I know a lot of you struggle with keeping the warm tones away when coloring your hair or even when leaving the salon. I explain why this happens. I colour my own hair with salon colour and I use 10 vol with my colour, it covers my greys excellent and more gentle, does exactly the same as 20 volume and my hair is jet black.

Exactly. They really have no idea, just blah blah blah.
Maybe because its black. The lighter we go the more the color looks different where the hair is gray. And it washes off faster because it fades faster. Or it just looks lighter than rest

Yes, please. Specifically, how to gray blend without a noticeable demarcation line.
For instance, if you are going to the same level at the base/roots and want some highlights ,or even lowlights, in the base/roots also what's the best method to achieve this. Do you do all the processes at the same time or can you do the base color first and then go back and add highlights? Thanks so much.

I'm still confused. So you go in with an NN to cover Gray roots. In how many weeks do you put on the AG color? And then doesn't that get kind of stripey looking? NN-AG-NN-AG-NN-AG-NN-AG, etc.
Or do you put the AG on right after you put on the NN?

I don’t even want ash blonde. I just want medium brown hair and it ALWAYS comes out red/orange. I show pictures at the consult, we talk and talk. And it always comes out the same, red.
What is the name of the hair color you used, in the shade 7NN.
I don't understand why you wouldn't add a percentage of NN or NA to your formula (say 25% NN to 77% AG), or incorporate an ABN

But the products on your brush is liquid not cream like you would get when you mix the products that you showed.
I wish you would show an older person with greys .. most of these models are probably not even 25

Addendum: There are lots of videos on how to color grey hair, but I never see one about coloring white hair. A lot of us would love that.
You are amazing! The video I've been looking for for almost 10 years! I'm a brunette who covers gray, and I've been struggling forEVER with that dreaded copper fading, even after salon visits. All I want is dark brown and some nice ash highlights, but now I know why it's just not that simple.

Me too. 6NN 20 volume gives me hot roots. But I want my roots 6NN to match the length of my hair. Why is this hot roots happening on gray roots. It looks bad and cheap looking. Help!

Is it 6NN with 20 volume, then in between the weeks you also use 7AG with 10 volume? I don't understand? My gray roots always turn brighter, like hot roots with 6NN 20 volume and it doesn't look good compared to my darker brunette length which is the overall color I want at my roots also? Why does this hot roots always happen with 6NN 20 volume? I don't want hot roots. I want a nice color on my roots everytime I apply color to my roots. Help!
I use Wella and I added about 1/3 Ash in the same number to my mix and finally don't have warm at the root. I use a 4N and added 1/3 4A.
This is a good alternate formula when using wella!
I use Wella as well. I use 4N11 if I remember it correctly. The scalp has red color after I dye the roots…. Ugh…. So I’m going to add Ash next time to get rid of the ugly red at the scalp. Thx much!

I’m so glad I found your videos. I’m 70 & I got so sick of coloring my hair so I decided to let my hair grow natural. The sides were white but the rest & most of my roots were medium brown with little white mixed in. I hated it! So I decided to color my hair a pale platinum through a cap. I was happy with it except for the roots which get more reddish brown every time I wash my hair. I can’t wait to touch up my roots now. You’re the best!

Please do a video on covering gray roots on heavily highlighted blonde (level 8, 9, 10). Can you just use a toner on the whole head? I'm trying to avoid using a 20 vol color on the roots bc it stains the pretty bright 10 highlights;/
I have a problem with it being gold at the roots and it looks like it wasn't fully processed. Should I leave the color on my roots for 45min vs 30?

I've JUST had my last cut with the blending/grey transitioning color in it (decided to do it during the pandemic). It's ALL out now and I LOVE it.
I want to grow out my natural hair color, which is mostly white. It is so hard, if I use demi permanent hair color it doesn't last long enough. If I use permanent hair color it stains my hair and won't release the orange tones when I use a color corrector. HELP! I'm currently sitting here with white roots and pale orange ends trying to decide if I keep going with bleach or just go back to dying my hair, which I really do not want to do. 😢😢
I have a question: at the end you said you used 10 Volume with the AG colors, but I thought you said you used 20 Volumeto cover grays with the NNs. Did I miss something ?
I actually stopped dying my hair since the pandemic, and my grays are in full display. Is there any way to strip the dye color that is at the tips at home?
Using this method don’t you get patches of different color? I’m still a bit confused how you can use 2 different shades each time you do your root touch up. Do you only apply the color at the new roots? Are you using permanent hair color or Demi permanent?
I am not a hairdresser. I started doing my own hair 16 years ago. I have a lot of grays. I only touch up my roots. I highlight as needed, every 2nd or 3rd time. I use nn and add a little of ash to my formula, with 20 vol developer. it seems to be working well for me this way. Love your videos.
Hi, i would like to ask, how do you keep up with the grey/white hair starting to show up nearly two weeks later? İ wonder how healthy it would be for the scalp to color every two/3 weeks for years...with as much as 'natural' hairdye of course...
@@tugce631 at the longest I touch up my roots every 4 weeks. Only if a special event comes up would I do 2. Rarely. In between lately I have found a crayon type touch up pen from Amazon that camouflages the gray in where I need it after my hair is styled. Since I only use 20 volume my hair is in good condition.
@@tugce631 also I NEVER run color over what has already been colored. When needed I with put in a few baby lights.

20 is stronger than 10.. no sh*t Sherlock. And use a model who has gone grey stop demonstrating on non grey non porous hair stay in your lane.

I'm confused when you mention one time you use 6nn and the next time you use ag... Doesn't that cause color banding? I'm not understanding something.

@@shanda5109 thanks! I try haha. I've been waiting 4mos for an answer, so don't get your hopes up too high lol. I do my own weird thing anymore, and it works for my brass. I hate toner--makes my hair feel great but even doing all the right things, it lasts 2 weeks and then starts fading a lot. So I try to get my tone correct with my permanent (chromatics) dye. I mix 5Ab equally with 4Ag and add a Tablespoon of 7N. I'm naturally in the 5 ash range with 50% white hairs, and I aim to match the grey to my natural color.
Can you mix a 7Ag +6nn ?
Yes absolutely. You can also mix 7NA +7AA. For even more ash neutral result

How many minutes does the 7ag sit on the hair before you wash it out?
I've been doing my own hair color for the last 20 years. When I get a cut the stylist always asks me how I did it and as you mentioned the trick is never use the same color twice in a row. I use a medium brown N base and 20 volume developer, and alternate with chestnut, violets and dark blonde tones. Natural hair is not all one colors so your color choices should mimic this as well. I have this beautiful dark brown, maroon with blonde highlights naturally from alternating colors.
When I was getting it done professionally, I'm not kidding. The hairdresser always messed it up either by using semi-permanent color or by getting brassy tones. Not something I want to pay for!
Needless to say, coloring is not that hard, I learned to do with myself much better results and less cost. And since I get roots every 10 days I have to color often.

Hi. Do you mix you base with another to add tone? I am desperate to know. Stylists in my area just want to give me an overall colour. I could do that at home with box dye 😮

@@DanceswithfishesI always purchase professional color and the developer that goes with it. I prefer igora Royal. You can add a second color and stripe it in kind of like making your own thin highlights/ lowlights. That gives you a lot more dimension. If I was using dark brown like a level 3, I would use a mahogany to add some depth with low lights. It looks really pretty too when the Sun shines on it.
Same for blonde tones. You could use medium blonde and add a little bit of chocolate lowlights. That gives more dimension
@@Nah481 Thanks. I've heard good things about Igora Royal. I was using Koleston Perfect, but I find it goes really dark on me, even if using a level 5/0 (mixed with 6/07) in my greys.
I just bought the 7n to cover my grays. My hair is similar to yours. so what I get from this video is cover with N and go back with an AG to calm the red warm tones right ???

20 developer would not cover my grays. I had to use 30 developer. I use medium ash brown. My hair is naturally darkest brown/black.

10 volume is fabulous if you don’t wash your hair every day it’s works well with NO DAMAGE
Can you use 1/2 6NN and 1/2 6AG together?
I mix mine and get great results. It turns out like golden hi lights and I get the grey coverage.
Do you tone on a seperate dat AFTER doing your roots to catch any potential bleed to your blonde ? I just commented on a recent video you posted where you "tone up" your blonde with the T18 and T27. Then came here to what you were doing for Grey's.
I recently have tried doing some things at home bc my grey is just getting absurd. Looks great with all blonde but im trying to save $ this year by embracing my natural and the blonde I have left as my hair grows out. When I did my roots I tried to keep it cold water wash but I'm sure it made the highlights I have dingy ... which is why I was watching your other video mentioned.

Hello dear! I’ve struggled with this for so long and want to give the AG tones a try - where can I purchase these without a license?
My question is: how do you manage to tone down the brasiness with all those highlights? I always wanted a color that's around 7 at the base and highlights, but I always have the problem of initially having a pretty cool toned base and after 3 weeks it gets so brassy, and if I had the highlights how can I tone down the brassy brown without overtoning the highlights? Story of my life, that's why I've been an allover blonde for so long, I'm naturally a level 6

Salt pepper( black white), over 50+ , is that 20+ 4NN? Or is it possible to go lighter no brass whit 5NN?
100 likes I get highlights every ~8 months, pretty much at the point my roots are grown out a few inches. I often felt like I was getting too much lift, but realize the colorist is attempting to help with coverage. So, mentioning I am looking for something blended cool and neutral is definitely the way I want to go.

I still don’t understand why if I am a natural 6.5 ash blonde with some grey that I can’t just use a 6A or 7A. Whenever I try putting N or NB into the formula, that turns out more red. Why not just choose ash to cover grey?
Try using a level five.

Sadly I find many stylist don't listen. It's almost like your questioning their abilities. Every stylist I have been to has always gotten my roots too warm. I tried Madison Reed color at home and it came out perfect. Sephora now sells.
What color did you use in the Madison reed and what was your starting color ?

How does the AG work if your regrowth is pure white , this means there won’t be any NN left for it to attach to. ?

What if you use a demi permanent, like Color Touch, and there are no Neutrals?
to take the brassy color away, wash your hair with BLUE SHAMPOO and rinse it with BLUE CONDITIONER once a week.
I am confused, I have some grey in the front, brunette in the back and now after I showed her that I was aiming at the blonde that I had done with my previous hair stylist... I walked away with orange tones. Is this going to mellow out? Or what? Dont see any blonde. I almost wish that I had the whole thing done brunette. Way better than orangey.

My friend is naturally a medium fairly neutral brown, but is grey now so always colours her hair. She's gone progressively lighter over the years, as she says lighter hair is easier to blend / hide the roots when they grow back every 2-3 weeks.
The grey is still very obvious when it comes back though! Should she just go a bit darker? Her roots are too warm too. Like a honey beige. And the all over blonde washes her skin tone out. She's a natural level 4-5 and her colour now is a level 8.

Possibly THE BEST video I've ever seen on the science of tinting grey hair. I was naturally a cool ash 4 before going grey, and have struggled to stop my roots going too warm. I use Igora Royale tint, so now off to buy the right tones to get rid of my warm roots.
For full grey coverage is it good idea to add Ash to my NN? I.e. 6NN 1oz and 1/2oz 6ABN (ash brown) Or will the ash dilute the grey coverage of the NN?

If you buy drugstore hair colour be sure it has "ash" included in the INGREDIENTS. You will love it
My problem is the dark roots combined with fast growing hair I have visible grey in 5 days - and my hair dresser never wants to highlight to get more of a blended look because it damages my ends.
Wella double base /02 series is the best to avoid orangey roots
