women have too high and too unrealistic expectations. You cannot go from a dark brown to a light grey/blond in ONE session! And if your hair is damaged and/or brittled ? Damn - that's a sure way of wacking a hair for sure!! Great video and hopefully ppl take this to consideration while thinking about a new hair color/hairstyle :) *two thumbs up*
I just wanted to say that my colorist lifted my hair from medium brown to a pretty light blonde in one session, one bleach with olaplex and then a toner. My hair hadn't been bleached in about a year, so the very ends were lighter, it was an "accidental ombre" lol. But I was putting temporary purples and lavenders in it. There is a little bit of orange in the back at the roots, but they are underneath, so they do not show much. She is an awesome colorist!
THANK YOU!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So clearly explained, and after completely ruined hair, I got the hint this what I needed to do, but never anyone confirmed: I had beautiful, long, virgin brown hair. I was going through a rough time/quarter life crisis and wanted a change. I never wanted to be blonde, blonde, and did have a lot of damage and breakage. A friend got it in my head that she was afraid I would have to cut it. The only picture I envisioned that would be cute on me with shoulderish length hair was a dark ash blonde, like the photo in the 3:00 minute mark of the vid. I went to Ulta (again, didn't know what I was doing, because I never normally even touch my hair) asking for dark ash blonde- got an bright orange, then toned after going back, to auburny hair- beyond the opposite tone I was looking for. Fast forward two years later, and some disasters and from bad stylists..a lot of my hair broke off to my ears. Years later and now my hair is too short and can't get the look I was trying to achieve in 2016!!!! So now I have to wait for fall of 2018, or winter even, to finally get the look I was going for years prior (cuz I'm still waiting for it to grow). Had I known I would have to lighten my hair to such a light level, and then go back down to get a darker ash color, and would have saved me so many years of agony. I'm literally so depressed about my hair, everyday.
Like she said, levels have nothing to do with color. You can be a level 5 or a level 8 with red hair. Level refers only to the intensity of the pigment, not the shade or tone or color.
My mother is from Donegal, trust me I get it. One of my summer homes is in Cìll Rónáin, on Inishmore. Never seen one of those color levels there in my life.
Riiiight? I remember back in the 2000s blonde hair was always a little bit yellow like Hillary Duff's and it looked great. For some reason everyone now thinks blonde hair should be ashy or it looks "unnatural." Um no it doesn't
Abdullah Ansari The reason is because so many ethnic people have died their hair blonde or. Bleached it and have cheapened the look. Have made it look yucky and yellow. Ashy blonde hair looks more classy to girls now that bleached blonde hair has been so over done. The only girls that still look fabulous bleach blonde are the ones that naturally have lighter hair to do it safely or the girls that are literal beach bum goddesses on Instagram lol
Abdullah Ansari i’m waiting until warm blonde hair is in fashion again hahah, my own hair colour is very warm light blonde but these videos and general fashion make me feel like i should make it ashy lol
EXCELLENT and thanks for sharing. I wish you would talk about the emerging natural gray hair phenomenon being embraced by the 40+ demographic and what NOT to do regarding colouring and what TO DO with respect to styling while growing it in. Thank you.
Yes! I have naturally very dark brown hair and my greys are coming in looking super white. I dyed all my hair black brown to cover it and now I have regrowth. So I am trying to work out how to cover my greys without having to dye all my hair every time. Considering going light because it would be interesting and maybe the greys would be less obvious.
How long do toners last? I had balayage and she made it super ashy because I wanted it ashy but I expect there to be more blonde and my hair is very brown still which is fine because I get it takes time but I wonder if it will look more blonde when the ash fades?
See, I'm just starting to get gray hairs now and they are NOT the "pretty gray" I see some ladies have. Now that I think about it, my grandma didn't have "pretty gray" either. She had a darker color with browns marbled in. I personally think the lighter gray, that is shiny, is very beautiful. I think anyone with "pretty gray" should keep it - some of us just aren't that lucky.
I looked back at your older videos and realized it's been 3 years since I first found and subscribed to your channel! You've grown so much more comfortable behind the camera and have had amazing success just as I knew you would-- you go, Sylvia!
It's just a cool toned black, it's basically half black and half Navy bluish, it looks black in indirect light, but in direct light, it's blue. Hope I explained that well enough
She explained it confusingly. I believe the ash explanation was directed towards blondes.. Because the darkest colour in the colour wheel is blue which is why blue black at level 1 is possible. Red is the natural undertone for majority of people. Has anyone ever had a black red level 1? No.
It will work if you are dying the blue black over platinum blonde hair. I had platinum blonde last winter and wanted to go dark again, so I bought Revlon blue black, and it looked awesome. Could totally see the blue in the black, but...it will not work if your level is 6 or darker I think. I tried doing that color again after having a reddish brown shade, and using color oops as well, but the blue didn't show up at all and just looked black:/
I watched your videos numerous times ... then I bought demi color (wella brand) and for the first time in my life I colored my own hair (I am 61 lol).... I was so fearful of the dreaded orange head ... Being a level 9~10 I was so happy with what I had learned from your videos..!!! It gave me the confidence 12 weeks later to get Wella Charm permanent 10N and 10NA and follow your Balayage video... Again thank you! All is good and I am the blonde color I love... ;)
I am a level 5 or 6 md brown - brown. Thank you for explaining. I learned the colors in cosmetology school years ago. But it is a nice refresher as I am retired hardresser.
Thank you for explaining Level 1-10 and Tone (Golden, Neutral, Ash), I understand it so well now. Would you make a step by step vid on going from 3-4 to an 8-9 and include all the products at the right time. So many videos start out explaining what they're doing and then boom they've skipped past toning or showing the hair before rinsing or the worst - begin any process and then skip past everything else to just show the hair after it's been washed, dried, cut & styled
This video was awesome! I now finally understand (with my very dark brown hair) why the reddish tone always seems to be there that I cannot stand. I now realise why the hairdresser can't simply use the cool tone brown that I much prefer... Thank you for explaining!!
I am the same.. but I used a cool brown box dye.. Comes out cool every time.. Since going grey though I've gone auburn.. quite bizarre after years of wanting cooler tones.. but I love it
I have really dark hair and have went to lots of salons being very dissapointed afterwards with the blonding. So finally i was fed up did my own research left my hair to grow n become healthy again. Finally got my hair really bright blonde was amazing. So i used coconut oil on my hair first n it really helped with any breakage from the bleach. N it only took 3 bleaches. hope it works for you guys as it did for me😚
This was very useful and informative. I had never understood before about the difficulty of having darker ash colour. You explained this very well. Thank you.
You have explained this amazingly!! I let my Daughter listen to listen to have an idea about the challenges when we do her hair and always get that brassy gold hair. I am a hairdresser and it is hard at times to explain it to everyone how this really works. Thank you GREAT VIDEO!!! oxox
It is a science and very rare to find a color specialist. You are very well rounded in this topic. So much appreciate your video's. You look beautiful in this video.🌻
Weird how ashy hair is apparently in right now... I remember when I was younger and hating my ashy light brown hair, and wanting to put red in it... Now I'm starting to let more of my natural hair color grow out and I'm finding I actually like it! Turns out now it's apparently what some people are striving for anyway haha
I wish i saw this before I went to the salon to get my hair dyed. In my defense, it was my first time dying my hair. I’m an asian male with level 2 hair. I wanted a light ash brown color. The lady dyed my hair telling me it should get that light without bleaching. After washing out the dye, my hair color was dark brown. She said, “ohh, you have that asian hair that doesnt react to the dye well. I should have went the other route.” Which was to bleach it first. Now she is charging me more to re-dye my hair. I’m not about to spend a total of $220 to dye my hair. And its not like i have long hair. Its just the top thats about 6 inches long. I just thought she was knowledgeable. My wife looked them up on yelp and they had great reviews. I should have done my own research. Great video. Thank you!!!
Yes, I am Swedish and What is up with that color blonde? We are most naturally light born with very light blonde almost white hair which only gets minimally darker with age but is still much darker than anything on that chart.
Hi Silvia! Can I use Olaplex in a Bleach Wash? And could you PLEASE do a video how to do a Bleach Wash? Thank you very much!!!! Your videos are great!!!!
Old video but my hair lifts super easy I had medium to dark brown and walked out with blonde like near platinum one sitting one bleach session. Minimum breaking of the hair. The person was floored 😂
LOL ... that is crazy!!! Melanin, no matter how much a person has, should lift the same way for everyone. I even googled this!! The ONLY explanation that didn't include some crazy 1 in 300 gazillion disease was "Virgin Hair". Apparently, virgin hair lightens like a dream!
Thanks this finally makes sense. I thought I naturally had too much red in my hair to get really blond , mine always turned yellow , even with ash toners.
This is an old comment, but in case anyone is wondering: YES. I worked in a beauty store for a while and it happened at least once a week. I only worked part-time.
I went lighter gradually by getting more highlights in different shades until I reached the level I wanted. My natural colour is a 4 and I got my base to an 8 with 9 and 10 highlights. I've started to go a bit darker so a level 6 at the roots and throughout just for a change. I've still kept my lighter mid length to ends and because it's warm toned it blends in beautifully. I did my roots at home and I mixed quarter 7.3 and 6.35 and the rest number 6. It's actually came out a lot softer looking than when my hairdresser did it. Love your videos Silviya and you're so beautiful 💖 💖 💖 💖
Oh wow, the penny finally dropped! I couldnt figure out why no hairdresser lightens my colour, and tries to give me red hair instead of the purple I keep asking for. Wow, thank you for explaining this so well. Now I finally understand what they all were trying to tell me!
i tried to go from a level 4-5 to a level 10 over night and I had to chop about 4 inches off my already short hair because of the damage. PLEASE take the advice to go slow with lightening your darker hair! you might not be able to go back to work or school with bleach blonde white hair, BUT you won't have the chop off your length over night like i did.
I agree mostly, but there are exceptions... My hair is fine(might help lighten more?)and a level 5 or maybe 5.5 ash... One session of bleach at salon got me very very close to level 10. I didn't want white blonde so she made sure to rinse on time. Coarse/thick hair is probably more challenging ...
Hi Silvia, Would you be able to recommend a less expensive alternative to the Monat Deep Conditioner product you mentioned in your video? I hear John Freeda is really good too. What do you think?
Thank you for saying you like the ash color. That is my exact natural color now. It used to be a slightly ashy light brown but has darkened and dulled with age. I am finally embracing it (even with the glitter) and starting to grow it out instead of continuing to dye it.
I love ❤️ this video! First one that actually makes sense to a non-experienced person! Thx so much I'm getting highlights (practically my whole hair tho) tomorrow I'm so excited 😆!
Can you do a video on gel lightening or lightening spray... for example, can we use those to achieve a tone then come in and achieve a hair color we would want without bleaching being used?
Having tried Monet shampoo and deep conditioner I can absolutely say it works. It has been a year since I used it and just cannot afford the over one hundred dollars I have to spend on just those two products. I made them last for over 6 months so they were worth every penny! I'm saving pennies now. Best products I have ever used!
Thank God, someone has explained how hair reacts. You want to achieve lvl 10: -if you have healthy hair lvl 2 hair, it can be lifted +4lvls. Like lvl 2 + 4lvls of bleach = lvl 6 hair. Even if you have a healthy hair, you cant bleach the already bleach lvl 6 hair on the same day coz it will dry and fry your hair. So dont. It will take 2 session of different days to achieve lvl 10. -if you have a brittle, dry lvl 6 hair, and you really wanted to lighten your hair, it can only lighten up by 1 or 2lvls. You'll wait for the nxt session where your hair can be bleach again. For me that will be a long process. So before you go bleaching your hair, make it healthy. Also, i still dont know the meaning of toning, neutralizing it. Does it mean that it will turn into brown. Just light brown hair?
I am also a number 6 naturally. Seeing you in the video, it looks perfect your color. I am thinking to go for it. First time I will become blond so... big change! Thanks for the videos.
The best conditioning treatment I ever used at home was Castor Oil on dry hair, shower cap to protect my pillow and to hold body heat to my hair, and leaving it in 48 hours. A good shampoo washed it all out in one shower. My hair felt like silk.
Yes, it’s pretty much my virgin hair too, and I’ve never appreciated it. I thought it was dull. It changes your perspective when you hear someone say this.
What you say for someone that is gray. I started going gray in 20's and now in my 40's the gray is actually silver, I can't seem to get my colors right. I always end up with "hot roots." I watched the video where you did your moms hair but my gray/silver is way more evident than your moms. Thanks for your content, I have cutting my bangs to a science.
I just color the roots but because my hair is so silver its always more vibrant than the rest of my hair. I think the only option is to have a darker root based but I strayed from that because the grow out is so obvious even the most microscopic root is like "hey look at me" lol.
Hi BittersweetDee have you tried just a blue shampoo and conditioner to give it a nice Ashy colour I have blonde coloured hair but I always use a blue shampoo and conditioner to give it a nice white ashy look because I don't like yellows tones the best one I have used is from boots called BLEAch Blondes by Lee Stafford my son is a hairdresser so he gets a good shampoo and conditioner by Osmo called silvering and that's lovely but you can only get it from wholesalers! But the one from boots is equally as good I love it I hope this bit of info helps and keep up with your bangs I love mine do you x
This video was super helpful and informative. It wasn’t boring at all and it was very easy to digest, even for someone like me who hasn’t gone to cosmetology school (yet lol). It answered a lot of my questions. I too want to be a blonde specialist after I complete school so I’m excited I found your channel!! 😁
Good info, thanks! How many levels would you recommend for a contrast between highlights and lowlights to have a nice contrast but still not too harsh of a look?
Hi Silvia! I'm currently going through the "blonding" process to help hide my grays. My hair was naturally brunette when I was younger but now is probably nearly all gray and I was getting a "skunk stripe" starting to show 2 weeks after I colored (not acceptable, lol). My hair dresser has been lightening my base and then doing highlights (mainly in the top) which is starting to result in some damage in the areas she has been bleaching. If you could pick one product from the Monat line to help with this, which would it be? The products are a little on the pricey side so I can't do the whole system right away. I'm currently using Joico K-pak conditioner and their purple shampoo. I'm on my 3rd lightening session and am at that kind of golden highlight stage with a darker base on bottom. Not quite sure how far into blond I intend to go...just trying to take it one appointment at a time and see how well the gray blends with the new color. Is this the best method for reaching gray coverage in your opinion? Also, I don't think she is using any kind of product like Olaplex. Should she be at this point? I love your channel by the way even though there is no way I would attempt this at home. You have provided so much education so I kind of had an idea of what to expect when I started on this journey. I do worry sometimes that even though my hair dresser is very competent, she doesn't specialize in blonding. Sorry this post is so long!
I've been watching your videos and all the professional information and tips. This isn't about hair but I'm curious what foundation you use. Your skin is beautiful and your makeup looks flawless!!
Just wanted to say -YOU ARE THE BEST- I never know my skin tone or hair tones-guessing warm since I am a brunette with red undertones-LOL Skin tone still has me baffled!!! xo
I don’t understand how I can easily get my hair to white blonde at home in 1 bleaching/toning without doing massive damage, but I haven’t found a single salon that can even come close to getting my hair to a level 9/10? I’ve worked in a salon & had my hair done by them to prove this actually. The lightest they ever got my hair was a level 8, which is light. I waited for about 5 weeks cuz my hair grows fast. I had them trim the ends to keep it healthy looking. I did my normal at home routine. Then I bleached it & toned it. I came in the next day & they couldn’t believe how I was able to achieve that at home by myself overnight. My hair tends to pull warm, so I tone with an ash toner to balance that out & I’ve played around with different formulas for fun & I’ve achieved amazing results! What’s frustrating is that I would love to be able to get some dimension in my hair after I bleach it, which is why I go to the salon always hoping they can achieve it. It ends up costing me over $200 & is never what I want.

I LOVE YOUR Haircolor,... What do I ask my Stylist for to achieve this???
Ps been doing this in steps. So my hair doesn't burn up
My natural is ashy🤮 but I'm grey ,dyed browny red & I'm lost what to do?
The real question is how do we find stylists that know what they are doing like you.
exactly! i had such a bad experience the first and ONLY time i've tried to do something different with my hair. the stylist bleached my dark brown hair all in one session without olaplex so I could do a fashion color. Its been over two years and I'm just now seeing all the damage grown out :(
Professional hair stylists that are well known, there should be atleast 1 where ever ur from. Problem is it maybe expensive
Karli Marie amen!!
Do it yourself, that's probably why you re here⬆
let the director do it. bit extra money though.
Never heard such a concise and clear explanation of the 'whys' and 'how' of toning before. Thank you.

Well she is a licensed pro so I sure hope so haha
I went from a level 2 to a level 9 in one session. How my hair is still on my head and not dead is a miracle
LMAO same omg
I did the same but mine did die 😭 I’ve lost over 12 inches in length just from breakage 😭😭 and my hair is what everyone considered “super healthy” it was so shiny, soft, thick. Now it’s THIN and breaks with brushing alone 😭😭😭
no one:
15 year-old brunette me: wHy cAnt U juSt pUt thE pAstEl cOloR oN ?!
I explain it by saying it’s like using crayons on construction paper. Take this pastel pink crayon and scribble on this dark brown construction paper and show me what color you get.😂 Now try it on white paper or even a light yellow.
I am 13 not 15
Sanbika that kinda don’t make sense.
Yes that’s the best way to describe it!
Alecks Martinez I seriously started doing my own hair for this exact reason.
Me too melissa. And they charge a fucking arm and leg for a partial highlight.
I really enjoy knowing the language of a hairdresser. It totally helps with educating myself in getting better at home results.
This is amazing! Thanks to UA-cam I no longer cry after visits to the salon! I cut and color my own hair. My hair is long, healthy and has balayage. I am happy with my hair for the first time in my life at 39 and I am saving soooo much time and money!
How did you do bayalage on your self? I want to do it but have been afraid to mess it up lol
Me too... and after my friend accidentally lightened her hair I had a bingo moment.. and went from naturally dark hair to Auburn by lightening it .. took 2 years to get to light red..it was helped by going grey in the process..I never have bad hair days or bad cuts since doing my own..
I would love to know how you got to balayage. I never knew that you should use a toner. If you can believe that lol.
FINALLY... Some with actual knowledge about Color Theory & Tones. God bless you for simplifying this ♥
I was listening until she mentioned monat
omg same... ive been watching her vides for years and i was so shocked to see this.
Monat is fire
Yup.
I naturally have that ashy color mentioned at 2:55 and I can't believe people want to dye their hair to that color?? like I've been dying my hair since I was 15 so I don't have that color. amazing
Antonela people seem to want another kind of hair - dark, light, curly or straight long short bangs etc.
Antonela im dying to have ash brown hair, i have brassy brown
i've always wondered the same about my hair. it's naturally the lightest blonde possible/nearly white (I'm talking lighter than a level 10) and people would always tell me "oh, girls pay hundreds of dollars to get their hair like yours is naturally!" and I'm just like, but why?? Lol. Then I dyed my hair black for almost 5 years and now I want my light blonde back so I'm paying hundreds of dollars to get my hair to it's natural color ahaha
lol Same here! Grass is always greener on the other side I suppose.
Antonela same!!!
It took me 1yr to go from black Indian hair to platinum ice white blonde. It was worth the wait.
Great video and hopefully ppl take this to consideration while thinking about a new hair color/hairstyle :)
*two thumbs up*
I just wanted to say that my colorist lifted my hair from medium brown to a pretty light blonde in one session, one bleach with olaplex and then a toner.
“Everyone on earth has one of these levels”
Cries in Irish
If you have red hair never dye it! It’s so beautiful already.
This is the one youtube hair video that everyone who’s even thought about bleaching their hair should see!! 💕
To think that ashy hair colors are so in at the moment and I put red over my natural dark ash blonde hair, oh well! I'll never get rid of the red...
Riiiight? I remember back in the 2000s blonde hair was always a little bit yellow like Hillary Duff's and it looked great. For some reason everyone now thinks blonde hair should be ashy or it looks "unnatural." Um no it doesn't
Abdullah Ansari
The reason is because so many ethnic people have died their hair blonde or.
My hairdresser made my hair ashy and I wanna get rid of it! Any ideas??
@@bperez8656 oh how this sounds racist
I used to think of hair coloring as rocket science. But you made it like 100% easier to understand
EXCELLENT and thanks for sharing. I wish you would talk about the emerging natural gray hair phenomenon being embraced by the 40+ demographic and what NOT to do regarding colouring and what TO DO with respect to styling while growing it in. Thank you.
twominutetips me too....been going grey since 15 and would love to grow it out x
Same I'm starting to grow out my grey because my dark brown hair keeps going orange after a few weeks of being dyed Ash tones
I've watched a ton of hair coloring videos and not one of them has ever mentioned ph binder. THANK YOU!
I looked back at your older videos and realized it's been 3 years since I first found and subscribed to your channel! You've grown so much more comfortable behind the camera and have had amazing success just as I knew you would-- you go, Sylvia!
Thank you so much for your videos. I work in a downgraded job and can't afford professional services and this really helps me take care of my hair.
How do "blue-black" hair colors work so that the blue shows on such dark hair?
Stefanie Tepperwien, Blue black is the darkest colour you can put in the cortex, and very hard to lighten
No.
Blue black (level 1) is cool (ashy) 😉
It will work if you are dying the blue black over platinum blonde hair. I had platinum blonde last winter and wanted to go dark again, so I bought Revlon blue black, and it looked awesome. Could totally see the blue in the black, but...it will not work if your level is 6 or darker I think. I tried doing that color again after having a reddish brown shade, and using color oops as well, but the blue didn't show up at all and just looked black:/
That was brilliant - and finally explains why my hairdresser wasn't able to. Best explanation I've heard yet.
Yesss
You're so amazing, I'm 34yr old i just got graduate from hairdressing course, find your channel so amazing i learnt alot from you. Thanks again
OMG you talked about the desired Ashy Brown hair - thank you sooo much!
Since going grey though I've gone auburn.. quite bizarre after years of wanting cooler tones.. but I love it
What eye shadow and lipstick shade are you wearing? Love it!
Sarah Nazim Fr
Yes my question too!
N it only took 3 bleaches. hope it works for you guys as it did for me😚
Love the breakdowns. I am so so glad you posted this! Very helpful and will watch it again.
Sandra Kho ii
This was very useful and informative. I had never understood before about the difficulty of having darker ash colour. You explained this very well. Thank you.
You have explained this amazingly!! I let my Daughter listen to listen to have an idea about the challenges when we do her hair and always get that brassy gold hair. I am a hairdresser and it is hard at times to explain it to everyone how this really works. Thank you GREAT VIDEO!!! oxox
Ty
Such a useful video! I laughed a little because I was recently in Sweden and I think that chart needs 2 or 3 more levels on the lighter side for them!
Yes, I am Swedish and What is up with that color blonde? We are most naturally light born with very light blonde almost white hair which only gets minimally darker with age but is still much darker than anything on that chart.
Shes showing undertones, not levels here.
That's the best video by far I've found on UA-cam that explains the colours tones ect, thank you!
Hi Silvia!
Can I use Olaplex in a Bleach Wash?
And could you PLEASE do a video how to do a Bleach Wash?
Thank you very much!!!!
Your videos are great!!!!
This video was super helpful in helping me effectively communicate with my hairdresser. Thank you!!
I swear if I had a teacher like you I would have became a stylist. So interesting 🤔
If it wasn't for you I would not be able to do my hair at home. I follow what you say and my hair turns out beautiful every time. Thank you so much
are there really stupid people thinking u can put liight blue on black XD
I guess so lol
Oh yes!
This is an old comment, but in case anyone is wondering: YES. I worked in a beauty store for a while and it happened at least once a week. I only worked part-time.
Not everyone would know :/
XD
This is the best video on going blonde I have seen on youtube. By far.
thank you so much for explaining the basics of hair colour! I know I'll feel more confident and empowered the next time I get my hair coloured.
Love how knowledgeable you are. The best video on the subject on UA-cam
I'm not a stylist but i understood it all! Thank you
So informative
I'm so glad I found your channel! I love how you give professional advice but break it down in a way that layman's can understand!
What colour blonde is you're hair🙋🏼 I would love that colour, really suits you
^yesss what color blonde is your hair ? I love it😍
My God Elle, you are so naturally beautiful! Dont ever change yourself
Did your highlights come out orange , or did you tone them ? If so what toner. I have level 2 black boxed hair. Ty
So you bleached your hair until you got the color you wanted.
Which toner would you use to get the hair color at 2:50?
this lip colour is so nice on u
You are the best . no matter how many stylists i watch .. You are the best
I’m 5N and want to go to a lighter chocolate brown, what’s the level I would have to go down to for the best results and the minimum damage??
Jacquelin Montes I don't even know where you can get Monet, I was wondering the same thing.
Josie Koerner Monat can be purchased through sellers. It's like Avon but with hair care.
Thanks OrangeKnickers
Use coconut oil 98% of hair care stuff is made from diluted coconut oil.
I am not sure if anyone answered your question but Ulta carries a brand called Caviar and it is amazing. I love it.
The ashy color example- at 2:55, who is that girl? Where can I find that picture? She looks like someone I know... and I wanted to compare. Thanks!
My hair is dark brown and i always dye it to black
Finally, I understand hair color. Thank you so much!!!
Thank God, someone has explained how hair reacts.
You want to achieve lvl 10:
-if you have healthy hair lvl 2 hair, it can be lifted +4lvls.
What shade blonde do you currently have?! It's so beautiful. GOALS!
This is exactly what I need when I need it! Thanks girl ly 💛🌻
And #earlysquad , who is with me peoplee
you're so welcome :) xxx
I am also a number 6 naturally. Seeing you in the video, it looks perfect your color. I am thinking to go for it. First time I will become blond so... big change! Thanks for the videos.
A question about fashion colors: My hair is naturally a level 7 with a golden tone. Do I have to lighten my hair to dye it dark blue?
Nico Marquardt you have to lighten and tone it. otherwise blue will turn green on ur hair
Yes I put blue black on platinum blonde hair. The blue will definitely show, but not on anything that has golden tones
This is a great video. Convinced me to do henna as I do not see how a hair can be healthy after tons of bleaching and chemical hair dyes
Can you pleaaaaase answer my question? I have dark brown hair and I badly want light blonde highlights that are ashy....is that possible and how???
Do balauage or highlights and fhen tone
The best conditioning treatment I ever used at home was Castor Oil on dry hair, shower cap to protect my pillow and to hold body heat to my hair, and leaving it in 48 hours. A good shampoo washed it all out in one shower. My hair felt like silk.
YOU ARE AMAZING!
YOU ARE AMAZING! :D xx
You are amazing to watch! So informative and precise thank you so much!
2:52 ... this “super gorgeous ashy color” is the natural hair color I’ve been trying to get rid of my entire life. 😑😑😂😂
Yes, it’s pretty much my virgin hair too, and I’ve never appreciated it. I thought it was dull. It changes your perspective when you hear someone say this.
@@LilyEvansP Totally. I'm still not going to go back to it, but I did think about it for a whole half a second lol.
Meghan Ramos LOL ain’t that the way it goes. You can take my gold any day!
Same until someone said it was APPRENTLY that colour and it was pretty and now I am just like WHOOPI
Lucky you 🙏🥰😘
Oh my gosh, now I totally understand why my hair colorist said she could only neutralize some of the red by going darker!! Thank you!! 😇
Could you do a video about stripping hair and what to do after it? Thanks
I’ve been wondering how to tone down level 6 hair that was botched to be reddish… glad i found this before i went out to try things…
BitterISweetIDee do you keep coloring the ends when you color
Your roots?
Me too BittersweetDee she made me make a conscience decision to have bangs put in my hair and I love them 💇🏼👍🏼
I just color the roots but because my hair is so silver its always more vibrant than the rest of my hair.
This is the best video I have seen this topic. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your information. I've learned so much!!!!! Please don't change your channel.
Good info, thanks! How many levels would you recommend for a contrast between highlights and lowlights to have a nice contrast but still not too harsh of a look?
40bdg I usually go at least 4 levels difference to make it pop!
I really love your videos and all the good info you provide, but I also just wanna say that you are so pretty! :)
You have advanced in the answer cue.
Great info for a junior hairdresser such as myself. Thank you 😊
You're so bloody beautiful omg I want to copy your hair and make up to a T.
I've been watching your videos and all the professional information and tips. This isn't about hair but I'm curious what foundation you use. Your skin is beautiful and your makeup looks flawless!!
I agree, she looks amazing.
Just wanted to say -YOU ARE THE BEST- I never know my skin tone or hair tones-guessing warm since I am a brunette with red undertones-LOL Skin tone still has me baffled!!! xo
Why did you cross out YOU ARE THE BEST? Lol,why not just delete your comment and put a new one up? Strange....
