  • Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Lillehammer, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - First, a portion of Tonya Harding's practice. This would be the last time she's seen landing the triple Axel. Morning practice session of the final group of skaters (including Nancy Kerrigan of the United States, and Chen Lu of China) where Oksana Baiul of Ukraine and Tanja Szewczenko of Germany collided with each other as they were both setting up to perform a triple Lutz jump coming from opposite ends of the ice at full speed. Both would be shaken up and badly bruised, but they would later be able to compete later that night. An interview with Tanja Szewczenko is included.

Wow.....both this happened at the 94 Olympics AND the Kerrigan/Harding thing..??? I never knew Oksana had been that badly injured. Never realized she was skating with 3 stitches in her leg. I’m just so happy for that sweet 16 yr old girl back then that she won the Gold😌. My heart always went out to her for the loss of her mother & not having any parents....😢

Wow, the thunderously crisp sound of Tonya's skate when she lands the triple axel, the speed coming out of it, the corrected air position....beyond incredible. If she had tweaked her 3A like this earlier in her career she would've had an even better 3A than Midori and been untouchable at these Olympics.

The 3A in this clip was very good. She might have been able to match Midori's 3A if she had worked at it, but no way would she had been able to surpass it. Midori's 3A at the1990 World was sublime.

the usual story line is NK knee was clubbed. I recall looking at doctor notes allowed by olympic something or other commenting on the injury on THE BACK OF RIGHT KNEE. behind the leg. NOT THE KNEE. NOT. KNEE. A skinny baton that a man had to hunch over to reach, and it was one smack on the BACK of the knee. pix show the skater - hysterical - holding the BACK of her stinging right leg behind the knee. Oksana GETS THREE STITCHES in LANDING LEG - shin - and stories of her possibly being too injured to compete - was this in the plan, too? BAM wins gold! No five weeks of intense physical therapy, etc etc etc. If someone really wanted to side line another skater.... would it be done in a busy arena? by a person who has NO idea of geographics? really? a thin baton? on the back of the leg? (no world's comps necessary to possibly do poorly at) Sure it stung - but skaters do worse sometimes in practice! BLADES and really hard ice surface ----- this thing seems so scripted. something was in the works way before the skating. endorsements, undisclosed amounts for ads ... the banning of another skater from ice? her ex HAD TO DISCUSS it within ear reach in order to implicate, those two bozos couldn't rub two brain cells together but come up with this plan? and who makes out like a bandit s then get married
? SKETCHY (.... found online: The attack injured Kerrigan, but she quickly recovered. ... Kerrigan was bludgeoned on the right lower thigh with a police baton by an assailant,) BLUDGEONED!!! and all the other paid for articles claim on the knee. no. back of knee - the area was the hamstring. MRI found NOTHING. " The hamstring muscles are the muscles in the back of the thigh that allow the knee to bend (knee ). The hamstring muscles turn into tendons as they come down and attach at the back of the knee. They can get tight and inflamed.) Perhaps this was the cause of knee swelling - a smacked hamstring/tendon.

It's quite funny when people say Tonya only did 2 triple axels in her whole life. She landed multiple of those in her warm-ups and they were so clean and amazing. The reason why she didn't do a triple axel again in a competition (from 1994) is because of the pressure of the media she had to experience since Nancy's accident. Banning her from ice skating was an absurd punishment. She had such a raw and unique talent, and I'm sure she would have made history (even though she is already considered as a legend).

I am not even sure she ever was under an obligation to turn Jeff Gilooly in; she was married to him at the time, however but and toxic their relationship might have been. Isn't there some sort of privilege in American law that you cannot be forced to testify against a close relative or spouse, and not be punished for refusing to do so? (Here in Germany there is.) And that privilege should equally apply to not having to report a spoused for a crime? Here in Germany this is an outflow of the protection of the family, which is part of our constitution even. For all I know, Toya might well have been acting within her constitutional rights. But they couldn't stand her from the start and that's why they cracked down on her and banned her for life. well Tanja might have had the wind knocked out of her, so she probably appeared to be more seriously injured upon first glance. Also, Tanja was Katarina's teammate - and there was a language barrier between her and Oksana because Oksana did not speak English well at that point.

Katarina was/is from Germany while Oksana was/is from Ukraine. So it's possible that Katarina might have known Russian but much more likely she spoke German. Also it wasn't really a rude shove from Katarina. She got Oksana onto her feet, and the girl was able to stand and glide herself to the barrier while Katya then went to the other skater. It's important to get two fallen skaters up and off the ice as quickly as possible, especially during a run-through of a third athlete's program. I know it probably seems cruel but this sport has a lot of injury and falls/crashes are more common than most would realize.

It would have been a very different competition. I wonder where Sato might have been if it weren't for the Lutz in the short. Lu's artistry in the long was exemplary but would Sato's speed and precise technicality overtaken it? Lu was an awful spinner and had marginal footwork. Sato excelled in both. Lu could truly "tell a story" on ice while Sato wasn't very imaginative.

The practice sessions of both American women leave a what if in my mind. What if Tonya had landed the triple Axel in her long program. I think her technical marks would have been 5.7 to 5.9 and her artistic marks would have gotten bumped up by about 0.1. I think she would have finished 4th or 5th in the long program which would have allowed her to finish in 6th or 7th...What if Nancy had landed that triple flip in her long program? I believe she wold be the 1994 Olympic champion.

Should be quite interesting when Oksana releases her new autobiography hopefully she'll address this matter once & for all. This accident created a lot of tension wondering if she could skate or if she'd withdraw from the event etc.? Would she re-injure herself? How would it affect her skating? What if she fell & how bad was it really?

Scott could have gotten out if he'd wanted to. In the States almost always employers allows one leave due to death or terminally ill close family members. My understanding was that Scott chose to soldier on, and his dad wanted it that way.

@SexyLiLLeilaniMya Whatever, Stop reading so much narrative into what Scott (or any other journalist) says. It is certainly a fact that Tonya hadn't landed a 3A in competition in several years (very sad, she's an amazing athlete). But whatever, he's reporting it as he sees it--don't be paranoid.

Figure skating has a history of women running each other down. The American announcers seemed to think Oksana would be unable to skate & the fat one seemed over anxious a bit giddy even. But his giddiness was for nothing Oksana wouldn't give Nancy an easy route to the gold medal. She gave all of her opponents a fight!

Japan's Midori Ito and France's Laetita Hubert collided in practice in 1992. I was looking at that on "Women's Sports Injury Compilation Part 8" which also includes other sports injuries.

Do you know twilligert123, the equally irritating snotty brat who post boorish tirade after tirade? At least, you have an ounce of common sense. TI would like to add that Miki Ando is starting to resemble that of Oksana Baiul. I am simply departing from a comparison of Kerrigan's noble attempt to execute a flawless program with Oksana's balletic grace and now I am seeing Miki's resemblance to that of Oksana. To prove to you my point, you might want to see various comparison of Miki to Oskana.
